CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Rationale

The internet has fast become a prevalent medium for collaboration between people and

social networks, in particular, have gained vast popularity and relevance over the past few years.

The popularity of online social networking sites (SNSs) is constantly growing. Facebook,

MySpace, LinkedIn, Friendster, Cloudworks, Twitter, and Ning are but a few examples of the

relatively new phenomenon of online social networking. People of all ages are flocking to the

internet and are signing up for social networking sites by the millions. Within this framework,

our paper will analyze the role played by the internet in the academic life of a second year

chemical engineering student. Specifically, we focus on the impact of internet and know how

they contribute to the academic life of the student. However, we still know very little about how

this state of affairs affects student experience and, in particular, how it impacts on their academe.

SNSs seem to be used rather informally, more as a means of socializing and talking to friends

about work than for actually doing work.

Theoretical Framework

This research is anchored on Amber Naslund’s Social Media Time Management 1guiding

Principles. The following are the 9 principles:

1) Manage Disruptions

In order to manage disruptions, you have to prioritize things that are important. You have to focus

on it over unimportant matters.Since informations are continually being acquired, the ability to

draw distinctions between important and unimportant information is vital. In addition, critical

thinking is a need on recognition how new informations alter your stored knowledge.2

2) Control Information Overload

To focus, you have to avoid media multi-tasking.If necessary open two or three sites to attain

your information needs. In social media, information overload is yours to own and manage.Have a

system that works for you and stick to it. Make sure that you know how you manage your workload and

make sure you follow it. 3

3) Leverage Tools

You can use apps or software that may set time limits in using internet.

4) Annotate and Share

You can use apps that will offer automatic sharing for your work so that you will spend less

time. The less time you spend looking for stuff, the more time you have to do stuff.

5) Sometimes Templates are Okay

This pertains to personalizing your social networking accounts for the purpose of controlled

publicity.

Page 4: Reed

6) Wrangle Task Management

When you have so much to do in the internet, you have to do one asks at a time so that you can

keep your focus.

7) Communicate Expectations

Communicate to others regarding your tasks.Honesty and humility go a long way to helping

manage expectations for responsiveness online.

8 ) Establish Routines

This means ,do your stuffs at limited time as a routine.

9) Unplug.

You need perspective from an unplugged view so you priorities stay in focus. You have to make

time yourself away from internet world. You also needed time to rest.Make sure that you don’t

neglect your health. The moment you are ill or tired, your productivity drops and your effectiveness

lessens. 4

CHAPTER 2

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

Statement of the Problem

This study focused on determining the effects of social networking sites in the

academic life of the 2nd year chemical engineering students during the school year 2014-2015. It

also aimed to determine the average time the students consume on social networking sites.

4 John Odair , John Adair’s 100 Greatest Ideas for Effective Leadership and Management,Capstone:2011

Page 5: Reed

Consequently, it provides effects, whether indulgence to social networking sites is a bane or a

boon.

Generally, the researchers sought answer to the question:

“How do social networking sites affect a student’s academic life?”

Significance of the Study

Scopes and Limitations

The researched content is focused on how the internet affects the academic life of the

respondents. This study is only limited to the Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering

Second Year Students of the University Of San Carlos Talamban Campus during the school year

2014 - 2015.

Definition of Terms

Internet

A global system of interconnected computer networks. It is a network of networks that

consists of millions of private, public, academic, business, and government networks of

local to global scope, linked by a broad array of electronic, wireless, and optical

networking technologies. The Internet carries an extensive range of information

resources and services, such as the inter-linked hypertext documents and applications of

the World Wide Web (WWW), the infrastructure to support email, and peer-to-

peer networks for file sharing and telephony.

 Social networking site

Page 6: Reed

is the phrase used to describe any Web sitethat enables users to create public profiles

within that Web site and form relationships with other users of the same Web site who

access their profile. Social networking sites can be used to describe community-based

Web sites, online discussions forums, chatrooms and other social spaces online.

Procrastination

putting off or delaying, especially something requiring immediate attention.

Society of the Divine Word (SVD)

popularly called Verbites or the Divine Word Missionaries.  It is the largest missionary

congregation in the Catholic Church

Reciprocity in social psychology

refers to responding to a positive action with another positive action, rewarding kind

actions. As a social construct, reciprocity means that in response to friendly actions,

people are frequently much nicer and much more cooperative than predicted by the self-

interest model; conversely, in response to hostile actions they are frequently much more

nasty and even brutal.

Bane

a cause of great distress or annoyance. Bad or harmful.

Boon

Page 7: Reed

a thing that is helpful or beneficial.

Review of Related Literature and Studies

One of the purposes of browsing the internet by people especially among students is the

use of social networking sites.Social networking exist so as to provide communication among

people regardless of the distance, making it open to people easily share information, files and

pictures and videos, create blogs and send messages, and conduct real-time

Page 8: Reed

conversations.5Students engage in social networking sites such as twitter, facebook, instagram

and etc.

Engagement of students to social networking sites has benefits .One of its benefits is

faculty-student communication outside the classroom.Use of SNS: encourages contacts between

students and faculty, develops reprocity and coopertion among students, uses active learning

techniques, gives prompt feedback, emphasizes time on task, communicates high expectations and

respect diverse talents and ways of learning.6Another,Social media can help us fall closer to one

another, creating a sense of the human family which can in turn inspire solidarity and serious

efforts to ensure a more dignified life for all.Good communication help us to grow closer,to

know one another better, and ultimately to grow in unity.7

Through SNSs, students can discuss to each other educational related topics. It allows

cooperation in the sense of distributed cognition, by exposing the user to creative people, but at

the same time it encourages the user to adopt and adapt to existing ideas through dialogues in

various fora.8With this, students has the opportunity of widening their knowledge through

sharing of ideas with others.

We spend time in doing task. There is an appointed time for everything9.People only

need to manage this time for the tasks you need to do.But all things should be done decently and

in order10.Successful time management will help you to become more effective in completing the

tasks that you have to complete so there is more time available for you to spend on the things

that are important to you11.Individual differences in aspects of time management have been

identified in learning settings, procrastination being one of the most important.12This

means, procrastination depends on a person’s skill in time management.

SNS can bring negative effects on students. One implication is that students tend to

procrastinate using SNS .Procrastination has typically been defined as a trait or behavioural

disposition to postpone or delay performing a task or making decisions13.Procrastination in the

academic realm holds many negative consequences including lost time, increased stress, lower

grades, poorer health, decreased long-term learning and lower self-esteem.14There are two sorts

of procrastination behaviors, passive and active. Passive procrastinators are paralyzed by their

indecision and as a result fail to complete tasks on time while active procrastinators prefer to

work under pressure and make deliberate decisions to complete their tasks on time.15

Media Multi-tasking is defined as engaging in multiple media activities

simultaneously, including multiple windows on a single media platform and/or multiple

media16.Heavy media multitaskers showed increased susceptibility to interference from irrelevant

environmental stimuli and performed worse when tested for task-switching ability. It is thought

that the latter occurred due to “reduced ability to filter out interference from the irrelevant task

set.”17 Research on multitasking in the adult population generally indicates that multitasking impairs

the speed and quality of task performance when compared to performing tasks serially . 18A

research was conducted to 27 users over a two-week period , exploring the suspension, recovery,

and resumption of tasks in participants’ natural work settings. The researchers found out that users

spent an average of 10 minutes on switches caused by alerts, and spent on average another 10 to

15 minutes before returning to focused activity on the disrupted task. They found that 27% of task

suspensions resulted in more than two hours of time until resumption. In interviews, users

attributed long delays to the loss of context associated with the task switch.

Church teaching

Students regard time management as problem .The problem is not always an excess of activity, but rather

activity undertaken badly, without a dequate motivation, without a spirituality which would permeate it

and make it pleasurable. As a result, work becomes more tiring than necessary, even leading at times to

illness. Far from a content and happy tiredness, this is a tense, burdensome, dissatisfying and, in the

Interpretation/Discussions

Conclusion

Recommendation

In the light of the findings and conclusion of the study, the following recommendations

are given:

Establish priorities

Not all tasks are essential. Make a prioritized list. Some tasks can wait. Some tasks can be

delegated. Some tasks can be tossed. Time management will be easy then.

Plan ahead

Creating a plan will balance your workload and minimize the possibility for those dreaded, but

sometimes necessary, all-night cram sessions

Make Schedules

Stay dedicated to the time that you set aside for your work”. Take charge and give yourself some

guidelines. But also make your schedule flexible, we don’t know what may happen like

emergencies.

Page 17: Reed

Make Checklists

This is helpful way of remembering everything you need to get done. “You can check [each

item] off after you’re done with it, it helps us see how much we have left to do, but it also allows

us to appreciate each little accomplishment along the way.

Schedule time for Leisure

Of course you also need to loosen up for some time. Take time to relax, refresh you mind, body

and spirit. Give yourself some rewards for the hard time that you did.

Be Healthy

This may seem like the kind of advice you heard from your parents and now pass down to your

own kids like daily vitamins year-round, but it can actually play a huge role in successfully

managing your time while in college. Practicing regular exercise can keep your energy levels up,

resulting in a more engaged mind when doing school work. Many also assert that getting

adequate sleep at night can save college students time—this not only helps you avoid the time

taken for afternoon naps, but it also can increase your alertness and decrease your stress levels.

When Opening the internet make time also to visit religious sites….

This will also help us to understand more about God. To know Him, and love Him more.
