Reflection

The following reflection is referred to the texts “The English language” and “Language in society”, which have a particular importance on the course “lexical analysis” and our major.

The texts mentioned above, have an importance for us, as students of a foreign language (English in this case), because these texts tell us about the history of the language, the tribes who brought the language, some lexical features, definitions about language interaction.

Firstly, Language is used by people in a certain location, social class or cultures; consequently, languages may be affected by variations such as dialects or accents. This is the case of English language, which is spoken in various places, and which contains dialects and accents in different regional areas.

Secondly, Dialects are different in pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary accordingly to the place where is spoken. Therefore it’s important to understand that language and dialects are social concept rather than grammatical, as well as another concepts that are explained in the text such as style and register, which depend on the situation and people we are talking to , at the moment of speaking. Finally, It’s important to keep in mind these linguistic concepts, because they are related to the language that we are learning also being able to distinguish them in order to upgrade our knowledge. Also we think that learning English as a second language is not only grammar or phonetics, but also how the language is affected within a society and how it is changing through the time; besides we have to know the history of the language, its participants in this history, the actors that bring the language to the British Isles and how this language called English was expanded then to the whole world. We need to know all this before being teachers, so in this case the texts mentioned above have an importance for our major and for the course, as we are learning them during this semester and them will helps us to broad our knowledge about this topic.
