TYPICAL LETTER SAMPLEEsmond, North Dakota11 October 1915Dear Staats Anzeiger!I would like to find the address of my brother Joseph Schwab from Mannheim in South Russia; he is a prisoner of war in Austria1. I am sending
Staats-Anzeiger a copy of a letter sent to me by my parents in South Russia. This letter may interest some of the readers. The letter is as follows:
Mannheim, 8 June 1915Dear Children,We find ourselves healthy, but we are very worried about our son Joseph. On 22 July 1914 he went off to fight the war and
was 44 days and nights under fire never having been wounded. On November 19 in Austria he was taken as a prisoner of war. Since then we have only a message from him. All we know is that he is in Austria. We had hoped that he has written you, but from your letter we see that he has not written. His wife and 2 children here are healthy, however very worried. If you are between 19 and 45 years old you are sent to the war. Peter’s son Ludwig is also in the war since February.
It is difficult here and very expensive. A Pud2 flour costs 3 Ruble and meat 20 Kopeken a pound and with that man can be happy when a person can find something. In the whole village we do not have a Pud of fruit and with the harvest being so bad .Winterfruit is not very good however you can hardly find summer fruit.
We have written 3 letters to Johannes already, however he has not answered and it has been a year already. We have cross enough to bear with Joseph and Johannes now also gives us worries. We have cried ourselves almost blind, that he has not written us. We don’t know why he hasn’t answered us.
Mannheimer soldiers that are dead are: The son of Johannes Biegler, Andreas Schneider’s son Balzer and the son of Karl Ludwig Weber. We are certain these 3 are dead, however there could be more, those we know nothing about.
The wounded are too many to count and there are many at home who are crippled. In almost every home you find wounded horses, wagons and dishes everything that is expensive, everything is taken away and money is not enough in coming.
Greetings from your sister and husband Peter Schmidt along with their children. Ludwig is also writing a letter. He would have written long ago, however he did not have the heart, since we not allowed to write or speak German.
Your parents Joseph and Johanna Schwab. That’s as far as the letter goes. It seems, they are all quite sad, since I have read a few in Staats Anzeiger already.
Greeting to everyone that reads this paper.Math Schwab
__________ .We can hardly deter mine, whether the prisoner of war in Aus tria woul d have this paper accessi ble to them. It is thus pure coincidence, if w e deter mine it can. We received $5 for the
paper and will write to them. F or the address lookup we can calculate on nothing, because we do not believe that we can find the address. I f however we do then it will make us happy - Editor, Staats Anzeiger
Translator's Note - 1 Pud is 36 Pounds
