FOCUS: BATHROOM CREATIVITY

← Design Firm: Spaciality, Inc. Interior Designer: Coco Kanakis

THE SOLUTIONKanakis settled on an “urban skateboard park” theme for the space. To capture the right style, she incorporated design elements typical of an open-air skateboard park, like concrete-look floor tile, replica floodlights, black asphalt-colored accessories, green faucets, and wood wall tile. Unique accent tile with printed skateboard patterns provided the finishing touch. The overall layout wouldn’t have been possible without a Geberit Concealed Tank and Carrier system with a wall-hung toilet, a go-to for Dutch-born Kanakis. Geberit in-wall units are standard in any European bathroom.

“One of the features of the Geberit system is the adjustable legs,” says Kanakis. “The historic townhouse floors were out-of-level, with variances of 2 inches or more from one end of the room to the other. In this bathroom, the entire floor had to be built up to make the floor level and safe for wet-room use. The adjustable legs on the Geberit carrier frame allowed us to compensate for the floor variances that were discovered during construction. The adjustable, lowered toilet seat height also adds comfort for the boys.”

The Geberit system removes the toilet tank from the bathroom and tucks it safely inside the wall. This, combined with the wall-hung 60-inch vanity, added greatly to the ‘skateboard park’ sense of space. A wall-hung toilet makes it easy to maneuver in the small bathroom while being highly functional, whimsical, and hygienic. A special finish on all the ceramics prevents dirt from sticking, making cleanup easy and keeping the bathroom cleaner for longer.

The final touch is a Geberit Sigma50 water-saving dual-flush plate (shown), a functional accent that complements the contemporary appeal of the bathroom. The Sigma50 model Kanakis chose is made of die-cast zinc with a jet-black plastic inlay. Dual-flush buttons of 1.6 GPF (6 LPF) for solids or 0.8 GPF (3 LPF) for liquids give an effective flush volume of 1.1 GPF (4 LPF) and save thousands of gallons of water per year when compared with a standard toilet. All the working parts of the Geberit in-wall system are accessible behind the flush plate.

“The dual-flush actuator aligns with the client’s environmentally-conscious mandate and was used in the remaining bathrooms as well,” says Kanakis, who also designed the owners’ previous home, a New York City loft, using the Geberit in-wall system. Additional ‘green’ features in the bathroom are low-flow faucets and valves and LED lighting.

BATHROOM RENOVATION, GREENWICH VILLAGE, NEW YORKDesigner Coco Kanakis, Principal of Spaciality Inc. in Bedford Corners, New York, used a Geberit in-wall toi-let system to maximize the space and create a fun young boys’ bathroom. The “urban skateboard park” is one of six bathrooms in a 5000-square-foot, Greek Revival townhouse in Greenwich Village. The design was made possible by the Geberit system.

THE CHALLENGEWhen one of Coco Kanakis’ clients moved from a contemporary downtown loft to an 1800s Greenwich Village townhouse on the west side of lower Manhat-tan, they looked to Kanakis to reinstate their new home’s former grandeur while incorporating modern conveniences. This involved reconfiguring the interior spaces to accommodate the client’s large family, which was not an easy task given that the building façade needed to be preserved as a part of the larg-est historic district in New York City.

Part of the challenge was to design a fun-filled, practi-cal, eco-conscious bathroom for the owners’ two young boys while maximizing the 5´ x 8´ footprint. This entailed relocating all the plumbing, providing plenty of storage, and sourcing products with easy cleanup and maintenance.

FOCUS: CLASSIC MODERN BATHROOM DESIGN

← Kevin Yoder, Architect and Designer

THE SOLUTIONYoder first became familiar with Geberit while working on the design and specifications for the guest room suites of the 5-Star luxury hotel chain Shangri-La, based in Hong Kong.

Yoder then used Geberit systems in his own home located in the Society Hill townhouse complex. “The Geberit in-wall system transforms the powder room into the modern, minimal look we wanted by concealing the toilet tank,” says Yoder. Minimalism in interior design means designing every room—even the bathroom—with a combination of simplicity, sophistication, beauty, and practicality.

Following the successful renovation of his own home, Yoder designed and renovated a second townhouse in his complex for a professional couple. Yoder presented many creative solutions to the clients, and the Geberit wall-hung toilet was one of them.

Yoder incorporated wall-hung toilets and Geberit in-wall systems for both powder rooms and the master bathroom in his clients’ townhome. “The ability to capture wall space makes Geberit systems very attractive when designing within existing conditions,” says Yoder.

“We wanted the powder room to complement our classic modern design concept. We recommend Geberit in-wall systems for our clients not only for the space saving, but also to accommodate the plumbing in the wall rather than tearing up the flooring. We won’t recommend a product we don’t use ourselves as in the case of Geberit in my own townhome,” says Yoder.

The Geberit Concealed Tank and Carrier System gives the powder room an entirely new look by mounting the toilet on the wall and concealing the tank and other functional components in the wall, creating a very clean, minimalistic design with flexibility for fixture placement. Yoder added that Geberit in-wall systems work especially well in high-rise residential or historic home bathroom renovations, where space for plumbing may be limited.

The Geberit System provides unlimited possibilities for bathroom design by allowing the plumbing fixtures to float above the floor. In Yoder’s townhouse, finishing off with Geberit Sigma30 polished chrome flush plates complements the powder room with an elegant touch that combines simple and smooth lines, visual elegance, and effortless operation.

RESIDENCE OF ARCHITECT KEVIN YODER, PENNSYLVANIAAward-winning architect and designer Kevin Yoder of k YODER design, used a Geberit Duofix carrier system to creatively renovate a powder room and master bath in his Society Hill townhouse.

THE CHALLENGESociety Hill is a historic neighborhood in the oldest part of Philadelphia. An urban renewal program beginning in the 1960s restored the area and its many historic buildings, including Independence Hall. Society Hill is now one of the most sought-after neighborhoods in the city, and the district is on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.

Kevin Yoder and his firm, k YODER design, performed an extensive interior renovation of a Society Hill townhouse, originally designed by famed architect I. M. Pei in 1962. The renovation respects the purity of the original design and incorporates 21st century technology and luxury amenities into a compact, minimalistic footprint.

The outside of the townhouse maintains its original classic midcentury design, while on the inside Yoder used his talents to create an updated, spacious, and functional home with a similar modern aesthetic and today’s conveniences. The existing 1960s bathrooms were redone as part of the update. This required removing, replacing, and relocating all of the plumbing and fixtures.

Because of the limited space, plumbing restrictions, and the floor and wall structure of the townhouse, regular floor-standing toilets would not have allowed the same opportunities for design flexibility.

FOCUS: ADDING A PERSONAL SPA

← Liz Murray Interior Designer

MASTER BATHROOM RENOVATIONPORTLAND, OREGON A leading designer fulfills her clients’ desire for a personal spa in a colonial home by transforming a guest bedroom into a state-of-the-art master bathroom.

THE CHALLENGELiz Murray, a prominent interior designer and space planner who has designed some of the Northwest’s finest homes, was approached by clients to remodel their colonial 1940s-style home in Portland, Oregon, with characteristics similar to their contemporary home in Brazil.

The objective was to remodel all three floors of the home to be more open and streamlined—with wall-hung cabinetry and sinks in all bathrooms—while retaining some of the vintage characteristics, such as the fireplace, windows, and hardwood floors.

While Murray’s clients desired a spa-like master bathroom, it was equally important to make the home function more efficiently. “It’s always a challenge to take an older home with vintage attributes and give it a more open, streamlined design while having the two concepts blend well together,” says Murray. “Of course, you want to have form follow function, so it needed to look great but perform really well.”

When Murray’s clients told her they really liked the look of wall hung, she asked them if they had wall-hung toilets in their Brazil home. When they told her they didn’t, but would love to have them in their Portland home, she knew exactly what she wanted to do.

THE SOLUTION“Right away the light bulb went off that I could easily use the Geberit system with Duravit fixtures for a great way to address the bathrooms,” says Murray. “Geberit is the best on the market. It performs well year after year. I’ve specified the product because I can pair it nicely with other fixtures, including Duravit.”

The Geberit system provides unlimited possibilities for bathroom design by hiding the toilet tank behind the wall and taking the plumbing fixtures off the floor. Bathroom design is transformed through the technology of in-wall components, allowing for unique style while improving reliability, performance, installation flexibility, and maintenance.

“It was a very complex master bathroom project,” Murray recollects. “We had a 12½’ x 14½’ guest bedroom to work with that my clients didn’t need to use, so instead of remodeling the master bathroom in its current location, we used the guest bedroom for the new master bathroom. We wanted a symmetrical layout. It was a bit of a challenge to keep everything lined up so that your eye could move around the space really well.”

With a little help from Geberit, Murray met the challenge, turning the guest bedroom into a state-of-the-art master bathroom suite. “We used a flat white paint for the walls that is really beautiful,” says Murray. “White and iridescent mosaic glass tiles with a hand-made look provide added interest to the room. The heated flooring and walls feature mocha crème limestone tiles from Portugal in a larger 18-inch format. Matching counter slabs with the wall-hung cabinetry, sinks, and fixtures complete the look. It’s very spa-like.”

During some of the initial design meetings, the clients decided they wanted a urinal, in addition to a toilet, in the master bathroom suite. “Though you don’t often see a urinal in a residential setting, that was perfect for this project,” says Murray, “because Geberit makes a carrier for the urinal, and Duravit makes beautiful urinal fixtures that match their water closets. There isn’t a more cutting-edge look you can get with this application than by pairing a Geberit Concealed Tank and Carrier system with a Duravit fixture.”

Murray proposed adding separate rooms within the master bathroom suite, one for the urinal and one for the toilet. “The way the room is laid out, we didn’t have to change the entire floor plan,” Murray explains. “Around the corner in the room, we converted a small closet into the urinal room, and then created a small room for the toilet.”

Since the Geberit system can be adjustable from 14 to 19 inches in height and adds about 5 inches of space in front of the toilet just by placing the tank behind the wall, it worked well for both the water closet and the urinal room.“My clients love it!” says Murray. “Everything works very well for them. They say it’s their dream home and they look forward to retiring there. Maybe it’s because, they said, they have plenty of space to use the bathroom together, without getting in each other’s way.”

FOCUS: RESPECTING TRADITION

Architect: Greg SwedbergFirm: 2Scale ArchitectsPhotography: Benjamin Hill Photography

The salon powder room does double duty. Since it serves the pool area, too, it is set up as a wet room with a shower in the middle. The wet room concept works great with wall-hung fixtures for keeping the floors clean and germ-free.

“The client loves the aesthetics of the fixtures,” says Swedberg, adding that the low-flow, earth-conscious aspect of the dual-flush toilets was a bonus advantage.

“I always wondered why residential construction in America did not use wall-hung toilets like I see in European hotels and occasionally in commercial applications in America,” says homeowner Robert Lyke. “They are cleaner, quieter, and more attractive, and they take less space and maintenance.”

Doors from the home offer direct access to the pool and the entire wet area, so it made sense to take a cue from the wall-hung toilet installed in the salon/pool bath and install matching toilets throughout the rest of the home. In the master bathroom, a large, partial wall separates the Geberit system and toilet mounted on one side from two vanities, the tub, and the dressing area on the other side. Bathroom components such as the wall-hung toilets and vanities and a barrier-free, accessible shower contribute to the sense of spaciousness. Openness is important to maintaining flow throughout the home, while making the most of limited room in the luxurious, yet smaller baths.

When the Houston chapter of the American Institute of Architects chose the Lyke residence as one of the stops on its 2013 home tour open to the public, Swedberg predicted that the Geberit Concealed Tank and Carrier System with wall-hung fixtures would be one of the most asked-about design components in the home — and he was right. Geberit in-wall systems captivated visitors to the home, just as they had caught Swedberg’s eye from the start.

“I had seen the product numerous times in countless magazines, but this was my first time using it,” says Swedberg. “I’m certain we’ll use it many times over now that we’ve had such success with this.”

HOME IN HISTORIC DISTRICT HOUSTON, TEXASThe exterior of a Houston home preserves the tradition of its historic neighborhood while its interior goes contemporary with Geberit Concealed Systems and wall-hung toilets, plus every man’s “wish list” home fixture: a urinal.

THE CHALLENGEThe Lyke home is a study in contrasts that meld together beautifully. The 3,500-square-foot contemporary home, completed in 2012, is located within The Heights, an upscale, historic neighborhood in Houston developed at the turn of the last century.

“The historic district wants to preserve the original structures,” says Greg Swedberg, principal of 2Scale Architects, the Houston firm that designed the home. “New structures need to be contextually appropriate and respectful.” Where some designers have gone wrong in The Heights, he maintains, is by creating “copycat” buildings that look old, yet are new.

“We wanted to show in the historic district how you can respect indigenous styles, but in a modern way that is design relevant to our clients’ needs without looking like a museum,” says Swedberg. That’s exactly what 2Scale achieved with the Lyke home, which pays homage to tradition while giving the homeowners a design that fits their varied lifestyle.

THE SOLUTIONGeberit Concealed Tank and Carrier Systems offered one way for 2Scale to bring modern looks and conveniences to bathrooms throughout the home. The firm installed a total of five wall-hung toilets, as well as the envy of males everywhere: a urinal.

The main section of the residence may look like the typical three-bedroom, three-and-a-half-bath home. Yet, a closer look reveals that the home also includes an artist’s studio, plus a separate structure that functions as a hair salon business.

“We realized that the hair salon needed an ADA-compliant bathroom, so we wanted to make a bathroom that the clients could use, with fixtures that would look interesting and fun. Because they have a lot of men over,” he explains, for both the salon and as guests, “and because the residents are men, we needed to accommodate ‘male tendencies.’” Installing a urinal made perfect sense.

FOCUS: NEW BATHROOM ADDS VALUE AND PRIVACY

← Susan KlimalaInterior Designer

→ The Geberit system gives designers the option to hide the

toilet tank, providing more flexibility to create beautiful bathrooms.

“Since we were faced with a very limited amount of space, the first step was to get everything up off the floor to allow for a more spacious feel,” explains Klimala. “We added a small bump-out into the adjacent room to allow for proper clearances. Borrowing from a wet room concept, we used a wall-hung toilet and vanity with a curb-free shower to create a sense of space inside the room.”

Because there was no existing plumbing in the room, Klimala used the laundry chute space to run the plumbing down to the basement and vent it. The Geberit system allows for easy venting and easy installation. The system’s flexibility and adaptability are designed for installation ease: the carrier system attaches to wall framing studs at just four points, and draining and venting are no different from a conventional floor-mounted toilet. “My plumber, who installed Geberit before, found that installation was easy,” says Klimala.

Klimala says it was easy to convince her client to go with the wall-hung concept. “The owner is well-traveled and an open-minded artist who was well aware of European décor and the use of the wall-hung toilet. My client loves her new bathroom, and when she uses it, she says she feels like she’s on vacation,” Klimala explains.

Klimala says she would definitely use the Geberit system and a wall-hung toilet again in her design. “It looks fantastic — the wall-hung toilet gives the space a much bigger feel with a clean, modern design.”

VINTAGE HOME RENOVATION GLEN ELLYN, ILLINOISDesigner Susan Klimala uses a concealed tank and carrier system to easily convert two closets into one beautiful guest bathroom in a 1920s home located in the west suburbs of Chicago.

THE CHALLENGEIn a vintage home in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, one bathroom was not enough. Typical of the early twentieth century, when only one bathroom was considered a necessity, the eight-room house was originally built with one bathroom and one powder room.

Interior designer Susan Klimala was tasked to create a second guest bathroom in the home. Her client, who had visitors stay for extended visits several times a year, wanted her guests to be able to enjoy their own bathroom when they stayed and not have to share the main bathroom with the entire family. Adding the extra bathroom to the home would also add value.

THE SOLUTIONUsing the Geberit Concealed Tank and Carrier with a wall-hung toilet gave Klimala the flexibility she needed to convert two closets into one full bathroom, with extra room left over for storage.

“I had to come up with a concept that would fit a very small space,” says Klimala. “The closets were side by side and because of the Code clearances, a certain dimension was needed. We could only achieve this by using a Geberit system and a small bump-out into the adjacent room.”

The Geberit Concealed Tank and Carrier with a wall-hung toilet hides the toilet tank in the wall and takes the toilet off the floor, giving designers more options for creating beautiful bathrooms in small spaces.

FOCUS: INCREASING BATHROOM SPACE

Design Firm: Dorig Designs Photography: James Netz Photography LLC

→ A Geberit Bolero dual-flush plate in Alpine White

pairs beautifully with a Duravit wall-hung toilet.

THE SOLUTIONThe perfect solution for saving those precious inches was a Geberit Concealed Tank and Carrier System with a dual-flush plate and wall-hung, Duravit toilet. The in-wall Geberit system hides the toilet tank and plumbing hardware inside the wall, allowing flexibility in positioning of the toilet – especially important in older houses. The dual-flush valve also reduces stress on the farmhouse’s septic system and leach field. The Geberit dual-flush system lets the user choose between a standard flush (1.6 GPF/6 LPF) for solids and a low-volume flush (0.8 GPF/3 LPF) for liquids.

To maximize the limited space, Dorig removed the old floor-mount toilet and the bathtub, keeping the style simple, functional, and cutting-edge. Dark porcelain tile on the walls and floor gives the bathroom the rustic look of distressed wood, while bright white accents like the Geberit flush plate, recessed sink, medicine cabinet, and shower tile provide sharp contrast.

The homeowner requested “ease-of-use” for older guests. The Geberit in-wall toilet tank with wall-hung toilet and easy flushing, plus a walk-in curbless, doorless shower, was the right way to go. To make further use of the remaining bathroom space, Dorig also installed a pocket door and a narrow but deep vanity with a semi-recessed sink. “The customer loved the improved space and the contrasting design,” Dorig says.

Dorig’s “green” design reduces overall energy consumption with LED lights, an exhaust fan that adjusts automatically by detecting humidity levels, an air-injected faucet and hand shower, and, of course, the Geberit dual-flush system. Walls and floors are finished with tile containing recycled content and grout with low VOC. Shelving is made from reclaimed materials, and the countertop is made of glass-fiber reinforced concrete with recycled material that uses less Portland cement than regular concrete.

AWARD-WINNING DESIGNDorig’s design achieved third place in the Small Bath Category of the 2015 National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) Design Contest. Winners were chosen from 300 entries across six main kitchen and bath categories and ten specialty categories. Entries were scored on safety and ergonomics, elements and principles of design, design planning, creativity, and presentation.

WISCONSIN FARM HOUSE RENOVATIONDesigner Adrienne Dorig’s award-winning small bath design incorporates a Geberit in-wall dual-flush toilet system, increasing space while decreasing water usage.

THE CHALLENGEThe dairy-farming community of Fall Creek, Wisconsin prides itself on enjoying a modern lifestyle while maintaining its rural past.

Fall Creek is a small but growing central Wisconsin community of 1,300 with limited accommodations. The owners of a turn-of-the-century Fall Creek farmhouse wished to improve their main-floor guest bathroom to accommodate overnight visitors. One of the crucial challenges facing Adrienne Dorig, of Dorig Designs in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, was to “open up” the tiny guest bath space on the main floor. Improvements to the space had to include shower and toilet accessibility and conveniences for her client’s older guests.

When the guest bathroom door opened it collided with the clawfoot bathtub, allowing very little maneuvering space. A low ceiling and narrow, windowless layout made the space feel extremely cramped and confined. Dorig had to use every bit of existing space efficiently with a design that complemented the rustic style of the farmhouse. A creative use of modern plumbing technology would allow for water-efficient, sustainable amenities that could also reduce stress on the rural septic system. Every critical inch of space had to be accounted for.

FOCUS: PUBLIC SPACE

Design Firm: FMAArchitect: Farshid Moussavi

MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ARTCLEVELAND, OHIO Designed by Iranian-born architect Farshid Moussavi of London, England, the cutting-edge museum provides, for artists and visitors, a spacious environment that fosters creativity and interest in programs and exhibitions.

THE CHALLENGEThe 34,000-square-foot museum is visually stunning, utilitarian, and inventive, rising 60 feet from a hexagonal base to a square top, where the primary exhibition space is located. Because the entire space was designed for environmental and fiscal sustainability, even the restrooms had to be designed with these factors in mind. All four floors contain areas for either exhibitions or public programs and have four restrooms collectively. 65,000 people per year visit the museum for various functions; naturally, every element of the plumbing system had to be tough, reliable, and water-efficient.

A flexible floor plan for art exhibits was not the only space requirement: space for accessibility in the restrooms was another key challenge. Standard, exposed flush valves not only occupy needed space in the restroom; they can also create an obstacle or even a hazard for visitors with special needs. And, of course, any restroom must be comfortable and accessible for the widest possible range of people. Designing the museum for space and neglecting space needs in the restroom would be counterproductive.

Adding a final layer of complexity, MOCA was built under strict budget rules and designed to meet LEED® standards in reducing environmental impact. This meant using construction methods that produced a healthy and stable indoor environment and plumbing that reduced the use of potable water by 30 percent.

THE SOLUTIONThe Geberit in-wall toilet system was the answer not only to space savings and contemporary design; it also addressed environmental design criteria such as LEED® requirements. Concealing the flush valve inside the wall removes it as an obstacle and “opens up” the restroom for a designer look. The flexible, adjustable Geberit system allows the toilet to be mounted at just the right height, meeting accessibility and comfort requirements for a broad range of different visitors.

“The concealed tank,” according to Jim Roddy Jr., Project Manager for Northern Ohio Plumbing and installer of the Geberit system, “is a one-piece, integrated gravity flush tank made of high-density polyethylene. Each tank is individually leak-tested for reliability and reinforced to prevent collapse. We look at details like this, not only as a point of differentiation for our customers, but to know that the designs stand up to use.”

To save additional costs the in-wall system had to be easy to install. According to Roddy, the Geberit system easily fit this requirement. “We installed thirteen Geberit in-wall systems into MOCA. After a brief learning curve, the installation went smoothly. Once you do a couple it’s easy, even the rough-in takes no more time than a traditional install,” explains Roddy.

For a designer, the real beauty of an in-wall system is the clean, simple look. Once it’s installed, the only visible element of the in-wall system is the stylish flush plate. The flush plate is the “window” into the Geberit system, providing access to all working parts should simple maintenance ever be needed.

Geberit in-wall systems helped MOCA obtain the LEED® silver certification. Geberit’s own program “Care in the Square” creates sustainable quality of life with innovative water management, comprehensive know-how, and a strong focus on sustainability across all Geberit products, sectors, and processes. The dual-flush in-wall system maximizes water efficiency with aesthetically pleasing detail. By providing a small flush of 0.8 GPF (3 LPF) for liquids and a full flush of 1.6 GPF (6 LPF), the Geberit system allows facilities like MOCA to achieve a 33% water savings compared to 1.6 GPF flushing only. Many Geberit toilet system and wall-hung toilet combinations are WaterSense® listed, indicating they have been certified to be at least 20% more efficient without sacrificing performance.

Designing for human diversity makes things easier for all people to use. Because they accommodate the widest range of human abilities, in-wall toilet systems are a clearly superior choice when it comes to accessibility in toilet compartments.

Geberit North America is part of the Geberit Group, a European market leader and global provider of sanitary technology. Located in Des Plaines, Illinois, Geberit North America provides concealed tank and carrier systems for wall-hung and floor-mounted toilets and fixtures. Geberit systems improve the look of any bathroom by hiding the unsightly toilet tank. Replacing a standard tank and toilet with the Geberit system results in more usable space, improved hygiene and better accessibility. The unique dual-flush valve saves water and is practically maintenance free. Geberit also offers cable-controlled bath waste and overflows in a variety of designer finishes. Critical working parts are outside the waterway, ensuring years of trouble-free operation.
