Dear Member,

The monsoons are finally here! This season is filled with fun, frolic and the enjoyment of getting drenched in the rains. The Club is ever ready to greet the monsoons in style. Enjoy our piping hot dishes, created only keeping the rains in mind. Cosy classics such as the delicious homemade puddings and oriental fare of hot and nourishing soups are on the menu. Also, look forward to our delicious vegetarian Wo Chi Su food festival.

Keep kids busy on rainy days with our tennis classes and tennis camps. Yes, the Tennis Academy at The Club is going strong, even through the rain! While kids are busy, take some time out to relax your senses. According to Ayurveda, monsoon is the best time for the body to rejuvenate. So why not make a trip down to the Antara Spa and Krimson Salon for a day of relaxation and reinvigoration.

We are also pleased to re-introduce to you our iconic Westburry’s bar. Enjoy monsoon afternoons here with some delicious hot snacks, or a rainy evening with friends, sipping on their delicious cocktails. It is truly such a joy to be unperturbed indoors while its pouring out, and Westburry’s provides this very warmth and comfort.

Also, don’t forget to log on to our new and improved website, www.theclubmumbai.com. Find us on Facebook and Instagram at The Club Mumbai and hashtag at #theclubmumbai. Have a great monsoon season and the warmest regards from The Club.

MY STORY

The Club member, Arunaraje Patil, tells us about how she got into films and her new film clarifying some misconceptions about autism.

UNDERSTANDINGTHE UNFAMILIAR

Kettering Hospital in New York, we could not save her. This was followed by the breakup of my marriage and five years later I found myself a single mother bringing up our son.

I started my film production company overnight, assembling the name of my company with the initial letters of my two children; ‘Gaa’ from Gaagi and ‘hi’ Hith, calling the company Gaahimedia. I directed and edited feature films, doing whatever came my way and choosing those that allowed me a certain creative freedom. I continued to make documentaries and for the past fifteen years I got associated with a school for special needs, S.P.J. Sadhana School.

I found that there was very little awareness about autism and very few understood the

difference between mental illnesses, retardation and a disability like autism. It is unimaginably traumatic for both the child and the parents to be in a society that shuns and alienates them with no hope of things getting better. While making another film for their sister concern, an NGO, I felt an urgency to make a film for creating awareness and ideated making a film on

the autistic. So was born Behind the Glass Wall, which has won three awards in the United States and a National Award this year.

Autism is a lifelong neurological disorder and the autism spectrum is mild to severe depending on the kind of traits an autistic person might have. Working with them, I discovered that they are hugely gifted and truly deserve a chance to be accepted in society. In my interactions with the autistic and their families, I realised that if there is no early intervention, ideally by the age of two years, it becomes a very steep climb for teachers to train them and even more challenging for parents to manage them as they grow older.

The film showcases what is possible for people with autism. Many of the students who have come out of S.P.J. Sadhana School and are employed in the NGO, Shraddha, are a live demonstration of what is possible and how they can be integrated in society.

Since childhood, I was crazy about movies. However, as girls from ‘good’ families did not get into the movie industry about

50 years ago, I chose to go for medicine. I was a topper in my studies and walked into Grant Medical College on merit. I was there for two years but I was not happy. My mother took me out of GMC and put me in the Film Institute of India at Pune. I was the first trained girl technician to come out of FTII in 1969 with a Gold Medal in Editing. I fell in love while at the Institute and got married just before passing out.

My husband and I made a variety of films together, advertising shorts, corporate films, documentaries and features. We lost our nine-year-old daughter to cancer and though we did everything we could do for her, including a stint at Memorial Sloan-

COVER STORY

Re-introducing The Club’s winning bar, Westburry’s, in all its glory!

Text by Trishala Patel

WESTBURRY’SWINNING

the bar, and enjoy the overall mood. The bar unit, itself, serves a double purpose as both a fully equipped, functional bar and a stunning centrepiece that pulls the entire room together.

Westburry’s, despite its vintage interiors, is also perfect for a family setting. Unwinding here with your loved ones is a real treat, with its great ambience, quiet atmosphere and delicious food and drinks for every palate. The dim lights give it a cosy, intimate feel, also perfect for a romantic evening, or even simply conducting a meaningful conversation with a loved one. However, the old-school English elegance of the sophisticated Westburry’s also caters to formal meetings or business drinks and dinners.

The moment you step into The Club’s beautiful Westburry’s bar, you are transported to a far more elegant time; a

Golden Age long past, the type of style and panache that F. Scott Fitzgerald raved about in his novels. The spirit of Westburry’s is definitely a nostalgic one, but it also entertains a modern sensibility. It has an air of luxury, but isn’t overpowering, creating the perfect balance between refinement and casual charm. It is trimmed with beautiful vintage English and Irish posters and also houses a real gun, within a case, of course. The room is perfectly sized; not too large so as to overawe guests but not too small, either. The size is a comfortable one, where guests have their own space at their tables, but can also overlook the rest of

Apart from this refinement and sophistication, Westburry’s has a light-hearted side as well. It has happy hours everyday, and also hosts a variety of themed nights. For example, you can enjoy the leading comedians of the city on Westburry’s Stand-Up Comedy Nite, over your favourite beer or wine. Westburry’s is also a sport-junkie’s Mecca, where one can enjoy the latest matches and tournaments on the big-screen. Live DJ nights and karaoke nights are a lot of fun, and bring about a sense of communion and camaraderie amongst the members. Finally, ladies’ nights here are also a great hit!

The Westburry’s bar is truly for everyone, whether you prefer an upbeat event, or a quiet intimate night with friend’s or

family, you can enjoy the bar in whichever mood you are in. The bar food is fabulous, but you may also order in from other restaurants at The Club, including the iconic Oriental Wok right next door. The drinks demonstrate an authentic take by Westburry’s great bartenders, who personalise classic cocktails to your tailoring and give them the unique Westburry’s flavour. A must-try is definitely the tamarind Bloody Mary. This bar is truly the epitome of refined class that meets a relaxed casual environment. There is something for everybody here and the possibilities for enjoyment are truly without boundary.

Anada Wine Club was founded in 2004 by Mr Dinesh Khanna and Mr Ranjan Kapur. The Wine Club

aims to promote and encourage wine appreciation in environments that are conducive to wine drinking. Anada Wine Club is a true community of likeminded individuals; its members increase the knowledge on appreciation of wines, whether beginners or passionate wine enthusiasts.

Over the years, Anada Wine Club has proven itself as a one-of-its-kind institution for wine aficionados. This is reflected through the calibre of wine it introduces to the members. Here are some new, delicious and sophisticated wines that will be served at The Club.

Rhythm Strawberry WineCelebrating the tropical nature of the Indian subcontinent, Rhythm Winery of Pune crafts fruit wines by procuring fruits from the regions of India that they are best grown in.

When orchard fresh strawberries are blended with grapes, a true treat to your taste buds, the Rhythm Strawberry Wine is created. The fruit is procured from the strawberry orchards in Mahabaleshwar, lying in the Western Ghats of India. Ripe strawberries are plucked during

the winter seasons in the months of December to March. The two varieties of strawberries that give the wine its tangy-sweet taste include the Sweet Charlie and Kamaroza. It has a striking pinkish red colour which marvellously complements sundowners and day parties. Splashes of mouth-watering and sweet berry sensations explode throughout every sip of the Rhythm Strawberry. This makes it an absolute favourite amongst youngsters and ladies. Its semi-sweet nature is palatable to the Indian taste buds.

Being a light bodied, fresh wine it can be enjoyed as a standalone drink and it can also be paired with sweet treats. It goes especially well with pound cakes, muffins and milk chocolates. This wine is at its best when served chilled at temperatures between 6°C to 8°C, preferably in a champagne flute. Grover La RéserveThe Grover La Réserve is a delicious, complex blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz grape varieties. It has wone a variety of awards, including the Bronze at the Hong Kong International Wine & Spirit Competition 2014, Bronze at Decanter Asia Wine Awards 2013 and Bronze at the Hongkong International Wine & Spirit Competition 2013. It boasts a rich, deep garnet purple colour. The aroma is a powerful bouquet of

luscious ripe red and black fruits with an exquisite hint of spice. This full bodied wine combines grace and splendour on the palate, the tannins are smooth and flavours intense with chocolate, coffee beans and vanilla. It has been aged for a minimum of six months in French oak barrels. It pairs perfectly with more hearty food such as roast lamb, tenderloin, pasta, gamey meat, pâté, full-flavour cheeses and also faultlessly complements Indian specialties such as lamb kebabs and mutton biryani. It is best enjoyed at 16°C to 18°C.

Chandon BrutChandon draws its French heritage from the legendary Champagne house of Moët & Chandon.

It has been producing some of the finest sparkling wines since 1959, in the carefully selected terroirs of Argentina, California, Brazil and Australia. Chandon Brut is now crafted closer to home in the winemaking heartland of Nashik, using the centuries old méthode traditionnelle. Made from Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, this wine is crisp, vibrant and complex, making it a sophisticated choice for any occasion. Chandon is perfect to celebrate life’s spontaneous moments. Its appearance is a beautiful straw yellow with flashes of green and a fine persistent effervescence. Its aroma is a fresh fruit bouquet of citrus blossom, green apple and hints of tropical fruits and sweet vanillia spice. Its generous flavours lead to a creamy mid-palate and a long, crisp and lingering finish. The fruit flavours are complemented by vanillin and toasty yeast notes derived from aging on yeast in the bottle which is part of the méthode traditionnelle used to make all Chandon India Sparkling Wines. It is best enjoyed chilled at 6°C to 8°C.

Not many spas and salons can match the luxury experienced at The Club’s Antara Spa and Krimson Salon!

Text by Trishala Patel

EXPERIENCE!A LUXURIOUS

HEALTH & BEAUTY

Antara Spa is a beautiful haven located at The Club. When one steps into the Spa, leaving the hustle and

bustle of the pool area behind, one realises the true value of having such a lovely, relaxing spa that is so easily accessible in such a stressful city. Antara Spa caters to all your spa needs, whether you are an athlete in need of a specific treatment to soothe a muscle group, you need a facial or beauty treatment for a big day, or you just want to be pampered silly, Antara Spa does it all.

I was fortunate enough to choose the amazing Swedish massage, which is a must-try for all patrons. This relaxing, yet energising massage uses oil to gently massage the entire body, reinvigorating tired muscles, and also doing wonders for dry skin. The receptionist at Antara Spa first asks guests to list any health concerns, and also the area of their body they want concentrated on. My masseuse, Sophie, was sensational, and really responded to my preferences in pressure and concentration. The massage began with a little feet-cleansing ritual, where warm water enriched with bath salts was poured over my feet. Although this was probably more from a cleanliness

point of view, it provided a ceremonious beginning to a wonderful massage. Each massage room also has a shower, equipped with body wash, shampoo and conditioner, where guests can wash up after an oil massage so as to not feel sticky.

But why let the luxury stop after a massage and shower? Krimson Salon is right next door, and their hair specialists are fabulous and highly professional and knowledgeable. I had a hair wash and blow dry, and rest assured, I was very impressed with their level of expertise. The hair wash was soothing and the blow dry was done very professionally, keeping in mind the specifications I had asked for: poker straight with no waves. My specialist also gave me some advice for my hair type, and some great styling tips and products, all really great and effective suggestions.

Antara Spa and Krimson Salon, although individually top of the line, are also a match made in indulgence heaven. Why not make a day out of it? Get spoilt at Antara Spa with your girlfriends and proceed to Krimson Salon for a great cut and dry or a ‘mani-pedi’, to leave you looking and feeling fabulous. Or surprise your significant other with a great couple’s massage. Or gift a loved one a massage gift voucher or hair treatment of their choice. Enjoy this exclusive universe of luxury, pampering and indulgence at Antara Spa and Krimson Salon.

EVENTFUL!SOMETHING

Organise beautiful events effortlessly, with our help and your vision, at The Club.

There’s a huge amount of planning that goes into organising an event. As an organiser, you need all the help you can get to put things together as smoothly and efficiently as possible. An event is successful

only when all the elements fit together effortlessly, be it your venue, facilities, caterers, entertainment and anything else required for creating a memorable celebration. For example, a corporate booker understands their company’s value and makes all the efforts to recreate an environment that resembles their company’s value and vision. For this, the venue of their event plays the most significant role. Once the venue is booked, one is able to then concentrate on other aspects of the event.

At The Club, we organize both social and corporate events including weddings, conferences, training and more. Our endeavour is to ensure that we not only provide you with the

venue for your event but also work with you to make it a success, no matter how small or big it may be.

Here are six tips that could help you organise an extra-ordinary event with us and deliver the best to your guests, leaving them happy and satisfied.

1. Share your calendar – If your company conducts regular trainings, seminars etc. you can share your calendar with us and we will book our banquet rooms for you as per your dates. In case of changes in the date, you may notify us once confirmed and we will try our best to accommodate the new dates.

2. Book early – One of the main concerns of every booker is venue

availability. You may not always find venues available on your preferred date and time. To avoid this, you may book your event with us for a date you tentatively decide. Other details of the event can be discussed closer to the date.

3. Type of event – Identify if your event is a social event like a party or social gathering or a formal meeting or conference. We can then best advise which of our spaces from our nine banquet venues would be suitable for your event.

4. State your needs – Besides the location there are several elements involved in making an event a success. Share your needs and requirements for the event with us. Our team will gladly assist you and

do their best to accommodate your every requirement

5. Catering – The menu for the event also plays an important role. While planning the event please share your ideas for a menu and our experienced Chefs will provide you with a variety of menu options to suit your palate and preferences.

6. Event Management – Sometimes your event might require the services of an event management company. We have on our panel a team of professional and experienced event managers who can assist you in the smooth functioning of your event.

So what are you waiting for? Look no further, as The Club meets all your event-planning needs!

The story traces the journey of Lord Ram from the palace in Ayodhya to his exile in the forest with his wife Sita and

Tennis Specific Fitness (all ages): Tennis is an extremely physically demanding sport requiring extreme stamina combined with agility, speed and strength. The training for tennis is very different as compared to general conditioning. The monsoon time could offer the time you need to build your general fitness ability.

Individual Coaching with Video Analysis: One hour of intensive coaching to develop technical skills and implement corrections, something which is difficult to do in a group situation. Video analysis plays an important role in technical coaching using high speed camera with motion analysis software. This includes a one hour class ensuring easy and scientific corrections to any stroke scientifically in the shortest time possible. The off season is the best time to work on any catching up or corrections.

MEMBER PROFILE

Member Sandeep Ghosh on life, passion and travel!

MANAGINGSUCCESS!

On being called CEO material on LinkedIn, what are the qualities you feel make you CEO material?Apart from luck and hard work, passion is very important. If you are not passionate about what you do, it’s very difficult to enjoy and excel in it. Be excited to go to work every morning! Sachin Tendulkar would say “cricket is my life.” Similarly for me, my job is my life and if I am not excited about my job, I am not excited about my life.

What makes it easy for you to manage people? As a leader you have to create a common sense of purpose. When there is a common purpose, a goal to achieve, it brings people together. Secondly, you need to be accessible to people. As a good listener, you must take other’s points of view into consideration. Lastly, a positive and happy environment makes a huge difference; an environment where everyone feels welcomed, there’s respect for diversity and is an open organization. There are many theories one can learn from books but management is common sense. Education is a good start but it depends on the person and what he/she does about it. As a parent what kind of education do you want for your children? As a parent I feel that the education system should prepare children to be

successful citizens in this globalised world. Earlier, exposure was limited but now kids are exposed to so much through media, internet and various other forms. Education should be multifaceted and prepare children for this day and age.

How do you maintain such an environment for your children at home?Maintaining the right balance at home is very important and my wife, Kavita, plays a key role in this. She gave up her career to be with the children. Not only is she available for them but is actively involved in their lives. She’s on top of everything, both their education and extra-curricular activities. One of the reasons we shifted to Juhu from South Mumbai was to be closer, both to their school and The Club. We became members of The Club 4 years ago but because of traveling we couldn’t come here much. Now that we are closer, they come to The Club for various activities. How do you spend your time at The Club individually and as a family? My kids come here to learn swimming. They also come here to catch up and spend time with their friends. In fact, both Kavita and I also have several friends here because many parents from my kids’ school, Ecole Mondiale, are members here. So we catch up with them too. My wife and I both go to the Antara Spa. After a hectic schedule a good massage

in the spa is very relaxing. Kavita uses the Krimson Salon a lot, too. I am pretty regular at the Gym, too. I try to hit the gym at least three to four times a week. The Club has become an integral part of our lives. What’s your fitness routine?I was never an early morning person but there’s been a complete lifestyle change. Waking up early and completing your physical exercise in the morning refreshes you for the entire day. I have a personal trainer and that makes a big difference, too. A trainer not only gives you the right advice, saving you from injury, but is also

a huge motivation. When I haven’t been to the gym for long, I get a message from him asking where I am.

How would you say sports benefit children and adults alike?Like most Indians, I have played a lot of cricket. I also enjoy football and table tennis too. Sports are not only good for overall health and fitness but there are several other benefits. It inculcates a sense of team spirit and bonding. You become more at ease with people both in the social setting and work. Playing a sport also sharpens your mind. Every sport involves strategy. You

must understand both yours and your opponent’s strengths and weaknesses. Lastly, playing a sport teaches you to be mentally tough. It teaches you to cope with defeat and injuries. This helps both kids and adults alike.

Waking up early and completing your physical exercise in the morning refreshes you for the entire day. I have a personal trainer and that

makes a big difference, too.

Tell us a little about your exciting career. My work has involved a lot of traveling & working in several countries such as the UK, Germany, Dubai, Hong Kong and now back to India. I have worked in textiles, consumer marketing for Pepsico and then moved to the banking sector with Citi and now insurance with Bharati Axa. There has been a dramatic, unplanned shift in my careers. For me the industry never really mattered because my profile always involved business management and people management. I have always been more focused on the company I work for rather than the industry. I took up all the opportunities presented to me and fortunately have worked for a variety of globally leading companies.

How do you relax & rejuvenate?I read a lot, magazines, books, newspaper, everything. TV is very therapeutic too. I love watching films. I also love spending time with my friends over dinner. The Club is the best place to catch up with friends.

A message that you would like to share with the young entrepreneurs and leaders:I have traveled a lot both for work and leisure. It gave me an opportunity to meet a lot of people and experience different cultures. It broadens your horizons. You learn to adapt to changes, different situations and all kinds of people. It’s good to have a goal and be focused, however in the pursuit of a goal, don’t miss the opportunity to meet people and travel. It molds your personality and makes you perceptive. In short, pursue your dreams but enjoy life, too. Be balanced.

MEMBER STORIES

BASESHIFTING The Club has made our transitioning

into India life far simpler and has created an environment where we

can enjoy our time as a family.

The Club member, Rekha Shenoy tells us about her and her family’s move back to India from the States, and The Club’s helping hand.

Text by Rekha Shenoy

We have a beautiful home in New York with a backyard pool which we purchased at a fairly young age. We loved the house, the neighbourhood on Long Island and being part of the community. In the last two years, when we moved further north, we purchased another home in New Hampshire which was like our dream home.

We lugged our kids everywhere we went. Our sense of adventure led us to explore trekking, fall colours, seasonal fruit picking, summer pool parties and trying world cuisines. Sushi nights were our favourite. We loved entertaining and held annual Halloween, Diwali and Christmas parties at our home.

We always kept talking amongst friends, that one day we would go back to India. We had friends, some of whom had moved back to India and returned, while others had settled down in India. It took a major life event to precipitate the decision to return to India; my husband’s mother passed away a couple of years ago. We grew more and more aware of the fact that the kids needed to be connected to their roots and family,

all of whom were in India. We missed the ease of interacting with family while we lived in the west. After moving back, they are close by and we visit them often. On a recent trip to Goa with the family, we also did a pooja together after a long time.

The first few months back in India were tumultuous, as we were warned by friends who had moved back earlier. We went through the pains of adjusting to life in a new country; very few things went as expected. We found that vacationing for three weeks in India every year versus settling here were two very different things. Moreover, it seemed in many ways that life had not changed in India. From purchasing everyday items, to getting around, to getting work done, to expecting people to keep their engagements and appointments, it seemed everything involved more effort as we got familiar with our new environment. In the US, one took care of most things by themselves and only if required would one hire help. We had figured life here would be easier as help was readily available. But help here posed its own set of challenges. We could probably write an entire chapter on maids and drivers.

It was challenging to establish connections again as a lot of our friends had migrated to the US. We were scared about leaving behind our kids’ activities like swimming and piano and the friends they had made. We had promised ourselves that we would not talk about our frustrations for at least a year however the going got challenging at times. We

picked an IB school for our kids so they would have an easy transition. We picked Juhu as our place of residence as it provided the best mix of elements we were looking for. Proximity to the water was also an added bonus.

We were looking for various avenues to connect with the community. The Club provided that beautifully, and also helped with activities for the kids. Our focus, at that moment, was to smoothen the transition for our children. The Club played and continues to play a major role in this because they enjoy several activities here like swimming, tennis, reading, skating and continue to participate in events planned by the Club for Easter, Halloween and Diwali. The kids love being in the pool and catching up with their friends. There is a sense of continuity and belongingness for them, and no vacuum from the life we left in the States. We also love the fact that it has the Anada Wine Club, an added bonus for us as we both love wine. We have also attended a couple of events here such as the Stand-up Comedy and it’s quite refreshing

The Club has made our transitioning into India life far simpler and has created an environment where we can enjoy our time as a family. We also look forward to more events that will help connect our kids to their roots. Its communal setting has allowed us to make some great friends, and it keeps our children busy with activities, that really help them. Moving back to India has definitely been hectic, but The Club has definitely helped us smoothen some of the bumps.

Prashant and I have spent 15 years in the United States, most of which were spent in New York and a couple of

years close to Boston. Prashant was the Chief Technology Officer for an aviation software company and I worked as a VP for bulge bracket banks on Wall Street. When we were first married, we enjoyed various couple friendly activities such as salsa dancing, yoga classes, skiing trips, kayaking, camping with friends, parasailing, clubbing and more. I picked up a little bit of cooking and can make a mean Mangalorean fish curry. Life was busy with work schedules and taking yearly exotic vacations. We were then blessed with two lovely kids, Riya and Viveka, and life was not the same anymore.

BEKAL

The Club members, Bindu and Ashok Mehra, talk about the amazing time they had with friends and family at the gorgeous Vivanta by Taj, Bekal.

Text by Bindu and Ashok Mehra

EARTHHEAVEN ON W hat a wonderful

experience! In April when my husband and I were planning for our

holiday at Taj Vivanta, Bekal, our friends were skeptical. Many of them said that second week of May was the wrong time of the year to go, as the weather would be far warmer than Mumbai. And when we told them that we were going for four nights, they said we would be bored out our skins! However, as time passed by, friends and relatives alike were influenced by our enthusiasm and finally seven of us landed in Mangalore on a sunny afternoon!

After a two hour drive we reached Taj Vivanta at Bekal and we were completely in awe of the beauty it exhibited. What a property! We felt we were in a lush, tropical forest with amazing flora and fauna. The hotel itself was breathtaking!

It would rain late afternoons or evening and the heat would settle down. Our Villas had individual pools and people like me who have never ever entered a pool absolutely loved it! I felt I was a youngster again splashing and paddling around. The food was great and the staff, very obliging and hospitable. The icing on the cake was the spa and parlour! They used the best products and the hair specialist who did

my treatment was amazing.

How those four days flew by we do not know. We did a bit of sightseeing, too. One can easily spen a couple of hours exploring Bekal Firt, which is quite close to the hotel. However, there is enough to do in Vivanta by Taj, Bekal, itself. They keep you busy with cooking demos, cycling, archery, and more. The huge pool has so many wonderful plants around it that you feel you are literally in a lush, green and colourful paradise!

We could have easily enjoyed another couple of days here!

Bekal is an ideal place for honeymooners and people like us who just want to relax. If you go with friends then it’s a real bonus. There are ample number things to do there, walk and jog in the gardens or along the beach, play cards, practice yoga and generally laze by the pool and feel absolutely blessed to be in a place of such beauty and traquility!

Third night complimentary on a room &

breakfast only basis.

TRAVEL

The Club member, Eeshika Bhagtani, tells us about her travels to the gorgeous hill

station of Gulmarg, Kashmir.

HOLIDAY IN

Gulmarg’s legendary beauty, prime location and proximity to Srinagar naturally make it one of the premier hill

stations in the country. Gulmarg looks like something out of a fantasy, and in spring, the green meadows are dotted with colourful bluebells, daisies, forget-me-nots and buttercups. Surrounding them are snow-capped mountains, and on a clear day, one can see all the way to Nanga Parbat in one direction and Srinagar in another. December onwards, the luxuriant green slopes of Gulmarg are blanketed in snow, forming some of the finest natural slopes for ski runs of all levels. It is during this time that Gulmarg acquires a new persona- the country’s premier skiing destination.

Make Angel Wings - The joy of Gulmarg is that there is generally a lot of snow. Once the kids have gotten tired of sledging down the slopes, there are angel wings to be made and snow ice-cream to be eaten.

Learn to Ski - There are three ‘bunny slopes’ perfect for beginning skiers. Instructors can be hired for the day, the week or for a one-off lesson and they tend to be very good with kids. Equipment is available to rent in Gulmarg, but if you are particular about your ski gear, best bring it with you.

Take a Ride on the Gondola - Gulmarg is home to the world’s second highest cable car, the two-tiered Gulmarg gondola.

Take Tea - This corner of India is well known for its delicious kahwah tea, a

traditional green tea preparation. It’s prepared by boiling green tea leaves with saffron, cinnamon, cardamom and sometimes Kashmiri roses. It is delicious and the perfect way to warm up on a cold winter day.

Ski or Snowboard - Although not a huge ski resort (by US or European standards, anyway), Gulmarg offers some fantastic opportunities for advanced skiers and snowboarders. There are plenty of off-piste powder runs (make sure you go with a guide) and there is even the option of going heli-skiing.

Build a Snowman - In the words of Anna and Elsa of Frozen (still can’t get them out of my head), you too can build a snowman in this veritable frozen wonderland.

Have a Snowball Fight - What better way to get back on your brother, sister, mum, dad or friends than by pelting them with snow?

Enjoy Time Indoors - At the end of a long day in the snow, enjoy some down time with a cup of steaming hot chocolate. Remember to bring books, your iPads, music and headphones!

Visiting Gulmarg was a great experience, mind refreshing, relaxing, and lots of fun! This gorgeous hill station has proven to be one of my favourite places on earth, and I recommend everyone to visit.

How to get there: Fly to Srinagar, Kashmir. A taxi from Srinagar airport to Gulmarg is about Rs.1500 –2000.

Best time to visit: November – February if you want to experience snow and ski. March – June if you prefer warmer weather, less snow and green meadows.

Food: Enjoy Kashmiri delicacies such as Yakhni, Dum Aloo and Rogan Josh in Gulmarg at dhabas and hotels, alike.

There is immense beauty here and the adventure activities make Gulmarg much more than a cool hill retreat. The journey to Gulmarg is half the enchantment. Roads bordered by avenues of poplar give way to flat expanses of rice fields interspersed with picturesque villages. Depending on the season, nature’s colours could supply the translucent green of spring, summer’s rich emerald, or autumn’s golden hues, and scarlet chillies festoon windows of village homes. After Tanmarg, the climb to Gulmarg begins through fir-covered hillsides. A point on this road, solemnly named ‘View Point’ offers an astounding spectacle of snow-covered mountains, almost within touching distance.

The only place worth staying in Kashmir is ‘The Khyber Himalayan Resort & Spa’. We spent three nights at this hotel and had the best experience staying here. Located at one of the most awe-inspiringly beautiful places on earth, the resort promises a once in a life time experience for its visitors. Breathtaking vistas of the highest mountain ranges in the Himalayas, the world’s highest golf course that converts into a skiing paradise in winters and the world’s highest ski-gondola ride are just a few of the attractions of the resort. The resort promises the pristine beauty of the Himalayas and thrilling adventures all year round.

The food, spa, pool, room- everything was outstanding! The heated pool had beside it a floor to ceiling window overlooking the surreal snow-capped mountains. The spa was excellent. The food had a lot of variety; we tried Indian, Kashmiri, Italian and South Indian. Everything was very well done and made to suit a variety of palates and preferences. For the health conscious, there was whole section that served wheat pasta, brown rice and other healthy items. Without doubt, the Khyber Himalayan Resort & Spa is the best place to be in Gulmarg!

Things to do in Gulmarg:Go Sledging - Race down the mountain on a sledge. Sledges are available to hire (the traditional wooden kind) and the beauty of tobogganing here is that there are porters to help pull you back up the slopes!
