2017 REGION 9 TEACHERS OF THE YEAR

RHONDA BIRDWELL, ELEMENTARY TEACHER OF THE YEAR

JOHN HARDIN ELEMENTARY, BURKBURNETT ISD

During her 19 years in education, Rhonda Birdwell has been a kindergarten teacher at John Hardin Elementary for 16 years, and has served as a mentor to other kindergarten teachers, both officially and unofficially.

Ms. Birdwell states, “Teaching is my life…I love it!” She goes on to say, “…I have learned that one thing holds true for all grades…They (students) want teachers to make a connection with them and understand who they are while building on their strengths and making learning fun so areas that a student might find challenging will be engaging.”

Ms. Birdwell is also involved in teaching at her church, has helped with a Burkburnett Girl Scout troop, and has helped the Boys and Girls Club cheer group.

GARY CUNNINGHAM, SECONDARY TEACHER OF THE YEAR

CARRIGAN CAREER CENTER, WICHITA FALLS ISD

Gary Cunningham has 26 years of teaching experience, 23 of those with Wichita Falls ISD. He currently serves as a Welding Instructor at the Carrigan Career Center. Mr. Cunningham remarks, “The spark of accomplishment and confidence that lights up a student in my classroom is the fuel that keeps me loving to come to work each and every day.” He further comments, “I see myself as a seed planter. I may never see the full garden or how the plants flourish, but I know I started the chain by planting those seeds of knowledge and skill.”

Mr. Cunningham has also taught continuing education welding classes for parents and community members, and uses those skills in projects for his church and civic organizations such as Faith Mission, Habitat for Humanity, and the ARC Foundation among others.

2016 REGION 9 SUPERINTENDENT OF THE YEAR

JEFF MCCLURE, HENRIETTA ISD

The Henrietta ISD Board submitted their nomination of Mr. McClure for Region 9 Superintendent of the Year for his exemplary and visionary leadership toward improving student performance in their schools. Mr. McClure began a program in the district a few years ago to encourage students to be their best in the areas of attendance, behavior and academics. The program, “Exemplary in All Endeavors”, allows the administrators of each campus the freedom to “make it their own” in creating incentives to reward students for excelling in the three targeted areas. As a result, HISD campuses have seen increased academic performance and standardized test scores continually improve. The Board remarked, “Mr. McClure has a personality that creates enthusiasm and energy in the school and community… He is gifted in directing key decision makers to consider the points of view of all constituent groups, internally and externally.” Mr. McClure has 24 years of administrative experience and has served as Superintendent at Henrietta ISD for 12 years.

TYLOR CHAPLIN, BURKBURNETT ISD

Mr. Chaplin comes to Burkburnett from Falls City ISD where he was serving as superintendent. He has been in education for 22 years. He received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Education Administration from Tarleton State University. He served as a teacher, coach and administrator in Stephenville ISD and administrator in Huckabay ISD. Mr. Chaplin enjoys the outdoors. He and his wife Anita have two daughters.

PAM NORWOOD, CROWELL ISD

Mrs. Norwood has most recently served for 9 years as the Director of Special Programs, Curriculum and Professional Development for Chapel Hill ISD in Mount Pleasant, Texas. She is beginning her 21st year in education and has served as principal, teacher and coach at schools in Clarksville ISD and Prairiland ISD. She and her husband Ricky will celebrate their 30th anniversary this fall. They have a daughter who teaches at North Lamar ISD who has given them two beautiful granddaughters, and a daughter who has just graduated high school and will begin the Occupational Therapy Assistant program at Panola College in Carthage, TX.

DWAIN MILAM, JACKSBORO ISD

Mr. Milam comes to Region 9 from Collinsville ISD, where he served as superintendent for six years. He has been in education for 30 years serving at Petersburg ISD, Floydada ISD, Petrolia ISD and Motley County ISD. He received his bachelor degree from Austin College and his master from Lubbock Christian University. He and his wife Christi have two daughters who are students at Jacksboro High School. The whole family are excited to be Jacksboro Tigers!

KEN BAUGH, THROCKMORTON ISD

Mr. Baugh has now been with Throckmorton ISD for a year. He has been in education for 20 years, first as a teacher and administrator for Hawley ISD, then as principal and superintendent at Gustine ISD before coming to Throckmorton. He received a Bachelor of Business Administration from West Texas State University A & M, an alternative teaching certificate through Region 14, and Master of Education and superintendency degrees from Abilene Christian University. He has been married for 40 years to Pam, who has recently retired from school nursing. They have two children and two grandchildren, whom they love spending time with. They also enjoy traveling.

CARLA HENNESSEY, MONTAGUE ISD

Mrs. Hennessey has been in education for 19 years. She served at Forestburg ISD for 12 years as a classroom teacher, junior high and varsity coach, and technology director. She has served the past 7 years as the principal at Montague ISD. Mrs. Hennessey earned both her Bachelor of Arts degree in English, as well as her Master of Educational Administration at Texas Womans University. She completed her superintendent coursework from the University of Texas at Tyler. Carla and her husband Tim are the proud parents of 4 children ranging in ages from 4 to 19. Together as a family they enjoy camping and ATV adventures.
