School News

Welcome Reverend Kate BoughtonWe are blessed to have Chaplain Kate (right) join the Collegiate community. Kate was ordained

as a Deacon in 2008 and a Priest in 2010. Before coming to Collegiate her roles have seen her

working extensively with children, youth, young adults and their families, both in Tasmania as

Assistant Curate at St David’s Cathedral and Diocesan Ministry Assistant, and in Melbourne as

an Associate Minister at St Jude’s Anglican Church.

‘Emily’ BearFor many years Collegiate’s Junior School has carried the symbol of a teddy bear. At the start

of the 2017 school year we introduced ‘Emily’ (right) who is a larger than life replica of the bear

that all new students receive upon confirmation of their enrolment at Collegiate. Named in

honour of Mother Emily who founded the Order of the Community of the Sisters of the Church,

our ‘Emily’ has quickly become a very popular member of the Collegiate community.

RowingThe Collegiate rowers (below right) have had a very successful season coming away with

a total of six shields for overall performances in the Junior and Girls aggregates as well as

numerous individual crew results. At the Head of the River, Collegiate had six wins across the

age levels, eight seconds and two thirds. These results helped to earn the Junior Aggregate

Shield and place a respectable fourth for the overall Girls Aggregate. The U16 crew went on to

compete at the National Championships in Penrith, placing an impressive 6th in the A final.

School FairThis year we enjoyed stunning weather for the Collegiate School Fair. With over 26 different

stalls, an abundance of beautiful food and a buzzing community atmosphere, the Fair was yet

another successful event for the Collegiate Parents and Friends’ Association. A huge thank you

must go to all those who donated goods, services and time to support this special event. It is

a true reflection of the wonderful Collegiate community spirit.

Student Care and WellbeingStudent care at Collegiate has as its central objective the development of the whole person

through our pastoral care structure and programs, quality relationships and sound academic

care. Our starting point is building positive relationships where all members of the community

are committed to fostering a positive learning environment. The Junior School is presently

implementing ‘KidsMatter’ - a positive mental health and wellbeing framework, built upon in the

Middle School by the ‘MindMatters’ program. Our Senior School Wellbeing Program focusses

on principles of Positive Psychology. In an approach we believe to be unique, our Year 11 and

12 House leaders take on the role of ‘Custodians of Wellbeing’ and work with the Wellbeing

Coordinator to deliver a range of activities that cultivate habits of the mind.

From the PrincipalThis year marks the 125th anniversary

of St Michael’s Collegiate. As a school,

Collegiate has empowered generations of

girls to imagine the possibilities for their

future, thereby enabling them to follow their

aspirations. Just one look at our Inspiring Old

Girls Gallery on the School website tells me

that Collegiate does this exceptionally well.

As Principal, I often reflect on those

indomitable, resilient women who left their

homes and family behind in 1892, completely

committed to their vision of educating young

Australian women in the Anglican tradition.

How grateful we are to the Community of the

Sisters of the Church who built such a strong

foundation from which we can all flourish and

prosper.

I look forward to celebrating our remarkable

heritage with you at a variety of events

throughout Collegiate’s 125th year.

On Friday 3 March, Her Excellency, Professor

the Honourable Kate Warner, AC, Governor of

Tasmania (1965 Leaver) and Mr Warner hosted

a magnificent Reception to mark Collegiate’s

125th Anniversary. Her Excellency remarked

that it was the largest reception she and Mr

Warner had hosted in her time as Governor.

The event was attended by 200 guests,

predominantly old girls of the School, who had

come from as far afield as Western Australia

and the United Kingdom for this celebration

of 125 years of exceptional education for

girls in Hobart. Two of Collegiate’s oldest Old

Girls, June Gibson (1934) and Mary Hamilton

(1936), were especially feted during the

reception.

In her address, Her Excellency read out

remarks from her school reports over the

years, including comments on her “erratic

arithmetic” and “talking in class” and her

many trips to Sister Jessica’s office for one

infringement or another. In concluding, Her

Excellency spoke of the many challenges the

Tasmanian education system, and parents,

have faced over the years, and her gratitude

for her “sound education” at Collegiate.

Principal’s Midwinter SymposiumThe inaugural Principal’s Midwinter Symposium bought together some of the leading minds

in the country and showcased an informative discussion on issues relating to the future of

education. The 2016 topic was ‘Girls’ education - on the cutting edge’.

Joined by a Collegiate audience of 200, panel members discussed the critical role we all play

in empowering girls for their future. Each of the four panel members spoke from the heart in

regards to their own experiences in education, their career, their family and identified how they

believe an appreciation of diversity and international values has shaped and inspired them to

become who they are today.

Outstanding TCE resultsWe are delighted to announce the success of our most recent Year 12

Leavers who continue to uphold Collegiate’s long tradition of academic success.

Warmest congratulations are extended to Solbi Kang, Jessie Horder-Geraghty, Evangeline

Drinnan, Joanne Li, Cassady Swinbourne and Danielle Lee whose results placed them in the

2016 Top 100 Tertiary Entrance Scores for Tasmania.

Five Collegiate students scored an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) above 99, placing

them in the top one percent nationally. We extend congratulations to Solbi Kang 99.9, Jessie

Horder-Geraghty 99.75, Evangeline Drinnan 99.6, Joanne Li 99.3 and Cassady Swinbourne 99.2.

Nineteen Collegiate students scored an ATAR above 95, placing them in the top five percent

nationally and 33 students achieved an ATAR of 90 or more placing them in the top 10 percent

nationally.

The 2016 Leavers chose to support local Tasmanian charity, SHE (Support, Help,

Empowerment), to make a tangible difference to the lives of others through the provision of

funds for counselling services and support for women who have, or are currently, experiencing

family and domestic violence. An astonishing $27,570.65 was raised throughout the year,

demonstrating that success at Collegiate reaches far beyond scholastic attainment.

as School Chaplain. Collegiate is delighted to have Chaplain Kate join our community to

enable our staff and students to flourish by showing them the love, compassion, justice and

forgiveness of God.

Our current Year 12s have decided to support The LINK with a particular focus on their national

program, headspace. They have also identified ‘confidence and courage’ as the theme for

2017 - a fitting follow on from last year’s theme of ‘empowerment’.

Principal’s Midwinter SymposiumThis year we are delighted to announce the Principal’s Midwinter Symposium topic will be ‘Collegiate Women in Science.’

As you may be aware, Collegiate has recently announced planning the next stages of a state

of the art Science rebuild which will incorporate contemporary STEM (Science, Technology,

Engineering and Mathematics) learning spaces. This will ensure the School remains futures

oriented and a leader in the exceptional education of girls. Collegiate stands for the provision of

opportunities for girls to develop the behaviours, skills, habits and mindsets that will allow them

to dream big, to try new things, to fail, to reimagine and try again so that they can make their

way confidently through the world. With research telling us that in the future, 90% of jobs will

require skills in STEM or STEAM fields, our commitment to supporting our girls is unwavering.

We look forward to our panel discussing the relevance of a new science facility for our girls to

utilise into the future.

The 2017 Principal’s Midwinter Symposium is scheduled for Tuesday 13 June 2017.

Save the date in your diary and join our panel of Old Girls speakers as they discuss ‘The Power of Women in Science’.

The Shadforth’s Travelling ScholarshipThe Shadforth’s Travelling Scholarship is awarded each year to a Collegiate staff member to assist in their professional development.

The Positive Schools Conference ‘Leading, Learning and Caring’, held in Melbourne in 2016,

was a wonderful opportunity to work with leaders in the field of Student Wellbeing. A major focus

of several presenters was positive psychology and whole school approaches to improving

student wellbeing. This is topical in Australia at present as we have recorded high rates of

anxiety in children, particularly in girls. As such, many sessions were focused on risk factors

and how schools are working to address these.

Keynote speaker Professor Lea Waters holds the Gerry Higgins Chair in Positive Psychology and

is the Director of the Centre for Positive Psychology at the University of Melbourne. Professor

Waters is a registered psychologist (AHPRA), and a member of the College of Organisational

Psychologists. She works with individuals and schools to promote wellbeing through positive

psychology and has developed a suite of workshops for students and teachers to implement

this in the classroom. Our Junior School is currently reviewing and developing our student

wellbeing program and working alongside Professor Waters has proved invaluable.

Trina Cummins, Director of Wellbeing and Positive Education at the Wilderness School shared

her school’s work on Positive Education: Increasing Student Wellbeing and Engagement.

During her presentation, she shared how students are explicitly taught wellbeing strategies

and how the school has a holistic plan to develop this across the grade levels.
