2013 FOD Day by Jamie R. Smith, Firefighter, Regina Airport Authority

What do you call debris, (tools, equipment, aircraft parts, ice chunks, corrosive salt sand, earth, stones, etc.), laying

about an aircraft operating surfaces that may be ingested into an aircraft engine or otherwise damage an aircraft? If you answered Foreign Object Debris (FOD), you are correct. FOD at airports can cause damage that costs airlines, airports, and airport tenants millions of dollars a year. According to the Boeing Company, foreign objects on runways have cost the aerospace industry an estimated US$4billion/year in aircraft repairs, flight delays and airport maintenance.

On May 23, 2013, Regina International Airport held its annual FOD day. For those who participated, it was a great way to clean up the airfield, get some fresh air, do some socializing and let’s not forget the BBQ at the Fire Hall. More significantly bring awareness of the importance of identifying, recovering and preventing FOD. Thank you to all who attended and we will see you next year.

What is WHMIS?WHMIS is a short form for Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System. It is a comprehensive plan for providing information on the safe use of hazardous materials used in Canadian workplaces. Information is provided by means of product labels, material safety data sheets (MSDS) and worker education programs.

What are the main parts of WHMISThe main components of WHMIS are hazard identification and product classification, labeling, material safety data sheets, and worker training and education.

Why was WHMIS created? It was created in response to the Canadian workers’ right to know about the safety and health hazards that may be associated with the materials or chemicals they use at work. Exposure to hazardous materials can cause or contribute to many serious health effects such as effects on the nervous system, kidney or lung damage, sterility, cancer, burns and rashes. Some hazardous materials are safety hazards and can cause fires or explosions. WHMIS was created to help stop the injuries, illnesses, deaths, medical costs, and fires caused by hazardous materials.

Dreams Take Flight with Air Canada by Samantha Bray, Station Operations Manager, YQR,

Air Canada

Dreams Take Flight is a national volunteer charitable organization dedicated to providing the trip of a lifetime to physically, mentally, or

socially challenged children. With the aid of Air Canada, other national and local organizations and businesses, money is raised to make dreams a reality. The criteria for Dreams Take Flight can be found online at www.dreamstakeflight.ca. This year Air Canada staff took four Regina children to Disney World for a day (April 17th). We departed for YWG on April 16th and had a blast watersliding at the hotel that afternoon. The wake-up call on the 17th was at 1:45am with wheels up on the flight to Orlando at 5:00am. The flight was complete with a pillow fight on take-off, a healthy breakfast, movies and dilly bars! We headed straight to the park and went on as

many rides as possible. The favourites were “The Mountains”...Splash Mountain, Space Mountain and Thunder Mountain. The plane ride back to YWG was pretty quiet after such a long day! Overall, the kids had a blast and it was truly a once in a lifetime experience for them. I would like to thank all Air Canada and Jazz employees, especially those at YQR who dedicate their time to fundraising for and organizing this event. It certainly would not be possible without all of their hard work. We look forward to participating in this again next year and making more dreams come true!

How was WHMIS developed?WHMIS was developed by a tripartite steering committee with representatives from government, industry and labour to ensure that the best interests of everyone were considered.

Is WHMIS a law?Yes. WHMIS became law through a series of complementary federal, provincial and territorial legislation that became effective October 31, 1988.

The majority of the “information” requirements (and exemptions) of WHMIS legislation were incorporated into the Hazardous Products Act and the Hazardous Materials Information Review Act. These apply to all of Canada. Regulations made under these acts include:

• Controlled Products Regulations, • Ingredient Disclosure List, • Hazardous Materials Information Review Act Appeal Board Procedures Regulations, • Hazardous Materials Information Review Regulations.

The occupational health and safety components of WHMIS that apply to federal employees and others covered by the Canada Labour Code (CLC) are specified in the CLC and the Canadian Occupational Health and Safety Regulations (Part X).

The following acts and regulations apply to workers and employers covered by the Saskatchewan legislations: Occupational Health and Safety Act and Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, Part XXII.

What are the duties under WHMIS?Suppliers, employers and workers all have specified responsibilities in the Hazardous Products Act.

Suppliers: Canadian suppliers are those who sell or import products. When this product is considered a “controlled product” according to the WHMIS legislation, a supplier must label the product or container, and they must provide a material safety data sheet (MSDS) to their customers. The purpose of the labels is to clearly identify the contents of the hazardous material, and the MSDS is to explain what those hazards are.

Employers: Employers are required to establish education and training programs for workers exposed to hazardous products in the workplace. Employers must also make sure that the products are labeled and that an MSDS is present for each product and that they are readily available to workers.

Workers: Workers are required to participate in the training programs and to use this information to help them work safely with hazardous materials. They may also inform employers when labels on containers have been accidentally removed or if the label is no longer readable.

What are controlled products?Controlled products is the name given to products, materials, and substances that are regulated by WHMIS legislation. All controlled products fall into one or more of six WHMIS classes.

YQReviewJunos 2013by Kari Dean, Director of Communications, Regina Airport Authority

spring 2013 fire safety and fire extinguisher courseby Jamie R. Smith, Firefighter, Regina Airport Authority

Regina International Airport was full of excitement and musical energy on Friday, April 19 as the Junos kicked off into high gear in the

Arrivals Area with performances by Dead South, a four-piece acoustic ensemble who entertained us with some great folk and blue grass tunes; performers from Miller Comprehensive High School entertained arriving passengers with flash mob performances; members of the RCMP in red serge along with Suzanna (the RCMP dog - a gift from the Queen); members of the media joined in to take in the sights and sounds; as well as many wonderful and helpful Juno volunteers and RROCstar volunteers handing out promotional items, pins and valuable information for the busy Juno Festivities.

With the volume levels being quite high in the Arrivals Area, RAA wishes to thank everyone for their patience and understanding during this event.

Co-operative weather and high enrolment made this year’s extinguisher course a success. If you catch a fire early, knowing how

to use a fire extinguisher can be an asset. Keep these 8 steps in mind when using a fire extinguisher: 1. PASS = pull, aim, squeeze, sweep 2. Make sure the fire extinguisher is upright. 3. Remove the plastic tie from the handle. 4. Pull the pin from the handle. 5. Aim the nozzle low while keeping the extinguisher upright. 6. Squeeze the handle. The substance will be released. 7. Move in toward the fire, keeping the extinguisher’s stream focused on the base of the fire. 8. Sweep the extinguisher’s nozzle from side to side until the fire is out. If the fire is not going out, exit the area immediately.

their knowledge to the test

One of the objectives of extinguisher training is to ensure the participants know how to properly use a fire extinguisher. In the event of a fire, it is important that no one puts themselves or anyone around them in additional danger. If you are trained and can easily extinguish a fire, then do so. If not, immediately evacuate the area and call for help.
