looking at basic ethical themes such as, justice,

freedom, happiness, and human nature. We

will attempt to gain a better understanding

regarding such timely questions as: How can

we better recognize contradictions between

the ideals we claim to espouse, and the actual

ways of the world? How can we quit being so

quick to label others, and to label ourselves? In

a world so seemingly overwhelmed by unin-

tended consequences, no good deed ever

goes unpunished, why even bother? If you’re

looking for an opportunity to contribute or be

enlightened by an honest open discussion of

the philosophical, ethical, and moral trends

facing the world today, drop by the café.

Letting Go Instructor: Shirley Mahood On: 11/1/2013 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Fee: $5

Much of the stress we experience is because

we are not willing to surrender to what

is. Some things we cannot change, much as we

might like to. But how do we let go of such

things as bad relationships, unhealthy habits,

unrealistic expectations, or guilt, for exam-

ple. Letting go may not be easy, but the re-

wards are great.

Understanding Human Nature Instructor: Diane Sanden On: 11/4/2013 6:00 p.m.-7:30 p.m. Fee: $5

A look at basic human nature, highlighting the

work of Alfred Adler and William James, consid-

ered to be some of the modern fathers of psy-

chology. Adler is famous for his work on “birth

order” and how we seek to increase our power

in the world. As social beings we create a style

in life in response to our environment and what

we feel we lack. William James was a philoso-

pher who defined psychology as the ‘science of

mental life’. Because we are creatures of habit,

we must work hard to forge positive habitual

behaviors in life.

People Skills Instructor: Diane Sanden On: 11/11/2013 6:00 p.m.-7:30 p.m. Fee: $5

A look at communication skills highlighting

Robert Bolten’s work in this area. Bolton wrote

People Skills: How to Assert Yourself, Listen to

Others and Resolve Conflicts. His research offers

insights into how to get what you want and

bring out the best in your relationships, with-

out changing your personality or compromising

your values.

Body Donation 101 Instructor: Linda Olson On: 11/12/2013 1:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. Fee: $5

Learn the facts about body donation for re-

search and medical education and things you

can do to prepare so that your wishes are car-

ried out. The donation of one's body for medi-

cal research and education provides physicians

the ability to research specific disease proc-

esses, assists with the creation of progressive

medical devices, perfects new surgical proce-

dures and provides a superior approach for stu-

dents studying complex human anatomy. Dur-

ing the presentation, Linda will cover who can

donate; what the donation is used for; when

ones makes the decision to donate; why people

donate and more.

RELIGIONRELIGIONRELIGIONRELIGION

The Meaning of Buddhist Symbols Instructor: TBD On: 10/21/2013 1:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. Fee: $5

The Eight Auspicious Symbols are very mean-

ingful religious symbols in Buddhism, revealing

essential teachings and meditations on the

Buddhist path to enlightenment. Through

learning the meaning of each one we can learn

what we need to abandon and what we need

to accomplish in order to become happy and

benefit others. This workshop also serves as an

excellent introduction to Buddhism.

Islam 101 Instructor: Azra Hussain On: 10/24/2013 1:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. Fee: $10

Islam is one of the fastest-growing religions in

the United States today. According to one sur-

vey, there are 1,209 mosques in America, well

over half founded in the last 20 years. Between

17 and 30 percent of American Muslims are

converts to the faith. At the center of both tra-

ditional American life and the lives of the gen-

erally more recent Muslim immigrants is the

family. As Shahed Amanullah, an engineer who

lives in San Francisco, California, puts it,

“American values are, by and large, very consis-

Future Evolution of the Human Mind Instructor: Tom Lombardo Starts: 9/26/2013 until 12/5/2013 10 meetings 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Fee: $70

Speculative visions of the future, although of-

ten set in strange high-tech environments, usu-

ally portray humans possessing the same men-

tal make-up as they have today. It seems highly

doubtful that this view of future human psy-

chology is correct. As history and science re-

veal, human nature is transformative and

evolving, and not some single unchanging real-

ity. Generously sprinkled with both contempo-

rary non-fiction resources and visions and sci-

ence fiction scenarios, we will discuss how fu-

ture developments in scientific psychology,

brain research, the study of consciousness, bi-

ology and biotechnology, nanotechnology,

computer technology and robotics, education,

spirituality, human society and culture, and

even physics and space travel will transform

and enhance the capacities and qualities of the

human mind. And we go further, considering

the possible, indeed highly likely, psychological

and biological transcendence of humanity.

The Deluge: Noah’s Flood Instructor: Robert E. Farrell On: 10/7/2013 1:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. Fee: $5

world-wide catastrophe known as the Deluge

(Noah’s Flood). The Deluge that appears in The

Old Testament as well as ancient stories such as

the Sumerian Epic of Gilgamesh and the older

Babylonian Atra-hasis epic will be discussed.

Various dates and places for the event pro-

posed by other researchers and are discussed.

Various hypotheses will be presented as well as

Dr. Farrell’s own conclusion that the event re-

corded by the Babylonians and Sumerians oc-

curred in Mesopotamia about 14,800 years ago

as a result of the Post Glacial Sea Rise.

The Science Behind Alien Encounters Instructor: Robert E. Farrell Starts: 11/4/2013 until 11/5/2013 2 meetings 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Fee: $10

This lecture covers topics from cosmology and

astronomy to anthropology and ancient be-

liefs to address the questions: Are we being

visited? What are the amazing similarities be-

tween what the Sumerians knew about our so-

lar system six thousand years ago and what

present day astronomers know today? Are the

aliens trying to communicate with us? How can

one determine if a crop circle formation is

"real" or man-made? How do UFOs accelerate at

100 Gs and make right angle turns ? How do

the craft propel themselves, change colors,

and how do they "cloak" themselves? How is it

possible to create gravitational field propul-

sion? This is explained using both classical and

relativistic physics.

of murder mysteries? Do you get your kicks

from Agatha Christie, Sherlock Holmes or CSI or

Midsummer Murders? Join Dr. Ken Snowdowne

on a short course of how forensic scientists

gather evidence from a crime scene, finger

print analysis, blood stains, tire marks and bal-

The Gila River Valley of Central Arizona has long

been recognized as the heartland of the Hoho-

kam cultural tradition. Between A.D. 500 and

1450, Hohokam populations living along the

Gila River built hundreds of miles of canals and

farmed thousand of acres of land. The largest

of these canal systems - known as the Casa

Grande system - extended for more than 20

miles from east of modern day Florence to

west of Coolidge. Over the past 15 years, ar-

chaeologists have learned a great deal about

the operation of the Casa Grande system and

the history of the farming villages established

along it. Dr. Craig will present an overview of

this research and discuss its implications for

understanding Hohokam social and political

organization. Class 2 is a day-trip (car pooling

will be coordinated) to Casa Grande National

Monument with a guided tour of the Monu-

What Makes Us So Good? Here’s Just A Few of Our Great Instructors:

Dr. Leo Abrami studied at the Charles Baudouin Institute of Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy, Geneva, Swit-zerland and the Institute of Logotherapy, Berkeley, California. He received a M.A.H.L. degree and ordination at

the Hebrew Union College, Cincinnati, Ohio. He is the author of an Introduction to Logotherapy in French and

contributed to "The Dead Sea Scrolls Uncovered" edited by Robert Eisenman and Michael Wise. He is presently

writing a book on the Jewish presence in the New Testament.

Upon retirement from working in the Court System, Mr. Larry Anderson was asked to serve as a Volunteer

instructor for the AARP Driver Safety program. He is a certified instructor in both Arizona where he

spends half his time and in Minnesota. Participants say they enjoy his class because he presents very im-

portant information with a heaping portion of humor. In the Court System, he wore several hats; among

them were Education, Training and Development Director for the courts. A part of the responsibility in that

job was to insure over 400 employees had access to various training and development opportunities includ-

ing dealing with change. Using humor as a base for his teaching, part of the change process is to identify

and acknowledge the emotional impact some changes have on our daily activities so we can take control

and live our lives on our own terms.

Dr. Anthony M. DiGiovanni, D.O., graduated from the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine; He

served an internship and medical residency at Detroit Osteopathic Hospital. His gastroenterology fellow-

ship was completed at University of Michigan. He practiced in Michigan from 1973 to 2000, was chief of Gastroenterology for 18 years at William Beaumont Hospital in Troy, Michigan and served as a member of

the clinical faculty at Michigan State University. He practiced at Luke AF base from 2000 to 2004.He re-

tired in 2004. He is a fellow in the American Osteopathic Association, and member of the American Col-

lege of Gastroenterology, The American Gastroenterological Association, The American Society for Gas-

trointestinal Endoscopy.

Dr. Robert Farrell received his Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from Ohio State Univer-

sity, his MBA from Western New England College and his Doctor of Engineering from the University of

Massachusetts. He is now retired from Penn State University as Associate Professor Emeritus. For most

of his life, Dr. Farrell has been interested in ufology. Twenty years ago, he began doing serious research
