WHY ELVIS IS STILLTHE KING

1964 marks the tenth anniversary of Elvis A. Presley's firstrecording -"That's all right". Since then he has achieved

phenomenal success in all kinds of music. In 1957, he toppedthe R and B charts (mainly Negro) in the States, the onlywhite artiste to do so. In 1960, his recording of an oldNeapolitan love song " 0 sole mio," called " It's now ornever " sold five million copies. He has recorded spirituals,hymns, Hawaiian songs, soul and almost everything outsideof opera. He IS King -and a couple of million fans say so.-M. EVERYONE seems to have a digat Brian Poole for his disc -selection. Well, I think it's

only fair that Tommy Roe shouldbe the next one to be got at, overhis last two, "Everybody" and"Come On." Seems that he isn'thappy with a few things aroundhim and isn't afraid to tell theworld through his records. This"preaching" theme runs throughboth of these self -penned songs andthe backing is very similar. ANNOYINGONE thing really annoys me -

choice of tracks on L.P's. I

got the Crystals' "He's aRebel" and found I had four tracksalready. Likewise, "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah" by Bob B. Soxx and theBlue Jeans. The Beatles' first con-tained single hits. And BrianPoole's "Twist and Shout", Gerry'sfirst one and Roy Orbison's "InDreams". Surely most peoplewould already have bought thesingles -if an all -new L.P. hadbeen released by any of thesearistes. IT may be a source of delight toDavid Jacobs and others thatnot one American record

reached Number One in our chartslast year. Apparently ideas ofquality and originality don't enterinto it. It is galling for those ofus who can remember the originalsto have to listen to the scrappyversions of things like "Needlesand Pins," "Hippy Hippy Shake,""Stay," "Better Move On,""Candy Man" and so on. Among

the so-called wonderful versionof "Fever," by Peggy Lee. To

Meet the 'square' hit makersTHE INSIDE STORY OF THEBACHELORS CHART SUCCESS

THE way I'd describe theBachelors is . . . "The

surreptitious hit - makers."They bring out discs whichsound a trifle square to myears; they seem to cause lessthan the usual bally-hoo;and, blow me down, thenext thing you know isthey're up there in thecharts.

Like this single "Diane."An old number-around 40years old, in fact-and onewhich seems to be milesfrom the normal trendstoday. But, in double-quicktime, Messrs. Con and DecCluskey and John Stokeshave a huge hit on theirhands.

"Charmaine" started it alloff for them, of course.That previously had been amassive instrumental, string -dominated hit for Mantovani.Point of interest is that"Diane" was the flip side ofMonty's single . . .

In between there were"Far away places" (also old)and "Whispering" (ditto).But "Far away places" didn'tmake it, which suggests themore recent revivals standless chance than the onesfrom way, way back.

Says Con Cluskey: "To say

good old 'Diane' as being alucky sort of gal to have asa mascot."

Said Dec: "Then we reallydid have a lot of troublegetting the number to soundright. I think it took fourseparate sessions before itseemed to us to be on theright lines. We didn't wantit to be on a strongCountry style, then wecouldn't seem to get on withtwo other arrangements

given us by different people."Eventually Johnny Keat-

ing came up with the ideafor the final cutting. Veryslight -sounding string sectionand most of the other back-ing sound coming from abass guitar and drums. You'dhardly expect anything muchto happen from this sort ofchaos . . but bingo! Thereit is!"

Now the promotional workslides into top gear to getthe boys away in the States.They ran into trouble over"Whispering" there becauseApril Stevens and NinoTempo did so well on it,despite coming second intothe battle. But the radionetworks have helped theBachelors a lot.

Out this week -end is the"Presenting the Bachelors"album in the States-thereis to be a fair amount of

`HAIL TO THEEWHAT I meant to shout,

on meeting Allan Sher-man was " Hail to thee, fatperson-you saved us fromwar!" After all, that's whathe wants us to shout, isn'tit? But my prepared tributeto the funniest man onrecords went wrong.

First of all, I didn't recog-nise him immediately be-cause he wasnt' wearingthose horn -rimmed glasses,and anyway he's a lotshorter than I expected.And secondly. . . I forgotthe words.

But talking to this WarnerBrothers' star is interesting anddifferent. He explained how hestarted writing parodies to well-known songs while he was atschool. He didn't bore his school-mates with them . because hedidn't stay anywhere long enoughto do so. "I went to 21 differentschools during my career," he said.

This is not as sinister as itsounds. His father had to travela lot as a racing driver and auto-motive engineer-as well as theinventor of a coal -mining machine.

At the University of Illinois, Allanstarted in journalism and wrotelyrics and stories for three con-secutive Varsity Shows. He laterserved in the army, deep in theheart of Texas.

Later he wrote material forJerry Lester, Joe E. Lewis, JackieGleason, Frances Faye and ump-teen others. But the big breakwas in 1951, when he was 28. Withpartner Howard Merrill, hedreamed up the idea for the TVpanel show "I've got a secret,"which is now in its thirteenthAmerican year. Allan produced itfor the first six years.

So on to October, 1962, when hewas simply a plump, guitar -

strumming script -writer and pro-ducer who just liked to amuse hisfriends with his parodies on Jewishlife.

One month later, his "My son, thefolk singer" long -player had madehim the biggest -selling disc star inthe States. The way Allan tellsit, it was the simplest thing imag-inable. He stuck to the formula:take an old tune, preferably a folksong, re -write the lyrics and . .

Bingo!One suspects there must have

been more to it than that. JackBenny, notably a good audience forany comedian and especially GeorgeBurns, pronounced: "This fellerSherman is the funniest folk singereast of the Rockies and west ofthe Catskill." Jerry Lewis, whois NOT a good audience for anyother comedian, raved along aswell.

And each of Sherman's three LPreleases to date has been a numberone hit in the States. He made theBritish charts with his single "Hellomuddah, hello fadduh." Of course,Warner Brothers pulled out "Me,"to the tune of "Come back to Sor-

rento," to tie in with his nine -daystay in Britain.

Allan clearly worries about thedifferent trends in world comedy.He realises that some of hismaterial is slanted to specificaudiences. But in the States hehas become something of an institu-tion and can pack the biggest hallsin the country.

Why those full-blooded lush back-ings, by people like Lou Busch,on his recent records? Because,he says, it adds weight to theparodies. It pushes the new -writtenlyrics along, giving the whole thingan air of seriousness which is dis-pelled once you actually hear thewords.

A unique talent, Mr. Sherman.A quietly efficient man who reallybecame a star through accident.

He lives, now, in a smart part ofBel Air, California, with his wifeand family-a boy of 14 and agirl of 11.

I'm hoping it won't be longbefore he pays us another visit.

Then I'll remember the properway to "hail" this fat person.

THE BACHELORS. Those three likeable lads from Ireland shoot into the top placesonce again with their plaintive rendering of the oldie "Diane," which must be asfamiliar to the young record buyers now as it was to their parents many years ago.

"As you may know, we'rereally interested in folkmusic and there's a wholelot of that in the Stateswhich we want to study."

The boys are convincedthat folk will be IN in ashort time - though theyagree that hosts of peoplehave said this for a long,long time!

The Bachelors have hitthis sales peak in a hurry.It was only a year or soback that they were flat,stoney broke, living in asingle room in London andjust hoping that someone

would cough up enoughmoney to get them a packetof cornflakes. They'd actuallykicked off in show businessas a harmonica - playingteam, again concentrating onfolksey-styled material.

RAT -RACESome months ago, the boys

suggested they wouldn'treally like a Number Onehit, because they felt itwould put them right in the"rat -race," with all theattendant worries aboutkeeping up the standards.Easy-going lads, all three,they wondered if they couldcarry on being easy-goingif a calamitious Number Onecame along.

There's a fair chance now

that they won't be able tohelp themselves. And allbecause of a record that,quite frankly, they didn'tparticularly like!

Just one thing now cloudslife for the Bachelors. Thebusiness of repeating overand over again that theyreally ARE Bachelors. "The sort of music I likeis gospelly material, sung bycoloured artistes," she said."That's fine. But then peoplestarted saying I sounded asif I was coloured. I thinkCliff Richard said I was 'Awhite Negress' . . . again,that's fine. But the import-ant word is 'WHITE', not'Negress.'

"Then i got to know TimiYuro over here. She's oneof my favourite singers.Timi's problem is that she

feels you have to CRY everynumber and this isn't verycommercial here. But she'sgreat because she's so IN-VOLVED in her work. She'llspend her off - duty timelistening to her own records.

"Does this make her soundself-centred? It isn't really.She is just involved. Everyso often she'll follow aphrase and say 'What a gas!'She's really part of it all. Itmakes her difficult at times,but it's really her.

"I want to be an inter-national name. I don't thinkone big record in the Statesdoes all that much, thoughit's a start. But I want toconcentrate, c o u n t r y bycountry, on places likeFrance. To be honest, Idon't think much of what isaccepted as show business inthis country. You know, 16weeks in a summer season,then a pantomime or some-thing.

THE Beatles have doneit! - and H 0 W

they've done it! They'vetaken America bystorm. Everyone is talk-ing about them. Teen-agers are wearing theirw i g s, sporting theirsweat -shirts and singingtheir songs.

One New York radio sta-tion does practically nothingbut play their records. Infact, people are saying thatLiverpool's hairy foursomehave made more impact thanElvis Presley ever did.

Their reception at NewYork's Kennedy Interna-tional Airport last Fridaywas fantastic to say theleast. One police officer whohad served at the airport forover ten years told me: "Ithink the world has gonemad."

And no wonder.For nearly 5,000 teenagers.

most of whom had playedhookey from school for theday, were there to welcomethe group. Some werescreaming. Others sang"Don't say anything badabout the Beatles," to thetune of "I want to hold yourhand." Banners and placardshailing the boys appearedeverywhere.

As the huge jet air -linerground to a halt on the tar-mac, pandemonium broke

loose among the 1,500 young-sters who'd climbed on tothe third floor observationdeck. They broke into chantsof "We want the Beatles."

Then, as the main group ofthe fans inside the buildingrealised the plane hadlanded, they went hystericaland the police, who hadturned out in force, had afull-time job controlling thecrowds.

After a five-minute picturesession on the ramp, the boyswent to their first Americanengagement-a press confer-ence. And I'm quite surethey've never experiencedanything like that in theirfantastic career.

The room was very smalland packed from corner tocorner with New York Pres-men, photographers and T.V.cameramen . . all very ex-cited and eager to see whatall the noise was about.

WITTYThough looking, and no

doubt feeling, very tiredafter their flight, the boysdid very well and made a

very good impression withtheir off-the-cuff remarks andwitty comments. Asked aboutwhether they wore wigs, Paulreplied as usual: "I've gotto I'm bald." Someone elseasked if they would give outwith a song. John replied:"We only sing for money."

LUSHAnd the reporters loved

these exchanges. Said onecolumnist: "Gee, these boysare a gas."

Getting from the confer-ence to the parked Cadillacswhich were to drive the fourboys to the lush Plaza Hotelin New York was quite aproblem. The fans, deter-mined to get hold of aBeatle and perhaps run offwith him, broke through allthe barriers in their efforts.

And the crowds were thereagain at the hotel. Thescreamers were out in forceand there were several yellsof "Get a divorce, please,John." Once into their plushsuites, the boys had timeonly for a quick breather

them a happy stay in theStates and "all success" onthe shows.

It's fab, all right. Theboys still don't know whathas hit them. Nor, for thatmatter, do millions ofAmerican fans.

Campbell on May 24, 1838-hewas named after the greatJamaican leader of the time, Buslamante. Ile learned tosing at the age of four, and later became interested in

boxing. He started his singing career around street comas,and later moved to the "Glass Bucket Club, From then onhis rise to fame as the King of Blue Beal was phenomenal.Derrick Morgan is also a great Jamaican Blue Beat singer,and like Buster he has tapped the Jamaican charts.

And at the moment threerecord companies are thrivingon the Blue Beat craze whichis just being taken up by theindustry in general as apotential money -spinner forall concerned.

Just for the record, and forthose who probably haven'theard it yet, just what is bluebeat? Well, it's a strictlyJamaican sound with a pulsat.ing on -beat played on stopchords throbbing mercilesslythrough the disc. Most of thesongs are down-to-earth itemsthat don't usually deal withlove, and the tunes are strictlysecondary to the beat. TheMase has been 'in' with theods since last summer be.

cause of the marvellous dancebeat and of course has beenbought by the West Indianain Britain for many yearsnow. But it was only whenthe larger record companiesheard of fantastic sales forsuch blue beat discs as "Mad.ness", "Carolina" and "Blaing Fire" that they realisedit could mean something.

ORIGINSAnyway, let's take a look at

the small blue beat companies-after all one of the attrac-tions the music had to theMods was that the music wasexclusive to the smaller andvirtually unknown labels.

Firstly there's the Blue Beatlabel itself. Owned by Melo-disc records run by SiggyJackson this label was formedsome two years back. It boastsmany of the biggest blue beatartistes including PrinceBuster. Derrick Morgan, andthe Folks Brothers.

"The blue beat rhythm itselfwas started by Prince Buster"says Siggy. "He had beensinging in Kingston for awhile, then he invented thisnew rhythm. His success sincethen has been phenomenal.He has packed halls in Brixtonand his "Madness' has midover 120,600 copies. That's ourbest seller that's top of ourown little chart. Other gooddiscs for as are 'Carolina' bythe Folks Brothers and ournew one 'Tom Hark Goes BlueBeat'. Although Buster in-vented the blue beat rhythm,I invented the name for ourlabel."

The other two blue beatcompanies don't agree aboutthe origin of blue beat. Both

Island and R & B say that therhythm haslways been pre-dominate In Jamaican music.

Island records is run byChris Blackwell, an enterpris.log young white Jamaicanwho was fascinated by bluebeat and started his own com-pany here well over a Yearago. His best seller is "BlazingFire", while another good oneis "Housewives Choice". Mostof his numbers are recordedin Jamaica, unlike Melodiscwho record hem. But recentlyIsland have been recordingsome of their best artisteshere including one Millie, whohad a disc recently issued byFontana.

"So far all of our discs havesold well and we haven't hadone flop" Chris told me. "Mya is to see a blue beat disci the charts-even if it wasnmonly at No. 50."

Chris also owns two morelabels. One is Sue, the greatU.S. R & B label which Chrisbought when he was last inthe States. Some of America'sbest unissued R & B discs cannow be obtained through thislabel. The other is BlackSwan, more of a Calypso typelabel.

The other record companyis R & B, the smallest of thethree. Like Island they areselling very well still to theJamaicans, while Melodisc areselling more to the Mods. Runby Ben leen who also runsthe R & B record shop inStamford Hill, sales have beengoing up considerably. One of

their tap discs is "OrangeStreet", an organ instrumentalby Georgie Fame & The BlueFlames.

And at the moment threerecord companies are thrivingon the Blue Beat craze whichis just being taken up by theindustry in general as apotential money -spinner forall concerned.

Just for the record, and forthose who probably haven'theard it yet, just what is bluebeat? Well, it's a strictlyJamaican sound with a pulsat.ing on -beat played on stopchords throbbing mercilesslythrough the disc. Most of thesongs are down-to-earth itemsthat don't usually deal withlove, and the tunes are strictlysecondary to the beat. TheMase has been 'in' with theods since last summer be.

cause of the marvellous dancebeat and of course has beenbought by the West Indianain Britain for many yearsnow. But it was only whenthe larger record companiesheard of fantastic sales forsuch blue beat discs as "Mad.ness", "Carolina" and "Blaing Fire" that they realisedit could mean something.

ORIGINSAnyway, let's take a look at

the small blue beat companies-after all one of the attrac-tions the music had to theMods was that the music wasexclusive to the smaller andvirtually unknown labels.

Firstly there's the Blue Beatlabel itself. Owned by Melo-disc records run by SiggyJackson this label was formedsome two years back. It boastsmany of the biggest blue beatartistes including PrinceBuster. Derrick Morgan, andthe Folks Brothers.

"The blue beat rhythm itselfwas started by Prince Buster"says Siggy. "He had beensinging in Kingston for awhile, then he invented thisnew rhythm. His success sincethen has been phenomenal.He has packed halls in Brixtonand his "Madness' has midover 120,600 copies. That's ourbest seller that's top of ourown little chart. Other gooddiscs for as are 'Carolina' bythe Folks Brothers and ournew one 'Tom Hark Goes BlueBeat'. Although Buster in-vented the blue beat rhythm,I invented the name for ourlabel."

The other two blue beatcompanies don't agree aboutthe origin of blue beat. Both

Island and R & B say that therhythm haslways been pre-dominate In Jamaican music.

Island records is run byChris Blackwell, an enterpris.log young white Jamaicanwho was fascinated by bluebeat and started his own com-pany here well over a Yearago. His best seller is "BlazingFire", while another good oneis "Housewives Choice". Mostof his numbers are recordedin Jamaica, unlike Melodiscwho record hem. But recentlyIsland have been recordingsome of their best artisteshere including one Millie, whohad a disc recently issued byFontana.

"So far all of our discs havesold well and we haven't hadone flop" Chris told me. "Mya is to see a blue beat disci the charts-even if it wasnmonly at No. 50."

Chris also owns two morelabels. One is Sue, the greatU.S. R & B label which Chrisbought when he was last inthe States. Some of America'sbest unissued R & B discs cannow be obtained through thislabel. The other is BlackSwan, more of a Calypso typelabel.

The other record companyis R & B, the smallest of thethree. Like Island they areselling very well still to theJamaicans, while Melodisc areselling more to the Mods. Runby Ben leen who also runsthe R & B record shop inStamford Hill, sales have beengoing up considerably. One of

their tap discs is "OrangeStreet", an organ instrumentalby Georgie Fame & The BlueFlames.

KENNY TALKS FRANKLY ON JAllKENNY BALL is probably

the only hit -makingtrad man left. His new discis a vocal titled "Caterina"-yes it IS the Perry Comosong of a short while back.This is Kenny's first vocalfor some time, his last being"So do I" which in turn washis first since "Midnightin Moscow." The newone is a rollicking merrynumber that should takeKenny right back into thecharts, after his chart misswith "Washington Square". Isay chart miss because thisdisc has sold more thanseveral of his hits - "Onlyover a longer time" saysKenny glumly.

"But they say trad is dead.Well, for me and many otherbig bands it's certainly notdead yet. At least we haven'tfelt the pinch, although nodoubt if Rhythm and Bluespushes in, we will feel it.

NO BOOM

"Is there an R and B boom?I don't think there is an Rand B boom, but there mostdefinitely is a boom in aform of music that peoplelike to attach the tag 'Rhythmand Blues' to. Consequentlyall the beat and rock groupswho can get a member toplay harmonica after afashion are calling them-selves R and B groups.

"Please don't think I haveanything against R and B. Ihaven't. But the same thingis happening to it as hap-pened to trad. All the in-ferior and imitation groupsare jumping on the "band-wagon, and eventually the

public will become sick ofthe watered down varietyand want something new. Inplaces that's already happen-ing, and the comparison be-tween the two forms of musicand their boom is close butnot too close. For instanceIt and B gets very close torock sometimes. That putsmany people off. Again, jazzclubs were going ages beforethe so-called trad boom. Andthey'll keep going for years.The trad clubs which sprangup for the boom are nowthe ones that are switchingover completely to R and B.

"And the trad-based groupsthat are switching to R andB? well, many of them onlyjumped on the trad band-wagon. Others, like ManfredMann and Mike Cotton werealways very blues -influenced.

Mike made many discs whichwere more akin to R and Beven in the days of the tradboom. I don't know what thefuss is about."

DEMANDKenny himself is currently

extremely busy - he'sscheduled for many manytours and international ap-pearances including theStates. For he's greatly indemand there, and his disccompany in the States, Kapp,asked Kenny to record "FromRussia with love" as a topside. In Britain it's on theflip. Which is real value -for -money from the man who'llkeep the trad flag flying formany years to come, tradboom, R and B boom, or noboom at all.

I had the good fortuneof talking to Ben E. King,one of my favourite singersof all time, last week. Benis in England now, and isembarking upon a series oftours in which he is merelya supporting act. But formy money, and a lot ofothers he is THE attraction.I asked Ben a lot of ques-tions about himself whichI thought RM's many readerswho are also Ben E. Kingfans would have liked to

music? Well, as you couldguess by my discs I lovethe Latin sound. My favour-ite of my own discs is"Spanish Harlem." I'll tellyou a story about that one.When I cut the first sessionwithout the Drifters it wasbecause New York was hitby the worst snowstorms inyears. I was the only one ofthe Drifters who turned up,so the engineers and Ithought that we wouldn'twaste the recording time,and that we'd cut a disc.The result was "First TasteOf Love" which we were allpretty pleased with. Butthey wanted a Phil Spectorcomposition "Spanish Har-lem" on the flip. We recordedit, but I wasn't happy.

WE'VE lots of hinny happymemories of the threefabulous weeks we've spent

on the Ronettes' tour. Highlightof the shows was the friendlyatmosphere hack -stage. Estelle.Ronnie. and Nedra were greatcompany, and gained. friendswherever they went. It was notunusual to see Rte entire castadmiringly watching from thewings whilst the fabulous three-some wowed the audience night -after -night.

We'll always remember theswinging party that Nedra gave(in Bristol to celebrate her lathbirthday-it was just fab hear-ing all the different accentsjoining in for a definitely dif-ferent version of "Happy Birth-day".

Pleased to say we got ongreat with everyone who tookpart in the show. Brian -tones ofthe Rolling Stones and myselfhad some good chuckles over thestories of the animosity that'ssupposed to exist be t w cc nNorthern and Southern beat -groups. The Stones proved greatpals; on several nights we helpedeach other out by swoppingequipment to save precious timeduring the changeover betweenacts.

Besides making new friends,we were pleased to renew oldfriendships with Johnny Kidd andthe Pirates, Bern Elliott andMarty Wilde. Marty gave someuseful tips on harmonica playingto our bass -guitarist Les Braid.Les. who had recently bought amouth -organ, was driving uspotty by practising in thedressing -room. I'm pleased tosay he's improving fast thanksto Marty's help.

It was nice to see Dusty Spring-field again. Dusty popped -in onthe first night of the tour towish us luck. Julie Crant wasanother welcome visitor.

We had a particularly pleasantsurprise at Walthamstow. Ourmanager Jim Ireland took us Intoa restaurant where we weregreeted by 30 of our staunchestfans from Liverpool, who hadhired a coach to make the longjourney from Scouseland. It wasa very happy reunion --only dis-appointment being that the res-taurant didn't serve chip-butties.

Bunks are now second on thelist of Ralph Ellis's favouritefoods. On the lour he developed

memories'a passion for chocolate toscuits.and fans began leaving half -Pound packets of his favouritenosh at the stage -door, now. wehave to ration hint to, six bis-cuits a day.

Food provided the most un-usual incident of the whole tour.At Kettering, a large cake wasleft in our dressing -room. Wewere just about to tuck -In. whenour drummer. Norman Kulilke.spotted a package In the bottomof the box. It contained a cake-icer and a note asking us toautograph the cake for a fan'sbirthday party. Though we weredisappointed at missing a feast.we did our best to ice ournames on the cake. It wasn't agreat success. BY the time we'dfinished we had so much Icingsugar on our hand -uniforms welooked like snowmen.

I only hope we are able totour with the Ronettes when theyvisit Britain again. Meanwhile.we're looking forward to twoforthcoming tours: one withJohn Lesion, Mike Same and theRolling Stones: the other withGene Pitney. Billy J. and a

great new LIVERPOOL groupcalled "TILE ESCORTS."

come from the Berry Gordylabels - I love Martha &The Vandellas, and Smokey& The Miracles. Record -u IseI haven't any further re-cording plans except to re-cord some standards lateron here in Britain. In myrecords I try .to vary thestyles as much as I can. Iknow that I can sit andlisten to an artiste for aday if his songs are varied,and the styles different,

"I try to be like that my-self, There have been a lotof remarks about me andthe Drifters. Well the factis that we are all still per-sonal friends. And althougha lot of people say that thepresent lead singer soundslike me I can assure themit's not deliberate. For whenI heard their first disc with-out me I thought he wastrying to sound a bit likeme. So I went along Jo thestudio to find out. And hesang as naturally as can be!Their style hasn't varied be-cause they have a successfulformula.

NEW GROUP"I started with the Drifters

in 1958 It was a completelynew group then, because theold group had broken upwhen Clyde McPhatter wentsolo We were previously theFive Crowns, but when wesigned with Atlantic recordsthey changed our name tothe Drifters. Our first discwas of course "There GoesMy Baby" which I wrote. Ido a bit of writing some-times - well, not exactlywriting. I sit down with this

old guitar I have that's miss-ing all but three strings-no one else could possiblyplay it but I pick out tunesand when I have somethingI'll play it for someone whocan write it.

"When I first heard thatsomeone wanted me inBritain I couldn't believe it.I thought it would be an-other big let-dowrf for meat the last minute. But whenI was on the 'plane I realised

CHART CHATTER

R& B fans will get a shock when they look at the chart this, week. For this must be the biggest R & B break -throughfor some time. Dionne Warwick comes in with her original

"Anyone who had a heart," while on the first week of releaseChuck Berry looks like having a splash with "Nadine." And mostastonishing of all, "Monkey Time" star Major Lance makes it withthe new brand of U.S. R & B, the fantastic "Urn, um, um, um,

um." Two Bo Diddley's also break in the L.P's and E.P's.At the top half of the charts the Searchers still hold on, but

there's strong upward movements from the Bachelors and CiliaBlack. Manfred Mann also rise, while it looks as though the

Searchers will go on to sell a million in "Needles and Pins."But there's still a raging battle for the top, and we don't knowwhat next week's chart will bring. Two previously unknownschartwise come through - the Unit Two Plus Four with theirfolksy "Green Fields," and Tony Sheveton makes it on Oriolewith his Beaty "A million drums." Cliff makes a surprise return-but not for long we should imagine-with "Don't talk to him."Altogether a very interesting and fast - moving chart with plentyof bubbling undercurrents.

Jake, even Black Jake (from "CaptainPugwash"), Anthony Paul Jackson is themost talkative, and the most verbally comicalof the team topping the charts with "Needlesand pins." He was born in Liverpool and bredin Liverpool. Except for a short evacuationperiod in Wales that is. Anyway, let Tony

tell you the short andtumultuous story of his life,with and without theSearchers, for whom heplays bass guitar.

" Well, that's an exaggera-tion. I don't actually PLAYbass guitar. I don't playany instrument. I'd LIKEto play bass of course, andorgan. I met the Searchers,or John and Mike at leastwhen I was singing in theCross Keys pub. I used tosing in the pub for the freebeer. We teamed up andlater met Chris. Thosewere the early times. It wasgood playing in a group-although I had played in askiffle group before butthat tailed off.

" We didn't used to getmuch money playing. Butwe didn't play only for themoney. There were thebirds, they used to flockaround the groups. And thebeer of course. But soonwe began to get other en-gagements. And the othergroups were springing up.There were the Quarrymen-we all know who they arctoday-and Gerry Marsdenand the Marsbars. I gotmarried four years ago butit seems the papers haveonly just found out about it.

"I was glad when weturned pro. Mike and Johnweren't keen at all, in factwe almost had to force themat gunpoint to leave theirjobs. But I was glad. Ihurt my arm and hand in anaccident at work and I can't
