Words To The Wise
“If it doesn’t work out the
way you want it to, it will
work out the way it’s sup-
posed to be.”
Julia Nichols
November 27, 2006 Board Meeting Treasurer Nick Catania sug-
gested we add more to the re-
serve fund of the 2007 budget in
case we suffer hurricane damage
next year.
Catania said some items have
to be adjusted before he signed
the proposed budget. Directors
decided to meet within the week
to review it again before all sign-
off on it. Soon after, notice of
maintenance fees and coupon
books will go out to homeowners.
The transition to the new se-
curity transponders will take
place after the first of the year.
Campbell Property Management
will inform residents of the time
and dates of the turnover from
the present to the new system.
The gatehouse computer is
slow to respond especially in
warm weather, and at least needs
to be examined by a qualified
technician.
The clubhouse pool seems in
need of an acid wash. The spa
has a leak for the third time, in-
dicating there is hole in the line
that must be found and repaired.
Joe Daesch continues to re-
port clubhouse income from pri-
vate parties. The committee
spent over $3,000.00 in Septem-
ber on new patio furniture. Let’s
take good care of it.
Greta Silver announced she is
retiring after the January 2007
newsletter. Directors gave her
thanks and appreciation, made a
motion and unanimously voted
her secretary of the Master Asso-
ciation. Most likely, unless an-
other resident wants to take over,
Campbell Property Management
will send out a quarterly infor-
mative letter to residents. Silver
said she would like Campbell to
start using the bulk rate for mail-
ing pieces to the Regency Lakes
community.
There will be another Com-
munity Garage Sale in January,
2007. Look on page 5 for details.
There is plenty of time this go-
around to get ready for it. Just
slap your price tags on your
pieces, get ready to bargain and
clean out your garage. If you
haven’t worn it, used it, needed
it, remembered it . . . YOU
DON’T WANT IT! Do you? Re-
duce the price and get rid of it!
Buddy up with someone so you
have relief time to go shopping.
Wishing everyone in Regency
Lakes a happy, healthy and
peaceful holiday season.

Reading Buddies
Tradewinds Elementary is looking for
volunteers to spend a few hours helping
children to read. Volunteers would be asked
to come into the classroom to help students
practice their reading and writing skills.
Times and hours are extremely flexi-
ble, and Grandparents and high school stu-
dents are welcome! Tradewinds Elementary
is located at 5400 Johnson Road, (between
Lyons Rd and SR 441). If you are inter-
ested or have any questions, please call

Checking Your Security
All Regency Lakes homes should be
covered by a security system. Originally,
Cypress Trace (954-755-1432) installed
systems in all homes built by Regency
Builders. Those built by Lennar have had
two or three changes until the present com-
pany, Devcon (954-660-6559 or 800-810-
7404), took over. To be safe, call Cypress
Trace or Devcon to make sure you are
listed.
Reduce Water Consumption
The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) has issued a water
shortage warning and has asked residents
and agricultural water users to voluntarily
reduce water consumption and limit irriga-
tion times as a preemptive measure to avoid
or forestall potential water shortage orders
and mandatory water restrictions this up-
coming dry season. Some ways to conserve
water are:
♦ don't leave the water running while
brushing your teeth
♦ don't take long showers
♦ fix leaky fixtures
♦ don't over-water lawns
Essex Park Block Party
With Fred Bryan leading the all male
committee, the Essex Park party was in
very capable hands. The women voted
unanimously to have the men take over par-
ties permanently because Fred, Sandford
Salyers, Brett Gavagni and others did such
a good job! The turnout was better than our
first party of the year, and the food was
more than ample, delicious and varied.
Marti Evans painted faces (with the
kids’ assistance), Wes Weeks and Carlos
Pepin provided great music for hours, and
the children played games and did some
arts and crafts. We’re all looking forward to
the next get-together, and hope more Essex
Park neighbors will join us. Greta Silver

Pet Stores and Puppy Mills
If you plan to adopt a puppy from a pet
store this holiday season, please consider the
following information. A recent study reports
that 90% of dogs sold in pet stores come from
puppy mills. Many of these animals are
crammed into small wire cages, exposed to ex-
tremes of heat and cold, not provided with
proper food, deprived of exercise and socializa-
tion and not given medical treatment. Most of
these dogs, especially the females, live in
squalid conditions and lie in their own urine and
feces for their entire lives. When they are no
longer able to breed, instead of allowing them to
be adopted or humanely euthanized, many are
then sold to medical research labs to live the
remainder of their lives being tortured in grue-
some experiments.
But while they are being bred, their pup-
pies are taken away when they are very young,
crammed into crates and shipped off in unsani-
tary conditions to puppy stores. These puppies
are often mentally and physically ill from the
deplorable and disgusting conditions under
which they are bred.
Mindful of reaping profits, puppy mill op-
erators try to maximize their output of animals
while they minimize production costs. That
means the puppies’ well being is never taken
into account. Puppy mills dump countless un-
vaccinated, neglected and genetically unfit pup-
pies on the unsuspecting public each year. Both
pet and guardian are left to suffer the conse-
quences of the poor care provided in puppy
mills. Recently CNN Featured The Wizard of
Claws in Hollywood, Florida, a mill that was
sued by numerous customers who had spent lots
of money on “designer” puppies that turned out
to be extremely sick and diseased.
There are roughly 5000 licensed puppy
mills in the U.S falling under the jurisdiction of
the USDA and treated under the law as live-
stock. There is very little oversight and too few
inspectors, so anything goes. Prosecutions and
citations are few and far between. Thousands
more, sometimes known as backyard breeders,
breed and sell animals without being licensed or
inspected. Most large-scale puppy mills are lo-
cated in the Midwest. As long as the public con-
tinues to support these operations by buying
puppies from puppy stores, these facilities will
continue to produce millions of innocent pup-
pies under cruel and barbaric conditions. Many
puppies sold on the Internet originate from these
very same puppy mills. (You can contact your
Senators and Congressional Representative and
ask them to support HR 2669 and S1139, other-
wise known as the PAWS Act, which aims to
improve conditions in these facilities.)
While millions of puppies are being pro-
duced, there are 8-10 million animals relin-
quished to shelters every year in the U.S. Half
of these animals are euthanized. Thirty percent
of the animals taken to shelters are pure-breeds.
Shelters have wonderful animals and some have
gone on to do wonderful things such as becom-
ing world class Frisbee players, pet therapy
dogs, and search and rescue dogs. Some even
achieve celebrity status like Benji who was dis-
covered in a Mississippi shelter. Most shelter
dogs are mixed breeds and they usually are
healthier since they are less likely to inherit the
200 or so genetic diseases often associated with
purebreds. Although there are lots of puppies
available for adoption in shelters, the best dogs
to adopt are the older ones. Our mom adopted us
when we were about two years old and her pre-
vious dog, Bucky, was adopted when he was
seven years old. If your heart is set on a particu-
lar breed, there are rescue groups for every
breed imaginable. You can locate them on the
Internet. You can also check out www.
petfinders.com where you can view thousands
of animals waiting for their forever families. If
you do adopt a dog or a cat, remember to spay
and neuter your companion animal to help pre-
vent pet overpopulation.

Fruits are nature’s way of smiling at us. They are pretty, taste
good and are good for us. They nourish our energy, produce healthy
fluids, lubricate our intestines, aid digestion, tone deficiencies and
may even help to overcome mental depression. Regular and moder-
ate consumption can increase our energy and vitality.
Oranges rank high in popularity. Originally from China, or-
anges have been long known to have tremendous health benefits.
Today we know they contain large amounts and varieties of vita-
mins and nutrients. Specifically, they contain large amounts of vita-
mins c, a, folic acid, potassium, carotenoids, bioflavonoids, photo-
chemicals, phytonutrients, terpenes, coumarins, glutathione and glu-
canate. The juice is good, fresh naturally is best, but the whole or-
ange is by far the real deal. Many of the special nutrients are in the
pulp and even the skin. Once juice is in the carton it loses much of
it goodness, but not all.
Oranges help combat nervous tension, insomnia and many dis-
eases, stimulate the lymphatic system and fight off colds, flu, bron-
chitis and more. Oranges stimulate the digestive system and can
benefit spasms, constipation and diarrhea. The nutrients, nutraceuti-
cals and phytonutrients can normalize body chemistry, speed up cell
metabolism and help cleanse body wastes and toxins. The carote-
noids, flavonoids, terpenes and coumarins are an extremely potent
anticancer package. They often can block cancer cell activation be-
fore it begins. Oranges can neutralize chemical carcinogens, lower
blood pressure, increase circulation, stimulate the immune system
and even help weak gums and teeth. They can also benefit arterio-
sclerosis and lower cholesterol. Oranges are an antiviral and strong
anti-inflammatory, and they contain salicylates related to aspirin.
What a health package!
An apple a day. A lemon a day. An orange a day. What natural
vitamins!

Happiness
Happiness is a warm puppy. (Charles Schulz)
Sooner or later in life everyone discovers that per-fect happiness is unrealizable, but there are few
who pause to consider the antithesis: that perfect
unhappiness is equally unattainable. (Primo Levi)
My advice to you is not to inquire why or whither, but just enjoy your ice cream while it's on your
plate. (Thornton Wilder)
It is one of the most beautiful compensations of this life that no man can sincerely try to help an-
other without helping himself. (Ralph Waldo
Emerson)
For most of life, nothing wonderful happens. If you don't enjoy getting up and working and finish-
ing your work and sitting down to a meal with
family or friends, then the chances are that you're
not going to be very happy. If someone bases his
happiness or unhappiness on major events like a great new job, huge amounts of money, a flaw-
lessly happy marriage or a trip to Paris, that person
isn't going to be happy much of the time. If, on the
other hand, happiness depends on a good breakfast,
flowers in the yard, a drink or a nap, then we are
more likely to live with quite a bit of happiness.
(Andy Rooney)
Always do what you want, and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those
who matter don't mind. (Dr. Suess)

Putting Some Punch Into New Year’s Eve Some of us can’t hold liquor. I’m not talk-ing about people who down several doubles and
get hungover. I’m talking about folks who be-
come inebriated looking at the label on a closed
liquor bottle. People like us know we should
stop drinking before we start. But on occasions
such as New Year’s Eve, when those around us
hold their glasses high and are as high as helium
balloons, it’s nice to have something other than a
Shirley Temple.
People like us don’t head for the bottles.
We go for the punch bowl figuring that with all
the ice cubes, fruit and sherbet the concoction
has to be so diluted we can’t possibly become
polluted with one drink.
This is not so. It’s safer to head for the bot-
tles. A very nice person earned a terrible reputa-
tion she didn’t deserve, all because of a punch
bowl.
In her defense I’ll backtrack to the previous
day when her daughter fed her son silver polish
and the emetic of mustard in water didn’t work
because the baby loved it and asked for “Mo!” A
trip to the doctor resulted in one pumped baby
tummy and one mild tranquilizer for Mommy
who was in worse shape than baby. Mommy
decided to save the pill for the next crisis and
placed it in a very safe place.
Back home Mommy settled the kids and
put the diaper bag way up high and began to
make dinner. She had almost stopped twitching
by the time the kids’ lamb chops were sizzling in
the broiler. She had almost stopped crying by the
time hamburger patties were chilling in the
fridge for Daddy and her. But then she thought
the children were much too quiet so she went to
check them and golly gee they were playing
with the diaper bag that had been put way up
high. Oh my gosh, the pill! Mommy frantically
searched for the pill. She couldn’t find it.
“Where is it?” she ask. Sister said, “All
gone!” Baby said, “Mo!” Mommy cried, “I want
my mommy!”
But Mommy’s mommy wasn’t there, and neither was Mommy’s husband, and the lamb
chops in the broiler were on fire and Mommy
had to put out the fire, fan the smoke out of the
kitchen and quickly change the kids’ menu to
burgers. Mommy went to the fridge, opened the
door and was very surprised when the glass
bowl with the burgers fell on the floor and shat-
tered into a few thousand shards.
Mommy became very upset. She cried
again. She twitched harder and she really wanted
the pill the doctor had given her but she didn’t
know which child was storing it. What should
Mommy do? Call the doctor to make an appoint-
ment for two stomach pumpings? A reservation
for one private room with padded walls for her-
self? Pick up the glass? Wash the floor? What?
She didn’t have to do anything because just
then Daddy came home and when he saw
Mommy babbling incoherently, sister feeding
baby teddy bear stuffing and baby asking for
“Mo!” Daddy put Mommy to bed fully dressed
where she mercifully fell into a coma until the
following morning when she undressed and
found the pill in her bra where she had put it.
That night, New Year’s Eve, Daddy took
shaking Mommy to a party where he said, “One
drink won’t hurt,” and Mommy said, “You know
it, Toots.” They headed for the punch bowl
where Daddy said it was just orange juice with
ice cubes, fruit and sherbet. Daddy didn’t know
that three bottles of vodka already been added to
the vitamin enriched orange juice so he added an
overflowing jigger of vodka to Mommy’s
drink, and within the hour Mommy was the life
of the party.
That was 47 New Year’s Eves ago. My
Chicago friends never have let me live that night
down. To this day they do not believe I only had
one drink, mainly from the punch bowl, or that I
have not touched vodka since.
But I am proud of one thing. I was the only
person at the party who managed to recite,
“Sarah, Sarah, sitting shining shoes. When she
sits she shines all day, when she shines she sits
all day. Sits and shines, shines and sits. Sarah,
Sarah, sitting shining shoes.” Perfectly.
Try saying that when you’re as high as a
helium balloon.
Happy New Year everyone. May it be filled
with good health, good friends and good humor. Greta Silver, Kvetch 22

The Manager’s Report As of the end of November, 2006, here are a few projects un-
derway or completed:
♦ The damaged palms in the common areas have been cut
down and the stumps ground out. We will be working with
the city to see what they will require for replacements.
♦ The flowers have been planted throughout the common areas
and have already gotten off to a great start.
♦ The sidewalks and curbs were pressure cleaned during the
first week of December. It was necessary to wait until CPM
finished removing the dead and damaged trees to complete
the project. Sign makers were in all communities to repair
broken street signs during this time.
♦ Gate Systems installed our new entry system. We are still
waiting for the final sign-off from the City. Once this is re-
ceived, we will send out letters detailing the specifics of the
new system and set up dates and times for residents to pick
up the new transponders and cards.
♦ The promised fence behind Fairmont Park finally has been
installed.
♦ I have asked the City to assist with the businesses in front of
Regency Lakes to have their dead palms removed and/or re-
placed and their entry signs pressure cleaned and/or painted.

A Letter From Dennis I thought I’d write a letter to let you
know how I am doing. So far, after being
here a month I am still getting used to the
change. Ohio isn't as wild and crazy as
South Florida. For those of you who are
wondering what I am doing job wise, I am
still with Wackenhut. They have me work-
ing second shift at Nestle Research and De-
velopment. Sorry to say that I can’t get any
free samples to send you.
There are so many of you to thank for
what you did for me in the four years that I
was working at Regency Lakes. To name a
few…
Joyce Karney, you always made sure
everything was OK, and always kept me on
my toes. Tell your father I miss his smiling
face when he walked Cosmo.
Antoinette Palazzolo always made sure
I had what I needed, made me copies of pa-
pers I needed, and brought me lunch occa-
sionally.
Nick Catania, thank you for being up
front and honest and helpful with things.
Gary Blum, thank you for helping me
with situations in Sandpiper when it was
needed, and with gift cards.
Jim and Denise Engle, thank you for
being good friends and helping with police
issues.
Dave Glasgow, “Mr. Philly Cheese
Steak Man,” thank you for all the subs and
making sure I was good on other issues.
Omar and Leandra Jimenez, thank you
for the Dunkin’ Doughnuts breakfast, cake
on your son’s birthday and many other
things.
Steve and Debby Braun, I can’t thank
you enough for the time you helped me
when I wound up in the hospital two years
ago and with many other things.
To those of you who bought me food
and water during holidays and after Wilma
last year, thank you so very much.
Ann McCarthy, thank you for the candy
you always gave me. Thanks for the sugar
rush!
Herb and Greta Silver, thank you for
the help you gave me with the newsletters
and letting me be blunt and honest when I
needed to be. Also thank you for the travel
basket you gave me when I left. It came in
great use.
To Brian Tight and Rick Turner, thank
you for trusting me with decisions I made,
and for giving me the opportunity for being
in charge. It was a pleasure working for
you.
To the rest of the residents, thank you
for everything again. I consider most of you
friends, a second family. I can’t thank you
all enough. It was an honor and pleasure
being there for you all. I miss you all.
If you would like to write me, my ad-
dress is 526 Allenby Drive, Marysville,
Ohio, 43040. My e-mail address is Fla-
[email protected]. If you e-mail me,
please put your last name in the subject line.
I wish the best for all of you and I hope
to visit soon.
Yours truly,
Dennis DeWitt
