“The system you set us up with is working wonderfully!”
Andrew H. | ACT Laboratories
“Battery Backup Power, has been supplying our maintenance department with excellent double
conversion units that do a terrific job of protecting and backing up the power for phone systems, repeaters
and PA systems.
Besides the outstanding products, the service and support we receive from Ross, is unmatched.”
Rocky D. | Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District
“The UPS arrived, we got it hooked up, and its been tested a few times. We
are really happy to have that particular instrument on backup. We will be
ordering more units as soon as our funding is secured.”
Wendy | USGS
“I have been very pleased with the UPS unit. I have not had to concern myself with it ever since it was plugged in and the output verified. I need another one of the UPS units in Q1 next year. We are planning to purchase
another precision instrument.” Gee | Sample Tech Labs

Understanding the
Electric Utility Company Responsibilities:
Utility failures are the leading cause of California wildfires, customer owned electrical equipment failures (servers, networking equipment, lab instruments, etc.), downed power line electrocutions, and other electrical related incidents.
Generally, electric utility companies are responsible for losses that occur due to provable negligence and not causes beyond their control (weather related, accidents, third party negligence, etc). This means the customer has to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the damage was caused by the utility company’s negligence to begin to seek reparations. Anything related to weather is automatically thrown out.
If the utility company does eventually accept responsibility for damage to a customer’s personal property (servers, lab instruments, electrical systems, etc.), the utility company will compensate the customer for the cost of the following: repair, fair market value, or replacement. For items that are not new (this is pretty much everything) and cannot be repaired, fair market value is determined by the estimated value the item would have just prior to the damage occurring.
This means that if a server, lab instrument, or other equipment is proven to be damaged by the utility’s negligence beyond a reasonable doubt, only the hardware value of that equipment at the time it was damaged will be reimbursed. This does not include the revenue lost due the equipment’s failure, the cost to program/setup/install new replacement equipment, or any other cost associated with the failure and replacement.
For example, a server rack filled with $50,000 worth of IT equipment that produces $6,000,000 a year in revenue for a business may only result in a reimbursement check of about $5,000 after 2 years in court or settlement proceedings have proven the utility company was responsible for the equipment failure. This is due to the fact that the hardware value of the equipment at the time of the incident is the only cost considered. Fair market value of IT equipment is typically minimal as it is considered obsolete as soon as it is purchased. This typically results in a small to mid-sized business going out of business or a large business suffering irreparable damage to long term revenue generation.

Understanding theElectrical Utility Company’s Areas Of Responsibility:Below is a graphical representation of what the customer is responsible for compared to what the Utility Company is. Utility Companies are responsible for everything in RED while customers are responsible for the areas marked in GREEN.
Utility Owned vs Customer Owned Equipment

Utilities Actively regulate distribution voltages slowly by means of tap changing regulators and by switching capacitors to follow changes in load. These voltage changes are small incremental steeps necessary to keep the service delivery voltage within an acceptable range as customers add and subtract load during the day. This slow regulation maintains a sustained voltage range. Sustained usually means a period greater than two minutes.
The reason for the CBEMA curve is for changes in voltages shorter than two minutes. As described above, there will be excursions outside the acceptable ranges for short “momentary” periods.

| 10
Voltage Tolerance BoundaryThe only national standard for utilization voltage regulation is ANSI C84.1. Its title is American National Standard for Electric Power Systems and Equipment – Voltage Ratings (60 Hertz). The first version in 1954 was a combination of two standards, one from the Edison Electric Institute that represents utilities and the second from NEMA that stands for National Electrical Manufacturers Association. It establishes nominal voltage ratings for utilities to regulate the service delivery and it establishes operating tolerances at the point of use. The design and operation of power systems and the design of equipment to be supplied from such systems should be coordinated with respect to these voltages.
In doing so, the equipment will perform satisfactorily in conformance with product standards throughout the range of actual utilization voltages that will be encountered on the system. These limits shall apply to sustained voltage levels and not to momentary voltage excursions that may occur from such causes as switching operations, fault clearing, motor starting currents, and the like.
To further this objective, this standard establishes, for each nominal system voltage, two ranges for service voltage and utilization voltage variations, designated as Range A and Range B, the limits of which are illustrated in figure 1 based on a 120 volt nominal system.
Figure 1.Voltage Ranges, ANSI C84.1NOTES:(a) These shaded portions of the ranges do not apply to circuits supplying lighting loads(b) This shaded portion of the range does not apply to 120-600-volt systems.(c) The difference between minimum service and minimum utilization voltages is intended to allow forvoltage drop in the customer’s wiring system. This difference is greater for service at more than 600 volts to allow for additional voltage drop in transformations between service voltage and utilization equipment.

The 6KVA/6KW and 10KVA/10KW plug and play UPS models are the most popular units as an IT staff member or lab technician can unpack, turn on, and plug in the UPS within 5 minutes. Time consuming and expensive electrical work is eliminated as the UPS plugs into a single receptacle (NEMA L6-30R for the 6KVA & NEMA 6-50R for the 10KVA). Those models are highlighted in YELLOW.
*UPS Should Be A Minimum of 20% More than the Wattage Rating Of The Equipment You Need To Protect
