Two of the NFL’s most storied fran- chises kick off their 2011 preseason cam- paigns this Friday as the Washington Redskins host the defending AFC Cham- pion Pittsburgh Steelers at FedExField. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast locally on NBC4 and Comcast SportsNet with Kenny Albert calling the play-by-play, Joe Theismann providing the color analysis and Doc Walker reporting from the sideline. The contest can be heard on the Red- skins Radio Network with Larry Michael on the call, Pro Football Hall of Famers and Redskins legends Sam Huff and Sonny Jurgensen adding color analysis, and Chris Russell on the sideline. The Redskins’ preseason debut will highlight a quarterback battle between eight-year NFL veteran Rex Grossman and 29-year-old John Beck. Grossman, who led the Chicago Bears to the 2006 NFC Championship, posted two of his three career 300-yard passing games dur- ing his three starts for the Redskins from Weeks 15-17 last season. Whichever quarterback gets the start- ing nod will share the backfield with new running back Tim Hightower, recently acquired in a trade from Arizona. High- tower spent three seasons with the Cardi- nals, where in 2010 he totaled career highs in carries (153), rushing yards (736) and average yards per carry (4.8). The Redskins return four starters from their offensive line, including right tackle Jammal Brown, a two-time Pro Bowler, in his second season in Washington. The other tackle position is held by Trent Williams, the team’s 2010 first-round pick (fourth overall). Will Montgomery will slide over to center after having started six games at right guard in 2010, and Kory Lichten- steiger will start at left guard, where he started all but two games a season ago. The group is rounded out by guard Chris Chester, who the Redskins signed as an unrestricted free agent from Baltimore. The offense, under the direction of of- fensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, will be bolstered once again by tight end Chris Cooley, a two-time Pro Bowler. In 2010, Cooley became the 27th player in team history to play in 100 games as Redskin, and his 420 career receptions are the sixth-most in franchise history. The defense returns all three of the Redskins’ Pro Bowlers from a season ago, led by 14th-year NFL veteran Lon- don Fletcher, whom coach Mike Shana- han recently called “the best leader I’ve seen since I’ve been in the National Football League.” Brian Orakpo, who has two Pro Bowl appearances in as many NFL seasons, will man one outside linebacker position. Ryan Kerrigan, selected by the Redskins with the 16th overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, is expected to provide a com- plementary pass rush at the other outside linebacker position. The defensive line received a boost with the signings of free agents Barry Cofield and Stephen Bowen, both of whom were pulled away from division rivals. Cofield set career highs in tackles (54) and sacks (four) with the Giants in 2010, while Bowen was impressive with the Cowboys in replacing defensive end Marcus Spears late last season. The secondary includes the reigning Pro Bowl MVP, as cornerback DeAn- gelo Hall returns after tying a career high in interceptions (six) and tying for the league lead in takeaways (8) a season ago. Josh Wilson, an offseason free agent signing, will start at the opposite corner- back position. Strong safety LaRon Landry returns in 2011 after an Achilles injury derailed an All-Pro caliber first half in 2010, and he’ll team with free safety Oshiomogho Atogwe, a free agent signing who had 22 interceptions in six seasons with the St. Louis Rams. Formally organized in 1958, the Washington RedskinsAlumni Association was the first organization of its kind in thecountry. The organization spearheaded the alumni movementamong former professional football players and was the modelfor other alumni groups that later formed in all NFL cities.

The primary objectives of the Redskins Alumni are “promot-ing a continuing interest in current and past players of the Wash-ington Redskins” and “promoting and fostering interest andfunding for charitable purposes.” With respect to the latter, thealumni conduct fundraising events to raise money that can be do-nated to charitable organizations or used in other ways to helpimprove the quality of life for youth in the Greater Washingtoncommunity.

Today, Redskins alumni continue to make their presenceknown throughout the community. As a very active chapter of theNFL Alumni Association, their motto is “Caring for Kids.” In ad-dition to the numerous events and appearances, Redskins Alumniparticipate in throughout the year, they hold two major fundrais-ing events of their own-the Redskins Alumni Charity Golf Clas-sic, now in its 33rd year, and the annual Washington RedskinsWelcome Home Luncheon, now in its 50th year. Mark Mosleycurrently resides as president of the Redskins Alumni Associa-tion.

The alumni have an office at Redskins Park and can bereached at 703-726-7488.

Since his arrival in Washington as Executive Vice Presi-dent/General Manager in December of 2009, Bruce Allen hasmade it a priority to build a bridge to the franchise’s gloriouspast.

That heritage was honored once again last weekend whenformer Redskins great Chris Hanburger was enshrined in the ProFootball Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. He was presented by hisson, Chris. Hanburger was voted into the Hall after being a nomi-nee of the seniors committee. In all, he waited 28 years to beelected.

Hanburger joins Darrell Green (2008), Art Monk (2008) andRuss Grimm (2010) to make four players who spent the majorityof their careers with the Redskins to earn the honor in the pastfour years. In addition, former Redskins Bruce Smith (2009) andDeion Sanders (2010) have also been elected over that time.

Haburger said of his election to the Hall of Fame: “It’s won-derful, I’m overwhelmed. It’s just such a tremendous honor toeven be nominated, let alone, be voted in. You have to thinkabout all of the men that played before I did, certainly the menthat I played with and against, and then you look at the guys play-ing now. It’s just a select few that make it in. I was fortunate toplay with players on the Redskins defense that made it all workfor me.”

The Washington Redskins picked North Carolina linebackerChris Hanburger in the 18th round of the 1965 NFL Draft. TheAll-American started to make his mark late in his rookie seasonas he began to form a reputation as a player who made big plays.Soon thereafter he assumed the role as the “quarterback” of theRedskins defense while becoming one of the most dependableand steady linebackers of his era.

Hanburger was an integral part of the dominant Redskinsteams of the 1970s. At the same time that Washington was risingto the top of the NFL, Hanburger began earning national acclaim. He was selected first-team All-Pro four times in a five-seasonspan from 1972 to 1976 and named All-Eastern Conference in1968 and 1969 and All-NFC six times in seven seasons from1970 to 1976. Hanburger was also voted to nine Pro Bowls in his14-season career.

His performance in the 1972 season gained him perhaps his

greatest notoriety as he helped lead the Redskins to its first everSuper Bowl berth.

“I am so happy for Chris,” Redskins Owner Daniel Snydersaid following the announcement. “He was one of the era’s mostdominating players and is well deserving of this honor. Not onlydid he make nine Pro Bowls, Chris was the captain of the defenseand was a true coach on the field. This is a great day for the entireRedskins’ organization.”

Allen echoed Snyder’s sentiments: “I think it’s a great day for the Redskins, our fans and all of

Chris’ teammates,” Allen said. “It shows that a person who isdedicated to the game and is passionate and didn’t care about hisown personal glory, but cared about his teammates can be re-warded, and that is special.”

The Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation and Red-skins Alumni Association will host the 50th annual RedskinsWelcome Home Luncheon Wednesday, August 24th from 11a.m.to 2 p.m. at Marriott Wardman Park Hotel located at 2660 Wood-ley Road NW in Washington, DC.

Celebrate the burgundy and gold luncheon in the Nation’sCapital with the Washington Redskins. This is the only eventwhere fans and corporate partners have the chance to spend timewith the entire Redskins team! Each table will guarantee at leastone player, coach or alumnus seated with attendees. The lunch-eon will also include unique live and silent auction items, doorprizes, announcement of the 2010 Redskins Players of the Year, and the inaugural recipient of the Washington Redskins Commu-nity Service Award.

This is the 8th consecutive year that ticket prices have re-mained at $175 each. A limited number of tickets are now on saleat www.redskins.com/community. Corporate sponsorship pack-ages are also available. Proceedsfrom the event will benefit the youthprograms of the Washington Red-skins Charitable Foundation andRedskins Alumni Association.

2011 WASHINGTON REDSKINS BY POSITIONThe Redskins underwent significant change in personnel at

the turn of the 2009-10 calendar years, as in December, the teamhired Bruce Allen as General Manager and, in January, an-nounced the hiring of Mike Shanahan as Head Coach. Nearly 18months later, the turnover of their roster is just as drastic as theirarrival.

Of the 90 players on the roster entering the Redskins’ 2011preseason opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers, 66 have joinedthe team since the new regime joined forces in early January2010, a turnover rate of 73.3 percent from the team Shanahan in-herited.

First and foremost, Shanahan and Allen have shown a com-mitment to building through the college ranks, as 35 of the 66new additions have come by way of the NFL Draft or college freeagency signings. The Redskins have 17 draft picks from 2010 and2011 on their current roster, outnumbering the 14 players on thecurrent roster drafted by the Redskins from 2004-09. College freeagents signed during the Shanahan era account for 18 players ofthe current roster. The Redskins have also added 25 players viafree agency, five by trade and one by waiver claim. QUARTERBACKS (5)/RETURNING STARTERS (0)

The Redskins are in the midst of a quarterback competition, with John Beck and Rex Grossman competing for the starting po-sition.

The Redskins return John Beck and Rex Grossman, whostarted the final three games in 2010. In Grossman’s four gamesof action, including three starts, he completed 74-of-133 passingattempts for 884 yards, seven touchdown and four interceptions. He has played in 41 career games with 34 starts and has com-pleted 598-of-1,104 passes for 7,081 yards, 40 touchdowns and40 interceptions.

FEDEXFIELD GOES GREENThe Washington Redskins and NRG Energy, one of the largest

energy companies in the United States, are bringing renewableenergy to FedExField as part of the first professional sportssponsorship to carry the NRG name. New solar power installa-tions integrated into the stadium and in the parking lot will beunveiled in September. The solar power system at FedExFieldwill provide a portion of the stadium’s electricity needs on gamedays and can generate enough power to serve all of its electricalneeds on non-game days. As part of the nine-year agreement, NRG will install three dif-

ferent types of solar panels that together will generate twomegawatts (MW) of electricity. NRG will cover 850 spaces inthe Platinum A1 Parking Lot with 8,000 solar panels. Thesepanels will generate power for the stadium and provide coveredparking to protect fans from inclement weather and enhancetheir tailgating experience on game days. An NRG-brandedentry plaza at Gate A will inform fans about renewable energyand showcase clean energy technologies. The installation willinclude translucent solar panels, sculptures featuring thin filmsolar technology and 10 electric vehicle charging stations fromNRG’s eVgosm charging network. “Our partnership with NRG will add to the fans’ game day ex-

perience at FedExField and offers a unique example of howsolar energy installations can do more than generate power,”said Dan Snyder, owner of the Washington Redskins. “NRG’sexpertise and vision are a great match for us and we are excitedto be part of this effort that will reduce our environmental im-pact and offer our fans another unique experience.”“It will take 8,000 solar panels and a lot of expertise to deliver

this win to the Redskins – we’re getting it done,” said DavidCrane, NRG’s President and CEO. “The Redskins understandthe importance of increasing our national energy security bymaking full use of our own inexhaustible natural energy re-source. NRG is helping to make that change at FedExField andacross the country.”“There is nothing like homegrown, in this case stadium-

grown, energy,” said Fred Smith, chairman, president and chiefexecutive officer of FedEx Corporation and part owner of theWashington Redskins. “Solar can be a very smart investment. Iam pleased to see FedExField moving in this direction and in-creasing its own energy independence.”“We were very excited when the Redskins came to us for

process support for the solar panel project at FedExField,”Prince George’s County Executive Rushern L. Baker III added.“It is the type of green initiative that we are encouraging allbusinesses in the county to undertake.”NRG is involved in some of the most ambitious clean energy

projects in the country, including utility-scale solar generation inCalifornia; eVgosm, the nation’s first privately funded electricvehicle charging network; and smaller-scale efforts that bringthe benefits of renewable energy directly to consumers.NRG’s subsidiary Reliant Energy will be the official provider

for all the electricity to power the Redskins in their home sta-dium. Reliant is one of the largest retail electricity providers inthe competitive Texas market, and is expanding both its com-mercial and residential businesses to several states in the North-east, including Maryland.

Redskins linebacker London Fletcher earned the nick-name "Bam Bam" as a child because of his fondness for theFlintstones cartoon and his propensity to ransack his home.

In like manner, Fletcher has terrorized opponents for thelast 13 seasons as one of the NFL's most consistent andproductive defensive players.

Fletcher continued that level of play in 2010 earning hissecond consecutive Pro Bowl berth after registering 188tackles (according to coaches totals), including four forloss, 2.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, three fumble recover-ies, 12 passes defensed and one interception.

Fletcher has also proven to be one of the league’s mostdurable players as he has now started 167 straight leaguecontests, a figure which ranks third among active playersbehind Indianapolis’ Peyton Manning (208) and TampaBay’s Ronde Barber (183).

Furthermore, Fletcher has not missed a game since en-tering the league as a college free agent with St. Louis in1998. His 208 consecutive games played streak is tied forthe fourth-longest streak among linebackers in NFL historyand tied for first among active players.

Since joining the Redskins in 2007, Fletcher has led theteam in tackles in each of his four seasons with the club, while assuming a leadership and defensive captaincy role.

Prior to being selected to the Pro Bowl following 2009and 2010, Fletcher had been named an alternate each of theprevious two years.

Fletcher anchored the St. Louis Rams' defense from hismiddle linebacker spot in 1999, leading the team in tackleswith 138. While St. Louis' offense received much of the ac-claim on the team's way to winning Super Bowl XXXIV,the defense ranked sixth in the league overall and firstagainst the run.

Fletcher enjoyed four seasons in St. Louis, leading theRams in tackles from 1999-2001, before joining Buffalofrom 2002-06. He topped the Bills in tackles all five sea-sons and has continued that streak of leading his team intackles to 12 straight seasons after four years in Washing-ton.

His 188 tackles in 2010 marked the 12th straight seasonin which Fletcher recorded at least 100 stops, dating back

to 1999 when he was in his second season with the Rams. That is the longest current streak among all NFL players.Fletcher's 188 tackles in 2010 give him 2,053 for his career, the second-most among active players, behind only Balti-more's Ray Lewis.

Fletcher’s 2.5 sacks in 2010 gave him 32.5 for his career, which is fourth among active inside linebackers behindBrian Urlacher (41), Ray Lewis (38.5) and James Farrior(33.5).

His 16 career interceptions are sixth among active line-backers, behind Lewis (30), Keith Bullock (21), Urlacher(18), Mike Peterson (18) and Takeo Spikes (18).

Fletcher, who was named to Peter King's All-DecadeTeam after leading the 2000s in tackles, has amassed morestops than any other player since the start of the 2000 sea-son (according to STATS, INC).

In addition to winning the Redskins Defensive MVPAward in each of his first two seasons in Washington,Fletcher has become one of the team's most valuable play-ers in the community. Fletcher earned the Washington Red-skins Man of the Year Award in 2008 and 2009 and was oneof three finalists for the Walter Payton NFL Man of theYear in 2009.

KID IN THE HALLRedskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall earned his third Pro

Bowl selection following the 2010 season after finishing tied forfifth in the NFL with six interceptions and tied for first with eighttakeaways.

Hall made history in Week 7 at Chicago when he tied theleague record with four interceptions, all in the second half, inthe Redskins’ 17-14 victory. Hall became the 19th player in NFLhistory to accomplish the feat and the first since Denver’s DelthaO’Neal on Oct. 7, 2001. Hall also became the first player in NFLhistory to intercept four passes in a single half.

The following week, Hall became the first player since AlbertLewis in 1985 to record five interceptions over a two-game span.He finished the month of October with six interceptions. No NFLplayer has had more in a single month since Hall of Famer MikeHaynes in November of 1975.

Hall returned one of those interceptions against the Bears 92yards for a touchdown to provide the winning score. That returnwas the longest of his career and tied for the third-longest in Red-skins history.

Coupled with his 32-yard fumble return for a touchdown inWeek 1 against Dallas, Hall became the first Redskins defenderto score two defensive touchdowns in the same season sinceAndre Collins in 1994. Hall’s fumble return for a touchdownwas the Redskins’ first fumble return for a touchdown sinceSean Taylor did it at the Philadelphia Eagles on Jan. 1, 2006.

Hall now has three career interception returns for a touchdownand six career defensive returns for a touchdown. Hall also in-tercepted a pass and forced a fumble, which he returned 34 yardsfor a touchdown, in the Pro Bowl on his way to earning MostValuable Player honors.

In his 36 games with the Redskins, Hall has registered 12 in-terceptions and four fumble recoveries and shown that he stillhas the playmaking ability that once made him the eighth over-all selection in the 2004 draft.

Since entering the league that season, Hall is tied for third inthe NFL in interceptions, behind Ed Reed (42) and AsanteSamuel (40).

Likewise, Hall has stayed among the game’s best thieves overthe past four seasons.

Hall has also shown he knows what to do when he has the ballin his hands as his 681 interception return yards over that span arethe third-most in the league, behind Reed and Sharper.

Hall’s six interceptions in 2010 tied a career high and werethe most for a Redskins player since Matt Stevens also had sixin 1999. Hall also recorded two fumble recoveries and twoforced fumbles. His eight takeaways were the most for a Red-skins player since Barry Wilburn had nine (all interceptions) in1987.

Hall recorded his 32nd career interception while only 26 yearsold. Since the 1970 merger, only Everson Walls (37) had more be-fore turning 27.

In addition to his propensity for creating turnovers, Hallrecorded a career-high 112 tackles (according to coaches film) in2010, including four for loss. Hall’s tackle total was third amongNFL cornerbacks (according to NFL GSIS) behind the Giants’Terrell Thomas and the Titans’ Cortland Finnegan. Hall’s 16passes defensed ranked 11th in the NFL.

RACK ‘EMSecond-year linebacker Brian Orakpo earned his second

consecutive Pro Bowl berth following the 2010 season. Indoing so, Orakpo became the first Redskins player ever se-lected to Pro Bowls following each of his first two NFLseasons.

Orakpo led the Redskins in sacks for the second consec-utive year as a focal point in the Redskins’ new 3-4 defen-sive scheme. Coupled with his franchise rookie-record 11in 2009, his 8.5 sacks in 2010 made Orakpo the first Red-skins player since Ken Harvey in 1996 and 1997 to recordat least eight sacks in consecutive seasons.

In addition to his 8.5 sacks, Orakpo compiled 78 tackles, including nine for loss, 47 quarterback hurries, two passesdefensed and one forced fumble. He was often the focus ofopposing offense’s pass protections, which led to his draw-ing many crucial penalties throughout the season.

In Week 1 against Dallas, Orakpo drew one false startand three holding penalties, including one that negated agame-tying touchdown pass on the contest’s final play.

Orakpo registered his first sack of 2010 in Week 2 whenhe brought down Houston’s Matt Schaub and his second inWeek 3 when he snagged St. Louis’ Sam Bradford.

In Week 4 at Philadelphia, Orakpo drew two more hold-ing penalties against Pro Bowl left tackle Jason Peters.

In Week 5 against Green Bay, Orakpo recorded two moresacks for the fourth multi-sack game of his young career.

Against the Colts in Week 6, Orakpo stripped quarter-back Peyton Manning and recorded his fifth sack of theseason in the process.

In Chicago in Week 7, Orakpo sacked Jay Cutler twice toincrease his season total to seven. It also marked the firsttime in his career that Orakpo recorded a full sack in threestraight games.

Against Philadelphia in Week 10, Orakpo combined withAndre Carter to sack Michael Vick. He added a sackagainst Minnesota in Week 12 to bring his season total to8.5.

Orakpo, the team's first-round pick in the 2009 NFLDraft (No. 13 overall) and the fifth defensive player se-lected, was one of the most productive rookies in 2009.His 11 sacks led all NFL rookies and is tied for the most fora rookie over the last five seasons (Kamerion Wimbley,2006). Following the season he was named to thePFWA/PFW All-Rookie Team.

Orakpo tied for seventh in the NFL with 11 sacks each in2009, while combining with Carter to form the league’sfourth-highest producing sack tandem. They were one ofonly two pairs of teammates to reach double-digit sack to-tals in 2009. The last time the Redskins had two playerswith double-digit sacks in the same season was in 2000when Marco Coleman had 12 and Bruce Smith had 10.

The last time the Redskins had two players with at least11 sacks in the same season was in 1985 when CharlesMann had 15 and Dexter Manley had 14.5.

Orakpo’s sack total was a franchise rookie record, sur-passing the previous high of six shared by Dean Hamel(1985) and Andre Collins (1990).

With four sacks at Oakland in 2009, Orakpo is one of 14players to record a double-digit sack season as a rookieover the last 16 years, joining Hugh Douglas (10, 1996),Simeon Rice (12.5, 1996), Peter Boulware (11.5, 1997),Jevon Kearse (14.5, 1999), Darren Howard (11, 2000),Dwight Freeney (13, 2002), Julius Peppers (12, 2002), Ter-rell Suggs (12, 2003), Kevin Williams (10, 2003), ShawneMerriman (10, 2005), Mark Anderson (12, 2006), Kame-rion Wimbley (11, 2006) and Ndamukong Suh (10,2010).

Orakpo’s four-sack game tied a Redskins franchiserecord and made him the first NFL rookie to record foursacks in a game since Cornelius Bennett, on Dec. 27, 1987.Orakpo's 44 yards lost on his four sacks are the most in theleague since the statistic began being tracked in 1994.

Coupled with Carter’s two sacks the pair became onlythe second duo in Redskins history to combine for six sacksin the same game, joining Phillip Daniels and MarcusWashington, who accomplished the feat on Dec. 18, 2005.

As a senior at the University of Texas, Orakpo was aunanimous All-American and won the Nagurski Trophy(nation's top defensive player), Lombardi Award (nation'stop lineman) and Hendricks Award (nation's top defensiveend).

He was a unanimous first-team All-America selection bythe American Football Coaches Association, AssociatedPress, Football Writers Association of America, SportingNews and Walter Camp Football Foundation, the consensusBig XII Defensive Player of the Year and unanimous first-team All-Big XII selection.

LaRON LANDRYRedskins safety LaRon Landry is perhaps the Red-

skins’ most athletically gifted player, mixing his chiseled6-foot, 220-pound frame with superior speed and range.

The 26-year-old was an All-American and three-timeAll-SEC performer at LSU, who the Redskins drafted withthe sixth overall pick in 2007. Following a 2007 season inwhich he earned All-Rookie honors, Landry continued hisemergence as one of the NFL’s best safeties in 2008.

That year, he recorded 70 tackles, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, two interceptions and 13 passes de-fensed and was voted as the first alternate to the NFC ProBowl squad behind Brian Dawkins and Adrian Wilson.

Recognizing Landry’s unmatched athletic ability andaggressive, hard-hitting style, new Redskins defensive co-ordinator Jim Haslett decided to move Landry to his morenatural strong safety position after two-and-a-half years atfree safety. It was the perfect fit for Haslett’s attackingscheme.

Following a Week 5 win against Green Bay, Sports Il-lustrated and NBC’s Peter King wrote, “no single defen-sive player in the league has jumped from relativeanonymity to stardom like strong safety LaRon Landry ofthe Redskins. In Week 5 against Aaron Rodgers and thePackers, he was the most important Redskin defender in a16-13 beat down.

“Talk about starting and finishing the job: In the firstminute of the game, on the first Green Bay series of theday, he creamed tight end Donald Lee and forced a fumblethat the Redskins recovered. In the 63rd minute, in over-time, Landry picked off a Rodgers pass intended for theforgotten Greg Jennings; five minutes later, a GrahamGano field goal won the game.”

After that game, Mike Shanahan said of Landry, “Heamazes me, to be honest with you. I’ve been around a lotof football players in my career, and to watch a guy playthat hard and that consistent week after week – it’s onlythe fifth game of the season, but he’s fast, he’s a hitter andhe loves to play. It’s a pleasure to watch him and he’s thatway every snap – obviously, a great football player.”

SI.com named Landry to its Midseason All-Pro Team, but an Achilles injury ended his season after nine games.Landry finished the season with 101 tackles (according tocoaches film), including six for loss, one sack, one inter-ception, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, 10 quar-terback hurries and 11 passes defensed.

At the time of his injury, Landry was third in the NFLin tackles (according to NFL GSIS.).

Lorenzo Alexander, one of the most versatile playerson the Redskins’ roster, has emerged as one of the team’sstarting outside linebackers and a special teams standout.Earlier in his career, Alexander played defensive tackle, defensive end, and offensive guard and tight end in short-yardage situations.

This past offseason Alexander slimmed down to 275pounds in order to make a position change in the Redskins’new 3-4 defense. After starting just one game in his previ-ous three seasons, Alexander earned a starting outside line-backer job in Week 4 and opened 12 games there in 2010.According to coaches totals, he finished the season with 62tackles, including three for loss, 1.5 sacks, one forced fum-ble, 17 quarterback hurries and four passes defensed.

Alexander got his first career start at linebacker in aWeek 4 win at Philadelphia and stayed there for a Week 5win against Green Bay. In that matchup, Alexander brokeup a 4th-and-goal pass from the Redskins own one-yardline to stop the drive.

“We thought Lorenzo would give us a little bit moreflexibility in some of the things we do with our coverages outwide,” Redskins Head Coach Mike Shanahan said.

Alexander, who led the Redskins with 20 special teamstackles and one fumble recovery, became one of the NFL’stop special teams players and was elected an alternate tothe NFC’s Pro Bowl squad.

Along the way, Alexander has become one of the mostfeared special teams player in the league. He once againshowed the propensity to deliver bone-crushing hits whenin Week 4 he leveled Eagles kick returner Jorrick Calvin atthe Philadelphia 17-yard line.

“Lorenzo seems to do this each week regardless of theother team,” Shanahan said. “That was one of the best hitsI’ve been around since I’ve been in the NFL. That was anexplosion on the sidelines. So that was very, very special.”

While Alexander has developed into one of Washing-ton’s special teams aces, he has also been one of the Red-skins most active members of the community. For hisefforts, Alexander was the Redskins winner of the WalterPayton Man of the Year Award.

Alexander started his ACES Foundation in 2008. Thefoundation runs college prep and life skills workshops andprovides tutoring to young people in Alexander’s nativeOakland. More information can be found at www.lorenzoalexander.org.

THE COOLEY ZONEChris Cooley entered 2009 fresh off a Pro Bowl berth,

his second straight, only to see his season ended prema-turely by injury when he fractured a bone in his foot inWeek 7 against Philadelphia. To that point, Cooley had reg-istered 29 catches for 332 yards and two touchdowns. Heranked in the top eight tight ends in the NFL in all threecategories.

In 2010, Cooley re-gained his form by catching 77passes for 849 yards and three touchdowns. He tied forninth in the NFC and tied for 15th in the NFL in receptions, which placed him second among NFC and NFL tight endsbehind only Dallas’ Jason Witten (94). His receivingyardage total ranked 18th in the NFC and 28th in the NFL,placing him third among NFC and NFL tight ends behindWitten (1,002) and San Francisco’s Vernon Davis (914).

Cooley has taken his place among the league's elite tightends since the Redskins drafted him in the third round in2004, a year in which he was selected to the All-RookieTeam. Since that time, among players at his position, Coo-ley ranks fourth in receptions (420) and receiving yards(4,638) and fifth in touchdowns (33).

Cooley, who is the first tight end in NFL history to catchat least six touchdowns in his first four seasons, has alsodemonstrated his speed and athletic ability to run with theball after the catch. The former high school All-Americanand undefeated Utah state champion wrestler has amassed2,386 yards after catch (YAC) since entering the league in2004, the third-most among NFL tight ends over that span.

In addition to making his mark as one of the most pro-ductive tight ends in the NFL, Cooley has established him-self as arguably the greatest tight end in Redskins history. His 420 catches, 4,638 receiving yards and 33 touchdownsall rank second behind Jerry Smith (421-5,496-60), despiteCooley having played 66 fewer games in Washington.

Cooley is two catches shy of passing Jerry Smith (421)for fifth-place in Redskins history and the most ever by atight end. Cooley, who tied a career and franchise tight endhigh with 849 receiving yards has now accounted for fiveof the top six receiving seasons by a tight end in Redskinshistory.

In Week 14 against the Buccaneers, Cooley (103) be-came the 27th player in Redskins history to play 100 gameswith the franchise. In Week 16 against the Jaguars, Cooleypassed Ricky Sanders (414) for sixth all-time in receptionsin Redskins history. Cooley had already passed MichaelWestbrook for ninth all-time in receiving yards in Week 11against the Titans.

Cooley’s reception total of 420 is the 22nd-most in NFLhistory among tight ends, while his 4,638 receiving yardsare the 35th-most by a tight end in league annals. He isthree catches shy of moving past Smith, Bob Tucker (422),and Jay Novacek (422) and into the top 20 all-time amongtight ends.

GATHER NO MOSSThe 2009 season marked Santana Moss' fifth as a Wash-

ington Redskin and the fifth straight he has led the club inreceiving yards. For the year, the nine-year NFL veteranrecorded a team-high 70 catches, for 902 yards and threetouchdowns.

With 93 receptions for 1,115 yards in 2010, Moss rankedfourth in the NFL in catches and 10th in receiving yards. The 2010 season marked Moss’ fourth career 1,000-yardreceiving season and third with the Redskins. That tiesHenry Ellard for the third-most in franchise history behindGary Clark (5) and Art Monk (5). Moss also accomplishedthe feat in 2003 as a member of the New York Jets and in2005 and 2008 as a Redskin.

Moss’ 93 receptions set a career high and he led the Red-skins in receiving yards for the sixth time, which ties himwith Art Monk (1980, 82, 84-85, 89, 91) and Hugh Taylor(1949-54) for the second-most in club history.

Moss trails only Hall of Famer Charley Taylor, who didit eight times (1966-69, 72-75). It also marks the sixth con-secutive season Moss has done so, tying Hugh Taylor(1949-54) for the franchise high.

Moss’ eight catches against the Cowboys in Week 15moved him into fourth all-time in Redskins history in re-ceptions, passing Jerry Smith (421). He has 442 as a Red-skin.

In Week 14 against the Buccaneers, Moss caught sevenpasses for 82 yards and passed Ricky Sanders for fifth all-time in Redskins history in receiving yards. He has 6,142 asa Redskin, which is 350 yards behind Bobby Mitchell forfourth place in Redskins annals.

With a team-high six touchdown receptions in 2010,Moss brought his Redskins total to 33, tied with teammateChris Cooley for the eighth-most in franchise history.

Moss' 70-catch average during his five seasons with theRedskins is a record for a franchise that has employed Hallof Fame receivers Wayne Millner, Bobby Mitchell, CharleyTaylor and Art Monk. In addition, Moss set the club recordfor single-season receiving yards in 2005 with 1,483 yardson his way to the Pro Bowl.

For his career, which includes four seasons with the NewYork Jets, Moss owns 593 receptions for 8,558 receivingyards (14.4) and 52 touchdowns. Those totals rank 59th,63rd and 87th, respectively, in NFL history.

NEW TORAINDespite playing in just 10 games, running back Ryan

Torain led the Redskins with 742 rushing yards and fourrushing touchdowns on 164 carries (4.5 avg.). Torain alsoadded 18 catches for 125 yards and two touchdowns, which tied him with Santana Moss for the team lead intotal touchdowns (6).

Torain’s 74.2 rushing yards/per game ranked 14th in theleague, while he cracked the 100-yard rushing mark inthree of his eight starts.

The 24-year old endeared himself to Redskins fans witha physical running style, but Torain also proved he has thespeed to pick up yardage in chunks. The 6-foot-1, 218-pounder reeled off 26 runs of 10 yards or more, which ac-counted for 15.9 percent of his rushing attempts. That wasthe third-best rate among NFL running backs behind onlyJamaal Charles and LeGarrette Blount.

Prior to this season, Torain had appeared in three NFLcontests, both coming during his rookie season in 2008.After spending the first two weeks of the 2010 season onthe Redskins’ practice squad, Torain accumulated 116yards and a touchdown on 25 carries spelling starter Clin-ton Portis in Weeks 3 and 4.

Following an injury to Portis, Torain started the nextfour contests, which included back-to-back 100-yard rush-ing efforts against Indianapolis (20-100-5.0-2) andChicago (21-125-6.0-0).

In the Week 6 game against the Colts, Torain becamethe first Redskins player to rush for 100 yards and twotouchdowns in the same game since Portis on Oct. 12,2008, against St. Louis.

When Torain followed that up with another 100-yard ef-fort at Chicago, he became the first Redskin to reach 100rushing yards in consecutive games since Portis in 2008,when he had 175 against Cleveland (10/19) and 126 atDetroit (10/26).

A mid-season hamstring injury cost Torain four games, but when he returned in Week 14 against Tampa Bay, heregistered a historic performance.

Torain opened the game with a 54-yard scamper, a ca-reer and Redskins season long, on his way to a career-high172 yards on 24 carries (7.2 avg.). His 172 rushing yardswere the 10th-most in a single game in Redskins history.Torain gained 121 rushing yards in the first quarter, themost in the NFL since Tiki Barber of the New York Giantshad 121 on Dec. 31, 2005. Torain’s 158 rushing yards inthe first half were the most in the NFL since Barber had171 on Oct. 20, 2005 against Carolina.

AAAFirst-year wide receiver Anthony Armstrong made a

strong impression on Redskins coaches last offseason, butfew could imagine the role he would play during the 2010season. The West Texas A&M product finished the yearwith 44 catches for 871 yards (19.8 avg.) and three touch-downs.

Armstrong’s 871 receiving yards in 2010 were the mostfor any Redskins wide receiver other than Moss since2004 (Laveranues Coles – 950).

Armstrong (871) and Moss (1,115) became the first pairof Redskins wide receivers to top the 800-yard receivingmark since 1999. That year, Michael Westbrook had 1,191and Albert Connell registered 1,132. Armstrong and Moss’combined 1,986 receiving yards are the most for a Red-skins wide receiver duo since that 1999 season.

Moss (1,115), Armstrong (871) and Chris Cooley (849)became the first Redskins trio to each top 800 receivingyards since 1989 when Gary Clark (1,229), Art Monk(1,186) and Ricky Sanders (1,138) accomplished the feat.

Armstrong proved to be one of the league’s premierdeep threats as his 19.8-yards per catch average rankedthird in the NFL behind Philadelphia’s DeSean Jackson(22.5) and Pittsburgh’s Mike Wallace (21.0). In addition,Armstrong hauled in four receptions of 50 yards or more, tied with Tennessee’s Kenny Britt for the third-most in theleague behind Jackson (6) and Wallace (5).

Led by Armstrong, the Redskins led the league withnine completions of at least 50 yards. Redskins tight endFred Davis and San Francisco’s Vernon Davis (3) were theonly players at their position to have multiple catches of atleast 50 yards. In fact, Fred Davis has two of the 12 recep-tions by the league’s tight ends in 2010 to cover at least 50yards. Redskins quarterback Donovan McNabb led allpassers with eight completions of at least 50 yards.
