Existing Conditions Survey Concept Plan

Perspective of fountain Section

Ben T. Epps was the first Aviator in Georgia’s history. He grew up near Athens, GA, and spent most of his life there. He opened the first me-chanic’s shop in the city. The shop’s location is right across the street from the site. He built the state’s first plane in that shop. He also start-ed the first airport in the state that is still the state’s second largest. It would be an honor for the city and citizens to dedicate this ground to him.

Opposite:This park design utilizes a rectilinear form vocabulary. It reinforces the strength Ben Epps attained as an aeronautical engi-neer and as a mechanic. There is to be a mural, model of his first aircraft and a statue of him. There are eight proposed Mag-nolias for his children he taught to fly, and there are six pro-posed Crepe Myrtles for the six aircraft he patented and built.

residential hand renderingThis project is an example of my hand rendering techniques. They all illustrate the same site. The axonometric and the perspective focus on the backyard of the plan above. The media used are pastel, colored pencil, marker, pen, and pencil.

This project encompassed designing a multi-family mixed-use development. The density is 20 units per acre on a fourteen acre site. Parking, balancing cut and fill, and drainage are the main criteria for the design.

The site is a four acre plot in downtown Atlanta,Georgia. It is adjacent to Morehouse College, so an alumni is the namesake. Flipper is the first African-American to gradu-ate from West Point Military Academy. The play area is in the shape of a paw print to echo the school’s mascot.

The criteria set for the design was to segre-gate passerbys from patrons by providing spac-es with no cut through access. This was achieved with a statue garden, plaza and BBQ pavilion.

hancock street redesign

The concept for this streetscape redesign was to install a bike themed corridor that links the future river district of downtown Athens,GA and the trails of the Oconee River Greenway trails to the residential neighborhoods that flank the city’s western edge. The corridor will double as the finishing line for the annual Twilight profession bike race and the end of bikers considering their mode of transportation as secondary. This is achieved with a road diet that will segregate bi-cycle traffic from automobile. The bike lanes are to be paved with Nike Grind, so the will double as storm water infrastructure. There is also a BMX bike park proposed as Athens only bike park is miles away to the east requiring car transportation to get to it. The hope is that no bicycler would decide to take another route if traveling in the downtown area.

The project will be broken down into five areas of focus:

Athletics

-Soccer Field

-Baseball Field

-Boy Scout Trail

Bioretention

-Create bioretention areas that replace the current storm drains and rip rap

-Remediate stormwater runoff on site while maximizing the effectiveness of the existing stormwater detention area

-Supply aesthetically pleasing landscape features that improves downstream water quality

Prayer Trail

-incorpetrates Seven stops for the Seven Joys of Saint Joseph

-provide a place to reflect and pray

-Furnish a means of exercising the body and mind

Student Garden

-Creates a food/ Health Understanding

-Provides a means for students to connect with the outdoors while endorsing attention to detail

-Develops a true appreciation of the symbiotic relationship with a garden

Entryway Redesign

-Creates an instant sense of place

-Gives a meaningful experience for the everyday user as well as a visitor that may enter once

-Illustrate a bond with community as some opinions of the church are made only while passing by on Epps Bridge Parkway

This is a blow up of a bioretention swale that remediates stormwater runoff from the parking lot to the north of the soc-cer field. The swale is approximately 60,000 sq. ft. A flush curb is proposed to allow the water to run into the swale. A three foot filtration strip will act as the first flush. A two foot by two foot gravel infiltration basin’s microbial activity will continue to remediate the quality of the water also allowing it to infiltrate on site. The plan is located between the soccer field and the parking lot that dominates the center of the site on the previous Master Plan.

Opposite:This is a plan for a design we installed in the spring of 2011. I was charged with updating the plan on our Master Plant Inventory, and to do a rendering of the site.

As a garden steward, I followed a proper maintenance plan. The job encompassed pruning, fertilizing, designing, and up-dating plant inventories. There is a big difference to the resi-dential maintenance I have done with Bent Tree Lawn and Landscape Co., but they have both offered fruitful knowledge.

The client’s program involved two main points. They wanted an evergreen bed that would be different than the plant material that dominated the neighborhood. They also want to change colors as the had red brick, mulch, and Nandi-nas. This was achieved with a blue and gold plant pallet that included a Blue Atlas Cedar, Goshinko False Hollies, Blue Globe Spuce, and a Verdoni Cypress to accent the client’s wishes.

To improve pedestrian circu-lation, a 5’ sidewalk is to be installed at Coverdell Hall. A retaining wall is needed for 42’ to accommodate the bank. Its construction detail is to the left. ADA compli-ance was achieved through a system of ramps that are illus-trated in details 2-L.1 and 4-L.2.

Wray Nicholson House:This project was a re-design for the island in a wrap around drive-way. Color dominated the design criteria, so perennials were added with a complimentary color scheme. There is also a strong, central ev-ergreen backbone that consist of “Raddsunny” Knock-Out Roses and Spreading Plum Yew.

The Davison Life Science Complex requested an upgrade to their current plaza. The plaza served as the main entryway for em-ployees upon their arrival to work. The department wanted to add the a sense of place to their entry that echoed a place to be. We achieved this feeling by adding four tables to the plaza that are perfect for lunch. The tables were laid out to accommodate patrons in all seasons. Two tables bask in the afternoon sun, while two other tables are tucked away in the shade.

There are two benches that were added as well. They are spaced according to two original benches’ placement off the existing wall mounted lights.

An island with two existing maples and lantana was addressed as well. The island has been redesigned to add contrasting color and foliage to add delight to the space. The new planting consist of cast iron plant, lenten rose, and creeping jenny. The island had to be uncompacted with an air spade to plant the new material.
