Mission
The Company of the Redwood Library and Athenæum is an educational and cultural institution that remains true to its 1747 Colonial charter establishing a library for “propagating Virtue, Knowledge and useful Learning.”
Purpose
Reflecting its history and traditions, the Redwood Library and Athenæum is a library, a museum, and a historic building. Each of these aspects of its identity is key to the institution’s future, as well as to understanding its past. In order to encourage public access to its building, programs, and collections, the Library actively pursues policies and opportunities to increase its presence in the national and international educational and cultural environment by expanding, cataloging, preserving, and disseminating its collections and programs.
The Redwood Library and Athenæum celebrated the 265th anniversary of its Charter on August 24, 2012. From its incorporation in 1747 by a group of 46 colonists to its standing today as the oldest continuously operating lending library in its original building in America, the Redwood remains dedicated to fulfilling its Charter, “having nothing in view but the good of Mankind.”

George Washington; copied from the original by Houdon (1788) in the state capitol at Richmond by special permission of the General Assembly of Virginia, gift of Roderick Terry, 1932.
“The Generous Mr. Abraham Redwood, of Newport, on Rhode Island, sensible of the distinguished favour whereby
Heaven had bless’d him with an ample fortune, proposed to acknowledge it by a design which could be only the
genuine effect of a gratefull mind, the improving the place of his residence in knowledge and virtue, that from the
Inhabitants some Revenue of honour might return and be paid to the Donor of all mercies.
“To accomplish this happy end, he freely and without a prompter, devoted and paid down Five Hundred pounds
Sterling, for purchasing a Library of all arts and sciences, put under the most prudent Limitation and Restriction,
whereunto the curious and impatient inquirer after resolution of doubts, and the bewildered ignorant might freely
repair for discovery and demonstration to the one, and true knowledge and satisfaction to the other, nay to inform
the mind in both, in order to reform the practice.”

L E T T E R F R O M T H E P R E S I D E N T
The Redwood has enjoyed another terrific year: stimulating exhibitions, sold-out programs and events, meaningful collaborations with other institutions, and the continued support of our many members, donors, visitors, and friends. The Redwood brought scholars, artists, authors, neighbors and friends together in a true “athenæum model.”
Many thanks are in order for the hundreds of individual contributions, gifts, grants, and in-kind donations given by our supporters over the year. Generosity enables the Library to offer the wildly popular Life of the Mind Salons, a wide range of musical performances, author talks, documentary film screenings, and a calendar full of wonderful Children’s Library events. Donations and grants have been used to significantly upgrade the audio system in the Harrison and Reading Rooms and to catalog hundreds of important Special Collections holdings that were not previously available electronically. Our summer Gala was a smashing success, and our third annual history seminar, 18th-Century Rhode Island Furniture Makers, was a treat for all who attended. So much has been accomplished this year! I am grateful to the staff, Board, and volunteers for their tireless efforts, and I thank them for their enthusiastic dedication to the Redwood. And thank you, our members and friends, for supporting the Library through your attendance at these and other events, your generous contributions, and your unflagging dedication to this treasured cultural and historic institution.
The new fiscal year brings opportunity and excitement. Executive Director Jen Tuleja, who was instrumental in this year’s accomplishments, moved to Massachusetts to join her family. We will miss her energy and leadership and wish her the very best. A terrific new Executive Director, Benedict Leca, Ph.D., will join the Library in January. An expert in 18th-century art, Benedict is eager to move the Redwood into the national spotlight as a center of thought and culture. I know you will join me in welcoming him and his family to Newport.
The Redwood calendar is already packed with terrific programs for 2015. Look for more information soon on upcoming events, including a seminar on Naval Aviation, a Claggett Clock Forum, a Classical House series, and more. We look forward to seeing you frequently in the year ahead.

Exhibitions
Oliver Hazard Perry: Hero of Lake Erie July 3, 2013 - January 31, 2014Over sixty artifacts were assembled from private collections and institutional holdings in an exhibition that celebrated the life and legacy of Rhode Island’s greatest war hero, Oliver Hazard Perry. A superb oil painting of Perry by Jane Stuart (on loan from the Birmingham Museum of Art, donated to them by Redwood member Henry S. Lynn, Jr.), various items made from wood salvaged from the ship Lawrence, which was part of Perry’s squadron in the Battle of 1812, and a meticulously hand-worked infant jacket worn by Perry (on loan from a private collection) were among the items exhibited in the Van Alen Gallery from July 2014, until January 2015. Objects such as these attest to the tremendous adulation and fame that Perry attained after the Battle of 1812 and until his death at age 34 off the coast of Trinidad.
Portraits of Interiors: Interior Illustrators in Newport CollectionsMarch 7, 2014 - January 2015A fascination with artistic portrayals of notable interior spaces enticed guest curator Paul Miller to assemble a fine selection of art and furnishings for an exhibition in the Van Alen Gallery, which opened in March 2014 and will run through January 2015. Miller, who is curator at The Preservation Society of Newport County, borrowed works from several local cultural institutions, as well as many individuals. In addition to paintings, Miller gathered drawings, photographs, furniture, and textiles, and created two vignettes of furniture and decorative arts that are depicted in the paintings or inspired by them.
The R. Campbell James Library ExhibitionJanuary 15 - June 30, 2014A selection of volumes from the private collection of R. Campbell James, long-time Redwood member and supporter, was exhibited in the Rovensky Room vitrines in the fall of 2014. This exhibition included items from his extensive Southeast Asia collection and Greek and Latin classics, as well as a selection of numerous “nonsense” and humorous verse titles, all of which were donated to the Library by bequest in 2011.
Other vitrine exhibitions included Passion, featuring the work of artist Ben Butler and poet Susan Dye, A Public Place of Gathering: Touro Synagogue at 250, and a display of Christmas books from a private collection. An exhibition of Special Collections children’s books was on display in the Ballard Annex.
Notable Acquisitions
Original Collection ReplacementsThe Redwood Library purchased four replacement volumes for its Original Collection during the 2013-14 year. The detail shown is from a textbook by J.T. Phillips, tutor to the children of George II, one of whom was William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, for whose use he published this volume. Several titles in the Original Collection reflect a desire to have instructional materials for youth available at the Redwood. Other acquisitions include The British Apollo; Thomas Church’s An Appeal to the Serious and Unprejudiced: or, A Second Vindication of the Miraculous Powers; and The Court and City Register. For the year 1756.

In the fiscal year 2013-14, the Redwood Library & Athenæum had great success with programs, events, charitable donations, and planned improvements.
• The Original Collection was purchased in 1747 with £500 sterling donated by Abraham Redwood. It consisted of 751 titles, some of which went missing after the Library was used by British forces during the Revolutionary War. The Redwood has worked to purchase replacement copies as they have become available, using funds donated by generous members and supporters for this purpose. Four replacement copies of volumes long missing from the Original Collection were purchased during the year.
• The Library has begun collaborating with five other Newport cultural institutions - the Newport Art Museum, the Newport Historical Society, The Preservation Society of Newport County, and the Newport Restoration Foundation - in a project known as ‘Newportal.’ A shared digital database and portal is under development.
• Eighty manuscript collections equaling nearly 171.5 linear feet were processed thanks to funding from the van Beuren Charitable Foundation. The collections can be viewed in the Slocum Scholars’ Reading Room. The descriptions of the collections can be found online on the Library’s website and catalog, RIAMCO (Rhode Island Archives and Manuscripts Collection Online), and ArchiveGrid. Manuscripts collections available for research include the Gideon Wanton letters, James H. and Candace Van Alen papers, and the Birkhead collection of Redwood family papers.
• The Redwood was the beneficiary of a grant from The Champlin Foundations that enabled advanced audio systems to be installed in the Harrison and Roderick Terry Reading Rooms.
• A reception was held for Portraits of Interiors: Interior Illustrators in Newport Collections, which opened in March 2014. The exhibition was underwritten by David B. Ford, and the catalog was funded by George and Nannette Herrick.
• In a collaborative project with the John Carter Brown Library, 41 manuscripts from the Library’s Special Collections were cataloged and digitized and are now available via the Internet Archive, https://archive.org/details/redwoodlibrary. To date 1010 images have been downloaded from our digital collections.
• Funds were donated by George Herrick and Nicholas Scheetz to rebind eight mid-19th-century volumes of Notes & Queries, a scholarly journal that published short articles related to “English language and literature, lexicography, history, and scholarly antiquarianism.” Mr. Scheetz also donated funds to repair and rebind many rare 18th-century volumes of Gentleman’s Magazine.
• The renovation of the Ballard Annex, which houses the Children’s Library and administrative offices, is nearly complete thanks to the ongoing generosity of Les and Carol Ballard.
• Funding for Children’s Library programming was provided by a grant from the George L. Ohrstrom, Jr. Foundation.
• Fifteen Life of the Mind Salon programs were featured on Thursday evenings in the fall and spring, inviting members and visitors to share lively occasions of learning and conversation. Speakers included prominent artists, authors, physicians, historians, scientists, and military officers. Several members helped to underwrite this popular series, including Mary Brunell, Patricia Callahan, Lois Lang, Janet Pell, and Frank and Betsy Ray.
• An opening reception was held in the Van Alen Gallery for Oliver Hazard Perry: Hero of Lake Erie. The exhibition ran from July 2013 through January 2014 thanks to donations from David B. Ford, Esmond Harmsworth, George and Nannette Herrick, and Henry S. Lynn, Jr.
• Full-color gallery cards were produced for the Harrison Room, giving detailed information about the portraits, the artists, and the donors to the Collections.
9
• Two exhibitions were on display in the Rovensky Delivery Room vitrines: Passions, featuring the art of Ben Butler and the poetry of Susan Dye, and A Public Gathering Space: Touro Synagogue at 250, a historical overview of the oldest synagogue in America.
• The Redwood “Screen and Discuss” Documentary Film Series presented 11 films and offered a robust discussion following each viewing. The events were supported by donations from Brendan and Pamela Kelley, Denise Roberts, and Horan Building Company.
• Weekly programs, such as “If It’s Thursday, It Must be Shakespeare” and monthly programs, such as the Redwood Book Club, continue to be popular with members and visitors.
• The newly renovated Children’s Library in the Ballard Annex hosted a wide-reaching selection of activities, including weekly story time and dozens of craft, music, theatre, and guest-speaker programs, all open to the public.
• Over one hundred guests attended the third annual history seminar, 18th-Century Rhode Island Furniture Makers Seminar and Exhibition, which was held on June 6, 2014. Five speakers - Leslie Keno, Dennis Carr, Jeffrey Greene, Erik Gronning, and Patricia Kane - gave presentations at the Hotel Viking. An exhibition of 18th-century furniture followed at the Redwood.
• The Library continued to develop its holdings of art history and catalogue raisonné titles thanks to generous donations from many supporters, notably Laura Breyer, whose gifts have exponentially increased the Redwood’s collection in this genre.
• Over 700 titles are now available digitally through our 3M eBook system.
• Thousands of books and DVDs were donated to the Library, nearly 1,000 of them given by Lisette Prince.
• Dozens of generous tribute and memorial gifts were given to the Library to honor the friends and families of the donors.
• Fifty-seven periodical subscriptions were donated by members and supporters.
• Seven musical performances were held in the Harrison Room featuring soloists and ensembles playing a wide variety of selections.
• Two New Member Tours and Orientations were held to welcome members to the Library.
• Most of these activities could not have happened without the help of the Library’s wonderful volunteers. The Library is grateful to all who shared their time and talent throughout the year. A special note of gratitude is offered to Jack Sweeney, who manages the Library’s database, and to Wayne Robinson, who has catalogued its Shareholder history.
It has always been conceded that the Redwood Library has been a very useful Institution, diffusing knowledge and culture among all the families who have enjoyed its privileges, and even those who never purchased or contributed to its means, have honored it by always bringing their friends from abroad to inspect its treasures and enjoy the privileges which have been open to all. Our Library holds a position in the hearts of the community, for a great number of our stockholders are inheritors of their shares from an honored ancestry, who, in the early days of Newport, worshiped this Institution as their great treasure, although it was then comparatively far behind its present condition.
One hundred and fortieth Annual Report, made September 28, 1870. To the Company of the Redwood Library & Athenæum.

Charles Bird King Society: Planned GivingNewport native and renowned artist Charles Bird King (1785-1862) holds a special place in the Redwood Library’s long list of dedicated supporters. Described by President John Quincy Adams as “an ingenious, thinking man, with a faculty of conversing upon almost any topic,” King lived in New York, London and Washington, DC, but it was Newport that was dearest to his heart. Over the years, King contributed handsomely to the Library, giving money and books as well as scores of paintings. Upon his death in 1862, he gave the Redwood his own personal library, volumes of bound engravings, a significant sum of money, and 75 additional paintings.
The Redwood is deeply indebted to Charles Bird King and to all those who have helped it thrive for more than two and a half centuries by contributing to the endowment. It is fitting that the Library commends those who have made – or intend to make – such gifts by including them in the Charles Bird King Society. The following donors have honored the Library and helped to sustain its mission with bequests, planned gifts, or gifts to the endowment, thus joining the membership of the Charles Bird King Society. We are extremely grateful for their support.
For those who may be considering a gift to the Library’s endowment, please contact Caroline Considine, Director of Institutional Advancement, at 401.847.0292, ext.109, to discuss ways in which a gift may be made.

It was through the generosity of its donors that the Redwood Library was conceived and built over 267 years ago, and that same generous spirit enables it to thrive well into its third century. The following individuals, foundations, and corporations contributed gifts, grants, and pledges beyond the annual share or household membership dues to support the Library’s operations, collections, programs and exhibitions. The Redwood is deeply grateful to these benefactors, as its sustainability tomorrow is built upon the generosity of those here today.
