PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Linda
BOOK REVIEW BREAKFAST
On January 5, 2015, Tiffanie
McCurdy, a staff member of
the Vero Beach Book Center,
will review “”There Will Be
Lies” by Nick Lane. Tiffany
has lived most of her life in
Paradise, otherwise known as
Vero Beach, FL. She has worked at The Vero
Beach Book Center for 8 years, where she spe-
cializes in young adult literature and is a children's
book buyer for the bookstore. Her review of “There
Will Be Lies” will provide insight into the kind of
literature that is appealing to the youth culture.
Maybe we can get some insight into the minds of
our grandchildren.
The book review breakfast will take place at the
Richardson Center on the Mueller Campus of In-
dian River State College, 6155 College Lane, Vero
Beach FL. Continental breakfast on the veranda at
9:30 a.m. will be followed by the book review in
the auditorium at 10:00 a.m. This event is free
and open to the public. You are encouraged to
invite a friend.
Please plan to come to the Holiday Tea
on December 7, 2014 at 3pm. The tea
will take place at the Indian River
Shores Community Center located at
6001 N Highway 1. Entertainment will
be by members of the Charter High
School Chorale. Refreshments will be
provided by members of the Vero Beach
AAUW Board. We look to toasting the
2014 Holiday Season. Please feel free
to bring guests.
PRESIDENT’S LETTER
My best wishes to all for a Happy Holiday Season!
Our events thus far have been a success both from the standpoint of participation and enlightening content. At the luncheon at Pointe West, Dr. Adams gave a timely update on the Common Core Curriculum and the challenges to the Indian River School District in meeting goals and preparing students for success especially in the face of the large number of our youth living in poverty.
The Book Breakfasts are well attended and the speakers have offered us thorough, thought-provoking reviews. On January 5, Tiffanie McCurdy will provide insight into the kind of literature that is appealing to the youth culture.
In January, we have two wonderful events planned. We will host members of regional branches at Vero Beach Country Club on January 10 at 11 am and get updates on their activities. As a special treat, after lunch, Stein Mart is sponsoring a Fashion Show featuring Vero Beach Branch models. What fun! Please send in your registra-tion forms as soon as possible – the form can be found on page 5 of this newsletter.
The second exciting event is a one-woman play starring Elaine Bromka, a Emmy award winner actress portraying Lady Bird Johnson, Pat Nixon, & Betty. The fundraiser play will be performed at the Emerson Center on January 24, 2015 at 7 pm. Tickets can be obtained from the Emerson Center in person, by phone and online. The information is provided on page 6 of the Hotline.
Please save the date and register early for our annual scholarship fundraiser, the Book Author Luncheon at Bent Pine Country Club on February 21, 2015. The featured author is bestselling author Mary Alice Monroe. The reservation form is on page 7 of this newsletter.
Please visit our website: VeroBeach-fl.aauw.net for additional up-to-date information on all our activities, interest groups and events.
I hope to see you all at the Holiday Tea on
December 7!
