As I write, the world cup is in full swing. The group games have beenentertaining and have thrown up somesurprises – whateverhappened to Germany?

Perhaps the mostsurprising thing about thisworld cup is not what hashappened on the pitch but thatit is happening in Russia.

With diplomatic relationsbetween the west and thehosts at their lowest since thecold war,

it is a testament to sportthat this world cup hashappened at all. But happen ithas; and so far has been veryentertaining.

What strikes me is thatwhen politicsfades to thebackground, andsomethingelse is thefocus, peopleseem to “get on better” (at least on thepitch!). In football, as in other sports, many different cultures come togetherand compete within the same rules; it’s alevel playing field and despite theoccasional questionable refereeingdecision, the best team usually wins.

For me this “getting on better” is thekind of feeling I often get on a Sundaymorning. As I look at the congregation in

church I am often struck by the variety ofbackgrounds, cultures, and ethnic originthat are represented. In church we stand

shoulder to shoulder, alllooking in the same direction –towards God – and there is areal sense of unity, ourcommon focus unifies us. Isuppose it’s no surprise thatdiehard fans sometimesdescribe attending a footballmatch as something akin to a“spiritual experience”.

Politics is so often themain substance of the news(how we long for Brexit to fadeto the background!) and itoften sets us at loggerheads.

So it is refreshing to watcha sporting event that manages

to unitenations ratherthan dividethem – andthis timeseeminglydoing it against

all the odds.Perhaps the message of all this is

that although, as we are constantlyreminded, Brexit has divided us as anation, when we concentrate on acommon focus we find ourselves moreunited.

With all best wishes for a happy andpeaceful summer.

Fr Matthew
