WHAT IS ALTERNATIVE CERTIFICATION
FOR TEACHERS?
A Post-Baccalaureate certification program that utilizes an
alternative route from the more traditional university
experience to achieve certification.
It is the same certificate, not an alternative certificate.
Typically alternative certification …
-Includes preparation before internship.
-Is a field-based preparation model.

REGION 5 TCP BASIC SKILLS REQUIREMENTS
ACT – Composite score from a single sitting must equal at
least 23 with a minimum of 19 per section
SAT- Composite score of 1070 with a minimum of 500 per
section (verbal and quantitative)
GRE- Score of 500 or higher on both the verbal and
quantitative sections

TRAINING
TEA requires interns to complete 300 hours of training
plus internship in the classroom in order to earn their
standard teaching certificate.
Some training elements are common to all areas and
some are unique to an individual certificate.
Participant will be placed on inactive status if he/she is
unable to keep up with financial responsibilities,
attendance at trainings, or both. The participant is
notified in writing if this becomes necessary.
*NOTE: Only TCP Interns are allowed to attend trainings.
*Occasionally individuals not enrolled in the TCP are allowed to
attend trainings for a fee.

Edison Plaza 4th or 5th floor

Across from Crockett St.)
Parking is allowed in the Entergy parking
lot located beside the building after 4 pm.
Parking before 4 pm is allowed across
the street from the Entergy reserved
parking lot.
TWO WAYS TO EARN A TEACHING
CERTIFICATE
ROUTE 1 - INTERNSHIP
Internship means teaching one calendar year as the teacher of record.
Salary and benefits based on district teacher salary schedule
All roles and responsibilities of a classroom teacher
Evaluated by the district measure of success as well as evaluation by the
program
Completion of Sustained Professional Development (2 -3 times per month)
Satisfying all requirements, including fees paid in full
The support team consists of:
A Mentor Teacher
An ESC Supervisor
A Supervising Administrator
ROUTE 2 – CLINICAL TEACHING
Unpaid, full time assignment for 14 weeks conducted in the classroom of a cooperating teacher who has held certification in the corresponding certification area for at least 3 years
All responsibilities of a classroom teacher while supervised by cooperating teacher
Evaluated by district measure of success as well as evaluation by the program
Completion of Sustained Professional Development (2 -3 times per month)
Satisfying all requirements, including fees paid in full
The support team consists of:
A Cooperating/Mentor Teacher
An ESC Supervisor
A Supervising Administrator
EARNING A STANDARD TEACHING
CERTIFICATE
In order to complete the program and be recommended for standard
certification, an individual must:
Must pass all required state exams for certification
Pay all applicable fees
Receive recommendation for certification from the TCP Director,
Principal, Field Observer, and Mentoring Teacher
Complete all required paperwork and observations for the program
Complete all state required documentation for certification
WHAT IS THE COST?Application fee $80 (non-refundable)
Program Fees: 3 installments of $650 starting at orientation, then every 45 days after that.
Internship fee: $3,000
TOTAL: $4,950.00 (without application fee)
*For applicants who successfully obtain employment for the school year, the internship fee may be payroll deducted or paid by the intern on a prorated monthly basis during the internship year.
*If the internship is in any other Region, the internship fee is $4,500, not $3,000.
*If the intern does not successfully complete all requirements within the year due to no fault of the district or TCP, the intern must pay an extra $1500 each year up to a maximum of three years on the probationary certificate.

Online content course begins – September, 2014
Begin 30 hours field observations– must be completed prior to working as a full-time teacher

Mini Pedagogy Session – evenings in April and May
Special Education Training Dates – June 2, 4, 9, 11, 17, 18 (4 – 8 pm)
Summer Institute dates - July 13-24 – 8 am to 5 pm (M – F)
