Filipinos possess different regional traits due to different regional environments ,the lack of contact and communication in previous centuries ,the Spanish imperialist policy of divide and rule and the different economic and social factors which affect them in modern times.

ILOCANOS OF ILOCANDIAThey are the most adventurous ,hardworking ,and frugal of Filipinos.

This is because their barren land is hemmed by the sea on one side and rocky mountains on the other side . They have limited fertile farmlands and a harsh environment.

TAGALOGSThey inhabit Manila and those provinces

around it and the nearby islands of Mindoro and Marinduque.

They feel superior to other Filipinos because they live in a region blessed with rich farms ,navigable rivers and panoramic beauties and because of great contribution in history.

They have Dr. Jose P . Rizal ,the national hero.

The Tagalog began the The Philippine Revolution in 1896.

They have the Malolos Constitution which was written by a Tagalog (Felipe N. Calderon) and the First Phillipine President ,Emilio Aguinaldo is also a Tagalog and also Raha Sulayman .

BICOLANOS OF BICOLANDIAThey are religious ,mild tempered and

musical people.They also possess stoical outlook in life.Their land are has been devastated

frequently by typhoons and various eruption of Mt. Mayon. They endure calamity in calm resignation.

They are fond of spicy food with hot pepper and coconut milk.

BISAYANS

Those Bisayans particularly from Iloilo and Negros Oriental are extravagant ,carefree and jolly.

They love clothes ,jewelry ,and gay parties .

They are lavish spenders and prefer to have good time to hard work.

MUSLIMSThe Muslims in Mindanao and Sulu are

fierce.• They are valiant warriors on both land

and sea.They fought the Spaniards and Americans.They were defeated many times but never conquered.

• The Muslims are among the best pearl diver and seaferers in the world.

• They are adventurous ,proud of their Islamic heritage and seperate cultural identity from the rest of the country.

Out of the 52 million Filipinos , around so called national cultural minorities live in the remote areas particularly in high cordilleras of Luzon , the hills and mountains of Mindanao and on isolated lakes and seashores.

Under the 1986 Constitution ,the Cordilleras of Luzon and the Muslim parts of Mindanao have been declared autonomous regions.

NORTHERN TRIBES

These are the Ifugaos , the Bontocs , the Kankanays, the Ibaloys ,the Tinguians, the Kalingas ,the Gaddangs and the Negritos.

Some of these tribes practice headhunting but is now stopped.

Some tribes still worship nature and their ancestors.

Most tribe practice kaingin culture.The Ifugaos and other tribes in Cordilleras developed extensive terracing systems.

MANGYANSThese are Mindoro tribes which are peace loving ,musical people with no headhunting tradition.

They farm and hunt in the remote areas and have their own writing system dating to pro-Spanish times.

These are the Maranao ,Ilanum ,Tausug and Samal, all Muslims;the Badjao and Yakan(partly Muslim);and the Subanon,Bukidnon, Mansaka,Higanon,Kalagan,Mandaya,Bagobo, Tiruray,Manobo,Blaan,Manubo Blit and Ubo tribes,mostly Pagan tribes.
