Fizzano Brothers Concrete Products holds the 2015 SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500® Regional Competition

PHILADELPHIA, PA —The 2016 SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500® Regional Competition for Philadelphia, Pa. Northeast Region was held at Fizzano Brothers, in Crum Lynne, Pa. on September 29, 2016. 8 teams of brick masons and tenders vied for a competition spot in the 2015 SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500 National competition held in Las Vegas, Nevada. There, they will compete for over $100,000 in cash and prizes including a new 2016 Ford F-250 4x4 Super Duty XLT truck.

Vince Polverini, a mason with D.M. Sabia, Conshohocken, PA, and his mason tender Rich Small Jr., edged out the rest of the competition to take home first place. His net count of 460 brick got the job done. Not only did first place carry the opportunity to compete in the 2016 SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500 in Las Vegas for Polverini, but it also came with $1000 in cash, Marshall town tool kit with various items, a 5 foot level and various sponsor’s hats and shirts, etc.. The SPEC MIX TOP CRAFTSMAN Award went to, yes you guessed it, Vince Polverini, of D.M. Sabia, Conshohocken, PA. Joe Masters of Bricklayer’s & Allied Craftworkers Local 1 Union finished as runner up taking home $750 in cash and Stihl Drill donated by El Dorado Stone Company. Third place went to mason Bill Lanahan of Lanahan Construction, New London, PA. who received $500 in cash.

We were fortunate to have a great day for the event which allowed us to exceed last year’s attendance. We served up 120 lunches and gave away a door prizes of a 48” Smart HD TV. We also gave the winner of the Head’s and Tales game their own HD TV as well. Our sponsor’s in attendance were El Dorado Stone, Dienner Brick Company, and Stabila Level’s Company. Also, Delaware Valley Masons Institute and Bricklayer’s & Allied Craft Workers Local 1 Union were represented.

Established to showcase the skill and craftsmanship of masonry, the general description of the SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500 is as follows: The contest requires all masons to meet the quality standards of the event. They have 60 minutes to complete their 26 foot 8 inch, double wythe brick wall. The competition has four awards; 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place are based on the highest net brick count meeting the quality standards. The 4th award, and arguably considered the most coveted price, the SPEC MIX TOP CRAFTSMAN is judged the most sellable wall with over 500 brick laid. The walls are closely evaluated by carefully selected masonry officials carrying several years of bricklaying experience. Many of the competitors feel winning the SPEC MIX TOP CRAFTSMAN award is their main goal, and it has the second highest award purse.
