Refurbishment - General Principles
• Eskom Project Life Cycle Model (wires PLCM) is followed.
• Investment justifications are based on following criteria:
• Statutory
• Strategic
• Least Economic Cost
• Operating Cost Reduction
• Assets to be refurbished in accordance with asset life-cycle
management plans (LCMP’s).
• Condition, criticality & risk assessment (CCRA) principles are being
implemented for refurbishment investment decisions. (Likelihood of
asset loss vs. criticality of the asset to the network)
Refurbishment Capital Expenditure Drivers
• Refurbishment
• Targeted Asset Performance Improvements
• Refurbishment of existing assets
• Physical security improvements, surveillance and monitoring
• Strategic and operational spares holding (to reduce SML<1 and major incidents risk)
• Compliance (Regulatory, OHS Act, NKP Act, Environmental etc.)
• Asset Purchases
• Specialised equipment for: live-line work; fault location systems, and online condition monitoring.
