Carl G. (Anton) peddinghausChief Executive Officer | Peddinghaus Corporation

Greetings from the UK! As I write this article, I am in London, and I must say what a thriving, vibrant city! Many people are out and about visiting museums, parks, restaurants, theaters and other entertaining sights. but I must tell you that the most interesting sight to my eyes was how many construction cranes were in the sky! It reminded me of Dubai during their ‘boom time.’

What many of you may not know is I began my sales career 20 years ago in the uK and Ireland markets. In my late 20s, I spent a tremendous amount of time criss-crossing the united Kingdom. So, this country and this island have a very special place in my heart.

Growing Business & FriendshipsDuring that time, I met many unique characters, and we developed long-standing partnerships - which in reality - are true friendships. I can recall when a visit to an Irish fabricator started with an evening beer and ended with some late night singing in the local pub.

The uK and Ireland markets were especially good for structural steel at this time. Don’t quote me, but I think about two-thirds of all buildings were of steel construction. The venues for the London Olympics insured that steel was indeed king in the uK.

Our Irish distributor, John McCarthy, once remarked that he noticed there were more green peddinghaus machines in Ireland than sheep!

it all Runs in Cycles It broke my heart in the 2007/08, when that ride came to an end. Just like the uSA, things became very difficult for the industry. In my estimation, about one-third of the steel fabricators stopped trading business for one reason or another.

After spending the last two weeks traveling the uK and Ireland visiting friends, I could not believe the total turn around in our customers. people are sweating again – working hard! Steel is being sold on cell phones, welders are sending sparks flying, and trucks are pulling loads of fabricated steel – awesome!

Peddinghaus Service…On the JobWhat I enjoyed the most was visiting over thirty of our customers who are all busy – and we still have those same fantastic relationships. Would you believe in these 30 customer visits, I did not have ONE complaint regarding our equipment? Three cheers for our pCuK service team, who is diligently on the job 24 hours/day keeping our customers happy.

One customer told me if he hadn’t invested in peddinghaus equipment, he would have been “history.”

I am both humbled and proud to be part of this energetic, and maybe a little crazy, business environment in these countries.

See You at FaBteCH ChicagoChicago is close to our home in bradley, and we welcome all of our business partners and friends to visit us at FAbTECH. We’ll be in booth S1749 – you can’t miss us (turn the page to find peddinghaus on the show floor map!)

CNC Creates Competitive edgeSince the early 20th century, Canada’s growth in the manufacturing, mining and service sectors has transformed its previously rural economy to an urbanized, industrial force. Canada is currently one of the few developed nations that are net exporters of energy. alberta is home to large oil and gas resources that result in Canada obtaining a 13% share of global oil reserves – the world’s third-largest share after Venezuela and Saudi arabia.

edmonton, alberta, the “Oil Capital of Canada,” is a major economic center for the oil and gas industry. it operates as a staging point for large-scale oil sands projects along the Northwest territories. tucked away in one of the largest industrial parks in Western Canada, W.F. Welding is pushing out production for the oil and heavy industrial markets.

Growing PainsFounded in 1986, W.F. Welding & Overhead Cranes Ltd. originated with four owners and a focus on crane fabrication. In 1998, W.F. began introducing light structural work. Twenty-nine years later, W.F. has grown into three facilities with approximately 120,000 square feet (11,000 square meters) of fabrication space. Due to market demands, W.F.’s structural steel division has grown to be nearly twice the size of their crane division.

Ryan Schram, Structural Division Manager at W.F. Welding, will be the first to tell you the progressive company growth hasn’t always been simple, yet strategic in remaining competitive. “We were a bottleneck,” Ryan explained. “We couldn’t build cranes and structural in the little shop that we had so we built a new shop for structural. Then as our crane division expanded, they needed their own shop. We were fortunate to find a property between our two existing facilities. Now, we’ve expanded there again with space to continue to grow both divisions as needed.”

Busting Out of the Bottleneckbefore W.F. was able to attain company growth, fitters were ‘wasting time’ manually processing flat bar - drawing chalk lines, cutting plates, drilling and punching holes by hand. W.F. quickly realized the detail area was behind in processing. They began to search for more efficient fabrication solutions.

“We had 5-plus fitters working in that area trying to keep up with two shops and it wasn’t efficient,” Ryan recalled.“ When we looked and saw the capability of the peddinghaus equipment, it really made us think. It was a large investment at the time but you could see the difference it would make. It was immediate and the payback on the

machine was less than a year. Not only could it produce accurate material at an incredible rate, it freed up those fitters to move back into production.”

Plate Processor Produces instant ResultsW.F. Welding’s initial investment in peddinghaus technology began with the Fpb-1800 plate machine. understanding the importance of CNC operator training, Ryan and his team took advantage of onsite training from a certified peddinghaus technician. before W.F. acquired the new plate processing system, they continued to manually lay out beams, columns and plates to complete a cold box for an oil sands project measuring 35 feet x 35 feet x 225 feet tall (10m x 10m x 70m) of heavy plate. Following their Fpb installation and proper CNC training, Ryan and the W.F. team were amazed when the first batch of plates were completed in one shift. “It was an eye opener for the shop and really was a game changer.”

“The build quality of the machine is quite good,” Rob Kohler, Detail Supervisor, stated. “They are solid machines. The Fpb is just a workhorse. It puts out a lot of steel and it’s what’s allowed this company to expand.”

Moving away from Manual MethodsExperiencing immediate results from their plate processor, W.F. initiated the second investment with their trusted partner, peddinghaus. An addition of a bDL-1250/9b carbide drill line in tandem with a structural band saw and the AbCM-1250 coper gave W.F. the competitive advantage they were searching for. “We ran our first piece of steel through the beam line and were running heavy columns for a job with 1 ¼” (32 mm) thick flanges,” Ryan stated. “One of our guys would spend 12 hours drilling holes in the columns by hand. We could run a column in that machine in under an hour.”

“When we first got our beam line at the second shop, that was equally a game changer as well,” Ryan recalled. “Without that machine, we wouldn’t be able to keep up and again, it freed up our fitters for production.”

2014 brought along W.F.’s most recent expansion and the acquisition of their third fabrication facility. The addition of an Advantage-2 high speed drill line, a peddiWriter CNC layout marking machine, an HSFDb plate machine, an Anglemaster-HD and a double miter structural band saw, have made this fab shop a structural force within the Canadian market.

the Production Numbers Don’t lieWith their newly installed system, W.F. reports an instant production increase of at least 30% and projects an additional 30-35%. processing 15,000 – 20,000 tons a year is no problem to complete cold boxes for oil sands projects, pedestrian bridges, barge pontoons, steam turbine generator buildings, deep cut gas plant expansions, terminal expansions, separator buildings and platforms for stabilizer towers. “The new machinery has allowed us to bid on larger jobs that otherwise we would not have been able to accommodate,” Rob stated. “With our new shop, production has increased and the new machines have allowed us to put out more steel to bid on larger jobs instead of the smaller portions of big, structural jobs.”

Ryan and the team at W.F. feel confident about their company’s continued growth. With an immense CNC equipment lineup and accompanying CAD/CAM software, accuracy and quality are the main components setting this firm apart from others in the industry. “I really believe without the peddinghaus equipment, we wouldn’t be competitive enough to produce the numbers that we need to,” Ryan exclaimed. “Alberta has a boom-bust cycle and when you’re in the valleys, margins get fairly tight. If you didn’t have this equipment, you wouldn’t even be able to come to the table ”

IN FOCuS | SL Chasse Steel

IN THIS pHOTO: Steve Chasse, president, is able to compete and increase tonnage with the use of peddinghaus technology.

New England is the birthplace of America, dating back to 1620 when the first settlers arrived with characteristics of intelligence, dedication and ambition to succeed in the New World. These early inhabitants set the tone for later generations of New England business owners and entrepreneurs.

There is no better example of a 21st century New England success story than to travel 45 minutes north of boston to Hudson, New Hampshire. There you will find SL Chasse Steel – a premier structural fabricator in the Northeast region of the united States. It is here where Steve Chasse, president, and his team are experiencing unparalleled revenue growth by using today’s CNC software and machine tool technology.

a Standalone Steel CompanyFounded in 1989, Steve Chasse began SL Chasse Welding & Fabricating, Inc. In 2012, Steve expanded the company’s name to reflect the full-service structural steel fabrication and erection capabilities as SL Chasse Steel. projects stretch across the New England area with specialization in retail, commercial, housing, hotels, condominiums, schools and medical buildings. “We try to be a standalone company,” explained Steve. “We

try to do everything in-house; it makes the business much more controllable and allows us to serve the customers much quicker and easier. We provide one-stop shopping where customers don’t have to deal with a bunch of different contractors; they can deal with one. It’s much easier and they like it.”

Strategic expansion In an area where land acquisition comes at a high cost, Steve still sought to expand his business. He understood automation was necessary in order to increase productivity following his first CNC investment with peddinghaus in 2005. “We bought a single spindle drill line manufactured by peddinghaus and shortly thereafter, we bought a DG-1100 miter saw,” Steve stated. “using both machines increased our sales considerably and we were able to compete much better. Once we started using CNC machinery, we realized we could produce more tonnage using the same amount of workers - which is great for business, and business only grew from there.”

Researching the CNC MarketplaceSteve and the SL Chasse team needed to be well-calculated in their CNC investments and shop layout to gain the highest efficiency in

a limited amount of space. They faced the challenge of working with two buildings and roughly 50,000 square feet (4,650 square meters) for their production. Steve began exploring equipment options within the competitive market but admits he always went back to peddinghaus. “When we started looking at different equipment, I had checked out a few different companies that sold the same type of equipment,” Steve recalled. “I knew peddinghaus; we’ve dealt with peddinghaus and ultimately they were the company that we chose. The service was great; I would say second-to-none.”

laying Out their Futurepeddinghaus put its custom design engineers on the task of providing the most efficient shop layout inside the limited amount of available space. With layout engineers skilled in creating cost-effective layouts for productivity optimization, peddinghaus aided SL Chasse not only with the machine layout, but also the new structural building layout.

“We had a certain size building to work with when we were building and a certain amount of land,” Steve explained. “We brought peddinghaus in to help us layout how the steel was going to flow. It was a little out of

1515

the ordinary because we didn’t have a straight line to work with. peddinghaus worked with us on that design, helped us lay it out and place the machines where they needed to go to optimize production. It works very well; steel processes and flows through the shop very quickly. It’s just a great, great layout and I’m pleased with how everything worked out with peddinghaus.”

Raptor Software Paired for Precision Software is becoming an essential component to a modern fabricator’s operation. Software advancements contain features that can extend a CNC investment even further. With a newly acquired CNC installation, Steve credits peddinghaus’ Raptor 3D CAD/CAM Software for taking his production to the next level. “With the detailing software that is out there now and Raptor, it allows for precise measurements and allows for precision products,” Steve describes.

“ultimately, what that means in the end is that the steel fits when it gets to the field. The erectors don’t struggle and they aren’t thinking about if the finished parts are right or wrong; it’s always right. In the end it saves money, and eliminates down time and frustration. Raptor, it’s just a very good product.”

Producing Profits with PeddinghausFollowing the recession, SL Chasse remained strong as competition began to slowly disappear from the New England area. Steve credits automation with the ability to compete with ‘bigger players’ and produce more projects with higher tonnages. With the use of their peddinghaus CNC technology and efficient layout, Steve and his team are able to utilize outdoor material storage and automatic material handling to maximize shop floor space. Their recent installation of an ‘Advantage-2’ pCD-1100C high-speed drill line, a AbCM-1250 thermal coping line, an Anglemaster-643/Q angle line and a Fpb-1500 high-speed plate processor have already increased revenue for the business.

“We finished installing all of the equipment in March 2014,” Steve recalled. “The last three quarters of the year our revenue increased 23% just by installing the equipment. This year, we are on track to doing another 20-23% in revenue growth. It’s been an amazing ride to watch what we can do after we automated to the point we are now ”

STEEL LLCCaNaM Company Scoring Big in Steel

When one thinks of Atlanta, Georgia, what comes to mind? The city rich in history and southern hospitality? The home of the Atlanta Falcons NFL team? Or Hartsfield-Jackson: the world’s renowned busiest airport? How about the home of a premier structural steel fabricator who helped create the structures that fill the city’s skyline?

Steel LLC, a leading fabricator out of the Atlanta suburb, Scottdale, has been adding to their repertoire of reputable work since the company’s origination in 1947. Recent projects include the famed Atlanta Falcons Mercedes-benz Stadium, the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport expansion, a NASA vehicle Assembly building and an Amazon Fulfillment Center to name a few. Needless to say, Scott Godfrey, president of Steel LLC, and his team are a winning combination in the structural steel market with a ‘Steelmark’ logo to sport.

Competing across the U.S.Steel LLC’s services span across the united States with a primary focus in the southeastern region. Industries include aviation, aerospace, commercial, education, government, healthcare, hospitality and industrial divisions. The CANAM-owned company is able to tackle timely deadlines for each sector by reaching a tonnage capacity of 20,000 tons per year; but how do they do it? Scott explains, “Our peddinghaus technology has certainly made us more efficient, more up-to-date. We compete with leading fabricators today and five years ago, we couldn’t; we didn’t have the same equipment that our competitors had.”

19

20

Pushing Past Manual Processing Steel LLC has changed ownership over the years but its message has remained the same: employee safety first, customers second, profit third. Fulfilling its motto, the company recognized that manual processing methods were extremely labor intensive and were increasingly becoming a productivity challenge. In 2006, they began looking for CNC solutions to incorporate into their fabrication shop. Following research and reviews of industry options, Steel LLC

purchased its first piece of CNC equipment, a peddinghaus drill line.

Steel llC Grows and Gains a Business PartnerNine years later, Steel LLC has assembled an automation lineup including two high-speed carbide drill lines, two double miter structural band saws, a coping machine, an angle/detail line and a punch plate machine. Working with peddinghaus’ custom design layout engineers, Steel LLC developed a modular system that enables them

to streamline processing and maximize efficiency while increasing productivity. “As president, we’ve maintained a good relationship with peddinghaus,” states Scott. “They’ve done an excellent job in educating me; they’ve helped us with our plant layout and their service performance has been excellent. I believe peddinghaus equipment is the best.”

expanding into New MarketsWith the use of the newly-acquired technology, Steel LLC relies on the

trusted peddinghaus brand to embark on complicated projects and expand into markets in which they could never before compete. “The machines keep ahead of our fitters and welders; it has made a difference in both increased accuracy and production,” explained José Guzman, General Manager. “The quality of work and our ability to meet deadlines is what sets us apart from others in the industry.”

“The Jackson Mississippi Federal Courthouse was a very heavy project; we used our first drill on that project,” Scott

recalls. “It was a very complicated project and the drill helped us a great deal. More recently, working on the NASA vAb (vehicle Assembly building) our coping machine working on skewed cuts and bevels has just been incredible; it’s been a lifesaver for us.”

Production PrideThe future for Steel LLC seems victorious with peddinghaus CNC equipment and a strong team of employees. With a current roster of 150 employees, Steel LLC maintains the pride and ownership of the work it produces. “business is doing well,”

Scott relays, “We have a good backlog with a good margin. It’s better than it’s been in the past five years.”

Next time you’re traveling in or around the Atlanta area, be sure to try an authentic Georgia peach and stop by Steel LLC. “I’d like for everyone who does business with us to come by,” Scott welcomes, “Meet the wonderful people in our plant and shake their hands. They are very proud of what they do ”

Meet teRRY CHiNN – PeDDiNGHaUS VP OF OPeRatiONSThe Wall Street Journal states the average U.S. worker will have an average of seven careers throughout his or her life. terry Chinn is the exception to this statistic. the Vice President of Operations at Peddinghaus has a career boasting 41 years to date. While most would be envisioning an approaching retirement with white, sandy beaches, palm trees and the like, terry likes to focus on daily career challenges or as he states, ‘opportunities’.

terry’s manufacturing interest began with his grandfather’s employment at Peddinghaus. Beginning his career in the stockroom, terry has climbed his way through multiple positions within Peddinghaus including Production expeditor, assistant Production Manager, Production Coordinator, Systems Planner and into his current role as VP of Operations.

terry currently directs and oversees the entire manufacturing process for Peddinghaus’ global headquarters. in a position that is vital to Peddinghaus’ manufacturing success, terry humbly notes, “the ‘Power of Peddinghaus’ is in its employees. it is these people that give life to the buildings, machines and operations. Without them, it is cold steel and concrete. every employee contributes in the success of the company.”

Over 40 years, Peddinghaus’ production has notably evolved. During this time, terry has witnessed equipment growth along with the increased demand for Peddinghaus technology. a skillful and cross-trained workforce is credited to meet the timely industry requests. But what terry is most proud of during his career longevity are the people that he’s worked alongside. “all i have to do is look around, whether it is the facilities in Bradley, Kankakee or South Carolina. the buildings, equipment, machines and our people – that is what i am proud of.”

the Walt Disney enthusiast and well-respected family man summarizes his experience thus far with Peddinghaus as a “wonderful journey”. “i have met so many people – i have seen young people get their first job, grow up, get married, have kids, become grandparents and unfortunately i’ve attended a few funerals along the way. When you look at a grave stone, there is a large number showing your birth and another, your death; in between is a little dash that represents your life. take advantage of each and every day. time goes by so quickly. Do not forget about family as these are the people that support you each and every day.

the best advice i can give would be when it is time to work, work hard. When it is time to play, play hard. enjoy life ”

Why do you think Legos are the number one toy in the world? Kids love to make things – buildings, bridges, cars, rockets, robots...wait, isn’t that the same things our fabricators and manufacturers are building today?

Get Kids into Your ShopAs an industry, we need to keep that “building spirit” alive in today’s young people. Manufacturing Day, sponsored by the FMA, encourages shops to open their doors for the next generation to see the wonderful opportunities offered in metal fabrication and manufacturing careers. peddinghaus regularly opens our doors to students as well as on Manufacturing Day (October 2).

I’m lucky enough to have grandchildren and can explore with them as they grow older. What an awe-inspiring experience to see life through their eyes. Ever take a seven and nine year old through a fabrication or machine shop? Watch their faces as they see steel being cut, welded, and fabricated. They are fascinated and will carry that enthusiasm with them... with some gentle reminders along the way.

As a generation, what have we done to solve the problem? It’s easy to be an old fart, sit back, and complain about young people and Millennials. How about remaining active and contributing to their future by avidly participating in the lives of young people? A little interaction in a young person’s life goes a very long way.

Be Part of the SolutionWill we need more welders, fabricators, and knowledgeable shop personnel in the future? You know it. Can we make a difference now? Absolutely! Our job as adults is to maintain industry enthusiasm in the next generation.

As a philosopher from the 1960’s said, “If you’re not part of the solution – you’re part of the problem” Time to be part of the solution
