Describe the exclusive collection you designed for our store. The palette is called Wisteria and is anchored by a gorgeous bronzeamethyst gemstone doublet. The multi-stone silhouettes in the collectionalso have hand-faceted clear quartz and Brazilian amethyst gemstones anda beautiful black shell doublet. I source stones and materials from all overthe world, though I actually found the bronze amethyst I used for thiscollection right here in the U.S. You’ve talked about jewelry as empowering women; explain. For me, jewelry has always had a transformative quality—a great necklaceor the perfect stack of bangles can really lift a mood, inspire confidence, make a woman feel more beautiful, more sexy, more herself. When you feelbeautiful, you feel confident and that’s empowering. In general, what inspires your designs going into 2012? It seems I can never get enough color, or sparkle! So for 2012 you will see abig emphasis on gorgeous colors in bright and tonal hues across all threemetals. And then there is the bling factor—expanding my diamond categoryin a sophisticated and somewhat unexpected way has been fun for me.

I just spent two weeks traveling in Asia and India and was completelyinspired by EVERYTHING: the cuisine, the language, the architecture, thediversity and the dichotomy. Especially in India, you really have thisinteresting sense that while this is the oldest living civilization on earth, it isalso incredibly modern in many ways. How do you account for your strong and dedicated following? When I started out, I was designing the kind of jewelry I wanted to wear butcouldn’t find. No one was crafting truly wearable fine jewelry that you couldwear everyday, all day. As I continued to develop my collection, it becameclear that this concept of creating fashion fine jewelry resonated withwomen—all kinds of women. They embraced the wearability, the versatilityand the collectability: the idea of building a wardrobe.

What’s really inspiring is the range of women who wear my jewelry, from young ingenues to established actors to musicians and artists. What are you personally wearing a lot of these days? I love the simplicity and versatility of a long link chain; it’s the perfect dayto night piece. I wear it doubled at the office and when I go out in theevening I wear it long with a great pair of drop earrings. The 19 gold anddiamond bangles I wear everyday have become my signature and aredefinitely my favorites.

Other than design, what are you doing these days? One of my goals this year has been to make time for art—to see it, to createit, to appreciate it. Art rejuvenates and inspires me—it makes me a morecreative designer. What are you most proud of? I am most proud of raising a confident and independent daughter andinstilling in her the importance of pursuing your passions, working hard andbeing a good person. Of course I am immensely proud of the business I’vecreated, but this is a team effort and I work with an incredible group ofpeople. I believe we are all constantly evolving into the people we aremeant to be, so while I embrace change, I really just try to live in themoment and be who I am.

I HEAR A LOT ABOUTJEWELRY WARDROBING:WHAT ARE THE “MUST-HAVE” ITEMS?While there are no hard and fast rules, a greattimepiece is an absolute essential. Since youwear this item often, if not daily, it should besomething that embraces your personal styleand suits your way of life (i.e. don’t get aleather strap or dainty diamond-encrustedmodel if you swim or play sports every day). There are many great options in well-pricedmaterials such as ceramic, stainless steel andgold. Select features that meet your needs andreflect your personality.

Another key item is a necklace or pendantthat has special meaning to you, or showcasesyour individual style. Keep in mind that sinceyour neck area is one of the first things peoplenotice, a distinctive piece is memorable. Lastly, select great earrings that you don’t have tothink about. These could be diamond studs, bold hoops, or something more elaborate, butkeep it relevant to your regime, something youcan put on and then forget about for the day!

WHAT SHOULD I KNOWABOUT FALL/WINTER 2011JEWELRY TRENDS?Jewelry is certainly an integral part of awoman’s wardrobe, perfect for jazzing up anyoutfit. Though we all have those traditionaljewelry pieces, wearing them on a daily basishardly inspires enthusiasm. So mix it up! Toensure that your look doesn’t get pigeonholed, diversify your jewelry collection to includetrend pieces that can be paired with classics.

According to top designers around theglobe, fall/winter 2011 is the season to go bold!Chunky statement jewelry in bright colors is akey fashion trend—choose pieces that standout from, rather than blend in with, your outfit.Go for extra-large bracelets, shiny danglers forears, notable necklaces. If you’re a fan ofmotifs, now’s the time to mix and matchvarious icons (animal, floral, religious) to createa unique look that’s very “you.”

Lastly, remember to invest in bangles (orother bold bracelets) this season, a must-havefor every fashionista. Those who love chunkyrings can brandish huge retro-inspired stylesthat not only look great but are also easy onthe pocketbook.

I NEED SOME GIFT IDEAS FOR MEN: ANYSUGGESTIONS?Whether your guy’s a corporate type or amusician, there’s some great new men’s jewelryin our store. Obviously, a good watch is alwaysthe ultimate gift and we have plenty offabulous options. (Many of today’s best stylesare more elegant and classic than in seasonspast; rose gold is also trending.)

Cuff links are always a great gift, allowing aman to express his personality, even in theboardroom. Choose a motif that relates to hisinterests or passions (sailing, golf), or matchthe gemstone or enamel to his favorite color.

For the guy who’s cool and contemporary, neck or wrist jewelry that combines high-techmetals with natural and/or precious materialswill bring out his inner rockstar. You know it’s inthere somewhere!

A romantic idea: why not buy each othernew gold or platinum bands to celebrate yourlove and your ever-evolving relationship?

Local singer and songwriter JennieDeVoe's voice has been described as"smoked honey on a sultry summer

evening...smooth, sweet and warm." She hasrecorded five albums and appears in concert allover the country. She performed at Lillith Fair andhas opened for greats like Dave Matthews, JohnMayer, Bonnie Raitt, Joe Cocker, Lucinda Williams,Lyle Lovett, Jack Johnson, Ray Charles, and more.

Reis-Nichols has been working very closelywith DeVoe this past year. She is the voice on manyof our radio spots, and one of her songs wasselected for our TV campaign. BJ Nichols, presidentof Reis-Nichols Jewelers says, "Jennie's personaland musical style is mesmerizing. We really felt aconnection to her soulful and romantic vibe."

How did you acquire a passion for jewelry? My mom used to let me sit and look through herjewelry box. She didn’t have a lot but to me, it waslike opening a treasure chest. I have alwaysenjoyed finding things and remember finding anantique pin that I then went outside and buried likea pirate so my friend Michele and I could dig it uplater, like we’d found a secret treasure. We neverfound it again. It’s still somewhere in my parents’yard. Maybe I’m still trying to replace that loss!

What attracts you to vintage pieces? What do you look for in specific items?I’m a big fan of imagination. I’d say imaginationand authenticity are what draw me to vintage (or

modern) jewelry, music, paintings or even clothing.I really gravitate to things that look and feel likesomeone put some imagination, integrity andemotion into their final product. I do lean towardthe vintage look primarily because of the detail inold pieces. But what attracts me to acontemporary or vintage piece isn’t really a certainera or look, as much as its uniqueness and detail. When I look at a piece of jewelry I turn it upsidedown and all around. I guess I do the same withmusic, art and clothes. I like to see and hear andfeel intricate detail. If it looks or feels or soundscheap or cookie-cutter I probably won’t enjoy it.

How would you describe your personalstyle? My personal style is rather funky and bohemian Ithink. I’m not very ‘matchy-matchy’ with myjewelry or clothes. I may like certain thingstogether that a normal person wouldn’t agreewith. Everyone should follow their individualstyles and desires. It makes the world look andsound so much more fun and interesting than ifwe all followed the leader. I mix and matchanything I want and never ask anyone how itlooks until it’s too late, five minutes before ashow and there’s no time to change.

How do your musical and jewelry choicesrelate to one another?Artists in music, jewelry and art all fall into thesame emotional category for me I guess. I like

depth and I think you can be deep and simple atthe same time, you just have to be authentic. AndI love to look at a lot of things that aren’tnecessarily something I would want for myself, but can still appreciate the work the artist putinto it. I feel I have an open mind and like a lot ofstyles of music. Same goes for jewelry. But tobuy it and take it home, I’ll narrow it down tosomething that means something to me and thatspeaks for me or makes a statement I like.

What is the inspiration behind Blue SkyBig Sun, the song that was featured in aReis-Nichols TV commercial (and yoursong writing in general)?Blue Sky Big Sun came to me lyrically with melodyand guitar almost all at once. I felt I was having aJames Taylor moment. I had a bit of the lyrics doneand then set the song aside for a little while. I pickedit back up when my nephew Carson was born onChristmas Day with Down Syndrome, veryprematurely and with many complications. He endedup at Riley Children’s Hospital the day afterChristmas for major surgery. What an inspiration thistough little guy has been to our family. I ended upbeing very inspired by him and his simple strugglejust to be here with us. So I finished Blue Sky Big Sunwith lyrics that just fell into place and felt right. Themessage of the song is basic: Keep it simple and true, enjoy the free things in life. A blue sky and a big sunare all we need to make us smile sometimes andCarson’s life was a great reminder of that for all of us.

World renowned for its elegance, innovation and unique attention todetail, Penny Preville jewelry has

been worn by fashionable women from JackieOnassis to Nicole Kidman to Blake Lively. Here, anexclusive interview with the designer. How did you first get interested injewelry design? As a little girl, I’d go into New York City everySunday to visit my grandmother (Adele Preville, aself-described “Hungarian Gypsy”) at her ParkAvenue apartment. It was filled with amazingartwork: Chinese screens, Buddhas, rare art pieces. But what intrigued me most was her jewelry box, overflowing with Cartier, Tiffany, Van Cleef, exquisitepieces from different eras that my grandfatherbought her. I would touch them, try them on, dreamabout them. My other grandmother was an artist(she painted Limoges china) as was my mother.Ultimately, I chose a major in fine arts: I loved arthistory, re-living different eras.Describe your jewelry and the process tocreate it.Words that come to mind are intricate, romantic,

elegant, timeless. I’m all about the detail:beading, engraving, twisting, layering, texture…

My jewelry is made by artisans here in NewYork City: we start with an original model andmost of the work is done by hand: engraving, stone setting, polishing, finishing. Depending onthe piece, the process can take a few days to afew months. What inspires your designs?Travel. Nature. Architecture. Paintings. Fabrics.Lifestyle. Different civilizations (Egyptian,Byzantine, Ancient Greece, Russia…)How would you describe your personalstyle? What are your favorite jewelry pieces? There are two sides to me: very driven andpractical, but also romantic, very much a girly-girl.My favorite pieces include a garland ring, a widescroll-y diamond cuff that I wear for black tieevents and a thin diamond bangle that I wearevery day (it’s part of my body!) I also love a HarryWinston ring with diamonds from the 1930s thatmy grandmother wore, and a blue star sapphirethat my husband’s mother got from her mother…You work with your husband and two

sons: how hard is it to combine businessand family? It can be challenging! Fortunately, we haveseparate roles: I do the design/creative and Jay(who started the business with me) managesfinancial/operations. Our two sons Skyler (31)and Derek (27) are learning all aspects and willhopefully find their niche. I didn’t expect the boysto join us: growing up, they were into sports andshowed little interest in the business. What are the key looks in jewelry goinginto 2012?Long chains, statement earrings, bangles andcuffs to mix and match, collectibles, differentstones, blackened metals and lots of color(especially blues!). I also believe in the mysticalpowers of certain stones – for strength or forprotection. What does a woman’s jewelry say about her? It’s reflects her style and individuality; it providesinsight into who she is as a person: spiritual, sentimental, practical... In fact, I love watching womenselect jewelry: when she finds the perfect piece, it’smagical; it brings out something in her soul.

IT’S SUPER!OUR CITY HAS SPENT HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS GETTING

READY FOR THE SUPER BOWL, AND IT SHOWS!

After months of questions and concernsurrounding the 2011 NFL season, thefive-month lockout ended in July,

guaranteeing a punctual start to the 2011-2012season. After a huge sigh of relief, we are readyto let the countdown begin! Indianapolis issurging with anticipation as we approach SuperBowl XLVI. This is the first Super Bowl for Indianapolis, only the fourth to beheld in a cold-weather city. Not to worry; foul-weather plans are firmly inplace. Sidewalks have been widened and streets cleaned and cleared inpreparation for plenty of heated party tents lining the downtown streets.

Our city has spent hundreds of millions getting ready for the SuperBowl, and it shows! In addition to the obvious new Lucas Oil Stadium, downtown is buzzing with excitement and beauty—and we are so proud tocall ourselves Hoosiers. As part of the RebuildIndy initiative, the city has

spent more than $140 million on road work andrelated projects since September 2010.

The people of Indianapolis have come out indroves to show their support and willingness to helpwith the big event. Initially, there were 8,000 slatedvolunteer jobs, but that has been expanded to12,500—now with a waitlist. There’s something to

say for our city when we have more people that want to volunteer than canbe accommodated! Additionally, 2,012 new trees have been planted aroundtown and 8,000 scarves have been knitted to show thanks to the generousvolunteers.

We certainly are lucky to live in such a thriving city at this exciting timein its history! So be sure to take some time this holiday season to headdowntown to enjoy the new facelift to our already beautiful city. We’ll seeyou at the big game!

Women’s liberation was barely a pipedream when a little-knownyoung woman fulfilled a dream of her own. Pilot, flight instructor, aerospace engineer, technical editor and PR rep for some of

America’s big corporations, Janet Guthrie became the first woman tocompete at both the Indianapolis 500 and the Daytona 500 (where she wasRookie of the Year in 1977). Here, in an exclusive interview, she speaks withAccent magazine about speed, style, and life without jewelry.

How does a nice young girl from Miss Harris’s Florida School forGirls find herself flying around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway?I was always adventurous. I was always riding my bicycle improbabledistances; I made a parachute jump and soloed an airplane at age 16, gotmy private pilot license at 17 and my commercial and flight instructorlicense by the time I finished college. I guess you could say flying was myfirst love. When I graduated college with a physics degree, I went towork as an engineer in the aerospace industry. I needed a car so I boughta 1953 Jaguar XK 120 Coupe, just because it was beautiful. Then I foundout what I could do with it! Besides the pleasure of exercisingsohisticated machinery, racing added the element of door handle-to-door handle competition. That was a very compelling combination and Igot hooked.

You had a B. S. in physics from the University of Michigan, a greatengineering job at Republic Aviation and you were a candidatefor the early astronaut program; why give it all up for racecars?I realized that I was clever in my profession as an engineer but I wasn’toriginal, and I felt without originality, there’d be no joy in this vocation. Ispent some time jobless while I worked on the Jaguar and built a Toyota

Celica racecar with the help of some friends (which I won Sebring with acouple of times) but it wasn’t enough. After four and a half seasons, thingswere pretty bleak: I had no job, no money, no jewelry, no husband and I wasin debt. At that point I received a phone call from someone I didn’t knowwho asked me if I would test a car for the Indy 500. Thanks to myreputation as a racecar driver known for finishing well, this opportunitycame out of nowhere and my life took a dramatic turn for the better.

What would you consider your most memorable achievement?I would have to say qualifying a car at Indianapolis in the era I raced in,where there were 90 other cars with some of the world’s greatest driverstrying to be among the fastest 33 cars to take the field. It’s a moment I willremember until my dying day. I have to add that finishing in the top 10 ona very low budget was quite memorable as well, as was setting the fastesttime at the opening day of practice in 1977.

What are your days like lately?I live in Colorado and love hiking in the mountains there. When I’m in FloridaI do a lot of bicycling. I do some volunteering and for a long time I’ve been anofficer at a group that supports the arts in Aspen. I spent a good bit of timewriting my book, A Life At Full Throttle, which came out a few years ago.

Any regrets? In 1978, when I was at the top of my sport, I was asked to lunch at theUniversity Club in NYC with Rolex executives to discuss appearing in aRolex advertisement. Although the offer was exceptional, I felt I had todecline since I’d been in contact with Timex for sponsorship of myupcoming race season. I’d say turning down Rolex was regrettable!

fter searching forweeks, I finally stumbled across the perfect ring. The centerstone appeared to float among the tiny diamonds thatsurrounded it. Next, I went to visit her parents to ask themfor their blessing. They were excited andshared their wisdom with me.Her Mom asked if she could seethe ring, but I politely declinedsince I didn’t want anyone to seethe ring before Jessica.

I had been planning to proposeon a weekend that was over amonth away, but couldn’t standhaving the ring, since I knew itbelonged on her finger. I had a fewideas for what the ultimate proposalwould be, but I finally settled on one that involved our love of sailing andwas going to take a large amount of preparation, teamwork and secrecy.

The plan involved borrowing a sailboat and organizing a crew offriends to sail the boat. I worked with a friend from a local sail makingcompany to put “Marry Me?” on the spinnaker sail. Meanwhile, I wasalso contacting some of my best buddies to help crew the boat on thisspecial mission. I created a plan for them that detailed multiple possiblelocations for the proposal: all depended upon the day’s wind directionand even included a “no wind” plan that involved putting the sail up andmotoring backwards to make the spinnaker fly! The final piece of thepuzzle was to have a professional photographer taking paparazzi-typephotos while the proposal was unfolding.

The night before, I called Jessica and told her that I had just receiveda gift certificate to a nice restaurant on the bay. I wanted to wait until the

last minute to make itseem like it wasnothing special, until Ifound out herroommate had already

made plans with her! I spent the next day scramblingto contact her roommate to convince her to cancel.

Now the plan was in place! I met the crew atthe boat and they all looked sharp in their khakipants and white polos. They told me that Ineeded to leave! I was pretty nervous as Ireviewed the plan over and over again.

Finally, after what felt like the longest dayof my life, I picked up Jess and headed down to the bay. I asked

her if we could go on a walk and she agreed that it would be nice. Thering was burning in my pocket! Then we noticed a boat dangerouslyclose to the rocks…

“What is that boat doing?!” she asked, concerned. “I don’t know, let’s watch,” I replied.

The big white spinnaker sail flew up and in large red letters she read,“Marry Me?” She turned around to find me on one knee and the ringsparkling in the sunset. She cried with excitement and said, “YES, YES,YES!” My ultimate proposal came together perfectly, with my friendscheering wildly, and I held my fiancée in my arms as she wore the ring ofher dreams.

The Jewelry Information Center’s second annual Ultimate Proposal Contest invitedcouples to submit their special proposal stories at www. JIC.org, and askedAmerica to vote for a favorite amongst 10 Top Finalists. More than 6,000 peoplecast their vote to choose the winner. Austin Dias and his fiancée, Jessica Williams, won a seven-night Caribbean cruise from Norwegian Cruise Lines and a pair ofplatinum and diamond wedding bands. The story has been edited for ACCENT.

latinum has long beenheralded as the crème de la crème of jewelry settings. Not only is the metaldurable and resistant to corrosion, but platinum is also rare and eternal, much like the qualities of love. Most celebrities choose platinum for theirrings because they want their large diamonds (20.5 carats in KimKardashian’s case!) to be as radiant and beautifully showcased as possible.Another admirable quality of platinum is its natural white color, whichflawlessly sets off the brilliance of the diamond and enhances the wow-factor. Here, some sparkling examples of why platinum is a gorgeousoption for highlighting a gorgeous rock:

Emily Blunt’s engagement to John Krasinski was made even morespecial by the addition of her three-carat Edwardian diamond andplatinum ring. The custom-designed ring features side-scalloped detailingof alternating diamond and platinum ripples, emphasizing the flawless

cut and clarity of the center stone impeccably. The unique engagement ring given to Katherine Heigl by now-

husband Josh Kelley boasts a three-carat pear shaped diamond flanked byrows of pavé diamonds. The everlasting quality of platinum jewelry isapparent in this design—half of the platinum band is actually fromHeigl’s mother’s own engagement ring!

Beyonce and Jay-Z, the power-couple to rival all power-couples,exhibit their love in an equally powerful fashion. Beyonce’s 18-caratemerald-cut diamond set in platinum is reportedly worth $5 million andis a prime example of the brilliance and clarity a diamond can projectwhen properly displayed.

FAST FACTS:• Platinum is naturally white, so it won’t cast any color on a diamond. • Platinum will never fade or change color. • Platinum is the strongest metal, making it the best option to securely

hold large diamonds.• Platinum is eternal, with everlasting radiance and durability. • Platinum won’t chip or scratch. • Platinum is the most precious of metals.

CHOOSE THE METAL THAT’S HOT WITH THE STARS.

These platinum, sapphireand diamond rings are very

The ambiance is perfect with stunning views of thesea and a lovely French country-decorated living room. The perfect place to recover from (or prepare for) aparty.

THAT’S A GOOD LOOKFOR YOUThere’s a lot to see at the very fashionable Hotel Zaza in Houston, Texas. It’s oftenpossible to spot visiting celebrities like Billy Idol, David and Victoria Beckham, andJennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony (before the breakup they stayed in one of theZaza’s “Magnificent Seven” suites: crystal chandeliers, gold bed covers, Persianrugs and terraces with soaking pools). Then there’s the extraordinary artwork.Owner Charles S. Givens regularly installs pieces from his private collection, byartists including Simon Procter, Isack Kousnsky and Helmet Newton, throughout the hotel. For guests who want to learn more about the art, theZaza will arrange a private tour of the current exhibits with expert StevenThompson. Sommelier Alex Aland opens a bottle of Châteauneuf-du-Pape to complete theartistic ambiance.

FROM THE TERRACEIn the 17th century, a charming Byzantine church was built on the cliffs of thecaldera above the Aegean on the lovely Greek island of Santorini. A veryexclusive neighborhood of small houses grew up around the church. Withterraces jutting out over the sea offering magnificent views of the legendaryvolcano, these were the residences of the wealthy for nearly three centuries. Now a Yades Historical Hotel, the Aigialos Luxury Traditional Settlementcomprises 16 neoclassical houses, restored by master masons, retaining theoriginal shapes and schemes. The comfortable rooms have marble floors andhandsome furniture, there’s a restaurant and swimming pool…all the modernconveniences. But the sense of history remains, along with the views, whichoffer one of the most superb sunsets in the Mediterranean.

Stunning photographs and comprehensive information onsome of the world’s most beloved jewelry designers arejust part of the magic of a wonderful new book, Vintage

Jewelry Design: Classics to Collect & Wear, by Caroline Cox(Sterling Publishing Co. NYC, 2010).

By illustrating the history of jewelry as it pertains to lifestyle, the reader is transported through the decades, presented with aninformative account of how jewelry has evolved from 1890 untilthe present. The book beautifully describes the meaning behindjewelry styles of the past and explains how specific items connectto the beloved celebrities of each era.

W hether out on tour or singing on her home stage, Carrie Underwood is always polished to perfection. At American Idol’s finaleresults show, the cute country star rocked in a long-sleeved mini dress. Her Art Deco diamond and raspberry tourmaline dropearrings play off the geometric pattern of her dress and add a pop of color.

Classic: the definition of Paula Patton at the 2011 Simon Wiesenthal National Tribute Dinner. In a simple black spaghetti strapsheath, she let her 18K yellow gold and diamond earrings steal the show, proving she knows how to accessorize Just Wright.

If anyone can convince us that bronzer is overrated, it’s this light-skinned lady. Rachel McAdams looked anything but bland for thepremiere of Sleeping Beauty at the 64th Annual Cannes Film Festival. Fierce red lips and an armful of diamond bangles added afeminine touch to her menswear-inspired neutrals.

F or better or worse took on significant meaning this year as Iwatched the woman I love suffer through a medical crisis. It startedwhen, for some unknown reason, Janet stopped cooking. This was

simply unfathomable to me. She loves to cook! And I love to eat.As if this wasn’t bad enough, she also stopped eating, saying that the

mere smell of food was making her nauseous. She totally refused to goanywhere near the kitchen. As I am a terrible cook, we were both gettingthinner by the day. “I know you want to lose a few pounds, but don’t youthink this is a bit extreme?” I asked her. No answer. Was this some sort ofpsychological rebellion against me? It is about me isn’t it?

Knowing something was very wrong, we called in doctors. There wereendless tests with endless specialists but still no answers. In a state ofhelpless confusion I watched as my wife withered away physically andemotionally. I watched as the ambulance took her to the hospital, as shereceived more tests from more specialists. Then finally, a diagnosis: “Yourwife is anorexic, has a brain hemorrhage and Bacterial Endocarditis, whichhas destroyed her heart valve. She needs open heart surgery.” I sat therewhite as a ghost as the blood drained from my body. Bacterial what?

By now, Janet was gaunt, exhausted and terrified at the prospect of

surgery, which was to be scheduled after eight weeks of daily IV antibiotics, administered by me, at home. To regain her strength, she needed to eat.Luckily, supportive family and friends precluded the need for my cooking.

Slowly she regained her appetite as the antibiotic killed off the nastylittle Streptococcus viridans bacteria. But the looming prospect of openheart valve replacement surgery haunted us every minute. Ultimately, theday arrived and we drove to the hospital in a state of disbelief. The surgerywas scheduled for Valentine’s Day, which felt like a good omen. After fiveintense hours, the surgeon came out to inform me that all had gone well. Icould finally breathe.

And to celebrate the ultimate gift of my wife getting a new heart forValentines Day, I surprised her with a pair of diamond earrings. The nurseran into the room in a frenzy when Janet’s EKG lit up the monitor, but it wasonly her heart fluttering as she opened the box and saw the earrings.

“I’ve always wanted these; I’m never taking them off!” she exclaimedwith joy and gratitude. It was just what the doctor ordered to renew thetwinkle in her eyes, the radiant smile, the prospect of normalcy. And howwe both craved the monotony of normal routine living! Routine living witha little extra sparkle.
