matter pertaining to a specific student, one matter of litigation and one

matter the will lead to the appointment of a specific company. Motion

carried 5-0.

Meeting reconvened at 8:07 P.M.

Mrs. Kriss commented on the following:

Extended a welcome and commended the staff who worked hard

throughout the summer months to prepare for the upcoming school

year.

Discussed the need to revise the high school class rank regulation and

revisit weighted average calculation to be more in line with other

school districts and to include IB courses. Mrs. Kriss welcomed

suggestions from community before finalizing the regulation.

Members of HS guidance in attendance.

Presentations Class Rank Regulation: Mrs. Linda Karman, Director of Guidance

Mrs. Karman gave an overview of the current weighted GPA model used

since 2006. Under the suggested new model, class rank would be provided

to students every year beginning in 10th

grade to create transparency in the

ranking process instead of only once in the senior year. This would allow

for parents to review transcripts for proper credit before the senior year.

Some colleges also look for rank to be calculated earlier than senior year.

Page 2: REGULAR MEETING OF THE BOARD OF EDUCATION TOWNS …...homework assignments, quiz grades, etc. Paper progress reports will not be mailed anymore. This is also good for teachers of struggling

Rank will be calculated for top 50% level only and percentile is given

after. Weighted and unweighted GPA will be printed on transcript.

Seniors must have earned 15 ½ credits in order to be ranked with cohort.

Younger grades will be ranked in percentile. IB courses will carry the

same weight as AP courses. The weight applied to courses will be

lowered from current model and will mirror the models used by

surrounding districts. A phase in process for this model would be

necessary.

Questions from Board:

Mrs. Todaro asked for clarification as to the impact on early graduates and

valedictorian status. She also inquired if students are permitted to take AP

exams if not enrolled in the AP course -the answer was affirmative;

however the score would not appear on a student’s transcript. Mrs. Mass

asked if the ½ of the 15 ½ credits refers to Health II. The answer was

affirmative.

There were no questions from the community.

Mrs. Kriss thanked guidance counselors for their work and said that this

will be placed on a future board agenda to be received at an upcoming

meeting.

Superintendent’s

Update

Mrs. Kriss mentioned the following in her update:

Hauppauge’s APPR Plan (Annual Professional Performance

Review) was the 11th

of 700 school district plans submitted to NY

State to be approved. She credited the achievement to the quality

of the work that went into it. Mrs. Kriss expects that

implementation of the new plan would not detract from core values

of instruction. She expects a smooth implementation process.
