1 The BIAL Foundation presents the BIAL AWARD IN BIOMEDICINE 2019 competition under the terms and conditions established herein.

2 1 The BIAL AWARD IN BIOMEDICINE 2019 seeks to recognise a work published in the biomedical field (free theme) from 1 January 2010 onward, the results of which are considered to be of high quality and scientifically relevant.

Only works nominated by the Voting members of the Jury, the members of the Scientific Board of the BIAL Foundation, previous BIAL award winners and Scientific Societies may be considered candidates for the BIAL AWARD IN BIOMEDICINE 2019. The Jury may also invite other scientific institutions to submit proposals.

2 Works whose author(s) or co-author(s) are employees of the BIAL Foundation or of any company in the BIAL Group are ineligible for consideration.

3 1 Proposal should be written in English and must be submitted by 30 June 2019. The application form (available at www.fundacaobial.com) should be completed and sent as a PDF file, without restrictions, to [email protected] and must provide the following:

a) The name(s) and details of the party submitting the entry for consideration.

b) A copy of the entry.

c) A description of the entry that facilitates its analysis in the context of this competition, indicating: i) its main contributions (maximum 500 words); ii) the work’s measurable impact and any other initiatives it contributed to (maximum 500 words).

d) The name of each intellectual author or authors of the entry, their institutional affiliation and telephone and email contacts.

2 The BIAL Foundation may collect, process and/or use personal data submitted in the entries for the purposes of the award in accordance with this regulation, in particular for verifying the identity of the entrants and authors, for administering the award and to contact the entrants and authors for the organization and execution of the award and ceremonies, in compliance with applicable EU and national law on data protection. Entrants and authors may exercise their right to access, obtain, correct and oppose the use of personal data by writing to [email protected].

4 All contacts specified in these regulations shall be made to the nominated postal and/or email address of the corresponding author, in the event that the entry will be a journal article, or to the author identified in first place, in the event that the entry will be a book.

5 The PDF entry form referred to in point 3 shall be sent by email to the Jury of the BIAL AWARD IN BIOMEDICINE 2019. The PDF entry form will be kept on file until the results of the BIAL AWARD IN BIOMEDICINE 2019 are announced and afterwards disposed of by the BIAL Foundation and the Jury, with the exception to that which is stipulated in these regulations for winning entries.

6 1 The Jury is ultimately responsible for assessing whether entries comply with the conditions stated in points 2 and 3 of these regulations.

2 Decisions of the Jury are final and without possibility of appeal.

7 1 The Jury for the BIAL AWARD IN BIOMEDICINE 2019 is composed of fourteen members, one of whom will be appointed President at the invitation of the BIAL Foundation.

The other members of the Jury will be appointed: two by the European Research Council, two by the Council of Rectors of the Portuguese Universities, two by the European Medical Association and two by prominent international journals. Two further members will be chosen from among the members of the Scientific Board of the BIAL Foundation and two others will be previous winners of the BIAL Award. A fourteenth member will be appointed by the BIAL Foundation to act as Secretary to the Jury.

2 Should the Jury believe it lacks the necessary competence to judge the merit of one or more works competing to the BIAL AWARD IN BIOMEDICINE 2019, one or more experts may be consulted at the request of a majority of Jury members. The President or an appointed member of the Jury will be responsible for contacting any such expert(s).

3 The members of the Jury shall maintain strict confidentiality in regards to the works competing to this award.

8 1 The Jury is independent and has the power to decide by simple majority the winning entry of this competition as set out below in point 9. In the event of a tie, the President retains the casting vote. The Secretary does not have voting rights.

2 The Jury is solely responsible for establishing its working method, though it must fulfil the terms and conditions of these regulations.

3 Decisions taken by the Jury under this article are final and without possibility of appeal.

9 1 From the pool of entries, the Jury will choose the entry of greatest merit to receive the BIAL AWARD IN BIOMEDICINE 2019, which consists of a diploma and a sum of €300,000.

2 Awarded entries are subject to Portuguese tax laws.

3 The BIAL Foundation must be informed of the results of the selection process to which item 1 of this point refers to by 31 December 2019.

10 Results will be publicly announced in the first quarter of 2020, barring exceptional circumstances. Members of the Jury and authors of winning entries shall not disclose the results of the competition until the date of the aforementioned public announcement.

11 The winning entry will be published on the BIAL Foundation website, subject to permission from the author(s) and their respective publisher.

12 The BIAL Foundation reserves the right not to announce a winner in the event the Jury considers entries not to meet the level of quality or scientific relevance required by point 2.

13 The BIAL Foundation has no obligations with respect to entries or their authors not fulfilling all terms and conditions expressed or implied in these regulations and may not be held responsible for any act of the Jury or its members which may be regarded as injurious to any party.
