GROUP DIRECTORMESSAGE FROM

It give me immense pleasure in writing a note for

our 4th issue of Pharma Magazine of Lloyd

Institute of Management & Technology, Faculty

of Pharmacy - Lloyd Reflections.

The most remarkable achievement in the recent

past has been NBA Accreditation of Bachelors

programme of Pharmacy at Lloyd. This is a huge

milestone and places Lloyd on a global platform as

provider of world-class education and research,

based on Outcome-based teaching methodology.

Each and every Lloydian has been a part of this

progress and I congratulate my staff and students,

present and alumni to have been a part of this

fantastic milestone.

In the last year we have had many exciting

changes transpiring in our Pharmacy School, from

impressive faculty hires, to new certification

programmes, to improving the experiences of our

students.

This new group of faculty brings outstanding

talents and remarkable research activity that will

complement the exceptional work done by our

current faculty members. Several of our faculty

members are involved in teaching endeavors that

have the potential for nationwide impact.

Our industry -focused education has been getting

great attention as the new trend in higher

education, in research projects at Masters level.

We have been proud recipient of Research grant

from Dr A P J Abdul Kalam University. At the

same time, we continue to be deeply committed to

attracting the highest caliber students to our

school and offering wonderful educational

experiences.

Lloyd Job fest have made us earn name and fame

through the last 4 years. It is an amazing feat to see

1500 pharmacy graduates from all across India

undergoing interviews for various profiles in 35

top pharmaceutical companies in Lloyd campus..

Thank you to everyone who has contributed in

making these changes around the college a reality;

these new projects would not have been able to

launch without the hard work of faculty, staff,

students, and alumni. I look forward to sharing the

positive outcomes of the programs and initiatives

in future issues of the Lloyd Reflections.

PRINCIPALMESSAGE FROM

teaching-learning methodology and the

governance structure of the Institute.

We are very happy to announce that we are now an

NBA Accredited Institute!

There are close to 2000 pharmacy colleges in India

and less than 100 of them are NBA Accredited. It

speaks volumes about the quality of education and

overall learning experience that the students and

faculty have created in Lloyd.

Lloyd also organized its 1st Cultural Fest, Lloyd's

Carnival-2019, and it was a roaring success with

more than 42 colleges/ universities participating

that made Carnival-2019 the biggest cultural

event in Greater Noida.

The edition in your hand is being released with the

NIYUKTI-2019, the 4th Annual Lloyd Job Fest

and by the looks of it; it is going to be bigger and

better than the last one. At the time of writing these

lines, we have 1292 students and 32 companies

registered with us.

With a promise to keep up the momentum, raising

the bar of quality

The 4th edition of the pharmacy newsletter of my

Institute, LLOYD REFLECTIONS, is in your

year it has been!

NIYUKTI-2018 saw 1300 students and 35

companies from all over India congregating and

more than 250 job offers being made in one single

rigorous process that evaluated us on a very wide

range of quality benchmarks viz., academics,

exam results, research, publications, quality and

quantum of placements, student welfare

processes, faculty development policies,

achievements outside the realm of academics,

Expenditure on R&D in India: A Snapshot

India occupies third rank in awarding PhDs after China and US, but the expenditure that we do on Research and

Development (R&D) is much lower than not only these two, but also South Korea and Israel, as per the Economic Survey

2017-18.

Although the Gross Expenditure on R&D (GERD) of India has more than tripled from Rs. 24,117 crore to Rs. 85,326 crore

in the decade from 2004-05 to 2014-15, the percent GDP spend still hovers at 0.6 to 0.7% in the last two decades.

GERD is mainly driven by the government sector, with central government accounting for 45.1 %, state governments 7.4

%, public sector industries 5.5 % and institutions of higher education 3.9 % of the total GERD. The private industry

accounted for the balance 38.1 % as shown in the figure below.

Comparing the levels of participation of the government of India with those in 13 other countries - USA, UK, Spain,

Russia, Korea, Mexico, Japan, Italy, Germany, France, China, Canada and Australia, it found that India topped the list

in terms of government participation but it hit the bottom in terms of participation of institutions of higher education.

A significant fact is that 81.3 % of R&D expenditures incurred by central government sources came from just eight

major scientific agencies: Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) led the table with a share of

37.8 %, followed by Department of Space (16.6%), Department of Atomic Energy (11.6 %), Indian Council of

Agricultural Research (11.4 %), Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (9.5 %), Department of Science and

Technology (7.7 %), Department of Biotechnology (2.9 %) and Indian Council of Medical Research (2.4 %) during

2014-15.

harmacist as a atient Counseller

Health is a state of being free from any illness or injury. It is very important to treat any kind of disease in order to

maintain one's health. Physician by checking the signs and symptoms of a particular disease prescribes medication.

The patient takes that prescription to the pharmacist who validates the prescription, cross-checks the medication

prescribed, provides the medicines and most importantly counsel the patient in order to increase the patient's

knowledge about the health issue. This is a very important step because the patient gets to know more about his/her

disease and treatment and pharmacist gets to know more about the patient which helps to establish trust between the

pharmacist and the patient.

The population of India is about 133.92 crores and according to the Retail Druggist and Chemist Association total

number of pharmacies in India is about 550,000 which seems a significantly low number serving the patient

nationwide. If any doubts related to the dosage of medication, time of administration are not cleared, the patient may

deteriorate his/her health by following the wrong prescription. Let's face it, the writing of doctor while writing a

prescription is not understandable sometimes which may lead the pharmacist to give wrong medicine and patient

eating the wrong medicines which can be hazardous many a time.

The patient counseling aims to increase the knowledge of patient about the route of administration (if the medicine has

any special instruction), time of administration of the medicine, dosage of the medicine (generally the dose for child is

less as compared to the adults), and any side effects. Also, the pharmacist should clear any doubts of the patient, if

he/she has any, related to the course of medication The pharmacist should be patient enough to understand the patient,

establish trust so that the patient can ask anything to the pharmacist without any hesitation. It is not possible to counsel

everyone but the pharmacist should clear any doubt of the patient whenever it deems necessary or if the patient is

having any problem. Hence, the counseling plays an important role in understanding more about the problems a

patient is facing and the pharmacist clearing his doubts for better diagnosis and treatment.

They are sold as tablets, capsules, powders, teas, extracts, and fresh or dried plants. People use herbal medicines to try

to maintain or improve their health. Many people believe that products labeled "natural" are always safe and good for

them. Herbal products owe its popularity due to a myth that they carry no side effects. Moreover, herbal products

available claim themselves as pure but studies have shown that they may contain synthetic substances which may

cause severe side effects. Some of the most common synthetic adulterants are given in the table on the right side.

The problem of adulteration in herbal products is due to less stringent

regulations. The concerned regulatory authorities should take required

measures to curb this issue.

Herbal medicine is also called botanical

medicine or phytomedicine. It is refers to a

plant's seeds, berries, roots, leaves, bark, or

flowers used for medicinal purposes.

Herbalism has a long tradition of use outside

modern of conventional medicine. It is

becoming more mainstream as improvements

in analysis and quality control along with

advances in clinical research show the value

of herbal medicine in treating and preventing

the disease.

PROBIOTICS: AN OVERVIEW AND ITS THERAPEUTIC APPLICATIONS - Dr. Lalit Kumar Tyagi

Professor

In future, probiotics are likely to emerge as a suitable alternative to conventional antimicrobial therapy. Probiotic

therapy has proved to be useful in a number of clinical conditions like inflammatory disease, infectious disease and

allergic problems. A careful selection of probiotic agent, its dose standardization and a complete knowledge of its

advantageous effect has proved as an efficacious tool for medical therapy. Probiotic therapy may be used in IBD in

primary or secondary areas of active mucosal inflammation. They are likely to emerge as an alternative to

antimicrobial therapy with lesser number of adverse effects.

Table No. 1: List of Microorganism used as Probiotics

Probiotics are effective in various clinical conditions such as:

Inflammatory bowel disease and ulcerative colitis

Female uro-genital infection and urinary tract infection

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NE)

Helicobacter pylori infections

Surgical infections

Probiotics in allergic diseases

Pouchitis

The gastro-intestinal tract (GIT) flora consists of a highly varied microbial flora. In the late 19th century

microbiologist observed differences in the micro flora of gastro intestinal tract of healthy individual and that of

diseased person. Several pathological conditions, use of radiation therapy and immunosuppressive therapy may

cause a change in the composition of gastro-intestinal flora.

In such a condition introduction of those bacteria that are profitable to gastro-intestinal tract provide an advantageous

effect. The term "probiotics" was first coined by "Lilly and Stillwell" in 1965. Probiotics are defined as live micro

organisms which are administered in sufficient amount to provide health benefits on the host.

Probiotic bacteria have been investigated in the treatment of various conditions like Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis

and pouchitis etc. Organisms which are commonly used as probiotics include Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium

Some microorganisms which are used as probiotics are sammurized in Table 1.

Pharm. of Lloyd attended the orientation. 32 students from 8 different colleges including Ram-eesh, Sharda University, IIMT etc., took part in the debate competition, "Vivaad". The debate was on a very topical issue, "Online Pharmacy vs Traditional Pharmacy".

Students from different colleges arrived at the venue around 9:30 am. Sh. S L Nasa, Registrar, Delhi Pharmacy Council and President-Indian Hospital Pharmacists' Association was the Chief Guest of the event. The event was presided by Sh. Manohar Thairani, President, Lloyd Group, and was inaugurated by the Group Director Dr. Vandana Arora. As part of the orientation of the new students, Mr. Nasa presented the Pharmacist's Lab Coats to all the students.

As a part of his address to the students Mr. Nasa shared the latest news from the Drug Control Department, that pharmacists are now an agent of empowerment to the patients as every pharmacy shop will mandatorily have a dedicated shelf stocked with generic medicines. The patient will have the choice to ask for branded drugs or cost effective generic drugs.

The debate competition, Vivaad-2018, saw some spirited debates where budding pharmacists from different colleges of Greater Noida came to Lloyd and displayed their amazing awareness about the pharmacy profession and laws and regulations governing it. To gist out the conclusion in brief, the students who spoke for the favor of online pharmacy stressed that it is convenient, cheaper, feasible to buy anywhere and at anytime, better knowledge of the product. Those who were in the favor of traditional pharmacy stressed on the risks of fake prescription, misleading naming, and majority under poor economy hence going online itself will be an issue for them.
