KEY TERMS AND FURTHER INFORMATION
Icebreakers: Icebreakers are a facilitation exercise; they are short warm ups and getting to
know you activities designed to encourage the mixing of participants. An example of this is the
game Two Truths and a Lie.
*Schools are encouraged to express an interest in leading an icebreaker via the registration
form (but please ensure the activity is no longer than 15 minutes).
Simulations: Simulations are a fun way of studying a global issue; they are an imitation of the
operation of a real-world process or system. An example of this is teaching people about the
concept of international trade using coloured paper to represent resources (and imposing
restrictions on various participants) and instructing them to negotiate with each other for a
specified set of resources.
*Students or teachers are encouraged to express an interest in running a simulation via the
registration form (but please ensure the activity will last about 45 minutes and can
accommodate up to 40 students).
Un-conferenced sessions: Un-conferenced sessions are an informal meeting designed to
exchange ideas brought on through conference activities, and, encourage collaboration
between schools when planning future action taken. An example of this is the creation of a joint
schools animal welfare group after a speech by Nancy Gibson at last years conference.
Un-conferenced sessions will be finalized during the conference and cannot be registered for
beforehand.
How to Session:How to sessions are a presentation by a small group of students from
a school designed to inform other delegates of what they have done and how it could be doneby someone else. Preferably, these how to sessions will describe how the group of presenters
(preferable 3-6 people) have tackled a global issue and then inform delegates of how to run a
similar event in their own school. A good session should be part presentation introducing the
topic, followed by an activity, demonstration, video etc. of how the students addressed the topic,
an evaluation of their method and suggestion of how others could adapt this for use in their own
school. An example of this from a previous conference is How torun a sleepout.
*School groups are expected to lead how to sessions via the registration form (please put
this down on one individuals form who will act as the group leader). A session should last for
roughly 45 minutes; necessary facilities can be made available with advance notice.
Student Key Note Speaker: Student key note speakers are student delegates who deliver a
speech on a topic they are particularly passionate about and discuss their contribution to raising
awareness for/ fundraising for/ combating this global issue. There will be 2 x 30 minute slots
available for 2, 3 or 4 student key note speakers. Therefore a presentation can be 15 or 30
minutes in length. An example of this from a previous conference is delegate Sarika Bhatt who
delivered a speech on HIV/ AIDS and her project raising awareness of Dreams we believe in.

*Student key note speakers cannot apply via the registration form; details for application of a
presentation slot will be given after delegate numbers have been recorded.
Christmas Fair and NGO Exhibition: The Christmas Fair and NGO Exhibition is the equivalent
to the past Student Service Fairs. There will be a Christmas Fair at Regents with many goods
from various NGOs for sale where students can go to purchase products and find out moreinformation about the work they do. Delegates can also have booths advertising their
organizations within their school to help connect with other interested delegates and community
members. An example of this is an ACWA merchandise booth.
*Delegates are encouraged to register for a booth via the application form (please note that
anyone running a booth will miss out on the Icebreaker activity on Saturday morning so that
they can use this time to set up) but please use one individuals form to register for the whole
group.
Dodge ball for Kates Project: Dodge ball for Kates Project is a new element introduced to the
conference this year and will involve a dodge ball tournament aimed at raising funds for Kates
Project Trust. This will be achieved by asking delegates to fundraise money at their school in
order to raise the required entry fee (details will be given later). All delegates will be expected to
participate and costumes and competitive spirit are encouraged!
*All delegates and teachers will automatically be registered for participation in this; further
details on teams will be given after registration of candidates has been completed.
Debating: Debating is another new addition to the program this year; delegates from each
school will need to form a debating team who will argue for / against a given topic (e.g. should
animals be kept in zoos?) against other delegates from other schools and possibly your own
school!
*All delegates will automatically be a part of this. Further details of instructions, rules and topics
will be given after registration of delegates has been completed.
