Reference for Rowan Carew - July 2016 Rowan was an outstanding mentor for a group of Year 8 pupils. He worked with twelve pupils aged between 12 and 13 years for one week between 13 th and 19 th June. The pupils were taken off timetable and put into groups that they did not usually work with and were led by Rowan. His group had three tasks – to put together a curriculum based project on the theme of ‘the heart and being human’, to design a computer presentation and to put together a formal presentation to parents on what they had learned during the week. He managed the group exceptionally well, making sure that every child contributed to the group, even those who lacked confidence or who did not have English as their first language. He identified and helped pupils who found it difficult and put in strategies to give them confidence, supporting all pupils in developing their self-esteem. His enthusiasm was infectious and he was totally committed to seeing the project through – even when the pupils were tired or found it hard to concentrate, he motivated them and helped develop a real sense of team ethos. He listened to and helped the pupils resolve a range of issues that resulting from the group dynamic and was always positive and focused on ensuring a successful outcome. He has excellent communication skills and liaised with both pupils and teachers very effectively. He introduced the group presentation to the parents at the end of the week and spoke with confidence and flair. Throughout, Rowan worked independently, taking responsibility for his group’s performance. His organisation, time management and interpersonal skills were outstanding. He offered advice and guidance to young people who were finding working together difficult and he quickly gained their confidence. He was flexible in his approach and found creative and imaginative solutions to problems. He had an exemplary work ethic and a highly professional approach to the role. I would highly recommend him for his commitment, his positivity, his caring approach and his ability to get the job done. Clare Sherwood Deputy Head (Academic) Blundell’s School 3 rd July 2016

Rowan was an outstanding mentor for a group of Year 8 pupils. He worked with twelve

pupils aged between 12 and 13 years for one week between 13th and 19th June. The pupils

were taken off timetable and put into groups that they did not usually work with and were

led by Rowan. His group had three tasks – to put together a curriculum based project on the

theme of ‘the heart and being human’, to design a computer presentation and to put

together a formal presentation to parents on what they had learned during the week.

He managed the group exceptionally well, making sure that every child contributed to the

group, even those who lacked confidence or who did not have English as their first

language. He identified and helped pupils who found it difficult and put in strategies to give

them confidence, supporting all pupils in developing their self-esteem. His enthusiasm was

infectious and he was totally committed to seeing the project through – even when the

pupils were tired or found it hard to concentrate, he motivated them and helped develop a

real sense of team ethos. He listened to and helped the pupils resolve a range of issues that

resulting from the group dynamic and was always positive and focused on ensuring a

successful outcome. He has excellent communication skills and liaised with both pupils and

teachers very effectively. He introduced the group presentation to the parents at the end of

the week and spoke with confidence and flair.

Throughout, Rowan worked independently, taking responsibility for his group’s

performance. His organisation, time management and interpersonal skills were outstanding.

He offered advice and guidance to young people who were finding working together difficult

and he quickly gained their confidence. He was flexible in his approach and found creative

and imaginative solutions to problems. He had an exemplary work ethic and a highly

professional approach to the role. I would highly recommend him for his commitment, his
