Reference Rock Site Condition n  Defined by:

n  Shear-wave velocity (Vs) n  Compression-wave velocity (Vp) n  Local attenuation (κ0,ref) n  Unit weight

n  Appropriate for the Central and Eastern North America (stable continental)

8/20/2013 NGA-East GWG: Reference Rock 3

Importance of Reference Condition •  Present in all

velocity profiles in the region

•  Interface between regional and site-specific models

•  The reference condition for amplification models

Existing Vs,ref Recommendation •  EPRI (1993) study is the

basis of current values •  Vs,ref of 2.83 km/sec

(9,200 ft/sec) •  Based on 16 crustal

structure regions •  Vs values computed from

Vp inversions and an assumed Poisson’s ratio of 0.25

8/20/2013 NGA-East GWG: Reference Rock 5

n  Published GMPEs use 2.00 to 2.88 km/sec n  Based on simulations n  Vs,ref values based on top of assumed crustal profile

Existing κ0,ref Recommendation n  EPRI (1993) reported a median κ0,ref

of 0.006 sec and initially proposed a σln of 0.40.

n  EPRI (1993) and Toro et al. (1997) used equally weighted values 0.0003, 0.006, and 0.012 sec

Collection of Velocity Data n  Vs and Vp measurements that

penetrate hard-rock were collected n  Journal publications and technical

reports n  Nuclear power plant applications

n  Located 283 profiles in study region n  68 Vs,ref values at 27 different locations n  60 Vp,ref values at 22 different locations

Example Velocity Profile

8/20/2013 NGA-East GWG: Reference Rock 9

Definition of Reference Velocity n  Based on characteristics of collected

velocity profiles n  Typical profiles transition from soil to

weathered rock to intact rock n  Established a criteria based on:

1.  Velocity 2.  Measurement penetration 3.  Velocity gradient 4.  Geologic age

Characterizing the Uncertainty

8/20/2013 NGA-East GWG: Reference Rock 15
