TEAM COORDINATOR# Mary A. Patrick

As we start this New Year, we look back on our memoriesof 2017, we had challenges and we had successes. Weare surviving a colder than normal winter, which isn’t

It Goes Without Saying . . .

Most of this article falls into the “Itgoes without saying”department, but I have to say it

anyway! It’s contest season. All overRegion 2, and the entire SAI world, weare preparing for, hoping for, success! Consider the most basic requirementsof a chorus – before we have enoughsingers to even BE a chorus! – are: 1. A place to rehearse2. Someone who is willing and able tostand out front and sort of cue us along.Oh! That would be a director! If your chorus has ever been on“director search” you already knowthey “don’t grow on trees.” So, it makessense to give your director an “attaboy”from time to time, to work together sothat musical growth as a team is thebest it can be! Very often, progress isthe result not of some huge, amazing“Aha! Moment” (and those are fun!) Rather, it’s the cumulative effect ofmany small things, done well, consistently. Ready? Show Up. “80% of success is just showing up” –Woody Allen. The corollaries ofshowing up are: show up prepared, show up on time. Learn your notes, lyrics, breath plan, dynamic plan, visual plan etc. in atimely way. Practice it on your owntime, so at chorus rehearsal you’reready to contribute to ensemble time. (A quote from a highly successfuldirector/coach: “Oh! You want ME towork harder, so you don’t have to workat all?” She was kidding, to make apoint! Nope. Doesn’t work that way,we’re in this together.)

Be focused, be fully present atrehearsal, in the moment. Let go ofeverything else. Be so into your musicthat you don’t know what time it is! Turn off your phone. Don’t talk about each other. Believe ineach other! Encourage each other! Keep it positive, always. Your Mamawas right, “if you can’t say anythingnice. . .” If it’s not fun, we usually don’t want todo it. Successful choruses havegroomed a culture where we SINGWELL, hug, laugh a lot; where rehearsalnight is a highlight of the week, everyone WANTS to be there! Thatculture is a treasure. From it, we canlearn and grow. Praise in public. Criticize in private. That said, there is a “way” to offersuggestions, corrections. Not ignoringerrors, but treating with kindness. Noone wants to be zinged from the risers. See! You already know this. If you’redoing it all, then your director is alreadya very happy camper. Your chorus is ina good place! Keep on keepin’ on! I wish you all rehearsals that are SOincredible! A quick definition of a goodrehearsal is: Ring LOTS of chords; laugh reallyhard. At least once. And when you have that greatrehearsal that keeps your carpoolbuzzing all the way home. keeps YOU sojazzed, you don’t bother going to bedright away, because you know youwon’t be able to fall asleep — when thathappens, thank your director!

How to Get Local Media out to Your Event

Amedia alert/press release is the appropriate tool whichgives a TV producer or assignment desk editor all theinformation they need to decide on whether the event

you’re holding is of interest to them. Write the mediaalert/press release in five sections: Who, What, When, Whereand Visuals.

• Who: Name your chorus and any key personnel ordignitaries who might be in attendance. Include onlythose who will be available to speak on camera.

• What: What is the reason for the event? Include allmaterial you consider news.

• When: Make certain to include the date and time ofthe event, and how long it will run. Also include theschedules of any on-camera spokespeople, and ifthey will be available prior to the event.

• Where: You need to include an address, directions,and/or a link for Google Maps or MapQuest. Getting areporter or a camera crew to your event depends onhow well you direct them in getting there. If securitypersonnel will be at the venue, make sure they knowthe media might be coming.

• Visuals: Make sure you have something for thecameras to shoot. Have demos, pictures and lots ofpeople around, so they’ll have something interestingand visual.

To get a media coverage of your event, you should followthese instructions to ensure the best level of communicationpossible without harassing the producers and assignmenteditors.

First, send the media alert/press release out two weeks priorto the event. Then, one week prior. Then send it to them threedays before the event. The reason for this is that there may bedifferent desk editors on different days and different shifts, and they delete all their emails frequently to make room fornew alerts.

If your event is interesting enough for them, they’ll show up.If your event is on a Saturday or Sunday, please be advisedthat most TV stations only have a skeleton crew on duty onthe weekends. Your chances for success with weekend eventsare reduced, unless it is a very slow news day.

Use the right tools, make sure the TV producers andassignment desk editors are fully informed, but do it in aprofessional way, and you’ll have a much better shot atgetting media coverage for your event.

MEMBERSHIP COORDINATOR# Melissa Wright

Greetings Region 2!

As many of you may have heard Sweet AdelinesInternational has made some changes to the LifetimeMembership it once offered. In the past, when a

member has reached 50 consecutive years of membershipthey were granted a Lifetime Membership. This meant thatthey no longer had to pay the yearly international dues. However, after nine months of data collection, it has beendecided that with the decrease in membership and as themembership population ages more members are going toreach this level resulting in a significant financial loss.

This is how Paula Davis explains the decision: “It was anagonizing, emotional dilemma that we had to face whilebalancing our duty as leaders to protect and provide for thefinancial well-being and future of the organization.”

So it was decided that the LifetimeMembership would be discontinued andreplace with the newly created “LegacyMembership.” This allows the new 50-yearmembers a 50 percent reduction of the yearlyinternational dues. The 50-year memberceremony on stage at International

Convention will continue to recognize the new 50-yearmembers and a 50-year pin will still be presented.

With the rollout of the new Legacy Membership, memberswill no longer be able to purchase a Lifetime Membership. However, all members who have previously been granted orpurchased a Lifetime Membership are grand-fathered in andwill continue to receive the original Lifetime Membershipbenefits. It was originally stated that as of January 1, 2018members could no longer purchase a Lifetime Membership. This change has since been delayed. Members can purchase aLifetime Membership for $1,600 USD until February 28,2018, at 4:30 p.m. Central Standard Time. You can contact theInternational Membership Department at 1-800-992-7464Ext. 134, or [email protected], if you would like topurchase this membership option.

I know that $1,600 is a ton of money, even more when youfactor in the Canadian exchange. However, if you plan onbeing a part of Sweet Adelines for more than 16 more years,it is worth the investment.

This article is meant to inform you of the changes. If you haveany questions please contact me!

Visiting with Santa at Egelcraft Clubhouse, ourrehearsal site. “A Bella Christmas”

The Bellas at Wine About Winter in GrandHaven, Michigan

Coach Michael Oonkperforms an original

Christmas song at “A BellaChristmas."

PROSPECTIVE A CAPPELLA BELLA CHORUS Muskegon, Michigan ~~ Kathy Niergarth

Greetings from the West Side! The Prospective A Cappella Bella Chorus had a busy fall and winter, andthankfully Mother Nature cooperated with our schedule, waiting to dump FIVE FEET of lake effect snow onthe Muskegon area until after Christmas Eve.

The highlight of our season was our first-ever concert, “ABella Christmas,” on Dec. 10 at Central United MethodistChurch in downtown Muskegon. The church, built in 1929,has impeccable acoustics and was the perfect venue for the150 family, friends and community members in attendance.

The Bellas invited Michael Oonk, guitarist, our coach, andmember of the Holland Windmill Chorus, to sing before theconcert and during our break, and he did not disappoint.Michael debuted three original Christmas songs he composedto the delight of the audience, telling them they had justattended a world premiere. Michael also led the Christmassing-along during the concert.

Continuing our tradition of community service with the GrandHaven Elks Lodge 1200, the Bellas sang at their Veterans Dayluncheon, providing a mix of patriotic and nostalgic music forveterans and their families and friends. We were privileged towitness the Table of Honor Ceremony. This table is set for six,the empty places representing Americans still missing fromeach of the five Services -- Army, Navy, Air Force, MarineCorps, Coast Guard -- and civilians. The ceremony symbolizesthat those still missing are with us in spirit.

The Bellas were invited to sing for Grand Haven’s Light NightNov. 17, which kicks off the holiday shopping season in thedowntown and Centertown areas. We were fortunate to beinside The Bookman on a very rainy night, entertainingcustomers with a wide selection of music.

We helped usher in the Christmas season at EgelcraftClubhouse, singing for children and their parents who werethere to visit with Santa. We had everyone’s attention untilthe Jolly Old Elf made his appearance, but we were able toidentify some future Sweet Adelines who were singing anddancing to our songs. Egelcraft Clubhouse is our rehearsalsite, so we enjoy singing for park members to thank them forthe use of their facility.

The Bellas continued to dodge snowflakes in January to fulfillcommitments the first two weekends. We entertainedemployees and their families at Greenridge Realty’sChristmas party in Muskegon. The following weekend, wesang for the third year at Wine About Winter in Grand Haven. It was a great opportunity to publicize the chorus and to meetwith potential members. We followed with our ChristmasParty at Porto Bello Restaurant, where we celebrated ouraccomplishments as sisters in song. We have one moresingout planned, the national anthem at the MuskegonLumberjacks Hockey game in March.

Now our thoughts have turned to the regional contest inApril. We have started rehearsing a possible new uptune forour package as we continue to refine our existing songs. Wehave moved to Step 2 in our quest to become a charteredchorus. It should be an exciting few months for theProspective A Cappella Bella Chorus.

FENTON LAKES CHORUS Fenton, Michigan ~~ Nancy Liedel

Hello from Fenton Lakes! Well, Christmas time is such a busy time for our chorus. We sing every weekend betweenThanksgiving and Christmas at the River Place Shops in Frankenmuth. The chorus usually takes one day and a chorusquartet will take the other. So, there’s barbershop music all weekend, every weekend! We’re so very blessed to have

seven quartets in our chorus that can cover these weekends! Wait . . . we have seven quartets? Hmm. Regional champions –The Vibe; silver medalists – Hotwire; bronze medalists – Riot Act; Region 17's Sublime; in-house quartets: Toast, Kicks, and,Char Peis. Wow! How great is that? We also sang at the Swartz Creek Performance Arts Center for their annual Christmasconcert. This is one of the highlights of our holiday season and very happy that they ask us back every year.

Of course we are all deep into the contest season. We have started ourcoaching sessions with Jim Arns and Renee Porzel. Can’t get enough ofthese two! But, we’re doing something a little different this year. We’rehaving our very first “chorus day” with guest faculty Karen Sweetersfrom Harmony on the Sound chorus from Connecticut. A full day for justus! We’re very excited to work with Karen.

Next month brings a performance that we’re looking forward to at theOxford Public Library. We did this a few years ago and are thrilled thatthey have asked us back again! If you’d like to come and see us, you canfind the details on their website.

So, until we see you all in April, have a productive and exciting contestseason! We wish you all the best!

“Can you feel the Love tonight?” Wecertainly did! Our “Diamond Harmony”Anniversary Show in October was amemorable evening of nostalgia andreminiscing. It was on June 26, 1957 thatthe Festival Sounds Chorus received itscharter as a chapter of Sweet AdelinesInternational. The venue for our show, AvondaleUnited Church, was beautifullydecorated, and we thank chorusmember Sharon Hunter and husbandLou for doing such a great job! We were once again thrilled to haveChet Greason host our show, whichfeatured the chorus performing a songfrom every decade and staging acomedic skit, while videos and photomontages from the past ignitedmemories from long ago. Special guestsfor the evening were “The Heet” a localmen's quartet. Our own chorusquartets, “H.O.P.E.” and “Four inAccord” also strutted their stuff. Specialrecognition was awarded to Lynn Roppformer chorus director and chartermember. The evening culminated in amass sing where both former directorsand members, as well as all SweetAdelines in the audience, were invitedto join us on stage. Our current director Liana Jenningshanded over the reins to formerdirector Fidell Stewardson, who led thegroup in singing “How We Sang Today,”followed by hugs all around and maybe

even a few happy tears! Following our show, and still on ahigh, we returned to regular choruspractices and dug out our Christmasmusic. If only it was as easy as pressinga reset button! After a few rehearsals, our brains began to recall words andtunes, and we fixed the glitches as weprepared for a number of Christmassingouts, in area nursing/retirementhomes where we always receive awarm welcome. We staged a Flash Mobat the Stratford Farmers Market whereour presence put everyone in theChristmas spirit and even apparentlyincreased the sales that day. From themarket we moved on to the StratfordShopping Mall, where we serenaded theshoppers and even had a visit withSanta. The chorus held its annual Christmasparty at the Festival Inn and we enjoyeda wonderful buffet dinner. We werejoined by former members, spouses, family and friends. Following the meal, with our favourite MC Sue Sutherlandhosting the show, the entertainmentwas provided by some of our owntalented members and friends. Eileen Crowston shared her storyabout life as Mrs. Claus. A triocomposed of Sue Sutherland, formermember Sandy Feick and their friendCarol Rice provided two beautifulChristmas songs. Our resident quartet“H.O.P.E.” sang “I Believe” and “MaryDid You Know?” and former memberLana Coghill strummed

her guitar andled us all in a few carols. We then hadan entertaining visit fromAlvin and theChipmunks. (A.k.a. Sue Sutherland,Della Hamilton, Celina Ball and LianaJennings.) This evening of course is not completewithout our raffle table which was fullof home-made goodies, wine, andvarious items of interest to everyone. This is always a wonderful fund-raiserfor our chorus. Thanks to KarolynMoore for taking charge of the raffletable setup. In the Spirit of the Giving Season, wecollected items to donate to our localwomen's shelter, and we thank LouiseMonteith for making this delivery thefollowing day. Returning to regular practices afterthe Christmas/New Years break, has usnow gearing up for regionalcompetition in April. While we reviewold songs, learn new ones, brainstormcostuming ideas, and plan a Novembershow, we are also dealing with anecessary change in venue to hold ourregular practices. We are thrilled to welcome fourpotential new members to the risers. We hope they will consider joining thelead or the baritone sections. One of ourleads (Celina Ball) has moved up in theworld to become a tenor, and a baritone(Sue Sutherland) was wooed away bythe basses. (Because you know, it's allabout the bass!)

GRAND TRAVERSE SHOW CHORUS Traverse City, Michigan ~~ Mandy Gibson

Why yes, we DID compete for the first time ever at the internationallevel, taking fourth place in Division A Harmony Classic 2017! Whatan adventure that was for us, most likely the high point of our

63-year chorus history! For a year and a half we practiced with singing, choreography, creating a fun package, revising and fine-tuning it all as weraised money for forty of us to travel to Las Vegas. Coaches came to help and support us,

and we steadily improved, the excitement mounted but when we took thestage that Tuesday evening, we were prepared and calm. And then it was over;all the work, worry, and excitement put away for a “next time.” The experiencewas phenomenal, and we are thrilled to have taken part in the internationalcompetition.

We lost our friend and singing sister, Perrie Knorr, shortly after we returnedfrom competition. We were honored to sing as part of her funeral service and toshare “Brave” with her friends and family at the following luncheon, soappropriate since Perrie was the role model for us all to show what courage anddetermination can do. She had been bravely fighting cancer for many years and

even as her health declined, she was determined to take the stage with us in Las Vegas, and she did! Perrie hadbeen a lead in GT Show Chorus for ten years. In her words, “I have sung in various choirs all my life, but trulylove singing with this great group of Sweet Adelines.” Since she was a talented seamstress, she was our go-tofor costume fittings and alterations. As new members were inducted into the Grand Traverse Show Chorus, they were presented with a tote bag, embroidered by Perrie with our cherry logo. We each have these tangiblepieces of her work to cherish but of course that doesn’t make up for the hole left on our risers and in our hearts.

Our sadness continued with the passing of another longtime GT Show Chorus member, Cam Lacy, who alsosuccumbed to a long-term illness. Cam joined our chorus in

2002, remaining a member at large for the last couple of years. Cam will alsobe remembered as the vivacious tenor in Sashay Quartet for many years.

We kicked off our Christmas singing season by leading an evening parade infront of 4,000 people who lined the street to welcome Santa and the lightingof the community Christmas tree in downtown Traverse City. It was anelectric light parade so in addition to our usual Sweet Adelines bling, wewere each adorned with our own lights – Christmas bulb necklaces, flashingpins and all kinds of fun blinking hats. We also sang the following week upand down the streets, in and out of the stores for Downtown Traverse City’sLadies Night. This is such a fun tradition for us, as is singing at some of the area assisted living andnursing homes. Our final Big Sing of the season is sharing the stage at Kirkbride Hall with our local barbershop group, theCherry Capital Men’s Chorus. This festive event for friends and families is a great opportunity to showcase both choruses andthe magic of four-part a cappella.

You will notice a different name as the contributor of our news to “Border Lights.” Evelyn Harper retired fromthe chorus in October after 20 years of fun and singing baritone harmony with OUR chorus and several moreyears before that with South Oakland County. A prolific writer, Evelyn has published 10 novels so far andcontinues to pursue that passion. At her last rehearsal with us, a week after our return from Vegas, from herrequest we sang the “Cups Song,” you know – “you’re gonna miss me when I’m gone, when I’m gone” as shewalked out the door. And of course, we do.

And now to a new year! We have a few coaching sessions already lined up and are looking forward to continuing to learn, shareand have fun in 2018. Of course, we are now rehearsing some new songs and preparing for regional in April. It will be great tosee you all in Dearborn.

Dream On!

HEART OF ESSEX Maidstone, Ontario ~~ Fran Ferguson and Rose Tako

Heart of Essex had a busy but eventfulfall and early winter. In lateNovember, we presented our winter

show “Christmas Dreams” at the GiovanniCaboto Club. This year we decided to giftour profits to the Alzheimer’s Society ofWindsor. What a worthy cause! Our guests were treated to entertainmentby the Heart of Essex Chorus, our two newquartets – you’ll recognize the faces – andthe brand new quartet “Dream On” fromMichigan. This was their premierperformance and they received resoundingapplause from our audience. Home-baked“goodies from the heart” were enjoyed byall, and then came the raffle draw. Manyhappy people claimed their gifts. At theconclusion of the show, a representativefrom the Alzheimer’s Society gave us aheartfelt thanks for our contribution. In early December, we kept busy! Firstcame the cultural fair in Kingsville wherewe entertained a la barbershop on a primestreet corner. This was followed by aconcert at the Kingsville Community Centerwhere we spread Christmas cheer to theOver 50s Club. The next day, we performedfor the Glenwood Church Seniors Group andfollowed that with a Christmas serenade atthe Pickle Ball Club Banquet — yes Dorothy, there is such a thing as Pickle Ball! Our ownJoyce C directed when our director Loiscould not be there! Kudos to Joyce and allthe ladies who were able to attend. After our performance in Kingsville, wehad a special request to visit the home of adear friend of one of our members who wasbedridden and gravely ill. We gatheredaround her bed and sang the familiar carolsto her. She was overwhelmed withhappiness. When we sang “It Had to beYou,” she joined in. What a thrill it was toshare the gift of harmony with Minnie. That’s what Christmas is all about! Afootnote: Minnie is up and well and walkingaround — maybe a Christmas miracle! We were invited to perform in theSunparlour Mens’ Barbershop Chorusannual Christmas Show. What an honour itwas to sing for our Brothers in Harmony!“Love that Barbershop Style.” In the twinkling of an eye, it was time forour Christmas party hosted by ourWonderful Women of Windsor hospitalitygroup. Unfortunately, it began to snow – yesthe BIG SNOW – the night before so we hadto postpone it until the weather was better. We really missed celebrating Christmaswith our sisters, so, in January, firstrehearsal back, we had a “Belated Christmas- Happy New Year Party.” Lucky us; we getto celebrate Christmas together nextDecember too!

We were treated to an old fashionedChristmas turkey dinner with all thetrimmings lovingly prepared for us by themanager of our rehearsal venue, Therese. We really enjoyed it. Just when you thoughtyou couldn’t eat another bite of turkey, there it was! The after-dinnerentertainment highlighted the WWW intheir performance of the 12 Days ofCanadian Christmas. It started off with amoose in a maple tree and ended up with12 skiers shushing. Hee Hee! You had to bethere! One of our quartets entertained forus with a song written especially for theevent by Joyce C. Then HOE sang the nightaway! A nice way to return to rehearsals. This year’s Christmas Charity was “Sarah’sSocks Warm the Heart.” For the past 12years, Sarah Lewis has been collectingwarm socks, mittens, jackets, hats, sleepingbags, etc. for the homeless people inWindsor. This is the last year she will bedoing this as she is going off to Universitythis fall. She plans to come and thank us inperson at a later date.

Our “From the HeartAward” was presented toLorna F in October. Lornareceived her 60-year pin atfall regional last year. Shepassed it on to Amanda M inDecember. January’srecipient was Robbie L. Congrats ladies for yourdedication to the chorus!

Last fall we had a pleasant surprise whenDirector Lois announced that she had anassistant director for us — ourchoreographer Amanda Mundy! What abeautiful and energetic Sweet Ad she is. Welove to watch her beaming face and followher graceful hands as she directs us.Congratulations Amanda! We are veryproud of you! We have been in contest mode sinceJanuary and are working toward our“report card” at regional convention 2018in Dearborn. Coach Lynne Peirce has beenworking with us enthusiastically and wewill enjoy her company at our Januaryretreat at the end of the month. DirectorLois is so patient and supportive with ustoo. What a great group we have! That’s about it from our little corner ofEssex County. See you at the regionalconvention!

Fran and Rose areavid Windsor ExpressBasketball fans andwear light-up hats foreach game. They arecalled “the Sparkle Sisters.” Often themanager of the franchise comes along andmodels our hats to the delight of Windsorfans!

LOCK CITIES CHORUS Sault Ste.Marie Michigan and Ontario ~~Trudy Pettenuzzo

Here it is, a new year! Farewell to 2017 andwelcome to 2018! While 2017 was a busyyear for the lovely ladies of the Lock Cities

Chorus, we have a lot on our plate for 2018. Wejust finished a hectic Christmas season, with eight singoutsaround Sault Michigan and Sault Canada, at seniors facilitiesand the local mall. In October, we had a very successfulspaghetti supper to raise money for the chorus. We servedand sang for a group of almost 100 people (see Aldo theItalian Waiter). Lots of compliments on the food, and thesinging! Now we are looking forward to Valentine’s Day. We arepairing with the bell choir from Central Methodist Church foran afternoon of “Ringing, Singing and Chocolate” on 11February. We dug back through our repertoire for love songs .. . not a problem to find enough for the show! We are quiteexcited about performing with the bell choir once again, andthen after the show, going downstairs for chocolate goodies, made by the ladies of the church. Also on the horizon is a show in the fall. Centering around‘50s and ‘60s music, we are working on a Beatles medley, aboyfriend medley and a Beach Boys medley, and looking forpoodle skirts, bobby socks and saddle shoes! Sounding like itwill be a lot of fun. Our board of directors has been throwing around someideas on attracting new members. We are arranging for a“Bring a Friend” evening which sounds very intriguing. Hopefully, this will result in a few ladies realizing what awonderful organization Sweet Adelines is (not to mention alot of fun!) While we will not be going to contest this year, we wish allthose competing choruses, good luck.

LONDON CHORUS London, Ontario~~ Jo Kulik

The time period from fall regional until theend of the year is always busy, but this yearheld some special events that we

thoroughly enjoyed and will add to LondonChorus’s memory album. It began one beautiful Octoberafternoon when many of us arrived in Chatham to celebratethe 100th birthday of one of our favourite members, AgnesMale. For many years, Agnes made the weekly one-hourjourney from Chatham to London where she unfailingly stoodfor three hours on the risers singing out in her awesome bassvoice, with a smile on her face, never complaining. Agnesstopped that weekly jaunt when her doctor thought that twohours travel on winter roads might be a bit much, so shebecame an associate member. We miss her every week, butnever miss her at a chorus event, because she rarely missesone. A month before Christmas we held our annual Christmasshow and this year had a very special person come to join us Our amazing, Joyce Walter, who had a very serious accidentearly in 2017, came to help collect tickets at the door. Joycesurprised us with a song which she prepared for us and sangon stage. We continue to support Joyce and Jim in theirhealing journey and look forward to her return to the chorus. This amazing lady has given her wheelchair a very specialname. She calls it “TEMPORARY!” Now that is positivethinking. In December we sang for over 1,000 women at CentennialHall and we were the entertainment for the Hunt Club annualChristmas party. Also in December we divided our chorus inhalf and while one group sang at a local mall, the other wentto a nursing home and then we reconvened at our rehearsalhall to share the season as a chorus. We finished the eveningwith our annual candlelight carol sing. We continue to work on our new contest songs as weprepare for Dearborn in April and St Louis in October.

NORTHERN BLEND CHORUS Prescott, Michigan ~~ Kay Gaines

Happy New Year from NORTHERN BLEND. After thecrazy pace during the last months of 2017, we areenjoying settling into a slower routine as we prepare

for contest 2018.

Fall seemed a good time to brush up on our fund-raising skillsby enjoying a weekend in September at the RenaissanceFestival in Holly in addition to hosting a tip night at G’s inWest Branch and a poker room weekend in Oscoda. Theannual Kiwanis show in November was great fun. We donnedour vintage and patriotic garb to help with the show’s theme:Salute to America.

Then came December with performances in West Branch andStandish at the Arenac Choraleers concerts, in Oscoda at theShoreline Players Variety Show, in Whittemore at the UnitedMethodist Church, and in Gladwin as guest performers at theGladwin Community Choir concert. Bringing holiday cheer in

the form of song is something we look forward to and wewere warmly welcomed by the residents of the Hale CreekSenior Living Center as well as the residents at The Brook inWest Branch during the holiday season.

After learning that there were many children in our areawhose families were struggling to provide Christmas for theirchildren, the NBC board of directors agreed to match anyamount of money collected by our members at our Christmasparty. Members took the information to heart and when allwas counted, we were able to provide clothing including newcoats, hats, gloves and boots well as toys and games for 14children for Christmas. Great job NBC.

We look forward to seeing all our Region 2 members atcompetition in April and especially send good wishes to thoseamong us who may be struggling with health issues.

SHORELINE SOUND CHORUS Royal Oak, Michigan ~~ Mary Linda Gauche

More, and alwayswelcome, coachingcame from Renee

Porzel and then Jim Arns inSeptember. They helped us

hone our entertainment package for fallregional at the Doubletree and perfect ourcontest presentation while in Las Vegas.Excitement built, and we couldn’t wait toshow our region and the powers that be outwest! Soon it was International competitiontime in Las Vegas for The Vibe, Fusion,Grand Traverse Show Chorus and ShorelineSound Chorus. Some folks arrived early forside trips to the Grand Canyon, HooverDam, and other points of interest, whileothers opted to stay longer aftercompetition for side trips (helicopter rideover Grand Canyon!) Shoreline is so veryproud of both Fusion and The Vibe, as wellas Grand Traverse Show Chorus, with theirperformances, and we in our chorus lovedour time on that stage as well. We worked hard and hoped for a higherplacement but were thankful and blessed tohave had the opportunity to take theInternational stage! As we sat through thequartet and the chorus finals, we were inawe of all participants and offer heartfeltcongratulations to Queens of Harmony –

Lustre and 2018 chorus champions NorthMetro. On the down side, a few of ourchorus members came home with a nastyflu that knocked them for a loop (Janet Gray,Karen Raab and Janie Fritz, notably).

We shifted gearsimmediately uponreturn to prepare forour Autumn Tea at theElks Club in Royal Oak. At our last rehearsalbefore the tea, wegladly welcomed two,new YOUNG members– Christy Whittemore(tenor) and Sonnet

Woolf (lead.) What a pleasure to have youjoin our loving chorus! Our first (annual?) Tea went swimmingly. All the tables were lovely; clearly no“winner” to be found, just all gorgeous.Attendees got great food (much of whichwas concocted and prepared in JacquieKobe’s kitchen during a 14-hour stint), andthey were treated to a fine musical show aswell. Many thanks to the croissantpreparation team as well as everyone whogave their all with foods, decorations andhostessing. I think I smell SUCCESS!

It is so extremely difficult to put into wordshow we feel with the loss of our beloved Janet

Gray. She shall remain in our hearts andminds always, and we will continue to miss

her delightful, spunky personality on and onand always. Many of us attended her

memorial service in Grosse Pointe WoodsDecember 30. God be with you my forever

friend; until we meet again, Peanut.

Before we knew it, the Christmas seasonwas upon us, and our Christmas party atFarina’s in Berkley brought the warmth andjoy of the season, making us forget thebitter cold outside! Riot Act minus NancyLiedel (with Cathie McClary filling in) aswell as a pickup quartet (Linda, Patty,Donna and Martha) entertained us. A fewfun games, some singing, and the “UglyChristmas Sweater” contest rounded out theevening. A huge thank you to all our guestswho joined the party! What better way to start the New Yearthan an extended coaching session with thebeloved Renee Porzel! She exudes ideas, energy and moves on the spot and kept usimprovising and creating with her. We areblessed!

SONG OF THE LAKES CHORUS Davison, Michigan ~~ Nancy Sommerville

Catching up with Song of the Lakes Chorus

Avery Happy New Year to all our sisters in song! Meanwhile, what happened to LAST year?

Well, the second weekend in September always finds SotL members working at theMichigan Renaissance festival! It’s hard work for two days but the payoff is wellworth the effort! We couldn’t make it happen without additional help from chorusmembers from the “Blends,” – Motor City and Northern! Many thanks to all!

Late summer was the perfect time to enjoy the Polish Festival where we sang for awonderful, attentive audience at a lovely outdoor setting! We were also pleased tobe on hand at the inaugural First Frost Arts and Fine Crafts Show in DowntownFlint. Another great venue, The Flint Institute of Arts, provided great exposure aswe ended up on the evening news!

Many of our members attended the fall regional. Three of them, Shirley Lyon,Phyllis Acre and Joanne Ferguson, proudly received their regional 25 years ofmembership pin. In fact, a third of our chorus are “seasoned” members with morethan 25 years! That’s a lot to celebrate!

We had a great weekend of coaching in October with Steve Scott, Music EducationSpecialist for the Barbershop Harmony Society.

Thanks to a brainstorm from our director, Maria Christian, we recorded our firstMusical Christmas Greeting Cards, which were posted on Facebook. Look for moreof those in the near future!

Winner, Winner! Chicken Dinner! was our January fundraiser! Such fun, great food, such a success!

It’s a good thing that during this frozen time of the year, we heat things up withcoaching, choreo and contest preparations! We started our year off right with theinimitable Cindy Hansen, who presented us with a new approach to choreo that wethink will translate well on stage! Nice to have that taken care of in January!February coaching will bring LeAnn Hazlett as our retreat faculty in early February. We are so lucky to have this talented lady in our own region!

And we can’t wait for March 17 when we will present our “Lucky Day” show at theCenter for the Arts of Greater Lapeer. AND don’t forget to make your reservations for our 8th Annual Garden Tea. Always heldon the Saturday before Mother’s Day, this year it will be on May 12. This event is always sold out so reserve your tickets early!

Wishing you all “hot” rehearsals and good health from Song of the Lakes Chorus. We are Sweet Adelines!
