WWOA - SE Region - February 12th, 2015 - Oconomowoc Meeting
The February meeting was hosted by the City of Oconomowoc with a plant tour hosted by the
Delafield-Hartland Water Pollution Control Facility. The meeting was located at the Oconomowoc
Community Center located on beautiful Lac La Belle. The day opened with Tom Steinbach,
Oconomowoc Wastewater Utility operations manager, greeting everyone and welcoming the members
to the City.
Tom Mulcahy from Mulcahy Shaw led off the morning’s presentations with a talk on SorbX
Phosphorous Treatment, which detailed some of the trial projects they have done with the newer and
the results thus far.
Next on the agenda was Abigail Cantor from WRF who presented on a Water System
Polyphosphates Optimization Study. She discussed the details of the study and the conclusions from the
data that was collected.
After a short break with the vendors, Mike Trombly from Utility Service Group presented on Ice
Pigging. The presentation showed operators a newer technology for cleaning water mains and sewer
pressure pipes while avoiding other more intrusive techniques.
The business meeting was then called to order by Bob Biedrzycki followed by an introduction of
the SE Region officers and the treasurer’s report. Tom Steinbach and Scott Luczak were recongnized
and presented plaques for their planning and coordination work for the meeting. Dean Falkner was also
recognized and presented a plaque for his prior service as SE Region Chair in 2014. The DNR update
advised members on current events within the DNR. Bob Biedrzycki then announced that the SE Region
is still in need of Operator of the Year nominations and stressed how important it is to consider those
who go above and beyond in the industry. He also encouraged members to consider entering a team in
this year’s Operator’s Competition, and then concluded the business meeting.
After a delicious lunch, members drew their attention to Jim Kleinschmidt from Baxter &
Woodman. Jim informed the attendees about the Dangers of Toxic Compounds in Sewers and how they
affect day to day operations of a collection system and treatment facility.
After a brief introduction and directions, members were directed to the plant tour at the
Delafield-Hartland Water Pollution Control Facility. The SE Region’s next meeting, in May will be hosted
by the City of Waterford and the Western Racine County WWTP.

WWOA - SE Region Meeting May 7th, 2015 - Waterford Meeting
The May meeting was co-hosted by the City of Waterford and the Western Racine County Sewerage
District (WRCSD) and held at Bruno’s Restaurant in the River City Lanes Bowling Center. The day opened with Jim
Bergles, City of Waterford Assistant Public Works Director, greeting everyone and welcoming the members to the
City.
Troy Larson from Strand Associates led off the morning’s presentations with a talk on Emphasizing the
Fundamentals of Biological Phosphorous Removal Aids in Process Optimization, which detailed some process
changes and optimization done at the WRCSD WWTP to help comply with new phosphorous removal
requirements.
Next on the agenda was Jim Kleinschmidt from Baxter & Woodman who presented on the Fox River
Operators Group - What We Have Learned since 2014. He discussed the results thus far on a study being done by
various wastewater entities that discharge to the Fox River.
After a short break with the vendors, Jim Smith from Applied Technologies gave a presentation on
Meeting Strict Phosphorous Limits for a new WWTP. He educated the members on some of the things being done
in new WWTP design & construction to comply with for and future phosphorous limits.
The business meeting was then called to order by Bob Biedrzycki followed by an introduction of the SE
Region officers and the treasurer’s report. Jim Bergles and Jeff Braatz were recongnized and presented plaques for
their excellent planning and coordination work for the meeting. Dean Falkner was also recognized and presented a

concluded the business meeting.
After a delicious lunch of chicken, ham, potatoes, and other side dishes, members drew their attention to
Diane Thoune from Clark Dietz. Diane gave a detailed presentation on the Municipal Perspective of Private
Property I&I Prevention. She discussed the many challenges that municipalities have when dealing with private
property sewer issues and the various methods that have been considered to reduce ongoing I&I issues on those
properties.
Troy Larson from Stand Associates and Jeff Braatz from WRCSD then gave a brief presentation and
overview of the WRCSD wastewater treatment plant’s history, upgrades, capacity, operation, and unique flow
characteristics due to an above average contribution by waste haulers.
After the introduction, members were directed to plant tours at both the WRCSD wastewater treatment
plant and the City of Waterford’s well house. The tour of the well house included a live demonstration by Fluke of
motor testing tool technology and an overview of the City’s iron removal system. The SE Region’s next meeting
and annual pig roast will be in August, hosted by the City of Cedarburg WWTP.

WWOA - SE Region - August 13th, 2015 - Cedarburg Meeting
The August meeting & annual pig roast were hosted by the City of Cedarburg with a plant tour
of the Cedarburg WWTP.. The meeting was located at the Columbia St. Mary’s Center located on the
Ozaukee County Fair Grounds. The day opened with Eric Hackert, Cedarburg Wastewater operations
manager, greeting everyone and welcoming the members to the City.
Mike Furst from Energenecs led off the morning’s presentations with a talk on Innovative Mixing
Systems, which detailed the benefits of their mixers including energy savings and ease of installation and
maintenance.
Next on the agenda were Art Harrington and Joseph Nicks from Godfrey & Kahn. They
collectively led a discussion on the proper methods and channels to follow for Challenging Effluent
Limits in a WPDES Permit.
Kathy Bates from MATC then informed the operators about the Environmental Health and water
Quality Technology Program they have available. The program is a great way to get young operators or
people with little experience in the industry educated and ready to pursue a water industry career.
After a short break with the vendors, Jeff Hellenbrand of Hellenbrand, Inc. presented his
findings from a pilot project they recently completed in the Madison area. The project studied the
impact of tuning-up and replacing older water softeners with more efficient models on the municipal
wastewater stream.
The business meeting was then called to order by Bob Biedrzycki followed by an introduction of
the SE Region officers and the treasurer’s report. Eric Hackert was recongnized and presented a plaque
for his majority contribution on the planning and coordination of the meeting. The DNR update was
followed by the WWOA State Representative report. The election for three board positions was then
held to fill the spots for next year. Ben Huffman from the South Milwaukee WWTP was nominated and
unopposed for Vice-Chair. Paul Gagas and Jeff Downs were both nominated and unopposed for the
Treasurer and Secretary positions, respectively. Bob Biedrzycki then announced that the SE Region is
still in need of an Operator Competition Team, and then concluded the business meeting.
After a delicious “pig roast” lunch, members drew their attention to Jeff Miller from JMB
Associates. Jeff went into detail about the installation and setup of VFD systems as an upgrade to
existing systems.
Presentations were concluded with Chris Seitz from Focus on Energy discussing the various
options available for Funding for Energy Savings, showing operators how they can get financial
assistance to perform upgrades and changes to make their operations more energy efficient.
After a brief introduction and directions by Eric Hackert, members were directed to the plant
tour at the Cedarburg wastewater Treatment Plant. The SE Region’s next meeting, in Februrary will be
at a site yet to be determined.
