Up until now children were always taught to keep themselves off the mobile phones. But this year was completely contradictory to this age old instruction. This transformation is due to corona virus. The cell phones proved to be sturdy bridge, between the students and the school. By the end of 20-20, everybody‟s smart phone had every possible video calling and photography app. The closed shutters of the school buildings did not stop the teachers from facilitating knowledge and education. The theme of this year was `The year of Relations‟ and rightly so, the teachers succeeded in creating, developing and strengthening the bond with the pupils. The teachers proved their mettle by finding out new and innovative ways to face the challenges of online teaching. The school too, endeavoured to provide the students education in such a way that the distance or virtual learning did not stand in the way of comprehension and acquisition of knowledge. Students were also given some interesting tasks to boost their interest in learning. Activities such as Khelotsav, Rakhi Making competition, Suryanamaskar competition and Yoga Day celebration encouraged the students to enhance interest in education. Along with them, the incorporation of parents in the activities like Toran Making and Salad Decoration competition added to the fun of these activities. The Essay competition proved to be a medium for parents to express their thoughts freely. The students were sitting at home throughout the year and hence it was understandable that they were

missing the school and their friends. Through the Anuual Social „Connect‟ the students got a chance to connect with their peers. The online teaching learning method provided an opportunity to use different media services. The outcome of this new knowledge was the science exhibition „Amalgam‟. While doing and managing all the above things parents‟ support, their creativity and help played an important role. All of us want for this pandemic to end. Hence we appeal everyone to wear masks, maintain social distancing, sanitize hands regularly and most importantly stay safe.

The school is ending under very different and atypical circumstances. It‟s been a year with many changes and these changes have become the `New normal‟. We stood strong and brave in the midst of a pandemic. We had school online, had virtual events and also, missed our friends. We have learned to be responsible, empathetic and safe. Our students have been exposed to many unique learning opportunities. The time, efforts and planning of all the online activities have given us joy. I hope all students remember them. There are good things waiting just around the corner. Keep striving to always do your best. Tomorrow can only be better than yesterday or today. Always make good choices, think before your speak and respect yourself and others. Treat everyone the way you want to be treated. I would like to appreciate my team which thrives on change, diversity, progress and will continue on the learning journey. Due to this we will see a further development and improvement. Let me express my gratitude to all families who worked closely and partnered with our staff to provide our students with opportunities to continue their distance learning in the comfort and safety of their homes. We truly could not have accomplished our task without the support and dedication of our parents. As a collaborative team we value the

importance of building strong relationships with home and school and we appreciate the support that we have received as we embarked on a new journey of distance learning. To end the year our teachers are engaged in the process of class building for next year. Take care and we look forward to the opportunity to be together again when school reopens. “One day you will tell your story of how you overcame, what you went through and it will be someone else‟s survival guide.”

School Days

When we say school days the picture we imagine is children running here and there, talking loudly, shouting, and making noise. But this year because of pandemic no one has visited the school. As we are missing our school, school must be missing us

too. All the classrooms, benches, blackboards, must be wondering where did everyone go? How come everything is so silent? They have the habit of such silence only for the month of April and May. But they know that in month of June the kids will be back and school will come to life again. I am missing all my teachers, friends and all the fun we have in the school. Also the yummy food we use to eat in Sr.K.G. I am missing my van uncle so much. He would give us party at the end of every term. But now I want to wake up early in the morning, get ready, wear uniform, reach school in our van and walk with my friends up to the classroom. I miss all those school days so much.

My passion- Swimming

Hello Friends! I am Ira Vineet Kulkarni. I want to share my experience about swimming through this article. I started to learn swimming at the age of 4. In the beginning, I was very scared of water, but later with the help of my swimming coach, I started to enjoy swimming. I learnt all the basic 4 strokes like Breast stroke, Back stroke, Freestyle and Butterfly in one year. Since I enjoyed swimming, my coach sir suggested that I should shift to competitive swimming and participate in swimming competitions. Competitive swimming is very difficult. We generally practice for 2 hours daily and before the competitions we practice for 4 hours. We have to do a lot of exercise to increase our stamina and to eat a balanced diet. My first swimming competition was in May, 2019 and was organized by Pune

District Association (PDA) at Tilak tank. I represented Pegasus Health Club in under 6 age group. I was very nervous since it was my first event. But I gave my best timing and also won a Bronze medal in Back stroke. My coach sir, my parents and everyone was very happy and proud of me as I had won a medal in my very first competition. After that, I have participated in many district and state level swimming competitions. I wish to represent my country at international swimming events. Ira Kulkarni Std. II Opal

Adenium The Desert Rose

Once, in the desert there lived two cactus. One‟s name was Peter and other‟s name was Sandy. They were brothers. One day one unknown bud

came near Sandy and Peter.

Sandy and Peter were very excited about this bud. They both gave water to that bud. After some days they saw that bud and got shock because it was the bud of Rose. When they knew that the bud was of rose then every day they would give water and food to that rose plant. Slowly that bud of

rose started become blooming.

One day some visitors visited to desert and they saw that flower. They appreciated about the beauty of flower. One tourist said, "You deserve to put in the city garden area. Because you are very beautiful. This desert is not suitable place for you and

here no one cares about your beauty.

Then that man was plucking up that flower of city rose. Sandy and peter stabbed him the thorns. The tourist took his hand back and went away

from there.

The City rose said to Peter and Sandy, "Why you are doing that?. I want to go in city garden area. I don‟t want to live with you and speak with you. I am not cactus, I am Rose. I look very beautiful than you. I don't want your friendship. My friends are city area

rose, not ugly cactus.

Then cactus said to City rose, " We are not your friends and you are not desert rose. Our desert rose is "Adenium". Our Adenium (The desert rose) doesn't have thorns like you and it has many colors. It can stay live in Desert. The blooms are long lasting and attractive to hummingbirds and pollinators such as bees and butterflies.

TOUR OF NORTH INDIA – EXPIERENCE IN GOLDEN TEMPLE

AMRITSAR.

I have gone to North India picnic with my mother and father. In this trip we had visited Amritsar Golden temple. This Gurudwara is known as Guru Granth Sahib. Today I am sharing a small incident happened with me in this Gurudwara. Before entering in golden temple, we purchased an orange color handkerchief to cover our hair. After removing our shoes, we washed our hands and legs. Then I prayed the God in the temple. After that we went to the Langer hall. I saw in that hall many Volunteers were working to serve the people. Then we sat in the Row. One volunteer came to serve us Langer. But he denied to serve me because my orange color handkerchief was slightly gone back. He asked me to cover my hair properly and I did it. Then I took my right hand ahead to take Roti.

But the volunteer denied again…… He asked me to took my both hands ahead to take Roti and again I did it. And he served me the Langer and I

had it happily……

Exciting Safari After LOCKDOWN 2020 Swara, Anu and Maya were packing bags. They were going for a safari in Sahyadri Tiger Reserve…

“Are we going to see tigers? I will take photos.” Maya asked. “And the tiger cubs are so cute! I can take a photo and draw a picture,” she exclaimed Swara chuckled, “Yes, that‟s true. But we are not going there for tigers only, other animals are also important. So, look out for birds too.” Anu was a bit scared, she asked – “Ok... ok… ok Swara tai but what will we do if a tiger or a bear jumps on our car?” Maya Laughed. “Anu why are you so scared always?” she asked still laughing. Anu was about to say something, but Swara spoke up. “Anu, you don‟t worry, everything will be fine. Actually, animals are afraid of us, so no worries.” Anu did not get it but she said „Yes‟. Next day, when all of them sat in the Jeep, dad‟s phone rang – trrringg –trrringg Anu – Dad!! Not now!! Dad – Shh... Shh... After the phone he said, “sorry... I will skip this safari I need to go for an emergency in our office.” Mom – And now ... I need to come with you… Remember, our office is the same? Dad – “mhhh. I know what to do! One of the forest officers‟ is my friend so?” Suddenly they heard a voice – “Hey there, going for a Safari?” “Amit, where were you, we need help” Dad asked curiously. Maya – “Swaratai, who is he?” she whispered.

39

Swara – “Umm... don‟t know, must be dad‟s friend ... “she replied Anu - “Or a Stranger” Swara and Maya laughed. Anu said – come on!! I am being serious Mom – See this is Amit Uncle “Hello” the sisters said eagerly. Amit Uncle – I see you must be Swara, Anu and Maya. I have heard so much about you. I am Amit Uncle and I am one of the forest officers. And you guys, don‟t worry you can go to work. I will handle the children. Dad – Oh, thank you so much. Dad and mom went to work and the girls went to Amit Uncle‟s Jeep.

They all had big sacks filled with Binoculars , 6 Water Bottles,Scrap Book Whistle , Torch, Camera They all were so surprised because they saw all the endangered species and beautiful creatures like butterflies, serpent eagle, spotted deer, tigers etc. All of them were busy talking about their wonderful time in the jungle. But suddenly they heard a voice rrrrmmmmmm... rrr...

And the Jeep went silent, it stopped!!! Maya – Uncle, uncle... what is wrong with the Jeep, can we fix it? Amit Uncle – Oh! Don‟t worry, we will call the Sahyadri rescue team.

Just a minute, I will call them… It was sunset and everything was getting quieter... And suddenly they all were astonished to hear the hoots of an owl!! They even saw the silent movement of barking dear past them…

Anu went near Swara and Maya‟s side. She wanted to tell them that she was feeling scared, but they would have laughed. When Amit Uncle called the team, the phone would say “you are out of connectivity”. Then anu had an idea “What about the phone mom gave us?” Maya quickly hugged Anu and said – “You are a genius Anu!!!”.

Swara tried to call mom and dad but the same thing happened. Swara – What shall we do now? Driver - 0h Mhhh. I know! Let‟s just go away running.

Amit Uncle was disappointed by the reply, he said “no that‟s a rule if we do not follow then we get punished.” Maya – Wait Anu, don‟t we have two bright flashlights? Anu – Oh! I completely forgot, lets switch them on Swara – Just a minute, even I have a loud whistle. You two point the flashlight in the air, while I will blow the whistle Their minds began to work. Amit uncle thought that they were cleverer than himself. And actually, the idea worked! All of them saw a faint light coming towards them as it was getting darker, they could not see who it was. At last, when the figure came near, they saw who it was, the rescue team and their parents!!! Anu immediately hugged mum as the others joined. The forest department appreciated the sisters, You girls are

40

very brave I see. I think you should be little officers! Swara laughed happily while the others joined her. Next day when the bell rang Anu went to open the door. Amit uncle came in… “Hello uncle” Maya greeted him happily. Amit uncle grinned and said “Now I don‟t know your answer, but want to go for a safari from my jeep?” The sisters were surprised, they stared at each other and exclaimed “YES!!” Swara Chandorkar Std. GOA! My favorite place Goa is my favourite place for a vacation. When you think of Goa what comes to your mind? For me, the best thing about Goa is the beach and the sunset. I love to play in the waves on the beach and can spend the whole day there. Sometimes I build a sandcastle. I collect lots of shells and stones on the beach. Now I have a very big shell collection at home. I am learning to take photographs of the beautiful sunsets. I like eating Goan food especially fish fry and caramel pudding. Goa is a ten-hour long drive from Pune. Many people might be bored by the long journey, but we enjoy driving through the different states of Maharashtra, Karnataka and Goa. We like to watch the farms, rivers, hills, and forests on the way. Goa is also my family„s favourite holiday place. We

have been to Goa many times and I have many happy memories of our trips.

River gets spotless One day, in a small village on the banks of river Ganga, lived a young boy named Abhay. He loved to keep his surroundings clean always. After 20 years, he moved to the city. One day, his parents called Abhay and asked that can he come to the village and stay with them for 10 Days. Abhay said, “I will come tomorrow by train”. Abhay returned to the village and said, “How the village has become very unclean! And look, the river is so dirty”. With making his face ugly, he went to his home. His mother was about to cry as Abhay had come back to the village after five years. As soon as he entered the home, she started crying and hugged him. Then, he touched his father‟s and mother‟s feet and asked his parents how are they? They said, “we are fine”. They talked for a very long time. After that he said to his parents, “Mom and Dad, when I entered the village, I saw the riverside, many people have thrown plastic. Who looks after the riverside maintenance?”. They informed him that no one looks after the riverside, nobody maintains it. Abhay told his parents that since I will be here for ten days, I will clean the whole riverside - that‟s a promise! His parents had a happy and relieved face. The next day he put the yellow gloves, big rain boots and went to the riverside.

41

When Abhay started cleaning, villagers started laughing at him. Still, Abhay decided to Ignore them and continue his work with dedication. Abhay knew that what he was doing was correct and he has to complete it. Abhay cleaned some of the portion. But when he was cleaning there was a lot of dirty smell. When he returned home, Abhay knew that he needed help so he called his friends from the city and asked them to come to the village and help him by catching the night train. Some of them said, “Abhay, we won‟t come since there are no restaurant, cars and proper toilets.” But some of them agreed to go to Abhay‟s village. Now, Abhay had some hope. They all reached the village at 4.00 AM and the next day they started their mission. They almost cleaned the half portion of the riverside. They were happy but knew that their goal was not completed. The next day they decided to use their full energy. They completed their work by 11.55 PM at night, since they had decided to complete the goal. They were so tired that they slept there only. By morning, they were awake . They were extremely happy and Abhay called his parents to see what they had done. One by one, all the villagers saw and they were amazed to see it, they asked his parents that who had done it? They told them proudly that their son, Abhay and his friends had cleaned the riverside. They decided to thank Abhay and his friends for doing a great job. They apologized first and then thanked Abhay next day. Abhay

would finally enjoy his vacation with a happy smile and with no tension. Moral – Never throw garbage and food at riverside and beaches. It makes the water unclean. This leads to water pollution. Also we should never do something that will lead to any kind of pollution.

School from Home All of us know that in the Covid – 19 pandemic we were not able to go to our school. We were worried that how would we attend our school. But our headmistress ma‟am and all the teachers made it possible and our online school was very successful. Our online school started during mid June on zoom platform. The zoom meeting was like our classroom and the windows of the zoom meeting were like our benches. Teacher taught us everything by PPT‟s. Sometimes due to network issue we used to get disconnected. Also sometimes the teacher used to get disconnected and we had fun like a free time till the time teacher joins back. Soon it was teachers‟ day. Every year on teachers‟ day all the 4th standard students used to go and teach the standard 3 students. But at this time due to Covid, this was not possible. Instead of that we had fun chat with Manisha madam for a long time. We often didn‟t get such chance to chat with the teacher. Then it was exam time. This year we didn‟t have normal exams. We had

online exams. Teacher prepared us for it using mock exams. We had group projects through online presentations. It taught us presentation skills. Days passed, weeks passed, months passed and finally it was time for our annual social. But again we thought how would it be possible for us to have online Annual social? And again our teachers made it possible. We recorded the videos of our dances, skits and anchoring and sent it to our class teachers. The teacher gave the recorded videos to our photographer sir. He edited those videos. And on the day of Annual social the final video was displayed. Now it was time for night out. And to our surprise we had online night out. In the night out Rajkumar sir told us the stories of Shivaji Maharaj. We also had online field trips, where teacher went and recorded interesting places like butterfly garden and papar factory. And at last it was farewell time. The online farewell was really good. Teacher showed us a beautiful video of birds. We enjoyed the virtual year. But all of us hope that the school will start really soon. Because, we are missing our school, friends and our teachers. Thank you. Shrimayi Beri

The Magical Pencil

Once upon a time there lived a boy named Rahul with his parents. They were very poor. Rahul loved drawing. As he was poor, he didn't go to school.

He would draw with a stick or chalks on the soil and walls. One day he was walking on the road and suddenly an old man appeared in front of Rahul and gave him a pencil saying, "This is a Magical pencil. When you need something, draw it with this pencil and the drawing will become real thing." Saying this the old man disappeared. Rahul wanted to test the pencil so he drew a mango and the mango became real ! After that he pencilled new clothes , delicious meal and a house for his family. Then he decided to draw things to help others. Days passed by. The king came to know about the magical pencil. He called Rahul to his palace and asked him to draw a tree which will bear golden mangoes. Rahul sketched the tree on the paper but the tree disappeared. The King ordered Rahul to give him the pencil. The king himself drafted the tree, but still it disappeared. Then the king ordered Rahul to draw again. But Rahul remembered the face of the old man and drawn his face. As soon as he finished drawing the old man appeared and explained the king, " I have given this pencil to Rahul for helping poor people. You don't need anything, so pencil will not draw for you." Saying this the old man again disappeared. The king realized his mistake and rewarded Rahul for his great deed. Moral : - Always help the poor and never be so greedy. Travel Blog Places visited Vadodara,

Ahmedabad Gujarat Dear Friends and Teachers, Today I will tell you about my winter vacation in 2019 December. In that vacation we planned a trip to Gujarat. It was the best trip I ever had! We left from Pune on 24 Dec and went to Bombay by the Intercity express. We ate snacks at a local restaurant and waited for our train at Bombay or Mumbai Central. When our train arrived, we got into our compartment. We also met my Computer Teacher, Sushma ma‟am. We reached Vadodara at about 5:15 am. We went to our hotel and rested for a while, had breakfast and left to see the city. First, we went to the Palace of the last ruler of the city, Sayajirao Gaikwad. The palace is known as Laxmi Vilas palace. It was a pretty nice palace. Next, we went to the Statue of Unity. It was too good an experience to see that statue. The light and sound show at the statue was the best piece of the tour of Vadodara. Finally, we returned to our hotel, had dinner and slept. The next day, we went to see the Amul factory at Anand. At night we caught double-decker express to Ahmedabad. There our hotel was the house of MG i.e, Mangaldas Giridhardas. In Ahmedabad, we saw Manek Chowk, ate pizza at Joshuben Pizza, went to visit Rani Di Wav, Indian Space Research Organization, National Institute of Design [NID] Ahmedabad, Centre for Environmental Planning and

Technology [CEPT] and Induben Khakrawala. We caught our Duronto train back to Pune and we reached here at early morning. Piyushi Warudkar Std. IV – Diamond

The Morning Magic

As the sun rises A new day starts, Some queer little noises And a dog bark. The chirping of the birds And hovering of bees, That beautiful view of sun Upon the seas. Glory of Gem lost in time

I had been to Miraj to visit my grandparents during Diwali vacation. On 19th November 2020, me, my mother, father and my grandfather travelled together from Miraj to Khidrapur to pay a visit to the famous and ancient Shiva temple at Khidrapur. Khidrapur is about 35 km from Miraj and it is situated near the Maharashtra- Karnatak border in Kolhapur district. It took us about 1 hr 30 min to reach there. A famous

religious place, Narsoba wadi is just about 17 km away from Khidrapur. The Krishna river flows in vicinity of the temple. The kopeshwar temple was built in the 12th century by the Shilahara King Gandaraditya who ruled between 1109 and 1178 CE. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva. In the interior we first see Vishnu { Dhopeshwar} and Shiva both in the form of Shivalingas facing north. But as usually seen in Shiva temples, Lord Shiva‟s mount is not to be seen seated before Lord Shiva; instead he has a separate Mandir dedicated to him in the temple complex. It is believed that Daksha, who did not like his youngest daughter Sati marrying Lord Shiva, conducted a Yagna to which he did not invite the couple. Sati visited her father‟s house on Shiva‟s Nandi to confront her father. Dakhsa insulted her in front of the guests present at the Yagna. Unable to bear any further insults, Sati jumped in the fire of Yagna and immolated herself. When Lord Shiva came to know about it he was infuriated. He punished Daksha by severing his head. Lord Vishnu pacified Shiva whereupon he restored Daksha‟s head but with a goat‟s head. The furious Shiva was brought to this place by Lord Vishnu to calm him down. Hence the temple got its unusual name as Kopeshwar (wrathful god). This explains as to why Lord Vishnu is in the temple in the form of a linga along with Shivling and why Nandi is not seen sitting before lord Shiva in this temple as Sati rode on Nandi while visiting her parent‟s home. When we enter the Svarga Mandapa, it is open to the sky with a circular

45

opening. Looking at the sky one gets mesmerised and gets a feeling of looking at the heavens, justifies the name Svarga Mandapa. At the periphery of the Svarga Mandapa we can see beautifully carved idols of Lord Ganesh, Karthikeya swami, Lord Kubera, Lord Yamraj, Lord Indra, etc. along with their vehicles- Mouse, peacock, elephant etc. In the centre we can see the Lord Shiva Kopeshwar shivling situated in the Garbha Gruha & towards right hand on the side wall we can see the beautifully carved idol of Lord Vishnu. . A stone pedestal mounted on the east of the temple's southern door has a carved inscription in Sanskrit, written in Devnagari script . It mentions that the temple was renovated in 1136 by Raj Singhadev of Yadav dynasty. The Kopeshwar temple is famous for its beautiful carvings. I saw the famous story of the cranes and the tortoise and the monkey and the alligator from the Panchatantra carved on one of the poles in the Sabhamandapa. I hope the temple will regain its glory in the future and will be as glorious as it was glorious in ancient times. I hope that people will visit this glorious temple and admire and enjoy its beauty as I did this Diwali vacation.

My visit to Rutuparna Farm Me and my family went to Rutuparna Farm on 27 Dec 2020. We were originally going to Mumbai. But

because of COVID-19 restrictions, we had to cancel it. Rutuparna farm is situated in Mulshi. It is situated in a valley. I was surprised when they gave us three glasses of welcome drink. I enjoyed a nature walk in the evening. I saw villages and farms. They served Maharashtrian snacks and thali for lunch and dinner. And then, at night, I was surprised because they asked me to cut their Christmas cake! It was wonderful. The next day, we went on a road trip and saw Mulshi Dam. I also saw a nursery and drank flavoured milk. This was followed by another nature walk, where we saw a greenhouse, chickens and buffaloes. I ate a light dinner and went back home happily the next day.

Travelogue on Pavan Khind Resort

Two years back, since our Diwali holidays, my family was planning to go on a vacation. After a few discussions

46

we decided to go to Pawan Khind Resort.

It is in Amba Ghat, Kolhapur district in Maharashtra. It was a eco- friendly Resort. The rooms in the Resort were spacious. The beds were comfortable. The rooms had all the basic amenities that were needed by the tourists. The rooms had spacious porch with swings and campfire arrangements. The Resort had to big lawns and one of the lawn had a play park. The resort also had a shop to buy products made in the Resort near the dining area. The tea area my favorite food, fresh milk. The food in the Resort was very delicious and at the same time healthy and scrumptious as well. The Resort had a travelling arrangement which was a Jeep. The Jeep had a facility for people to sit on the top of the vehicle. It had a shade and also some comfortable sitting arrangement. On the first day, when we arrived at the Resort we went to the backwater of a Reservoir and to a Jungle trail. On the second day, we went to the actual Khind, where we climbed down inside the trench with a ladder. The Khind has a history behind it. In this Khind, Baji Prabhu Deshpande, a sardar of Shivaji Maharaj sacrificed his for Swaraj while fighting against Siddhi Johar. On that day we also went in a jungle to have a Barbeque lunch. After we returned in the evening, we did swimming into the pool into the resort. The resort also had a Karaoke facility. Me, my mother, and my father tried our hands on singing with the Karaoke.

The trip was so… much fun!! Mrunmayee Vidwans Std.IV- Flying Fish

Giant Squirrel

(First Prize Winning Essay)

Giant Squirrels are my favourite animals. First, I did not know what was one... But once, when my family went to Mahabaleshwar, I saw many Giant Squirrels. Near the resort in which me and my family lived, I was astonished to see the beautiful squirrel sitting on a tree! I told my parents about what I saw. That time I was only 4 years old. Then my parents told me what is a Giant Squirrel, they also told me that we call Giant squirrel as Shekru in Marathi. And after a few days, we had a project in school, plus we had to write about Giant Squirrels only! I was so excited!

Giant squirrel is Maharashtra's state animal. The zoological name of a Giant squirrel is 'Ratufa Indica Indica Erxleben'. Giant Squirrels are very shy animals. The tail of a Giant squirrel is very long... It has faint white colour. One Giant squirrel can create at least 7 nests in breeding season. The breeding season can be March to April or September to October.

Giant Squirrels prefer to live in dense forests and on tall trees.

Why do Giant Squirrels build 7 nests?

- Giant Squirrels build 7 nests so they can hide from their predators.

Giant Squirrels are mainly found in - (where I saw)

47

1. Bhimashankar

2. Mahabaleshwar

3. Talkat forest (near Tillari forest) (Sindudurg, Dodamarg)

4. Radhanagri forest (I heard calls)

5. And mainly in the Western Ghats.

And because of deforestation, the giant squirrels' habitat is being destroyed. So, we must not cut the trees if we want to save the giant squirrels.

How was that !!! There was a sudden entry of the virus in our lives and the journey of an "encounter towards the mystery began." Everything went on standby. Uncertainty was at its peak. Nobody knew what to do. Parents were worried about the education of their kids. Kids were zapped by the situation they were into. No studies, no classes, no extra curriculum. When life came to standstill and most of the questions were left on time to come…. The question which was paramount in our lives was answered on time. "The classes of the students will commence on time with the same level of efficiency, zeal and commitment." Keeping the families and the love ones behind in such crisis situation. The teachers walked into their workplaces just to ensure that

every student undergoes his / her classes. Gadgets were procured, systems were put in place. Adequate and ongoing training was imparted. And the day came when the systems were logged in and the class teacher's said, "Good morning all and our Dear Students Welcome to the New Normal Online Class". How Was That !!! - I say it was Superb, Brilliant & Professional. All the Teachers & Manjusha Ma'am was involved in conducting various activities for kids. Not only during the academic year but throughout the vacation period kids were encouraged to undergo various skills and Teachers ensured that kids would utilized this time wisely. To enhance and intensify the level and quality of online teaching, under the guidance of Manjusha Ma'am - adequate training material, AV clips, links and e-books were shared. Regular assignments via G - form were given to get the hand's on experience for exams. Along with the assignments the progress of the students were monitored with appropriate CW - HW. In „3, Zakia Mansion‟ – an

English novel written by Gauri

Deshpande, I read a very disturbing

sentence – “If parents leave their

children, they are called „orphans‟.

But if the children leave their old,

helpless parents alone, then what such

parents are called ?”

Even if we look around us,

many lonely eyes are looking for their

near and dear ones.

I treasure a special relation

with these lonely parents. I cherish a

special relation with these parents

who are leading life of childless

parents though they have spent most

83

part of their life, energy and money

for the betterment of their children.

These old people are suffering

from „Empty Nest Syndrome‟. This

syndrome is a feeling of loneliness,

parents feel, when their children leave

the house for work, mostly aboard.

A sense of loss, rejection,

stress, anxiety are with which these

old people live. They lead a life

without hope and aim.

It was my desire to be with my

parents. But the sudden loss of my

parents ended my childhood. Losing

my parents was probably the hardest

and deepest blow in my life. When

you lose parents , the sadness doesn‟t

go away, it just changes. It hits you

side ways sometimes instead of

headon.

So, I gathered my full strength

decided to become daughter of those

lonely, departed parents.

In the beginning, I helped them

by buying grocery, medicines or

helping them with bank transactions.

But soon I realized that these things

can be done online or with the help of

their maids also. These parents want

human touch, communication,

sharing their thoughts with someone.

I came to know their need and

became a patient listener.

This give me a valuable

opportunity to walk into different

families everyday. I became a family

member every home I visited. It was

a blessing and unexpected gift.

After losing my parents, I got

so many new families, new parents

and warm, welcoming homes away

from own home.

These lonely old people suffer

so many problems like senile

dementia, intolerance to changes,

disorientation, insomnia, failure of

judgement are very few in the long

list.

So, I started some outdoor

activities to boost their mental and

physical health. In the beginning, it

was not easy to unite and make a

homogeneous group of senior citizens

belonging to different social status.

But with my perseverance they could

get together to form a close-knitted

group.

Encouraging these parents to

adopt new technology in a another

challenge. I have to explain its

advantages and how close they can be

with their children using internet.

Some children of those parents

agreed to communicate with parents

at least once a week. But

unfortunately some children settled

abroad bluntly denied to share time

with parents giving lame excuses like

different time zone, busy schedule,

personal reasons etc.

Eventually, to cope up with

such sad situations, I started giving

more time, idea and energy.

Now, the biggest challenge was

to uplift morale of these senior

citizens. Then a social worker friend

of mine came up with a brilliant idea.

She asked me to take these senior

citizens to visit an orphanage nearby.

This was a perfect link between two

84

needful groups. Parents want

someone to love and the children also

in the need of love, care from some

elderly people.

This idea worked miraculously.

Me and my social worker friend

finally reached to a conclusion – “An

idea that is developed and put into

action is developed and put into

action is more important than an idea

that exists only as an idea.”

Those lonely parents now

understood the meaning of gratitude.

Gratitude is a powerful catalyst for

happiness. Those lonely parents now

started investing their time, money

and energy in these orphan children.

This was a win-win situation.

Within a span of three to four months,

we noticed a positive change in the

physiological and psychological

change in these senior citizens.

Every weekend‟s meeting to

the orphanage was just like oxygen

for them. These parents started going

out and visiting malls for buying

clothes, toys, stationary items for

children. They developed confidence

to go out and mix with people.

Some senior citizens started

teaching subjects like Mathematics,

Science, English, Sanskrit, Marathi to

these orphan children. As a teacher I

got immense satisfaction in uniting

these two groups.

Some grandmother think that it

is their responsibility to teach

Abhang, Ramraksha, Manache Shlok,

Bhagvadgita to these children.

Actually these grandmothers wanted

to include these religious and cultural

values in their own grandchildren, but

the thousands of kilometers between

two geographical places, were not

allowing them to do so.

In near future, me and my

friend are planning to start a plant

nursery to cultivate some vegetables

and fruits. During the lockdown

period, these essentials have proved

their importance in everybody‟s life.

According to the doctors, there

are lot of benefits of gardening. Good

exercise, lower cortisal levels in

blood, lower risk of dementia, less

risk of stroke are few to mention.

In this way, I treasured a

relation with these senior citizens and

now with the orphan children. I

treasured this relation as it made me a

very blessed and content person.

Now, this relation is my need,

not their. I owe it all to my faith in

the teaching of my parents.

Helping someone get through a

hard time in their life can be

humbling as well as calling forth

empathy and sympathy.

Being a Science teacher, I

researched about the Science behind

the virtue of helping others.

„Endorphin‟ – a wonderful brain

chemical that gets produced in human

brain gives a positive feeling in us.

Leaving behind this research

and Science, what I feel is – „Relation

with senior citizens and orphan

children give me incalculable joy in

my life, that no Science, no gadget,

85

no person, no language can ever

measure.‟

„So Many Gods, So Many

Creeds,

So Many Paths that wind and

wind,

Just the Art of Being Kind

Is all the Sad World Needs.‟
