I paise You, for I am wonderfully made

Oh, wow. Look at today’s Psalm response: “I praise You, for I am wonderfully made.”

These are not exactly the easiest words to utter. Sure, we have no problem praising God in thanksgiving for all of the gifts we have around us — our family, our health, the material things like a roof over our heads or a car to get us to our jobs. But in society, where we are constantly finding the quickest way to improve ourselves, it’s very difficult to first acknowledge that we’re wonderfully made and then to thank God for making us this way. It's much easier for me to focus on my flaws and shortcomings. And it’s much easier to blame Him for making me this way.

So, I’m going to spend this week letting go of the self-doubt and shaming and look at myself as a truly beautiful and perfect creation of God. “God made dirt, so dirt don’t hurt.” Remember that old adage? Well, God made me, so I am as wonderfully made as are the birds that sing. I have a purpose, a calling on this Earth — a purpose that only I can fulfill in the most perfect way I know how.

Peace,

Jaime GonzalezAssistant Director of Liturgy and Music

LITURGY CONNECTION

The Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary TimeJune 17, 2018 ~ Cycle B

This WeekendSpecial Collection: “Peter’s Pence”

This weekend is the Peter’s Pence Collection, which provides the Holy Father with the funds he needs to carry out his charitable works. The proceeds benefit the most disadvantaged: victims of war, oppression, and natural disasters. In many places around the globe, the Church struggles to be a visible sign of Christ’s peace: in poor dioceses where many depend on the Church for social and pastoral support; in regions where Catholics are persecuted and must be helped discreetly, in nations overloaded with refugees or victims of war and natural disasters.

Through your generosity, we can help to cast the peace of Christ upon the world.

Lectors and Eucharistic MinistersMSP ~ Ministry Scheduler Pro

MSP stands for Ministry Scheduler Pro. This is the wonderful software program that helps us schedule all 344 of you into 96 different serving positions each week. Not a small task!

Lectors and Eucharistic Ministers: it is very helpful if you can review your “My Profile” in MSP and update the section with your “unavailable dates/times.” It helps the scheduling software do its job in accommodating everyone’s needs. You can do this continuously as your schedule changes ... this helps the program in finding “subs” too.

If you are challenged by the Ministry Scheduler Pro software, please feel free to ask for help. Just email or call Rosa at the Casa and she will gladly give you a private tutorial — and, if there are a few of you, she can schedule this for a small group. Just ask. You can call Rosa at her direct line at the Casa at 480.355.5642, or email her at [email protected].

Are you interested in becoming a Roman Catholic? If you have interest in becoming a Roman Catholic, you are invited to consider the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). The “RCIA” is the sacramental formation process that prepares individuals for living the Christian life in the Roman Catholic community and tradition.

The RCIA sessions will begin on Tuesdays, starting the first week of October, from 7 - 9 pm. The first four “inquiry sessions” are open and you are invited and encouraged to attend all four sessions, but are welcome to begin attending anytime during those four weeks. These inquiry sessions are designed to help you discern whether or not you want to continue on this journey in faith through full initiation into the Roman Catholic Church at Easter. For more information, you can email us at [email protected].

RCIA Sponsors will be needed tooWe will also be seeking community members from the Church of Our Lady of the Angels to walk with these individuals as sponsors on this journey in faith. Sponsor training will begin in October as well. For more information, you can email us at: [email protected].

“Taizé Prayer Around the Cross” Wednesday, June 27 at 6:30 pm

We gather in the church on the fourth Wednesday of every month, and the service lasts about 30 minutes.

Taizé prayer consists of meditative singing and periods of silence in order to reach a contemplative state. Short chants, repeated over and over, give a meditative character. Using just a few words, the chants express a basic reality of faith, quickly grasped by the mind. As the words are sung many times, this reality gradually penetrates the whole being. All are welcome to join in this unique prayer!

FAMILY CATECHESIS & SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION

Family Faith Activities June 24Nativity of John the Baptist

Think about the birth of your children. What a wondrous gift they are to you and to the world! Each child is filled with the potential to change the world by spreading the Kingdom of God. Some children have a larger role than others, such as John the Baptist. The first clue is his birth to Elizabeth, who is way beyond child-bearing age. The second clue is naming the baby John, going against all tradition to use a family name. John means “God’s grace.” John is truly graced by God and grows to be an instrument of that grace.

Finally, we know that John grows and becomes strong in spirit—his voice crying out, telling the world to prepare the way of the Lord. John knows who he is and refuses to accept the adulation of the crowds, instead always pointing to the one who is coming—Jesus. St. Francis also always pointed to God, never to himself or his brothers. So, too, are we called to always point the way to Jesus, going beyond ourselves to share the love of God, starting within our families and moving outward.

Gather your family and ask, “Have you ever had good news to share?”

Read Luke 1:57-66,80 and discuss:• Who is going to be

born?• Who wants the child to

be named John?• What do the neighbors and relatives think?• How does John grow up?

What’s in a Name? Look up what your names mean in a baby book. Do your names imply that you have a purpose of connection to something else? If you could rename yourselves, how would you like to be labeled as children of God? Now, tell them how you came to choose each child’s name, sharing some of the hopes and dreams that you have for them. Concluding prayer: Let us pray. Loving God, thank You for reaching out to us with love. Help us to love and follow You. In the name of Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.

Cookbook on Conversation – recipes for dinnertime faith discussions

What does your dinnertime look like? Does it look hurried, kids distracted, the cook busy trying to serve? What a great time to share your

faith in the messiness of daily life. Use these tips and conversation starters and see what you create. Be ready for God’s grace to be a guest at your table. 1. Start with a prayer: Bless us, O Lord! And these Thy gifts for which we are about to receive, from Thy bounty through Christ, our Lord. Amen. 2. Be prepared to be a great listener.• Stop what you are doing.• Look at the speaker straight in the eye and pay attention to

nonverbal messages.• Don’t prepare your response. Just listen!• Don’t interrupt but ask questions to encourage more

conversations.3. Set up a fun way to “open your cookbook.”• Print questions on index cards or popsicle sticks for a random

draw, or put in a jar to pull out.• Have a different person choose a question (or two) each day. 4. Just do it!5. Finish dinner with a dessert—aka a short closing prayerRecipe ideas:• What is your favorite prayer?• How do you talk to God in prayer?• Why do you think Jesus loves us so much?• What is one question you would like to ask God?• What is a time when Jesus answered your prayers in an

unexpected way?• Why is it important to go to Mass each Sunday?• Who is your favorite saint and why?• How do you think your guardian angel watches over you?• What is your favorite Bible story?• Where did you see the face of God today?• How did you spread God’s love today?

Thank you for praying for our middle school students at camp! We had such a blast singing, dancing, throwing water balloons, and praying for all of you. Here are some of our kids playing bubble balls on the big field.

VOLUNTEER VOICE – Ordinary People, Extraordinary Hearts!

YOUTH MINISTRY

Meet Your Board Members—Don Petersen Don Petersen is a member of the FRC Board of Directors and serves on the Finance Committee.

“I joined the Finance Committee and the governing Board just when we were about to commit to the capital campaign to build the new church, the new Assisi Building, and the Community Life Center. It was exciting for me to help build and take the church that I have loved since 1987 into the future, and to be able to accommodate others that feel the same spiritually that I do. The

transformation that the Casa has undergone these past seven years has been a highlight of my life. I believe I have received many-fold the benefit than what I have contributed. Thank you FRC!” — Don Petersen

The BF&G Committee, along with other Board committees, are looking for dedicated community members who may be discerning a call to leadership. If you would like to discuss these opportunities further, please contact Bob Crawford, Board Member/Chair Board Formation and Governance at 480.203.7510.

Apache Fair Trade Crafting Co-op

This vital co-op helps the San Carlos Apache crafters advance their economy through

meaningful work. These artisans create handmade arts and crafts that are at the core of their ancestral spirituality.

The Apache Fair Trade volunteers support the co-op members by selling their crafts at the Casa, typically between October and May. Sales are held in conjunction with other community activities, retreats, or outside groups visiting the Casa.

Since last October, the volunteers have held 16 sales and sold $10,723 worth of Apache crafts.

If you like to sell and promote handcrafts and/or like inventory management, this may be the volunteer ministry for you.

Contact [email protected] and request information on volunteering in the ministry.

Help Bridge the Nutrition GapHunger Summer Service Opportunities

The Casa Hunger Action Ministry (HAM) is planning opportunities for service this summer. June/July service is scheduled with Desert Mission Food Bank and with St. Mary's Food Bank.

Thursday, June 28, 9 to 11 am(St. Mary's — packing emergency boxes) Age 12 years+

Tuesday, July 10, 9 to 11 am(Desert Mission — Sorting and Packing Food Items) Age 14 years+

Email Dolores to sign-up: [email protected]

The link between hunger and poor health is undeniable.

Desert Mission and SMFB combat hunger across the income spectrum by helping to bridge nutrition gaps that negatively affect the health and well-being of community residents.

Faith is not a light which scatters all our darkness, but a lamp which guides our steps in the night ...for the journey. (57)

THE LIGHT OF FAITH Five years ago, in June 2013, Pope Francis released the encyclical Lumen Fidei, or The Light of Faith.

Faith is the light that illumines our journey in life and provides clarity to all aspects of human existence. Faith, as Pope Francis describes it, is relational. God enters human history and invites each person to participate in His plan of love. Faith comes from an encounter with God (38) and from those people who have come before us who have themselves encountered God. God called Abraham and gave him a promise (52, 54). God saved the Israelites and gave them a promise. God became man and gave up His life as a promise of our salvation (58).

The intrinsic connections between faith and truth, that faith enables us to see reality more deeply, to know the good, and thus, secure in this knowledge, we stand firm in the course of our lives (25). Faith leads us out of ourselves and inspires us to help others, to build a better society, because faith helps us to see the dignity in others; it helps us to see everyone we encounter as a blessing from God (51).

When we offer faith, in action, as a gift of love to the world, such faith becomes "a star to brighten the horizon of our journey" at a time when the world is in need of light (4).

People of PeaceSunday, October 21, 12 pm - 4:30 pmMauro Pando and Dr. Albert Celoza

Come hear the words that will open your heart and mind.Powerful icons of Peace and Nonviolence:Oscar Romero and Lay missionary Jean Donovan, Maryknoll Sisters Ita Ford and Maura Clark, and Ursuline Sister Dorothy Kazel will be highlighted in this session of People of Peace.

Not too much has been spoken about the women. Their work of peace was abruptly and violently stopped when they were abducted, raped, and murdered by government forces on December 2, 1980. Their witness to faith continues to be honored by the Church. Salvadorans continue to celebrate the lives of the four church women almost as much as they do the life of Oscar Romero.

Lunch in the Casa dining room followed by a presentation about these extraordinary people of peace.

Fee per person: $45 includes lunch. Pre-registration required.

St. Francis Retreat: Why Be Franciscan?Friday, September 28—Sunday, September 30Br. Casey Cole, OFM

Casey grew up in Lancaster, PA. In 2011, he earned a bachelor’s degree in religious studies with a minor in poverty studies from Furman University in Greenville, S.C. Patrick Tuttle, OFM, pastor of nearby St. Anthony of Padua Church, and spend a summer at the parish as an intern. Of the experience, Casey says, “Communal life offered a joy and challenge that rejuvenated me after a full day’s work, and fulfilled me more than I could have imagined.” He also spent a summer volunteering at St. Francis Inn, a soup kitchen in Philadelphia, PA, run by the friars. Casey is a master’s student in divinity at The Catholic University of America, and teaches faith formation classes at St. Camillus Church in Silver Spring, MD, preparing high school boys for confirmation.

VISION CORNER

by the Faith in Action ministry. The Franciscana Guaymas Medical Ministry has enabled us to serve those beyond our borders by hosting families whose children are undergoing medical treatment. We also have been enriched by serving in various ministries within the Casa community.

Few places provide the life-changing opportunities that we have experienced at the Casa. We enthusiastically give our legacy gift to the Casa, knowing that the Casa’s La Verna Society and Endowment Program will sustain the various ministries and programs that enhance the lives of so many.

To learn more about how the endowment works and how to become a member of the La Verna Society, please contact Mary Dunn at 480.355.0345, or [email protected]. We also encourage you to visit the Casa website under the following link to learn more about legacy giving at the Casa: http://frclegacy.org.

— Bill Anger

Nancy and I first became acquainted with the Casa in the 1980s, when we moved to Phoenix from Chicago. We were drawn to the community’s spirit and immediately recognized how much we could learn and

grow by becoming part of that community. I went through the RCIA program at the Casa with Nancy as my sponsor in the mid-1990s. That experience led to our participation in various programs and volunteer opportunities that have deepened our connection to the community and enriched our spiritual lives.

The Casa’s mission of spiritual growth, healing and transformation, and service to others has given us an awareness of the needs of the larger community. The Just Faith program educated us on various social justice issues that are ever-present in this country and the world. The program prompted us to engage in service opportunities offered

Catholic retreat center in Scottsdale. Now, as the Franciscan Renewal Center (still affectionately called the Casa) we offer opportunities for spiritual growth, healing and transformation that moves lives into the service of others.

The Casa was founded by and is today an active religious community of the Order of Friars Minor — part of the worldwide Franciscan family, following the footsteps of Saints Francis and Clare of Assisi. The Casa is a wholly owned entity of the Franciscan Friars Province of Saint Barbara, based in Oakland, California, that works cooperatively with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix.

Activities at the Casa include daily Mass, Sunday services, private retreats, gathering space for non-profit groups, as well as volunteer ministries that assist the poor or vulnerable, empower individuals to improve their circumstances, care for the environment, and build community fellowship.
