One hundred years ago part of Redfield was known as the Wilder-ness. There is still an untamed beauty in this area with its bustling little High St (a buried gem waiting to be unearthed and polished), the amazing Victorian park that seems to go on forever, and its great mix of friendly people. So, for this reason, Redfest 2013 is embracing the Wilderness as our theme. Hugging the bear, so to speak.

However, before you enter the Wilderness with us there are a few

things you might want to bring with you: binoculars, khaki shorts, bear costume, leather gloves for carry-ing birds of prey, fly swatter, mosquito net, feathered head dress, squirrel taming kit. We dare you to bring a piece of your own wilder-ness vision along for the day!

As a community we are privileged to share a wonderful park, created over a hundred years ago with a lamp post that seems to have dropped out of Narnia, where fishing is still a sport, and where a

beautiful promenade of trees makes walking through it a joy at any time of the year.

We also have some great new local shops and money for planting trees on Church Road. Rewind 5 short years and there was none of this: Grounded had just opened and Redfest was just a glint in eye of a few friends. Now, in 2013 we are staging what is a contender for the best free festival in Bristol.

When someone organised the planting of the park they had the foresight to look ahead generations to the real benefits they would be giving to ancestors way into the future.

We want this area to benefit too from having a great festival for the whole community once a year and to help Redfield build a great reputation across all of Bristol.

9pm I Am The Mighty JungulatorPsychedelic sounds of Bristol artist Matthew Olden with a multi speaker audio visual performance. Under the moniker 'I am the mighty Jungulator', Olden has travelled Europe performing and creating sound installations. Head swimming, hallucinatory, multi-sensory fun.The Red Lion

8pm East Bristol Jazz groupEast Bristol Jazz group break out their jams for a lively improvised Jazz and swing session with guest vocalists and performers.The Old Stillage

9pm Redfest Comedy NightRib tickling wit, pun pundits and observational jokes from five comedians. Comedians supplied by Mirth Control Comedy.The Red Lion

9pm Poppy PerezzThe four piece hailing from Mexico, Trinidad and England, but now resident in the suitably cosmopolitan city of Bristol, make feel-good, sunshine-happy music for cool and groovy summer nights. Described variously as pinball electro, chirp-hop or even electro-funk-folk pop, you’re unlikely to have heard anything quite like it before.The Red Lion

9pm The Friday Dance OffDJs Ned, Ghosty and EEENs keep the house vibes deep and funky with a smattering of breakbeat and classic house tunes for good measure.The Old Stillage

All day family frolics from 12pm with great live music, kids’ activities, fairground, food and markets all with a wilderness theme.

Parents, get the baby-sitters in! You won't want to miss the bands at bedtime. We are pleased as thump that Bristol legends in their own lunchtime, Babyhead, are gracing the stage. And not only that, but a great mix of festival acts including Australian duo Rachel By The Stream and Bite The Buffalo.

This year we have an acoustic / folk stage too, even more delicious food choices and a Pop Up Tea Room at the St George Community Centre serving cake and cream scones. There's a bigger market area selling everything from artist-made jewellery and t-shirts to home-ware and toys.

The park bar is back too, artfully manned by The unstoppable Red Lion crew – who will also host gigs and events over the week. They will be selling cider, draught lager, and local ale by Redfield's own Arbor Ales who are again cooking up a Redfest beer especially for the occasion.

The Redfest Healing Area was a great success last year, just head to the top of the festival site to find sanctuary in the healing area's chill-out space, newly designed for 2013. You can choose a treatment, or just hang out and absorb the healing energy around you. All treatments are from fully qualified local practitioners offering holistic massage, reflex-ology, Indian head massage, aromatherapy and much more.

11.30am & 2.45pm Sian Snow - Yoga for parent and baby. Pregnant women welcome to join in with the free session. 12.45pm & 4pm Hatha Yoga for mindfulness, flexibility, strength and relaxation. There is a minimum donation of £5 per 20 min session or therapy. Be sure to reserve your place on the day, as spaces are limited and they booked out fast last year!

Redfest are also pleased to welcome Travel-West, whose 'Travel Advisers' will be offering services including loan bikes, free adult cycle training, maps and travel info, bus taster tickets and discounted Car Club membership. Cyclists can visit Dr Bike for a mechanical once over, marvel at a bike powered smoothie maker and whole host of other cycle fun!

saturday 3rd August

1pm Dirk LandishDelicate and distinctive vocals from this alternative folk troubadour. Ukulele, guitar and vocals maketh the man. 2pm Troy Ellis & The Hail Jamaican BandThe sweet, warm sound of reggae swinging its way through the park brings on the rush of summer. One love.

3pm Rachel By The Stream Dubby electro pop stylings from Melbourne based duo currently touring the UK. Wistful melody meets thumping bass in a hip hop hibberty hop.

4pm World Government One long improvised funk-off drawing on afro-beat, jazz and funk and featuring some of the most accomplished musicians on the Bristol scene. Think Roy Ayers jamming with Fela Kuti on a cider bus.

5pm Goan Dogs Take some desert blues, add footstompin' tunes with intricate harmonies and rhythms, then lace with essence of rockabilly and the hypnotic grooves of Tinarawen, and you might just get the Goan Dogs.

6pm Bite the BuffaloThis rock n roll swigging, fuzzbox toting swamp rock outfit will bend your mind with their tight riffing hailstorm of rock goodness. Tight rock action, no spandex required.

7pm Three Kings HighRooted in hip hop but with an eye on 90's indie music and rare funk alike, this band will make you go cross eyed with the sheer mix of it.

8pm BabyheadBristol's own jump-up, ska swinging, party-starting, festival warriors, Babyhead, throw down the glove. Join them for a high octane performance with great tunes in equal measure. Yes, yes!

Duos and solo acts, lovingly programmed by Jelli Records

1pm Richard Crane Pitching his music as a cross between pastoral English singer-songwriter and an Haight-Ashbury jangler, Crane has both a knack for a catchy tune and lyrics. Complimented at Redfest today by the talented singer/songwriter Mireille Mathlener.

2pm Tina Pluchino Rich vocals and thought provoking lyrics stirred together like a cocktail of blues, soul and folk that slips down easy, but delivers a kick.

3pm Brian Inglis An experienced and published singer songwriter, Inglis' material ranges from country rock, to pop, to soft jazz on a single guitar and comes complete with full vocal harmonies.

4pm Barefoot and The Angel Sam Atkinson's poetic lyrics, bluesy vocals and love of reggae converge with Naomi Williams' styling’s on the violin to create a genuinely unique sound.

5pm Sylvia Novak Duo Incorporating saxophone, flute and guitars in their act this unique Duo collide to great effect creating bouncy, passionate festival music.

6pm Bashema Jelli Records artist Bashema performs solo with her soulful mix of jazz, classical and blues. Just sit back and enjoy.

7pm Sebastian HawleyAn energetic combination of jazz, funk, rock and soul all colliding like musical Velcro but beyond the catchy hooks Hawley also delivers a great performance.

Sound FieldBuzzing, vibrating, tapping, drumming, the Sound Field by Mark Anderson is an intense immersive sonic experience. It’s basic elemental form of music/rhythm-making draws inspiration from the animal and insect world to create a sound that shifts and moves, encompassing the listener in a sea of primal cadence.

20 square meters in size, the Sound Field is made up of 48 separate sounding devices positioned grid-like in the field, controlled by a computer operated by the artist in the centre. The audience will walk into the Sound Field and hear sound move across in waves, through and around them, sometimes just single clicks/taps other times vibrating arpeggios of sound like a swarm of insects moving through the field.

Leading sound artist Mark Anderson’s work uses light, sound, kinetics, fire and pyrotechnics to create compelling site specific temporary installations and performances. His current projects include Audible Forces at this year’s Brighton, Norfolk and Norwich and Salisbury festivals plus River Soundings on the River Rea in Birmingham in October.

Kids Village 12pm JollyTotsThe kids fun kicks off with Naomi and her Jolly Tots class. Babies, toddlers and parents are all welcome to join the singing and music making.

5pm ShipwreckedFun, interactive family storytelling session for the under 7s. Climb aboard the pirate ship as Molly and Pirate Pete take you on a nautical adventure, ahoy!

In between there's plenty to do at the Kids Village: giant rocket painting, design your own rock guitar, make ribbon skirts, play with juggling balls or create fridge magnets. There's even a family chill out area with bean bags, books, Duplo, a ball run, and many other activities.

Watch out too for the extreme balloon modelling skills of Lucy Spielberg and don't forget to help build the cardboard city up by the trees.

Travelling Light Theatre Company11-12.30, 1–2.30 or 3–4.30

Bristol’s award-winning Travelling Light Theatre Company, based in Barton Hill, is taking up residence in St George Community Centre for the day. During which time you can work with some top-notch professional theatre makers.Play some fun drama games, bring your own stories or learn some new ones, come up with some off-the-wall characters and have a hoot while doing it. For anyone aged 7+, no experience is necessary. Just come along and take part!

David HopkinsonBristol based artist and self-styled king of slo-mo films, Hopkinson, slows down moments to show the beauty and strangeness of everyday movements and gestures. Redfest has commissioned David to make new work based on the park and the area of Redfield and Church Road.

His films are accessed and viewed in locations around the site by scanning QR codes with your phone. Bet you can't find them all....

Art Installations

As afternoon slips into evening, the kids’ village becomes a performance area. There's a great mix of acts for our first foray into Cabaret, and it promises to be great fun for adults and kids alike.
