Active Volcano

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1UWTwDwZp8

Has erupted during past 100 yrs.

Page 3: Redoubt, AK

Dormant Volcano

Mount Edgcumbe, near Sitka AK

Has not erupted recently, but might

Page 4: Redoubt, AK

Extinct Volcano

Has not erupted in 1,000 yrs.Scientist think it might not eruptever again.

CraterFormation:

Bowl-shaped opening produced byvent explosions & lava flow

Page 6: Redoubt, AK

Side Vents Describe:

Cracks in the crust, where magma can squeeze through.

Page 7: Redoubt, AK

Central Vents Describe:

Main pipeline frommagma chamber tothe outside of the volcano.

Page 8: Redoubt, AK

Magma Chamber Conditions:

Under extreme pressure, very hot, & is rising towardsEarth’s surface.

Page 9: Redoubt, AK

Main Idea 2: Three major things come out an erupting volcano:

1. gas 2. lava3. tephra

Page 10: Redoubt, AK

Gas

Explain:The high pressureof magma can keep gases dissolved. As magma leaves volcano, pressure decreases, gas is released.

Page 11: Redoubt, AK

Tephra

Describe:Solid particles, such as ash & pumice, are spewed out the volcano’s top.

Page 12: Redoubt, AK

Lava

Define: Magma thatis released above the ground.

Influence of Silica Content: Silica determines the viscosity; more Si increasesviscosity & slows lava flow.

Page 13: Redoubt, AK

Lava Formations:

Pillow Lava

Describe: Magmathat is releasedunderwater &cools quickly.

Page 14: Redoubt, AK

Lava Tubes

Describe: Tunnelsthat extend from volcanic vents through the longstretch of lava flow.

Page 15: Redoubt, AK

Pyroclastic Flow

Describe: A destructive mixture of gas & ash that can reach temps. Of 700degrees C & travels down the side of a volcano at 125mph!!!!!
