Reflection: Jesus came among us not as an authorised teacher of the Law, like the scribes and Pharisees, nor as a priest of the temple but as a prophet. In awe at his preaching and his miraculous deeds, some of the people of his day were moved to exclaim: A great prophet has risen among us; God has visited his people(Lk 7:16). Sadly this was not how he was received in his hometown of Nazareth. Rejected by his townspeople, Jesus reminded them that no prophet is ever accepted in his home country. Contrary to popular belief, a prophet is not essentially one who foretells what is to come but a man or a woman who, acutely aware of the significance of present events, is moved to draw attention to their probable, perhaps disturbing, future consequences. At the same time as we try to identify todays prophetic figures, we need to remind ourselves that there is a prophetic dimension to the vocation of all Christians. It is exercised not in magisterial pronouncements on our part but in the way we live our daily lives. Prayer for Rain -

We pray for the land

we hear the promise you have spoken in Isaiah

of the refreshment of the creation;

of water in the desert,

of renewal for the land,

of hope, of life.

We name our simple need – rain for our thirsty

land.

Our tanks and dams are nearly empty,

like our hopes for this season.

Please, loving God, bring us rain

to renew the ground, to replenish our dams,

to bring some chance of feed,

to bring the possibility of some reward

to those who have toiled so hard.

We turn to you in faith and hope.

We pray for our community

We pray for all those whose lives

are under the shadow of drought.

We think first of those who work with the land,

for farmers and their families,

for those who rely upon the land for their life and

relationships.

We pray for contractors, merchants and truck

drivers,

for rural counsellors and support workers,

for all our rural community.

May the refreshment of your Spirit,

present in miraculous and truly human ways,

be with all of us as we move forward into the days

ahead.

We pray, too, for justice;

for fair prices for our stock and our wool and our

crops.

We pray for governments, banks and corporations

to be driven by the wisdom

of community, justice and compassion

not simply the folly of the dollar and the bottom

line.

We pray for each other,

keep us aware of the needs of those around us:

for those who are struggling,

who are grieving,

who are ill, who are dying.

Restore those who are far from you

with the knowledge that they are loved and valued.

Give them not just a sense of renewal,

but a sense of hope and purpose for lives

that are finding the journey hard.

Let us see the miracle of healing

in relationships,

in lives,

in communities,

where there is illness

and hope is far away.

Keep us always conscious of the task we have

in ministry and mission in your world.

We offer all these prayers in the name of Jesus.

Amen.

Introduction

Who really wants to be called upon to change, let alone promote it in others? The prophets surely

didn’t, and Jesus early on heard the reaction to his sermon among his own people. Today’s readings

remind us that our faith is grounded in God’s word. That always involves the call to be and live differently. Just as God’s love sustained others, we are equipped with spiritual gifts, especially love, to respond to that

same call.

First Reading

Jeremiah 1:4-5, 17-19

Jeremiah, called to prophecy, will face resistance

Responsorial Psalm

I will sing of your salvation.

Second Reading

Corinthians 12:31

Love is the greatest of all gifts

ALLELUIA! ALLELUIA! The Lord sent me to bring Good News to the poor

And freedom to prisoners.

ALLELUIA!

Gospel Luke 4:21-30

Jesus announces his ministry to those considered outsiders

Prayers of the Faithful

For all who make decisions that affect the welfare of others. May they follow God’s will and seek the good of all people, we pray:

For our Australia and its people in this time of drought, for those on farms and in rural areas deprived of harvests and livestock, livelihood and hope. May God send rain to water the earth and help those in need, we pray:

For agencies and individuals working to support those affected by drought. May their endeavours be blessed and their efforts richly rewarded, we pray:

For those organisations aimed at the conservation and restoration of the natural environment. May they inspire all people to treat God’s creation with respect and reverence and to use the resources of the earth wisely, we pray:

For Church leaders and all who minister in the name of Christ. May they hear the word of God and bring it to birth in our waiting world, we pray.

Let us pray together....

Loving God, have mercy on your people in their need and hear the prayers we offer with sincere

and contrite hearts. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen
