Patrick Denoun Art Lithographs

For more than 20 years Puerto Vallarta was fortunate to have Patrick Denoun as a resident artist. Originally from France, but more a citizen of the world, Patrick provided us with art that was continually evolving and always fascinating. When his series of market scenes in Mexico and Puerto Vallarta were first shown at an exhibition at Galería Pacific, they nearly sold out in the first day. Now, for the first time, the most popular are offered in a series of four prints, available in Reflections of Mexico. Patrick passed away in a motorcycle accident near his Vallarta home on April 8, 2007. He is survived by his wife, Cathy, and his children, Max and Sasha. Proceeds from the sale of these prints go to Cathy, Max and Sasha.

Palm Leaf Handicrafts

One of the most useful crafts in Oaxaca are those made from palm leaves. The Mixteca region is known for the work of these skilled weavers who produce many items of palm leaves. The process takes a long time, people sit for hours weaving and designing the features of these items. There are several varieties of palm trees that are cut into the mountains. After the leaves are carried on mules or donkeys to the workshops. The leaves are dried in the sun for three or four days. Then they add pigments or dyes, if necessary. Funny thing is that tenate always carry a smell of seeds.

Alebrijes

Alebrijes are brightly-colored Mexican folk-art sculptures of fantastical animal-like creatures carved in soft copal wood, as originally made in Oaxaca, Mexico. Pieces are carved using machetes and knives. Carvings created from a single piece of wood are normally considered of higher quality than those assembled from multiple pieces, although elements such as ears and horns are frequently carved separately and fitted into holes so they can be disassembled and shipped safely. Finished pieces are hand-painted, a true piece of art with the essence of Mexican culture in every color.
