Notes on the ProgramWhen I was in the sixth grade, my teacherasked us to write an essay. I told mymother I didn’t have anything to writeabout. She took me to the back yard, laiddown in the grass with me, and asked“what do you see?” As she guided methrough my thoughts and observations, Idiscovered a sense of wonder that hasstayed with me throughout my life. Whenthe theme Reflections of Light was presented, my mind flew to my fascinationwith the moon and stars, and the musicselection began. At the heart of the pro-gram is Choose Something Like a Star, from the poetry of Robert Frost, in whichwe are encouraged to reach for the great-ness within us and inspiration from above. Also woven throughout the program is theecho of a phrase my mother often used,“hitch your wagon to a star,” which compelled me to constantly reach out tosomething beyond the ordinary to anunlimited horizon. My teaching always gobeyond the making of beautiful music tothe deeper truths that lie within the texts.

Surrounding this centerpiece is a constella-tion of the serious for spiritual inspirationand more fanciful musings that come fromour childhood and lift the spirit. All youngsingers need a sense of American “musi-cana” as we learn the songs of our parentsand grandparents. Those of my age mayhave grown up with By the Light of theSilvery Moon, Fly Me to the Moon, orWhen You Wish Upon a Star. Other selec-tions may be new, but the messageremains the same. Look out. Look up.Reach out. Be transformed! This is myhope for all of us. This is our song.

Concerto for Flute, Harp, and Orchestra,LRC 268b (World Premiere), 16 minutesDinos Constantinides (b. 1929)

My composition Concerto for Flute, Harp, and Orchestra, LRC 268b, is written forand dedicated to Iris Derke and DCINY incelebration of their ten-year anniversary in2018. Iris suggested the work be a com-panion of the famous Concerto for Flute,Harp, and Orchestra by W.A. Mozart, butwith Greek ideas against a backdrop of mynative country, Greece. I used some mate-rials from my past work in new combina-tions. For instance, in the first movement,“Reflections,” a whole tone figure statedby the flute and harp as well as somecadences are drawn from an old work ofmine using the poetry of the great contem-porary poet Constantine Kavafis. The sec-ond movement, “Hymn,” employs theDelphic Hymn, dated from around 200 B.C.and found in Delphi. I used this music foran LSU theatre production of Sophocles’play Oedipus Rex, directed by Bill Harbin. The final movement, “Dance,” is a settingof traditional Greek dances that share theirmodal quality and lively mixed meterrhythms. In reality, the entire piece isderived from my background as a Greekmusician.

Requiem in c, 45 minutesLUIGI CHERUBINI (1760 – 1842)

Luigi Cherubini was born in 1760 inFlorence, Italy and died in 1842 in Paris. Inaddition to writing sacred music, includingseveral masses and two requiem settings, one for male voices, Cherubini composedoperas (e.g. Les Deux Journées, andMédée). He moved to France in 1786,eventually working for the ParisConservatory and serving as music direc-tor at the royal chapel of Louis XVIII.

Cherubini wrote Requiem in c in 1816 for aservice in memory of Louis XVI on January21, 1817. (Louis XVI was beheaded in theFrench Revolution 23 years previously.)

Page 4: Reflections of Light · 2018-03-08 · When you wish upon a star, as dreamers do. Fate is kind, she brings to those who love the sweet fulfillment of their secret longing . Light

The King’s services were held in a cryptbelow the abbey church of St. Denis, which housed the bodies of several Frenchkings. Perhaps due to that limited space, but also perhaps to his own intimate viewof the text, Cherubini used relatively smallmusical forces and did not include soloists. It is quite “classical” in style but withsome dramatic elements that foreshadowthe Romantic era. Beethoven greatlyadmired the Requiem and it was per-formed at his funeral in 1827. Schumannand Brahms also spoke highly of themusic, but the Archbishop of Paris bannedit in 1834 for the use of female voices. Inresponse, Cherubini composed a Requiemin d minor for men’s voices that was per-formed at his own funeral.

There are seven movements: I. Introitus etKyrie; II. Graduale; III. Sequentia (Dies irae;Recordare; Lacrimosa); IV. Offertorium(Domine Jesu Christe; Quam olim Abrahae;Hostias); V. Sanctus et Benedictus; VI. PieJesu; VII. Agnus Dei et Communio.

The first two movements are small-scaleand intimate ones, scored primarily forlower strings. Cherubini engages the fullorchestra for the third movement, repre-senting the drama of the text (“Dies irae –Day of wrath” and “Rex tremendae” –“King of awful majesty”). This complexmovement spans a range of moods toreflect the varied lines of text. The fourthmovement contains a powerful fugue(“Quam olim Abrahae”) which is doubledin tempo when the text repeats. The brief“Sanctus” links directly to the “Pie Jesu,”which is set simply for chorus, lowerstrings, and winds, supporting the emotionof the text. The final movement, “AgnusDei,” begins with an outcry from the cho-rus that contrasts with the humility of thewords, “Grant them rest.” The coda hasthe chorus intoning the text on a unisonpitch C at a very quiet dynamic level, andthe orchestra finally resolves to a C majorchord.

Stars I Shall FindBy Victor C. Johnson

There will be rest, and sure stars shiningOver the roof-tops crowned with snow,

A reign of rest, serene forgetting,The music of stillness holy and low.

I will make this world of my devisingOut of a dream in my lonely mind.

I shall find the crystal of peace, – above meStars I shall find.

Choose Something Like a StarBy Randall Thompson

O Star (the fairest one in sight),We grant your loftiness the rightTo some obscurity of cloud –It will not do to say of night,Since dark is what brings out your light. Some mystery becomes the proud. But to be wholly taciturnIn your reserve is not allowed.Say something to us we can learnBy heart and when alone repeat.Say something! And it says “I burn.”But say with what degree of heat.Talk Fahrenheit, talk Centigrade.Use language we can comprehend.Tell us what elements you blend. It gives us strangely little aid,But does tell something in the end.And steadfast as Keats’ Eremite,Not even stooping from its sphere,It asks a little of us here.It asks of us a certain height,So when at times the mob is swayedTo carry praise or blame too far,We may choose something like a starTo stay our minds on and be staid.

— Robert Frost

When You Wish Upon a StarBy Leigh Harlinearr. Roy Ringwald

When you wish upon a star, makes no dif-ference who you are

anything your heart desires will come toyou.

If your heart is in your dream, No request is too extreme, When you wish upon a star, as dreamers do.Fate is kind, she brings to those who love the sweet fulfillment of their secret longing Like a bolt out of the blue, fate steps in andsees you through;

When you wish upon a star, your dreamscome true.

– Ned Washington

Fly Me to the Moon (In Other Words) By Bart Howardarr. Kirby Shaw

Fly me to the moon, and let me playamong the stars;

Let me see what spring is like on Jupiterand Mars.

In other words, hold my hand!In other words, darling, kiss me!Fill my heart with song, and let me sing forever more;

You are all I long for, all I worship and adore. In other words, please be true!In other words, I love you!

True LightBy Keith Hampton

This little light of mine I’m gonna let itshine.

(Repeated)

Almighty God is light. He lives in us as True Light.

In the beginning out of the darkness Godcreated True Light.

He lives in us as True Light.Almighty God is light. He lives in us as TrueLight.

Don’t let the light that You’ve given me die,And don’t desert my mind. But let the one who serves You Praise Youagain and again.

He lives in us as True Light.

You are the one who judges right fromwrong.

Your glory excites no envy. But let the one who serves You Praise Youagain and again.

He lives in us as True Light.

This little light of mine I’m gonna let itshine.

Everywhere I go, I want the world to know.God gave the world True Light!Hold on to the true light.

Requiem in c By Luigi CherubiniTranslated by Olivia Holmes

1. Introitus et Kyrie

Requiem æternam dona eis, Domineet lux perpetua luceat eis. Te decet hymnus, Deus, in Sion, et tibi reddetur votum in Jerusalem.

Exaudi orationem meam; ad te omnis caro veniet. Requiem æternam dona eis, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat eis.

Kyrie eleison; Christe eleison; Kyrie eleison.

Grant them eternal rest, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.A hymn of praise awaits you, O God, in Zion, and a vow shall be made to you in Jerusalem.

Hear my prayer;to you all flesh shall come.Eternal rest grant them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.

Lord have mercy;Christ have mercy;Lord have mercy.

2. Graduale

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. The just shall be remembered forever, and they shall not fear bad news.

3. Sequentia

Liber scriptus proferetur, in quo totum continetur, unde mundus judicetur.

Judex ergo cum sedebit, quid quid latet apparebit: nil inultum remanebit.

Quid sum miser tunc dicturus?

ii. Recordare (Coro unisono)Rex tremendæ majestatis, qui salvandos salvas gratis, salva me, fons pietatis.Recordare, Jesu pie, quod sum causa tuæ viæ: ne me perdas illa die.

The day of wrath, that daythe world will be scattered in ashes,as David and the Sibyl will witness.

How great will be the quaking, when the judge will come, strictly investigating everything!

The trumpet, scattering an awful soundthrough all the graves of all the lands, will summon all before the throne.

Death and nature will be filled with awe, when all creation rises again,to answer to the judge.

The book of life will be brought forth,in which all is contained, from which the world shall be judged.

When, therefore, the judge will sit, whatever lies hidden will appear:nothing will remain unavenged.

What then will I say, poor wretch that Iam?

Which patron shall I call upon, when even the just will feel insecure?

King of tremendous majesty, who freely saves those to be saved, save me, O font of mercy.Remember, merciful Jesus, that I am the cause of your ways:do not lose me on that day.

Quærens me, sedisti lassus: redemisti crucem passus: tantus labor non sit cassus.

Juste judex ultionis, donum fac remissionis ante diem rationis.

Ingemisco, tamquam reus, culpa rubet vultus meus, supplicanti parce, Deus.

Confutatis maledictis, flammis acribus addictis, voca me cum benedictis.

Oro supplex et acclinis, cor contritum quasi cinis, gere curam mei finis.

iii. LacrimosaLacrimosa dies illa, qua resurget ex favilla, judicandus homo reus.

Huic ergo parce, Deus: pie Jesu Domine, dona eis requiem. Amen.

Seeking me, you sat down, tired:you have redeemed me through your suf-fering on the cross:

so much hardship should not be in vain.

Just judge of vengeance, make a gift of forgivenessbefore the day of reckoning.

I sigh, like the guilty one,my face reddens with guilt, spare the supplicating one, O God.

You who absolved Mary, and listened to the robber, you have given hope to me, too.

My prayers are not worthy;but you who are good, graciously grantthat I not be burned up by the everlastingfire.

Grant me a place among the sheep, and take me out from among the goats, setting me at your right side.

Once the cursed have been silenced, sentenced to acrid flames, call me with the blessed.

Humbly kneeling and bowed I pray,my heart crushed as ashes, take care of my last day.

That day will be a tearful one, when the guilty man to be judged, will rise from the ashes.

Then spare him, O God:merciful Lord Jesus, grant them rest. Amen.

Lord Jesus Christ, King of glory, free the souls of all the faithfulwho have risen from the pain of helland from the depths of the dungeons.

Free them from the mouth of the lion;do not let Tartarus swallow them up.Do not let them fall into darkness;but may the standard-bearer, Saint Michael, lead them into the holy light, which you once promised to Abrahamand his seed.

Sacrifices and prayers to you, O Lord,we offer praise;accept them on behalf of those soulswhom we remember today.Let them, O Lord, pass over from death to life,as you once promised to Abrahamand his seed.
