4.1.2. MallorcaMallorca is the bigest island of the archipelago and its as well the capital island where
the capital city (Palma) is. As well as Ibiza, it has lots of tourist coming there every year,
specially from Germany and the United Kingdom.
Around 900,000 people are registered as habitants there although in summer its
population is multiplied for three. As well as Ibiza, Mallorcas first economic resource is
tourism, up to the point to have had in the past the biggest airport in Spain (now that
one is Madrid since the new terminal T4 was opened). Then, industry is the second
economic resource.
There are more than one airport in the island but the only one used for public
transport is the one called Palma de Mallorca Son San Joan:

Both runways are the 4E category.
4.1.3. MenorcaMenorca is the second island in extension in the Baleares archipelago. Its population
nevertheless is very reduced: Around 93.000 habitants.
Menorca is the less touristic island from the main three, the reason why is that during
the dictator Franco time and specially during the 60s this island was considered as a
very strategist island as its the land which is in the most east , so it was strongly
occupied by the military service. That time the economy of the island was based on the
consumption of those soldiers. Nowadays, the military presence on the island is much
less but the Island hasnt reached yet such a level of tourism as the other main islands
of the archipelago.
Its economy is deeply based on artisanal works as well as on agriculture and animal
exploitation.

The island is economically based on the first and third sectors, the first is dedicated to
the agriculture and animal exploitation for milk, cheese and wool. The third is
dedicated to tourism although the island hasnt got much as there is not a very big
amount of touristic place such as long beaches. Apart from that, getting to the island is
more difficult as coming from other places but other Canary Islands, at least two flightsare needed.
The airport is the first airport in Spain which doesnt have the figure of a controller as
in its tower theres installed the called AFIS Service, so pilot gets the information of the
weather, aero navigation, etc. and decides themself all the procedures they have to
take to operate.

the same time as the one furthest needs to use the closest as taxi way, so the runway
01R-19L is the one which is mainly used and the other one is usually for taxi and only in
the case the main one is at maintenance works, it would be used as a runway.
6.1.3. Gran CanariaGran Canaria is in the centre-east of the archipelago and with a population of around876,000 people, is the capital of one of the two provinces which exist in the Canary
Islands.
Its main economy resource is the tourism and from that, some building industry. In the
rural places, agriculture is a life resource so they cultivate bananas and tomatoes,
which they export to other places (Canary Bananas are very well known outside). From
the agriculture part, its also a small industry for products for it.

6.1.4. La GomeraLa Gomera is in the western part of the archipelago, near El Hierro, La Palma y
Tenerife. As well as some other small islands of this archipelago, its main economic
hubs are the first and the third sectors. In the first sector they cultivate vegetables for
themselves and bananas to export outside the archipelago, they also make chees from

one of the two provinces of the Canary Islands. Its habitants are around 900,000 and
its also the biggest island relating to extension and has the highest mountain in all
Spain; the Teide Volcano.
For being the biggest island, its economy is more complex than the other canary
islands:
A we can see, the third sector is very important and thats because of the tourism, that
also needs the second sector according to the construction. Apart from that, the
second sector also involves a very high bet on renewal energies, which are making this
second sector increase.

This airport has a very long runway, with a category of 4E. Airbus 340 from Iberia
operate constantly at this airport.
In this airport happened the most tragic air accident ever, on the 27th of March of 1977
two jumbo Boeing 747, one from the airline KLM and another from PanAm crashed onits runway. The airport apron had a lot of aircraft because a bomb attack had
happened at Gran Canaria airport, so many planes had to stop in Tenerife until the
situation in Gran Canaria was sorted out. Because of that, the PanAm aircraft was told
to taxi on the runway and leave it at an exit the pilot its supposed didnt see because
of the thick fog. At the same time, the KLM didnt wait for the authorization of the
tower to start taking off and just started. Although at the moment of crashing, the KLM
aircraft was already on the air, it hadnt taken enough altitude to avoid the PanAm
flight. 583 people died.

to be a Spanish airline called Vueling (same owner as Iberia) which used to fly from
this airport to Barcelona and Paris but from October 2011 it has stopped operating
there.
Nowadays they are considering both trying to make it restart or trying to use the

Although in Catalua the first sector has a very small representation, the few things
they make are quite strong and are well known even outside Spain, the most
representative product form this region is cava (kind of champaign), which is sold in
many other countries either European and non-European.
The second sector used to be the most representative sector until about 40 years ago,
nowadays the most important factories are the automotive (Nissan and Seat), the
pharmacy and the chemistry, as well as ship construction factories.
The third sector has become the most important and actually Catalua is the region
which gets the most tourists that visit Spain. Although almost all of them go to visit
Barcelona, as there are low cost airlines which fly to some other parts of Catalua,
some of them use other airports to get there.

people. The sector which gives the least to its economy is the third one, with an
average of around 12% of the Gross Domestic Product. This doesnt mean it doesnt
get tourist as it gets a lot; the reason why its such a small percentage is because its
industry and first sector, as well see later, are very strong and also because the most
tourist are peregrinating to Santiago (typical catholic religious tradition) and they stay
in hostels and we could say they travel very economical.
The second sector is also very strong, especially talking about the automotive industry:
Peugeot and Citren have a factory there which works very well (now a bit worse
because of the crisis). There are also very important naval industries as well as mining
industries (now disappearing).
The first sector is very popular and important because of all the seafood and fishes
which come from Galicia and which they export both inside Spain and outside.
