oreWorD
Only when a person is able to ace and take up the pain and sorrow o another as his own, we prove our sel as a
responsible human being.
65 years since gaining independence, India still has eatures o poverty, disease, biased levels in its society and
lack o equal opportunities. Only i the Government, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and other social
organisations work together can a country like India have a respite rom these undamental problems acing this
country. The mission o an NGO is to take up the responsibility o what the Government may not do and what
they cannot do.
Rehab India Foundation is a NGO ormed 5 years ago, with its headquarters in Delhi. It was born by extensively
travelling through the villages the heart o India in the north and north-east and by watching the hunger,
diseases and illiteracy in the villages which had no colour or race discrimination and to eradicate such sorrow
and pain.
Rehab was motivated by the words o God, i anyone saves a lie, it shall be as though he had saved the lives
o all mankind. That is how we started Rehab Model Village in Assam. As protection or the women who are
compelled to give up their chastity due to their miserable lie in poverty, Rehab has started Padosi Sel-HelpGroup (SHG) Programme in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh.
The real villages in India have become a symbol o the complete helplessness o the people o India and o the
disregard o the ruling establishment.
Village Development Programme is a project to change their mindset and then to change their lives by using their
own resources to the maximum. Rehab adopted a methodology o inculcating a Can do attitude in villagers.
By the grace o God, the shine on their aces in adopted villages are proving that we are succeeding.
It is proposed that each adopted village should become a sel sustainable society at the end o th year. The
alert team o rehab is pursuing this goal in these villages.
Rehabs style is to take up micro level projects instead o macro projects and programmes. Its about smaller
clinics touching each village instead o big super speciality hospitals; The approach o giving priority to primary
schools instead o engineering or medical colleges.
Rehabs activities impact in three distinct ways in the people. First it builds sel condence in them. The
willingness to ull own obligations and the will power to obtain their rights rom the government is being
nurtured.
Secondly, it creates the eeling o sharing the pain and sorrow o the people living ar away like their own in
philanthropic individuals. They thereby include in the prayers o rehab team and scores o the beneciaries o
rehab projects.
Thirdly, our eorts in this eld increases the vigour o other NGOs working in similar area. We are happy to see
more and more agencies coming up to build model villages in Assam.
India lives in 120 crore people dwelling in 6.5 lakh villages and 8,000 cities across the subcontinent. With
respect to this gure, the work which Rehab does might be negligible, however the attitude o even i not
enough, whatever possible is a great one.
On that midnight when India rose to reedom while the world was ast asleep Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru addressed
India, The service o India means the service o the millions who suer. It means the ending o poverty, and
ignorance and disease and inequality o opportunities.
Rehab is going ahead. Our mission will not end unless hunger, diseases and illiteracy end to exist which do nothave a race or religion. With Gods grace and your cooperation we will accomplish our mission.

all our teachers. We are happy to say that students rom Rehab
villages have been well recognised and appreciated by the nearby
schools. As we move ahead with a goal o drop out prevention
strategies, we see a lot o positive vibes in parents to send every
child to school. Many o our villages have 100% school going
students as a result o Rehab eorts.
In this year we have initiated Sel Help Group (SHG) in all
Rehab villages. We are making signicant progress in availing
government benets in our economic development programmes.
We strongly believe in the caption prevention is better than cure.
Our healthcare initiatives are designed to bring awareness in
people about good health. Many campaigns were conducted about
hygiene and health basics. In addition to our monthly medical
check ups we partnered with hospitals and health centres to avail
ree medical treatment to the most needed people across each
village.
We have introduced unique programs like job oriented trainings,
amily counseling, career guidance, cultural programs, school
enrollment est, exam motivation and leadership trainings within
our Village Development Programme.
Furthermore, our MSW scholarship program is very unique in its
modus operandi. It gives students the benet o managing real
time projects while they study the entire 2-year course. Our MSW
students are rom the nearby places o Rehab villages.
We look orward to your continued support.

Few years back when we visited Hajipara Village, we observed all
elements o a tragedy. A tale o poverty, illiteracy, neglect, natures ury
and ocial Indias apathy towards the downtrodden and unsung people
o this village.
We analysed that these poor people were unable to maintain a
minimum socially accepted level o standard o living. And, due to
neglection, it is kicked o to consume benet o government schemes.
For daily expenses, they are completely dependent on agriculture.
Either they are owner o small piece o land or working as a labour
under land lords. In short, whatever they earned was not sucient to
ull ll their basic need.
Quality education or education at all was a dream or the children
and youth who liked to study. We can say major chunk was ignorant
and one o the major reasons was poverty and hunger. Somehow, it
is justied because we cant expect a starving person to indulge in
intellectual discourse on the importance o education. We needed
patience or long term output and people needed instant solution to
put something in their stomach. When we met one o the poor ladieso the Village. She said, Kya karenge parah kar. Chalo parah bhi liya
to kya Gaon ki parai shahar ki parai ka mukabala kar payegi. So we
realized that people understand the disparity o education in the villages
thats why they preerred skill development training programme than
education or their kids.
Ater poverty, illiteracy and ignorance, next most shocking indicator
was health and sanitation. In this modern era, still people go to the
open places or lavatory. Hospital is ar away rom the village, i
anybody dared to go then they ail to reach back in time due to bad
transportation.

It is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness.
I the several social orces which ultimately bring about radical
changes or transormation among the backward people, the
emale education is by ar the most important one. No nation
can progress; no human group can advance without the emale
education. Female education is the major vehicle through which
the generation-to-generation poverty cycle can be broken.
Female education has a tremendous impact on the amily
especially on children. Female education has a great infuence on
the status o women and their participation in various activities. The more a society is literate and educationally orward, the
more the status o its emales and less their participation in hard
and manual activities. In a rural society illiterate womenolk are
involved in each and every activity which requires hard labour.
Sometimes they perorm even those activities which are not
medically advisable or ladies. They do this because they have to
support their amilies.
In the current developing society and when infation is increasing,
there is a race or the acquisition o goods so as to lead a better
level o living in the society. This tendency is more common in
urban areas than rural. Today women take up jobs outside theirhomes to augment amily resources. Education and economic
independence is creating an atmosphere o sel condence
among women.
Today, womens contribution can be seen in the promotion o
economic development in dierent capacities, namely housewie,
mother, labourer, scientist, etc. Women contribute in the nations
overall production by their work in elds and actories. The status
o women is intimately connected with their economic position
which depends on opportunities or participation in economic
activities. The educational and economic status o women is
an indicator o social development. Observing the importance
o education or woman development and reorm, Rehab IndiaFoundation initiated Educare Centres or poor children especially
emale children and adults. I am delighted to share that presently
we are running twenty-one Educare Centres across India
promoting and achieving Goal two o UN Millennium Development
in the poorest areas o the country.

Our crying inants, screaming children, hal nude girls hiding themselves
at the back o their men, disappointed aces, huge crowd outside toilet,
this was the inside picture o Chirang reugee camp when we visited
in July. For ew minutes, I lost my control and wondered how people
can be inhuman at this level. Why people orget that we may have
dierent religion, language or even belong to dierent nation but we all
belong to one human race which is supposed to be superior rom other
creatures on earth.
In 2012 and rom last ew years, lakhs people met with their ate due
to the over fowing Brahmaputra and pre-planned attack by some
extremists in the name o cleaning o Bangladeshi inltrators.
With the aim to provide relie to these innocent people, we launched

Assam Relie Programme started on an emergency basis, and
distributed baby ood packets, polythene bags, mosquito nets, candles,
buckets, mugs, clothes, utensils and other necessary items in thereugee camps o Chirang, Dhubri, Kokrajhar, Barpeta and Bongaigaon.
About 1000 kg fattened rice, sugar and other necessary ood
materials were distributed in food aected villages o Assam.
Legal awareness programmes were organised requently or food
aected and riot hit victims so that they can legally claim or their loss.
Rehab Model Village initiated with a vision to ensure that every one o
these victims should have a home, access to education, pure drinking
water, medical support and employment opportunity. With the grace
o God, we have built 60 houses and among them 45 have beendistributed. Achieving UN MDG Goal 2, we are running pre-primary
school and also acilitating ree tuition classes to students and drop
outs. On need basis, Rehab released scholarships or the students who
like to study and organised weekly and bi-monthly medical camps or

women or reproductive child health, neo natal care and general and
personal hygiene. Moving orward rom charity to empowerment, team
ormed three Sel Help Groups; one man SHG and two women SHGs.
From next month, we will release loan or their proposed proposals
such as rearing o goat, bualo, papad making, marketing ood items
and clothes etc.

who have been temporarily rehabilitated at Government Reugee
