During the week ending the 5th April 1947 in BritishIndia and in the Indian States shown in this statement,the total number of deaths reooried in 222 towns havinga population of 30,000 and over was 9,271. The mid-yearestimated population of theae towns was 28,457,017 andthe death rate was 18-2 per thousand of the population.Birtha hi the same towna numbered 11,58:) giving a birthrate of 22 • S per thousand of the population. In British Indiaalone the corresponding birth and death rates were 22.8and 18*0 per thousand of the population respectively.
(A) British India.—In British India, Benares was theonly town whioh had a high death rate of 67 • 3 per thousandof the population. Thia high dtfath rate was mainly duo todeaths from fevers and respiratory diseases. There wtro,i oo i iid°vabN> number of deaths from plague also.
In 208 towns in British India there wore 134 deathsfrom cholera, 136 deaths from smallpox and 102 deathsfrom plague. Of the deaths from oholera, Calcutta recorded47 ; Howrah 28 ; Khnlaa 11; Nabadwip 8; Bariaal 7; Sera-mpur, Titagarh, Bhatpara and Narayangang 4 oaeh; Muzaff-

Of the deaths from PlaguoBenares reoorded 22; Jaunpur 17; Muzaffaraagar 15; Gawn-poro 14; Ambala 12; Jhtknsi 7; Gorakhpur 5; Ferozabad 4,Vellore 2; Laoknow, Kalyan, Poona and Satara one eaoh.
(B) Indian States.—Amongst the Indian States shownin this statement, there was no town whioh had a high deathrate of 50 or over per thousand of the population.
In 14 towns of the Indian States there were L 4 deathsfrom smallpox of whioh Jamnagar oity recorded 7; Udaipurand Porbandar 3 eaoh and Jodhpur oity one. Cholera andplague were absent during the week.
