Keywords are meaningful words used by authors or inventor in their titles and abstracts. Sometimes an author may select the same words that match a CAS Concept and sometimes they call it slightly differently
Concept terms are intellectually selected by CAS scientists to systematically capture relevant aspects of the publication
Search example:PLA nanoparticles for drug delivery

Search example: PLA nanoparticles for drug delivery Natural language search without operators or phrase search qualifiers

Clearly the first hit is very relevantAlmost 100k answers found
Why is this among the top records?
CAS is a division of the American Chemical Society. Copyright 2020 American Chemical Society. All rights reserved. 8
'Drug delivery systems' exists as a concept
This concept is a subcategory of 'drug delivery systems'
Also 'nanoparticles' is part of the indexing
2 distinct keywords appear in the title
'PLA' found the chemical name, so substances show a hit as well
The algorithm will find less relevant results too
CAS is a division of the American Chemical Society. Copyright 2020 American Chemical Society. All rights reserved. 9
The drug concept indexing was hit, though only one of the two query terms from ‘drug delivery‘ was found
‘pla‘ also found substance names for polylactic acid, registered via the monomer as well as the structural repeating unit.
The nanoparticle search concept and delivery aspect were not found.
Why do substance roles appear?
CAS is a division of the American Chemical Society. Copyright 2020 American Chemical Society. All rights reserved. 10
As 'pla' is not identified as a concept or part of it, the search is extended to chemical names. Searching 'pla' as a substance name reveals what is searched behind the scenes. Publications with indexed polylactic acid will be retrieved without deliberately searching chemical names.
Roles are linked to substances or substance classes

Biological StudyAssigned to a substance in studies of the role of the substance in or its effect on biological molecules and systems (including organisms, organs, cells, and subcellular systems). Includes aspects such as metabolism, toxicity, occurrence, biological applications and composition.
Get to know concepts which we retrieved with our search query

Nanoparticles, pharmaceutical nanoparticles and drug delivery systems are among the top 5 concepts.
We found several very relevant nanoparticle‐related concepts
Are there further relevant concepts?

nano*Use wildcards within the search tab to find concepts containing words starting with 'nano'
If regarded as relevant we can consider searching nano* or remove this search concept from the basic query in a 2nd approach incl. operators and truncation

Boolean operators
• Use parentheses to group logical expressions such as OR‘ed synonyms:(artificial or replacement) and skin
AND requires both concepts to be present within the document
OR requires either one or both concepts to be presentConnect synonyms with OR
NOT excludes documents from an answer setBe careful when using the NOT operator, you cannot always assess the context of document texts

Phrase Search and truncation

• Terms enclosed in double quotes will be searched in the input orderE.g.: "drug delivery"
• Internal and right-hand truncation is available* replaces 0 to any number of characters? replaces 0 or 1 character
• Example for utilizing wildcardshemicellul* hemicellulose, hemicellulosic, hemicellolytic, hemicellulases
Please type special characters such as "" in SciFindern directly

(pla or polylactic*) and ("drug delivery" or "pharmaceutical nanoparticle")
Very common term in scientific and patent publications. Also retrieves a series of highly‐relevant concepts,. e.g.:‐ Drug delivery systems (4.7k)‐ Controlled‐release drug delivery systems (3.7k)‐ Targeted drug delivery systems (1,016)
Finds text hits and SRU and monomer‐related polylactic acid registrations
"Pharmaceutical nanoparticle" encodes the drug and the nanosize aspect, so should be searched as a separate keyword

(pla or polylactic*) and ("drug delivery" or "pharmaceutical nanoparticle")
(!) Issue: A new search has to be initiated, filter settings will be lost
Exclude chitosan from your results: Option 2 – Search Within: NOT

Repeat parts of the query present in all answers, then add NOT
(!) Do not start Search Within queries with an operator
This way, you can keep filter settings but still limit results
The term is required rather than excluded, e.g. AND is used

Summary
• SciFindern's system power allows to start with millions of answers and refine results sequentially
• Natural language searches include relevant results but may lack precision• Logical operators, phrase search and wildcard qualifiers allow to
create precise text queries to find more relevant answers• Concepts are an ideal tool to efficiently focus searches on specific scientific
areas• Simultaneous structure and text searching exploits the value of substance
indexing and text retrieval capabilities with a single search
