Suggestions for Summer Reading — Grades 5 & 6

New students to Trinity College School are asked to read three books this summer. Please ensure that at least one book chosen is from the list below. Please look for other titles by the authors on this list. The Boundless Kenneth Oppel The Boundless, the greatest train ever built, is on its maiden voyage across the country, and first-class passenger Will Everett is about to embark on the adventure of his life! Frindle Andrew Clements When he decides to turn his fifth-grade teacher’s love of the dictionary around on her, clever Nick Allen invents a new word and begins a chain of events that quickly moves beyond his control. This quirky, imaginative tale about creative thought and the power of words will have readers inventing their own words. Brian Selznick’s black-and-white illustrations enhance the humour in this unforgettable story. Where the Mountain Meets the Moon Grace Lin Minli, an adventurous girl from a poor village, buys a magical goldfish, and then joins a dragon who cannot fly on a quest to find the Old Man of the Moon in hopes of bringing life to Fruitless Mountain and freshness to Jade River. A fantasy crossed with Chinese folklore, this is a wondrous story of adventure, faith and friendship. Zorgamazoo Robert Paul Weston If you are curious, clever and brave, if intrepid adventure is something you crave, then open this book and I’ll leave it to you, to uncover the secret of ZORGAMAZOO! This is the beautifully illustrated, rhyming adventure of Morty the Zorgle and Katrina. Rain Reign Ann Martin Rose Howard, a young girl with Aspergers Syndrome, obsessively loves homonyms, as well as her dog Rain, so when he disappears during a bad storm, Rose will do anything to find him. Hearts will break and spirits will soar for this powerful story, brilliantly told from Rose’s point of view. Anne of Green Gables L. M. Montgomery A favourite of many, this delightful novel tells the story of an unconventional orphan, much given to self-dramatization. A rich description of PEI and of Anne’s life. Fortunately the Milk Neil Gainman While picking up milk for his children’s cereal, a father is abducted by aliens and finds himself on a wild adventure through time and space. A hilarious story about time travel and breakfast cereal. El Deafo Cece Bell In this funny, poignant graphic novel memoir, author/illustrator Cece Bell chronicles her hearing loss at a young age and her subsequent experiences with the Phonic Ear, a very powerful — and very awkward — hearing aid. However, it could just turn her into a superhero.

Muchoki and Jata set off on what seems like an impossible journey: to walk hundreds of kilometres to find their last remaining family. Bomb Steve Sheinkin This is the award-winning story of the plotting, the risk-taking, the deceit and genius that created the world’s most formidable weapon. This is the story of the atomic bomb…a scientific race that spanned three continents. Junior School Music Program

Welcome to music at TCS! We are so excited for the year to come as we continue to offer a dynamic music program that seeks to inspire a lifelong love of music in every student.

Our Grade 5 music program focuses on exploring, experiencing and creating music through the Orff-Schulwerk process. Orff-Schulwerk is a holistic approach to music education where students learn through singing, moving and playing Orff instruments. Collaboration, communication, critical thinking and creativity are the pillars of this teaching process leading to rich learning experiences.

TCS offers a full complement of beautiful Studio 49 Orff instruments. These specially designed, barred percussion instruments consist of xylophones, metallophones, glockenspiels and contrabass bars. Orff instruments are for classroom use and can be accessed during the school day for individual practice.

Orff education in Grade 5 provides an outstanding foundation for students to continue their musical development in our band program from Grades 6 to 8. TCS offers a full complement of standard band instruments for student use. These instruments are available for sign-out to allow students to practice at home.

Private instrument rentals are encouraged for those students who would like the convenience of their own horn, as school instruments are shared by multiple users. Private rental also ensures that students play the same instrument in every class, which can be an advantage to their musical development. High quality rental instruments are available through the school from Gazebo Music. Gazebo rentals are arranged privately and are then delivered directly to the School. Find out more about Gazebo’s rental program at www.gazebo -music.com - instruments - rentals. There are also many other private rental options through local music stores or online. If you have any questions about this process, I would be more than happy to help. If you are interested in purchasing an instrument, I would be pleased to offer you valuable advice on brands/models that last a lifetime and sound terrific.

For students who are happy to share an instrument, purchasing a mouthpiece is required. Student model mouthpieces that can last through high school range from $20 to $30, depending on the instrument. Mouthpieces are available through the School and will be billed to student accounts. Please note: larger, more costly mouthpieces, such as bass clarinet and tuba, will be provided by the School.

All students entering the band program will be required to purchase a method book (between $10 and $20 depending upon the instrument) and a subscription to an online theory course (approximately $15).

Thank you for your support of our program. I look forward to meeting you and welcome your questions or comments at any time. Sincerely, Emma Crawford Junior School Music Teacher [email protected] !

Private Music Instruction Policies The arts department of Trinity College School is able to offer private instruction on many instruments on a first-come, first-serve basis. As we have a limited number of teachers available, it is necessary to register as soon as possible. In order to bill a student’s account for lesson fees we must have written or emailed permission from a parent/guardian. Please read the policies below. By signing the lesson application form you are agreeing to follow these policies. If students are unable to meet their obligations they may be withdrawn from the lessons. Communication between student and teacher is extremely important if there is to be any interruption to their regularly scheduled lesson time. This is critical, especially with the students’ busy schedules. Lesson Fees The cost of lessons is $35.00 per ½ hour, or $65.00 per hour. There may be exceptional cases where the fees are higher to reflect special circumstances. Lesson fees will be billed to the student’s account on a monthly basis. Most teachers are more than willing to provide extra lesson time when necessary and these lessons will also be charged to the student’s account.

Missed Lessons It is up to the student to contact the teacher directly if a lesson will be missed, or lesson time must be changed. Teachers will not be required to make up any missed lessons if less than 24 hours notice is given. Missed lessons with less than 24 hours’ notice will still be billed. Missed lessons with appropriate notice will be made up at a mutually agreed upon time by both teacher and student. Attendance records for the lessons will be kept for the benefit of students, teachers and advisors. There will be times when teachers, due to professional obligations, will also have to change lesson times. These also will be made up at mutually agreed upon times. Lesson Preparation It is imperative that students arrive for lessons with all the necessary materials to maximize the effectiveness of their time in the lesson. This would include their instrument, all accessories and all music and books. The other part of lesson preparation is effective practicing between lessons. Practicing is essential if concepts in lessons are to be mastered. Music Books Materials required by a student are at the discretion of the private teacher, and arrangements will be made between teacher and student for obtaining these materials. If the teacher supplies the materials, the cost will be billed to the student’s account. Contact Information If you have any questions regarding policies or procedures for enrolling in private music instruction please contact: Ron Parker Music Teacher (Senior School), Head of The Arts 905-885-3217 ext. 1226 [email protected]

At any given time, our students can be reading quietly, working collaboratively or independently, having a lesson, or working with the teacher-librarian on research or book searching. The library also provides our students with a place to simply “be”; a space that is open to many ways of “being” and is inclusive and welcoming by design. Our Junior School library strives to develop and maintain a collection that supports our curriculum and nurtures a love of reading. Our collection is always growing and developing so that we can continue to provide current, relevant and enticing fiction and non-fiction resources for our students. You are welcome to be part of our collection development by donating a book, or funds, in your child’s name. This could be to recognize an accomplishment, graduation, birthday or other special occasions. You may select a book of your choice or speak with me about a resource on the library’s wish list. A tax receipt can be issued to you for your generosity. All books donated will have a bookplate mounted in the front of the book, acknowledging the student and, if you wish, the reason for the donation. Feel free to contact me at the Junior School if you need more information. Thank you, Sarah Torrible Junior School Teacher-Librarian 905-885-3217 ext.1301 [email protected]

Top Marks Frequently Asked Questions

1.! Why is there a deadline date for ordering? Many of the items that make up your uniform are manufactured exclusively for your school. Receiving your order before or by the deadline date allows us to prepare our inventory with the required sizes and quantities. Keep in mind that we need enough time to cut, sew and embroider all garments in order to ship what you need before the start of school. Therefore, orders received after the deadline date cannot be guaranteed delivery before the start of school.

2.! Can I modify my order?

Yes, you can, so long as your order has not yet been shipped. Simply contact our customer service department to request a modification.

3.! What if I am not sure about sizing?

Remember that when ordering uniforms in the spring, these items are intended to fit not just until September but also to the following June. To assist you, fitting sessions are scheduled at the School. If you are unable to attend a fitting session, a measurement chart is provided at the back of this booklet. Simply provide your child’s measurements and we will do our best to determine the sizing appropriate for your child. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact our customer service department.

4.! How and where do you ship my order?

All orders with a Canadian address are shipped via Canada Post to your home. If you prefer to have your order shipped to your office, or an alternate address, please indicate so on your order form under the “ship to” section. International orders are shipped directly to the School, unless a Canadian address is provided.

5.! What happens if my child grows (or loses weight) over the summer?

We recommend that when you receive your package, and before washing any of the items, that your child try everything on. If an exchange is required, there is an exchange form included in the package with very simple instructions on how to process.

6.! Can I order more clothes later on in the school year?

Yes, you can order anytime during the year. As well, shirts, socks and sweaters can be purchased directly through the TCS school store.

7.! How do I best care for my uniform items?

Enclosed in your package of uniforms will be a detailed sheet showing the recommended washing instructions for each item of your uniform. Please read these instructions carefully. Proper care of your uniform extends the life of the garments considerably!

8.! What is your return/exchange policy?

You have 60 days from the date your child starts school. You can return any garment for exchange or for a full refund as long as the garment has never been worn, washed or altered.

D. Used Top Marks Uniform Items The TCS Parents’ Guild’s Bear Boutique gratefully accepts donations of gently used uniform items. The Bear Boutique is run by parent volunteers and proceeds from the sale of these items are used to enhance the student experience at TCS.

The donated items will be available for purchase at a substantial savings starting in late August and September. The Bear Boutique will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. during the Top Marks uniform exchange day, Tuesday, August 22st as well as on September 6th and 7th for uniform sales. Replacement uniform items are available throughout the school year as well.

Donations of gently used and laundered current uniform items are gratefully received and will be accepted from late June until early September only. Please drop off your donated items outside the Bear Boutique door (located across the corridor from the school store). If possible, donated items should be clean and/or dry cleaned and on hangers. Our parent volunteers do their best to ensure clothing items are dry cleaned, mended or washed prior to the sale, but your help is much appreciated.

Please contact Ms. Lisa Baker at [email protected] if you are unable to attend on the sales event days and require assistance with used uniform purchases or donations. Alternatively, you can leave a message on the Bear Boutique voicemail at 905-885-3217 ext. 1298, which will be checked intermittently during the summer.

If you have questions about uniforms during the school year, please contact the school store at 905-885-3217 ext. 1256 (weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.). The school store is closed from June 15th to August 21st. The Honour Code Purpose of an Honour Code The Honour Code outlines ideals which Trinity College School (TCS) students value above all others and guides the School’s fundamental expectations of student behaviour. Every student attending TCS, and his or her parent(s), must sign the Honour Code. The Honour Code TCS believes that students should understand and live by standards of honourable behaviour. Personal integrity is the foundation upon which students can thrive and develop. It is the cornerstone of one’s character. Personal integrity is demonstrated daily in doing one’s best, not for external rewards but, rather, simply in a desire to do what is right. In addition to being true to one’s self, personal integrity implies a soundness of character. At TCS honesty is expected, not rewarded. Academic deception, inappropriate use of technology and networks, lying, cheating, or any act that contravenes our major rules described is unpalatable, even if there is no chance of being caught. At TCS, a student’s personal integrity is paramount. Being part of a community brings with it certain responsibilities. Within the TCS community we collectively contribute to the maintenance of a “culture of respect and care” which governs all interactions and relationships. Every person at Trinity College School has a right to live, learn and work in a safe and healthy environment. Our community includes individuals from many different cultures and backgrounds which results in an interesting and enriching learning environment for all. In such a diverse community, inclusiveness must be prioritized and individuals must recognize that success and happiness are achieved through an open mind, a respectful and generous view of one’s neighbour, and a clear respect for others. As a student of TCS, I have read over and thought about the implications of this Honour Code and will endeavour to uphold it in my daily life at TCS. The Honour Code is read and signed by each TCS student, witnessed by his/her parent(s) and returned to the School.
