Engine or PTO DrivenWhich One Is BestPumps are about providing flow to the hydraulic system. It really does not matter to the pump what source is used to turn the pump. The biggest questions that must be answered are space, overall value, and the system flow requirement.

Engine DrivenToday most refuse trucks use engine driven pumps. The primary reason these pumps were mounted on the engine is because they could not be mounted to a PTO due to space considerations.

AdvantagesThe primary advantage to attach the pump to the engine are as follows: 1. Large pumps can be mounted to the engine keeping the engine rpm’s to a lower setting to create flow. 2. Pump replacement is easy because the mechanic does not have to crawl under the truck to replace a worn pump.

Disadvantages The engine driven pump is the most expensive means to drive the hydraulic system on a refuse truck because of the following considerations. 1. A hole must be designed into the radiator to allow access to the engine shaft that couples to the hydraulic pump. This hole makes cooling the engine more difficult due to the smaller radiator capacity and as a result reduces the engine life. 2. The design of the front bumper of the truck must allow for the size of the pump being used and the hydraulic connectors and hoses required. The larger the pump the more space is required to fit the pump, hoses, flow controls, and connectors. 3. The pump is limited by the speed of the engine. Therefore if you want more flow, the driver must increase the engine rpm’s which costs more fuel to the refuse fleet. 4. Additional hydraulic hoses and connectors are required to allow for additional hydraulic components such as bypass blocks, unloaders, bleeder valves, and flow controls. These components in addition add substantial weight over the front axle. [100 + lbs]

PTO Driven Today most rear loaders are PTO driven. These tend to be smaller trucks, where pumps can be directly mounted to the PTO and fit between the frame rails.AdvantagesThe primary advantage to attach the pump to a PTO is as follows: 1. The cost to design a hole in the radiator is eliminated. This helps keep the engine cooler by increasing the radiator capacity. 2. The front bumper does not have to be redesigned. 3. The PTO has multiple speeds that can be used versus increasing size of the pump to create greater flow. This also allows the engine to be decreased to a lower setting reducing fuel consumption. 4. The number of hydraulic hoses is greatly reduced as bypass blocks, unloaders, bleeder valves, and flow controls are eliminated. 5. HOC [Hydraulic Overspeed Control] can be replaced by EOC [Electronic Overspeed Control] eliminating extra components on the Hydraulic Valve. The EOC is a standard option for the Allison transmission, and the only additional cost is the labor to install an inexpensive relay. 6. The hydraulics can be shut down completely while the driver is on his way back to the landfill saving the fuel that would normally be used. 7. Reduces the overall weight in front of the axle by 200+ lbs.

DisadvantagesThe primary disadvantage to using a PTO are as follows: 1. In order to mount larger pumps a drive shaft must be used, and the mechanic must use caution when working on the truck. 2. Spline wear can be a problem on certain size pump shafts and can be overcome by using a wet spline system to keep the shaft lubricated in oil all the time. 3. Generally no pilot size greater that a 4” SAE B pilot can be used.

New Technology Installation on PTO and Pump combinations can be a challenge. Parker has developed special pumps and PTO’s to make these installations easier for the installer for any type of refuse truck Front Loader Rear Loader or Side Loader. Note: Allison Transmission with HD oil cooler on 4000 series must must be shaft driven or mounted on an 891 PTO.

General InformationWet Spline TechnologySpline wear is one of the major causes of PTO and pump fail-ures. Spline wear occurs even when the PTO is not engaged. Vibration coming off of the engine and transmission causes the splines to wear resulting in shaft failures. Depending on the maintenance procedures for the fleet, premature spline wear can occur in as little as 1 year or last significantly longer by greasing the splines every 90 days.

Wet Spline Technology virtually eliminates spline wear by lu-bricating the shaft with a constant supply of fresh transmission oil keeping the splines looking like new. The wet spline system does not require any grease, or maintenance to keep the splines lubricated.

Wet spline technology is providing results the refuse industry has never seen. Pictured below is an example with and without wet spine technology on the same route for the same time.

Types of PTO’s

Constant MeshConstant Mesh PTO’s do not provide for any additional fuel savings over front mounted engine driven pumps. In order to reduce fuel, the system still requires the use of either a Dry Valve, HOC, or Electronically control pump system used in vane technology. Once the engine is running the PTO is turning all the time. The constant mesh PTO’s are offered in several speeds to offer greater flow options using the same pump. Using a faster turning PTO can reduce the pump size required, and still produce the same flow as a larger pump.

Hot Shift PTO’s

Mack Trucks With Allison’s Integral Oil CoolerThe 890 PTO will not fit Mack Trucks due to interferences with the heavy duty oil cooler. A new 891 PTO is currently being tested for mounting to a Mack Truck using an Allison 4500 series transmission. The 891 is scheduled for release sometime in June of 2010. Note: Air Tanks may need to be relocated or moved, and a special oil cooler hose kit installed in order to make the in-stallation on current trucks.

New truck orders should request that the Oil Cooler Kit be installed by the dealer before delivery is taken.

NOTE: 378840 street tee required for pressure lube and must be purchased separately. Only the pressure lube line 328075X (line to the idler pin) is included with the P.T.O. Request" and "P.T.O. Enable Output" feature. The "P.T.O. Enable" circuit signals the Transmission Control Module(TCM) to maintain line pressure to the P.T.O. Failure to provide this signal may not be sufficient to the P.T.O. This may cause damage to the P.T.O. and /or Transmission. Please see the Allison Transmission website and individual chassis manufacturer for installation details.

NOTE: The 3700 and MD3070 have P.T.O. Availability on the Left-Side Only. The Right-Side is Utilized by OE Equipment. CAUTION: Chelsea requires the P.T.O. installation on the 1000/2000 series transmission to utilize a Vehicle Interface Module, or Chassis Manufacturers' equivalent controller to incorporate all the P.T.O. control features available, this includes the "P.T.O. Request" and "P.T.O. Enable Output" feature. The "P.T.O. Enable" circuit signals the Transmission Control Module(TCM) to maintain line pressure to the P.T.O. Failure to provide this signal will activate the Variable Modulated Main Pressure and line pressure may not be sufficient to the P.T.O. This may cause damage to the P.T.O. and /or Transmission. Please see the Allison Transmission website and individual chassis manufacturer for installation details.

NOTE: There is torque converter lock up feature available with the 1000/2000/2400 series transmissions. The torque converter lock up feature comes on and is controlled by the Transmission Control Module (TCM) when a signal is provided to the "P.T.O. Enable" circuit of the TCM by the P.T.O. switch. Lock up will only come on in the "NETURAL" and "PARK" positions at 1100 RPM transmission turbine speed. This equates to 1200-1250 RPM or higher engine speed, depending on P.T.O. load. The lock up clutch does not come on automatically in "DRIVE" at 1100 RPM. Refer to the appropriate owner's manual for wiring installation.

NOTE: Pre-2005; To connect the Chelsea P.T.O. switch to the "P.T.O. Enable" circuit of the TCM, a wiring kit must be ordered depending on the type of shifter being used. For Shifter without EOC order 329336-1X, for Shifter with EOC order 329336-2X and for Shifter with Pilot Valve order 329336-3X. These kits will include wire and installation instructions. ORDER SEPARATELY

NOTE: MY2003 and after GM "C/K" Series 4500, 5500, 6500, 7500 and 8500 Trucks - If using the GM provided in-dash switch, use wiring harness 379924 for the 270/271 and 230/231 Series P.T.O.s. Use wiring harness 329619X for the 252 Series P.T.O. if torque converter lock-up is required for the application. ORDER SEPARATELY

NOTE: For 270/271 Series order P.T.O. Hose Installation Kit 329365X to complete P.T.O shifter installation.

NOTE: The 645 geared adapter listed on this application page is for the 442*F Ratio Only. A 442ZFHV with 7-A-140 filler block and 7170-1X stud kit must be used when mounting the P.T.O. to the 645 adapter.

NOTE: If the 442 Series is ordered with Pressure Lube, Hose 328075X is supplied with the P.T.O. A Restrictor Orifice, 379896 (442*FHVP) or 379594 (442*BHVP) is required and is shipped with the P.T.O.

NOTE: Output Shaft Rotation is "Engine" (Eng) Only for 442*B Ratio, DO NOT USE with Geared Adapter.

NOTE: A lube "T" fitting is required in the oil return cooling line to supply low pressure oil to the idler shaft of the 230, 231, 252(left side), 270, 271, or 442 Series P.T.O. The 378840 "T" fitting is for transmission model 1000 with the SAE #3 bell housing, 378970 "T" fitting is for the transmission model 1000/2000/2400 with the SAE #2 bell housing, or the low pressure return line may be cut with a tube cutter and then a compression "T" fitting may be installed. The high pressure port requires a 7/16-20 O-ring boss fitting.

Failure to provide this signal will activate the Variable Modulated Main Pressure and line pressure may not be sufficient to the P.T.O. This may cause damage to the P.T.O. and /or Transmission.

NOTE: There is torque converter lock up feature available with the 1000 series transmission. The torque converter lock up feature comes on and is controlled by the Transmission Control Module (TCM) at 1100 RPM transmission turbine speed when a signal is provided to the "PTO Enable" circuit of the TCM by the P.T.O. switch. This equates to 1200-1250 RPM or higher engine speed, depending on P.T.O. load. Lock up will only come on in the "PARK" position. The lock up clutch does not come on automatically in "DRIVE" at 1100 RPM. Refer to the appropriate owner's manual for wiring installation.

NOTE: The P.T.O. torque ratings shown are based on the maximum allowable torque of 250 lb-ft at the 64 tooth gear in the transmission with the P.T.O. on one opening only. With P.T.O.s mounted on both openings the maximum allowable torque at the 64 tooth gear in the transmission is 200 lb-ft. For a more precise evaluation of your P.T.O. application refer to the Allison Body Builders Book, Section F, P.T.O. Systems Provisions.

NOTE: The 252 Series on the MY 2007 and later GM 3600 Cab/Chassis requires a wiring harness Chelsea part number 329620X. This harness must be ordered separately and is required for proper P.T.O. to Engine interface operation. Refer to GM UI Bulletin #80.

NOTE: Only the 12v "B" option shifter can be used on this application.NOTE: The left P.T.O. aperture opening on this application is not usable due to engine fuel lines blocking the opening.

PTO Driven Allison Automatic Cut Off

The primary advantage of using a PTO is that the Hydraulic sys-tem can be completely shut down using a PTO. This reduces fuel consumption versus engine driven pumps by the amount of HP being drawn from the engine to operate the pump.

Using the 277 PTO the following applications are commonly driven by a PTO.

Cost-Saving Patented Innovation Pack eject cylinders are the most expensive and hardest to replace hydraulic components on the refuse truck. Damaged, corroded and leaking cylinders are the leading cause for downtime, and the single largest line item on the maintenance manager’s hydraulic budget. Cylinders made prior to the NG Series have proven to not hold up in the field. Understanding the demands of the application, Parker’s Mobile Cylinder Division has developed innovative technology that addresses the most common failure modes including corrosion, spill over, side load and seal wear.

Incorporating Nano Shield Technology by Parker, Mobile Cylinder Division has developed a Next Generation Pack Cylinder (backed with a 4 Year Warranty) to reduce the total cost of ownership over the 10 to 12 year life expectancy of the vehicle. This translates into savings of $7,932 per vehicle. This savings is conservative, based solely on acquisition cost and R&R (remove and replace) and does not include additional savings related to customer service interruptions, unscheduled downtime, loss of oil, EPA Fines, etc.

Taking the Lead At the core of the Pack Cylinders is a truly innovative technology, developed for the U.S. Department of Defense. Parker’s Mobile Cylinder Division is proud to be the first to apply this nano technology in a commercial mobile application.

Proven Strength & Durability Parker has impact-tested the coating, showing it improves the life of the cylinder up to 5x longer than competitors’ products. Horizontal and vertical seal wear tests ran 800,000 combined leak-free cycles and showed superior performance in environmental chamber tests. Corrosion testing against the harsh “Juice” associated with Refuse Industry resulted in the cylinders withstanding 1500 hours in the ASTM B117 Salt Spray and 200 hours with no failure in the ASTM B368 CASS (Copper Accelerated Acetic Acid Salt Spray). Nano Shield Technology by Parker provides up to 7x the longevity of Chrome and Nitride treated surfaces.

The nano-crystalline structure of the coating protects against abrasive wear (up to 50% lower) and offers a superior coefficient of friction and sliding wear performance compared to hard chrome. This structure extends the life of the coating and rod seals and improves adhesion and ductility.

The high strength tubing and rod material is 20% stronger and 4x harder than standard 1026 DOM. Parker testing revealed no damage from an equivalent impact force of 4,000 lbs (typical force generated by a shovel strike is 2,200 lb).
