Ctrl-Alt-Del-Give the (Re) Boot to Work-Life BalanceOnly 23 per cent of working Canadians are highly satisfied with life. In fact, one-third of Canadians feel they have more work to do than time permits. Work-life balance is not a gender issue. Men have the same issues balancing career

and family as women do and also struggle with obtaining work-life balance. With technological advances coupled with more women entering the workforce due to economic pressures, work-life balance can seem evasive and unobtainable. But with essential tools, tips and strategies, employees can minimize stress, maximize efficiency, improve productivity and boost positivity both at work and at home. Increased work-life balance leads to lower employee absenteeism and turnover rates and higher levels of employee engagement.

Luncheon Keynote   12:30–1:30 pmLaura Darby Management Biologist, Thunder Bay District Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry

Bear Aware: A Predatory Encounter Up CloseOn October 4th, 2011, Laura Darby was attacked by a predatory black bear in a remote forested area north of Thunder Bay, Ontario. After five hours, three helicopters

and with the assistance of numerous individuals, Laura escaped the deadly grip of the bear and was evacuated to the care of the nearby hospital. Laura had lost a significant amount of blood and yet continued to narrowly cling on to life. Every minute counted. Every helping hand tipped the scale in her favour. She sustained life-threatening injuries requiring several surgeries, months of treatment and ongoing recovery. Today, Laura lives to share her experience, and advocates for the importance of safety training and preparedness in the wilderness.

Joint health and safety committees are both a legally required and integral part of your healthy and safe work environment. However, having a legal Committee means nothing if that committee isn’t effective.
