Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Resurrection was recently blessed with a bequest from the estate of Arlene Gage. Ten thousand dol- lars was given, and the church council has decided to put the money toward renovation of the Sari’s Friends Pantry and outside bathrooms. Along with her donation, we will also designate rental income collected from the renters of the house on Becky Ct. in Merritt Island (before it was sold to them) toward that work.

The pantry is in desperate need of new floors, doors, and an air conditioning system to cover not only the pantry rooms but also the outside bath- rooms to the east of the sanctuary. Our pantry has

helped thousands of people over the years, given out and repaired hun-dreds of bicycles, and, so far, helped eight of our homeless friends escape the street.

Along with the generous gift left to us by Arlene Gage and the rental funds, we have identified a few other small sources of funding for the pro-ject, but we are still about $5,000 short of getting the entire job done.

If you are interested in/able to donate those funds, please let me know. We will be dedicating the work in loving memory of Arlene and would be happy to add another name to that plaque – just let me know.

Finally, thanks to Marilyn Sorenson and all her faithful volunteers! You are warming hearts and changing lives!!

Peace, Pastor Jay

Council Members Dr. Michael Miller, President Bill Bond, Stewardship Jim Stark, Vice-President Marilyn Sorenson, Social Ministry Ann Fosburr, Secretary Kathy Lueders, Evangelism Jenn Billingham, Fellowship Christian Education Property, Mitch Wilson (Buildings) Debbie Rescott, Treasurer (Advisor) Ben Troemel (Grounds) Michelle Davis, Financial Sec. (Advisor) Alfred Domschke (Administration) Angelika Domschke, Worship

The Church Council meeting was held on May 8th and here are some highlights of discussions and decisions.

The minutes of the last meeting were reviewed. - The pastor gave his report highlighting a homeless friend that we helped to escape the street. He passed around a picture of this man beside airplanes he repairs in Sanford. - Our Budget and Finance Chairman, Bill Bond, reported that the congregation was $30,000 ahead of last year in regard to General Fund giving. It was suggested that it was the result of his innovative stewardship program. - Treasurer’s Report – available on request and posted in the fellowship hall. - Evangelism Report was read. A car wash will be held on May 19th. A yard flag has been procured for Community Saturday and for the car wash. Greeters have been lined up for April and May. Com-munity Saturday updates will be posted on Facebook. Print advertising will be updated to reflect the summer worship schedule. - Worship – We are back to sharing the peace during worship. We will move to one Sunday morning service at 10:00 a.m. from the first Sunday in May to the last Sunday in August. A special Worship Committee meeting will be held on May 13 to decide whether or not to extend this one service sched-ule through the month of September. A Christmas Cantata is being considered if there is enough par-ticipation. - Fellowship – Times are open to sponsor a fellowship time over the summer months. - Social Ministry – the pantry has been very busy! 132 people were served during the month of April. That’s the largest total ever. Many who come to the pantry say, “Pastor Jay sent me.” We are check-ing to make sure that all the food items we distribute are within their “use by” dates. Both the greeting card ministry and bike ministry held workshops recently. At this time, men’s flip flops in various siz-es are needed. Once school is over, small bags will be packed for children who come with their par-ents to the food pantry (taking the place of the lunch they would receive at school). List of contents of these bags will be posted so that members can help. Property – a new member has been added to the committee. The playground equipment destroyed by

Hurricane Irma will soon be replaced. 3 bids for the narthex roof will be prepared. Lights in the

breezeway were replaced. A new bench was set up for our pantry guests under the trees on the east

side of the property. A bid for air conditioning the pantry and outside bathrooms was received.

Old Business – - The closing on the house on Becky Ct. was held. The house sold for $330,000. - The mortgage on the Ministry Center will be refinanced. The new mortgage payment will be half what it was previously at $2,200 per month. - Narthex roof – 3 bids will be obtained within the next 2 weeks. - The coffeemaker in the fellowship hall has been repaired. -A bid was received to replace the floor in the food pantry. The bid was $5,650. New Business –

-A motion was made to add what we received in rent on the Becky Ct. house to the funds available to ren-

ovate the pantry. That motion was seconded and approved. We will still fall $5,000 short of doing all the

work that needs to be done (new doors, AC, Flooring). The congregation will be invited to help us reach

the goal.

-A request was received from Jaide Connor for a scholarship to Luther Springs Gator Camp this summer. The council voted to send a check to Luther Springs in the amount of $350. - Pastor presented his proposal for a new Ministry Center sign. The wording was approved after some changes in wording. - The June council meeting will be held on the 4th.

Every week, I am amazed at how members of our congregation continue to provide Connections for us as LCR congregants and our community. Each of these connections are examples of each of us using our god given talents. Examples of this include Lynn's high noon knitting class, the gift card group and the folks leading and cleaning the beach every fourth Saturday. Ruth Bleakley came up with a great idea to share her talent.

Ruth's Gift "A few Sundays ago Pastor Jay had a great sermon ("Lace Up those Running Shoes" April 29, min 06:46) where he spoke to a la-dy in a golf cart outside of the hospital and about reaching out to neighbors and friends with the good news.

It's been in the back of my mind for a few weeks that if we're not feeling bold enough to talk to strangers about our beliefs, how about if we start small and reach out to new people online?

Currently when you search for "Lutheran church Cocoa Beach" we're the top result on google, if you search for "Church in Cocoa Beach" we are #8 on the first page of google. (and #3 in "10 best churches in Cocoa Beach" on Yelp)

Have you noticed that Google emphasizes "reviews from the web"? Thankfully all five stars, but our church has only 12 Facebook reviews (most recent, 5 months ago) and only 7 google reviews (most recent, 1 month ago). Also shout out to Libby VanZino for leaving the ONLY 1 yelp review (four years ago)

Now, given that our congregation has a couple hundred people in it, I think it would be great to get more reviews online!

BUT WAIT!!! if everyone goes online at once and leaves a review, we'll just have a big clump of them in May/June 2018 and risk having no reviews at all for months or even years, and it makes people wonder if we're still "in business".

HERE IS WHAT I PROPOSE!

If you are willing to write a positive, 5 star review for our church, simply email me - [email protected] and I will set up a schedule of one reviewer per month, until I run out of names!

I will email you a reminder, links to where to post the reviews, and even a few prompts just in case you aren't sure what to write. This will only take about 5-10 minutes of your time but will be impact-ful, long lasting and free publicity for our church for years and years.

That is all!

(Also just in case you're thinking "who cares about online reviews??" As someone who has a 100% online business, I can honestly say that it's been my experience that positive online reviews drive more folks to my website than any paid ad! Even just leaving five stars and no written review improves google search ranking)

Thanks for your time! Ruth

Sign up and help Ruth and anyone with great ideas to connect or help please let me know. [email protected] God bless, Kathy.

6/3 - Beef Stew or Corned Beef Hash 6/10 - Canned Chicken 6/17 - Canned Tuna 6/24 - Canned Fruit

PANTRY HOURS: The first 4 Saturdays of each month from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.

BIKE MINISTRY: 2nd and 3rd Saturday of every month. 10:00-12:00 noon. LCR does not accept clothing donations: If you have clothing donations we

suggest Cocoa Beach Community Church Thrift Shop.

Laundry Ministry - You will notice that laundry small change re-ceptacles have been removed from the church narthex and fellow-ship hall. That is because of your generosity. We have five months of funds necessary to do the laundry of our pantry clients. We’re go-ing to take a break for a few months. Thanks for your generosity!

LCR is doing GREAT things! Thank you for your financial support now, but have you thought about leaving a legacy in your will after you leave this world? Contact your financial consultant or church office for ideas. If you would like Resurrection to be remem-

bered after you go to be with the Lord, be sure to name us in your will. Sadly, we’ve seen survi-vors not honor the known wishes of the de-ceased. Its hard to imagine, but it happens. Thank you!

Diamondback Terrapin Research In The Thousand Islands Underway Diamondback terrapin research in the Thousand Islands is underway (LCR is close

to the northern Thousand Islands). The Fish and Wildlife Research Institute, part

of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, recently began a dia-

mondback terrapin population assessment in the Thousand Islands, a known

hotspot for terrapins. Diamondback terrapins are the only North American tur-

tles that live exclusively in estuaries, a trait shared by few, if any, other turtles in

the world. Florida has five subspecies (Malaclemys terrapin), three of which oc-

cur only in Florida. This is a coastal turtle species found statewide in coastal

marshes, tidal creeks, mangroves and other brackish and estuarine habitats. Res-

idents and visitors are needed to reporting sightings and, if possible, to hold onto the adult terrapin if caught

in the yard or other property and contact researcher Traci Castellón (contact info below) who will send a lo-

cal biologist over to mark it, measure it, take some samples, then release it. They can be held in a bucket,

trash can, etc. with or without shallow water. They’re nearly impossible to catch when they’re in the water,

so the best way to catch them is when you find them on land. They could also use close-up photographs of

terrapins that can’t be caught (older ones, not hatchlings because they all look the same), and they’re also

able to use carcasses, so if you find dead terrapins (e.g., roadkill), please let them know about those too.

A female diamondback terrapin decided to lay her eggs on

Memorial Day at the home of Cocoa Beach waterfront resi-

dents Phil and Coleen Scarpa. After burying her eggs, the ter-

rapin was detained in a bucket for several minutes until biolo-

gist Erin Rowley arrived. After data collection and tagging was

complete, the terrapin was released back into the water.

A female diamond-back terrapin found in a Cocoa Beach family’s yard on Me-morial Day is aiding research efforts by the Florida Fish & Wildlife Research Institute.

Reminder: No Nitrogen Fertilizer from June 1 to September 30 There’s nothing fun about toxic algae, fish kills or dead zones. That’s why at least 50 east coast communities along the Indian River Lagoon—including Brevard, Indian River, Martin, St. Lucie and Volusia Counties and most of the cities therein—ban nitrogen fertilizer during the wet summer months. Check out the following:

• http://sfyl.ifas.ufl.edu/brevard/lawn-and-garden/fertilizer-ordinances/ - the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agri-cultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) website has details on local fertilizer or-dinances for unincorporated Brevard and the cities in Brevard • http://befloridiannow.org has lagoon-friendly tips and products

DUO (Do Unto Others) Fund Update

Look who I ran into at 84 Lumber in Rockledge, our friend Marty Burt. His

determination and will power along with your financial contributions to the

DUO Fund helped him to get off the street and back to a productive life.

Marty works overtime at 84 Lumber and is slowly but surely getting his life

back. He attends AA meetings each day and worship each weekend.

He asked me to thank the members of our congregation for their care and

generosity. He’s come a long way from sleeping on a bench out behind

the Cape Canaveral Library to his current situation. His dog, Buddy, who

lived on the street with him, is now under the foster care of a wonderful

veterinarian (see Buddy’s picture below). He looks so happy and healthy!

Despite what the cynics say, folks can change. Marty is living, breathing,

working proof of that!

If you would like to help us give more people a

chance to leave the street, pray about working as a

“case manager” for DUO. That’s the next step for

us: someone who has the heart and the time to do

the “leg work,” checking out stories and arranging

help. If you would like to serve as a case manager

just let me know. It will be the most meaningful

thing you’ve ever done. The gratitude from friends

like Marty (and Buddy) is worth more than gold! -

Pastor Jay
