INVITATION TO ATTENDThe organising committee of the 2014 SPANZA Annual Scientific Meeting invites you to Tasmania for the 17th ASM of the society. The ‘Gems of Wisdom’ meeting will be held in Hobart from 16 – 19 October 2014 and will be the first SPANZA ASM held in Tasmania.

The meeting is aimed at both the specialist paediatric anaesthetist and the general anaesthetist with a paediatric interest. It presents the opportunity to experience both an excellent scientific program and all that Hobart and Tasmania has to offer.

It will be held in Hobart’s historic harbour area with river and mountain views and close to Salamanca Place and its Markets. Local historic and active tourist pursuits are within easy reach including day trips to historic Port Arthur and the iconic Bruny Island coastal wildlife cruises.

The meeting will include the topics of regional anaesthesia, latest developments in the medical management of common childhood conditions, difficult airway management, ventilation and issues with retrieval of children from regional centres.

The international invited speakers are Jerry Lerman (USA), honorary fellow of ANZCA (1997) and PA Lonnqvist (Sweden) who are both widely published, excellent speakers and international leaders in paediatric anaesthesia.

The highlight of the social program will be the meeting dinner which is to be held at the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) after a ferry ride on the Derwent River. The dinner will include the opportunity to view the MONA art works. MONA has become a draw card for tourists from all over the world.

JUNIOR OVERSEAS VISITOR

LASZLO VUTSKITS, SWITZERLANDLaszlo is a paediatric staff anaesthesiologist at the University Hospital of Geneva, Switzerland. He has a longstanding interest in developmental neurobiology and runs his laboratory at the Interface between the Departments

of Fundamental Neuroscience and Anesthesiology. The main focus of his laboratory is to elucidate the impact of general anesthesia on the developing central nervous system. To this aim, they have established several in vitro and in vivo models allowing them to study synaptogenesis in developing neural circuitry. Results obtained during the past few years in the lab reveal that general anesthetics are powerful modulators of neural plasticity.

SCIENTIFIC WORKSHOPSCENTRAL VENOUS ACCESS - TAKING IT TO THE NEXT LEVEL

Cost: $110

Ian Smith

Consisting of some short talks and demonstrations, this workshop will highlight the concepts to develop a comprehensive vascular access program as well as teach the skills required for insertion of a range of advanced vascular access techniques. Workstations will include insertion of midline catheters, “cut to size” PICCs, “ tunnelled” CVLs , consenting issues and a method to construct a vascular access model for training.

NEONATAL AND PAEDIATRIC RESUSCITATION REFRESHER

Cost: $110

Jennifer Plummer

This is a hands on workshop designed to provide you with the ability to update your advanced resuscitation skills in the management of both neonatal and paediatric emergencies. We will use practical scenarios and the latest APLS guidelines in a small group format to allow exposure in a safe and non threatening simulation setting.

This workshop will be held offsite, a short walk from the conference venue.

REGIONAL ANAESTHESIA

Cost: $110

David Sandeman

This workshop will include 6 stations. Stations will be a mix of ultrasound Guided Regional Anaesthesia and master classes. The workshop will include US guided paravertebral and rectus blocks, US guided Dorsal nerve block, wound catheters and wound infiltration equipment and US guided blocks for all other body regions.

PBLD AND AIRWAY FACILITATED DISCUSSION FORUM

Cost: $55

Stefan Sabato and Ben Turner

This workshop will include 2 PBLD’s on difficult airway scenarios that will be discussed during the 2 hour session.

Topics: 1) Airway management of a child with mucchopolysaccharidosis.

2) Clinical vignettes to scenarios where airway gadgets can help rather than hinder.

PBLD: SEDATION OUTSIDE THE OPERATING ROOM

Cost: $55

Ian Mackenzie

Paediatric practice has a large requirement for sedation outside the operating room. The requirements and solutions for providing this varies greatly in different institutions. The workshop aims to provide an opportunity for attendees to share their solutions and problems about the “who”, “where” and “how” of sedation in paediatric practice and discuss to what degree anaesthetists should be involved or set the rules.

PBLD: SHOULD WE TRANSFER?

Cost: $55

Simon Morphett

This PBLD will examine the decision-making process involved in determining which cases can reasonably be done in a regional paediatric centre and which transferred to a tertiary paediatric facility.

2 recent cases from the Royal Hobart Hospital will be briefly presented, one involving airway surgery in a small infant, the other PDA ligation. Participants are encouraged to bring along cases of their own for discussion. Some of the discussion will centre around what evidence exists to guide the decision making process.

RESEARCH FORUM

No cost

Andrew Davidson

This forum will have two sections. In the first key international researchers will informally discuss particular issues in paediatric anaesthesia research. Brian Anderson will discuss how to best design and report studies into post-operative pain. Andrew Davidson will give an update on the Paediatric Trials Network Australia, and the demise of hypothesis testing and P values. The second half of the session will be devoted to updates on current collaborative SPANZA projects and an open forum to discuss new projects.

MINDFULNESS IN PRACTICE

Cost: $75

Pamela Lovell

What is the quality of your attention? How does your ability to pay attention effect your work, life and relationships? Could paying attention in a particular way improve your well-being?

This experiential workshop will introduce mindfulness in theory and practice. The workshop will describe mindfulness and its benefits to the body, mind and life. Participants will be introduced to mindfulness practices to enhance attention, focus and well-being. Practical suggestions for developing a personal mindfulness practice will be included.

WHAT TO BRING/WEAR: Please come comfortably dressed, preferably in clothes that do not restrict your breathing and you can move freely in.

PBLD: HOW TO MANAGE YOUR EMERGENCY CASE WORKLOAD

Cost: $55

Ruth Matters

This discussion will explore the issues related to the coordination of the emergency case workload. We will have a look at an electronic Emergency Theatre Booking System and discuss the role of a Perioperative Anaesthetist to facilitate the preparation of patients for Anaesthesia and Surgery.

WHAT MAKES A GREAT PUBLICATION

Cost: $55

Andrew Davidson

This workshop will provide an interactive session to highlight the key points that editors look for that make a study publishable; and indeed what makes the study “great”. The workshop will cover the basic aspects of a good research question as well as finer points in writing style, content, format and basic statistics. The workshop is useful for those that wish to publish or review papers; as well as clinicians that want to fine tune their skills in critical evaluation of published literature. The workshop will be lead by section editors from Pediatric Anesthesia and cover case reports, editorials, reviews and clinical trials. Attendees will get home work to do prior to the workshop!

About 40 courts are in use today, the majority being in Britain. Today, the game is played in just 4 countries – the UK, US, France, and Australia. So come along and try this sport in the home of the current world champion.

WHAT TO BRING/WEAR: Comfortable clothing and shoes which are non-marking. You may wish to bring a warmer top as the courts can be quite cool.

FREE TIME AT SALAMANCA MARKETS

On Saturdays, Salamanca Place comes alive with the famous Salamanca Market operated by the Hobart City Council. It’s easy to see why this is rated as one of the top attractions in Tasmania, with over 300 stallholders selling fresh and gourmet produce, arts, crafts and handiwork crafts from all over Tasmania, interstate and overseas. The Grand Chancellor is a short walk to the markets, so take the opportunity to enjoy the market atmosphere before sessions.

GUIDED WALK ON MOUNT WELLINGTON

Cost $20 per person.

Only 15 minutes from the centre of town, Mt Wellington is a spectacular expanse of wilderness overlooking Hobart. With many walking tracks, the Wellington Park provides ample opportunity to experience a taste of Tasmanian bush. On a clear day, views across Hobart from high on the mountain are fantastic.

Guided by one of the local anaesthetists, enjoy a refreshing 2 hour morning walk on the slopes of Mt Wellington – exact location will depend very much on the weather but it may include some relatively strenuous uphill walking.
