The Regenerative Bioscience Center is a collaborative faculty effort interested and funded in regenerative medicine. Using these resources we have established projects pertaining to fracture healing, stroke modeling and diabetes regulation. Current ongoing collaborative projects between Drs. Franklin West (Stem cell Biologist) and Simon Platt (Veterinary Neurosurgeon) are developing a large animal translational model for stroke. Drs. Steven Stice (Stem Cell Biologist) and John Peroni are developing rapid bone regeneration models for injured soldiers among other projects. Stroke Modeling Training and Education: All faculty are devoted to the progression and training of upcoming scientists and researchers. Our faculty members mentor students from multiple universities including Emory University and Georgia Institute of Technology disseminating knowledge in stem cell culture. This collaborative environment also allows students to take advantage of additional opportunities including fulfilling an industrial internship with RBC affiliated stem cell companies, as a graduate student from Dr. Todd McDevitt’s lab is currently completing. The Facilities: Current facilities are capable of housing large animals for biomedical research. The regenerative medicine facilities have the ability to provide suitable housing for large animal studies including donor pigs for Emory’s work on islet transplantation (Dr. Allan Kirk), and pigs and sheep for osteogenic modeling (Fracture Putty). A unique stem cell core facility is available and used by several RBC members. The veterinary hospital has the capacity to provide imaging systems needed for monitoring physiological activity in large animals, including dedicated cath labs, CT and MNR for veterinary clinical and research activities. Veterinary Clinical Cases: The case load at the College of Veterinary Medicine can serve as a test bed for many future human therapies. Dr John Peroni is the President of the North American Veterinary Regenerative Medicine Association. The Regenerative Bioscience Center is proud to be a host to progressing research at the convention in Savannah, Georgia next fall.
