Dear friend of Trinity, (October 2018)
This month, I begin sharing with you the beginning of an important lesson I've been preparing for both families and individual students of God's Word at Trinity. And to get the most out of this session the texts I would suggest for your meditation are the 7 Petitions of the Lord's Prayer in Luther's Small Cate-chism. I hope you enjoy: Praying the Catechism - Part 1 With much thanks to Doctors Jim Nestingen and John Pless, who are the mas-ter teachers of the following ways of approaching Luther’s Small Catechism in a more positive and playful manner! Luther’s Small Catechism for personal use and study How can you get the most benefit from it. I don’t think I’ve talked about that enough. So, here is a very important lesson, I’ve been working through, in order to give it to the families and individual students of God’s Word here at Trinity Lutheran Church. Now if you just read this Catechism cover to cover, there’s a lot of good things in there, but definitely, I don’t think that’s how you get the max benefit out of this. Its a document for study, we do what’s called Catechesis in the Church, where it’s brought to heart and enlightens your thoughts of God and your un-derstanding of the Bible’s teaching, but its also much more than that! The Big Question? How do you get the gold that’s inside of this Catechism into your life? I love reading and meditating on God’s Word here! And one of the most im-portant things is establishing a regular discipline. Now this has taken me longer than I would have liked in my life. But now I do morning and evening prayer in the catechism and I share that when I can with my children. Doing Morning and Evening prayer I always have one psalm and I use a set of texts and devotions so I’m always thinking and can be in discussion with friends and family around those texts. And when you do something like that you get more and more familiar, and you start hearing more and more. So using the Catechism daily, starting with morning prayer and then taking one of the chief parts, you cycle through it over a week, and your questions start to sharpen and your perceptions to deepen. So its a lot of fun! And it might really help us if we worked in our homes and at times in the Church, learning the Catechism with more playfulness! Perhaps think of learning by games like Catechism Baseball: First, the kid who was able to an-swer the question could ask the question of one of his classmates or sib-lings. So we all work together and it can be playful and fabulous! This makes it more easy to memorize and learn by heart. Luther had suggested kind of playing games with it too, taking Two Pouch-es: kind of a Love pouch or a Faith pouch, as he called it, and if you found a text, you would assign it to one of those pouches. Fun! Is this talking about faith? or is this talking about love? That’s really what the Catechism is about: Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, worked through the Holy Spirit. As the Spirit gives us access to the Father through the Gospel and Love toward the neighbor. And the Catechism is deceptively simple, because Luther uses these texts that had long been used within the Church: The Commandments, the Creed, the Lord’s Prayer. And its sometimes said that familiarity breeds contempt, but in (Continued on page 2)

this case, familiarity actually
leads you deeper and deeper into
the text. I want to remind you
students of God’s Word, of a little
phrase from C.S. Lewis. Where
C.S. Lewis talks, not about mas-
tering a text, but growing up and
into a text. And that’s what you
really do with the Catechism —
You grow up and into the Cate-
chism. You think of something
like the Lord’s Prayer, and most
of us who grew up in Christian
homes never remember a time
when we did not know the Lord’s
Prayer. We prayed the Lord’s
Prayer at church and in family
devotions. And a child prays the
Lord’s Prayer in one way; a teen-
ager yet another way; a middle
age person yet another way; and
when someone is coming to their
death, I think they pray the Lord’s
Prayer yet in a different kind of
way.
Even though these words are the
same, and the words are there
throughout one’s lifetime, you’re
really growing into these words,
and the words kind of bend and
shape you as the experiences of
life challenge and change. I think
this is what Luther meant when
he would often talk about, not
just learning the Catechism,
but Praying the Catechism! The
text of the Catechism really be-
comes kind of fodder for our
prayer and shapes the way we
think about God, the world, think
about ourselves, and how we re-
spond then in faith toward Christ,
and love toward one another...
Stay tuned: In coming months I
might share more about this,
which I think is a very important
lesson for us as the People of God
in this place. Happy October!
In Jesus,
