Father of H.G.R., Gwendolyn and Marjorie Mews qqv . Mews was one of Newfoundland's senior civil servants from 1898 to 1935. Mews began his working life as a clerk with the firm of J. & W. Stewart. In 1893, shortly a fter his marriage to a daughter of Surveyor General Henry J.B. Woods qv, he entered the civi l service as an accountant with government telegraphs. He was subsequently transferred to th e Colonial Secretary's office. When the civil service was reorganized in 1898 he was appointe d first deputy Colonial Secretary. Mews served in this position (later known as Secretary fo r Home Affairs) until his retirement in 1935. He then became secretary of an inquiry into New foundland's fisheries (the Seafisheries or Kent Commission).

Mews won the Jubile e scholarship in her final high school year and studied art at Mount Allison, where she taugh t from 1918 to 1922. She later taught at the University of Oklahoma and, after marrying in 19 25, moved to Boulder, Colorado. While Mews rarely returned to Newfoundland, she reportedly ca used a sensation with a number of cubist works at an exhibition in St. John's in 1927.
